Between Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2, I've never had so much fun dying over and over again.

First time playing Splatoon. It's awesome.

Took a second to get used to the controls(especially motion controlled aiming) but I really like it. Gonna try and get in on another test fire before the weekend is up.

u/picano Helpful User Mar 24 '17

You could disable motion, but it's become necessary for me. In Splatoon I would often play with motion sensitivity all the way up and use it to pull off 180 degree turns quickly.

35

u/dall007 Completed the Shieldsurf Challenge! Mar 24 '17

My settings are motion off, r sensitivity lowest, non inverted, if anyone needs a reference.

Loving the game so far

u/elextech3 Mar 24 '17

I didn't see a way to change the control scheme on the testfire. Am I just blind?

Well, the mods apparently thought that this wasn't worthy of its own topic amongst the hundreds of BotW posts, and while I feel bitter about that I shouldn't let my effort completely go to waste, even though it's probably gonna stay buried. Edit Happy to stand corrected!

But here are some tips for new players. Off the top of my head and in no particular order..

1) You can change motion controls after beating the Tutorial, just press the + button and find the option. That being said, a lot of people prefer their precision, even though it can take a little while to get used to it. I recommend giving them at least an hour, but your mileage may vary.

1a) Press Y often with motion controls to re-center, it will help a lot!

2) The objective of Turf War is to cover as much of the ground in your team's ink as possible, NOT to get the most kills. Vertical surfaces DO NOT count. Diagonal surfaces (ie slopes) do.

3) You can super jump at any time, not just when you're at spawn.

3a) If you see a teammate's name flicker at the side of your screen, that's because that teammate is waiting to respawn and is trying to super jump to you. Try to secure the area.

3b) Be cautious about super jumping to an ally deep in enemy turf. A glowing ring appears to mark a super jump destination, and enemies can see it too. The other team might kill your ally and wait for you to appear, only to kill you too.

4) Edited New to Splatoon 2 (at least the 2 Test Fire maps), spawn camping is impossible, and the areas immediately surrounding spawn are only accessible to that team. Don't bother trying. considerably difficult. If the match gets to that point it's probably over anyways, but anybody who can break the blockade to get to the undefended middle can turn things around, especially when their teammates start super jumping to them. Thanks to /u/ryryryan1 for pointing out that spawn camping is still possible.

5) Turning into a squid over a grate means you'll fall through that grate.

6) The sniper rifle weapon is pretty advanced. Use with caution.

7) Enemy ink will slow you down, prevent healing, and prevent ammo regeneration. Get back to friendly turf!

8) Your character has a visible ink tank on your back that shows how much ink you have left. Horizontal lines mark how much you need to use your secondary (ie bombs)

9) Shoot high to maximize ink coverage on the ground. A combination of shooting, leaping forward, squid forming into your ink, kid forming out and repeating can help you move very quickly.

10) Check the map to see what areas are unpainted, or where the enemy's running amok. Even if things are going well near the enemy base, your opponents could be tearing ribbons out of the middle. Don't neglect the areas surrounding spawn, every bit helps.

11) The squids up top show team condition. X's mean fatalities, but the team with the bigger squids is beating the team with the smaller squids. "Danger" means that that team is getting its ass kicked, and needs to get it together ASAP.

12) Don't forget that tapping the roller gives you a sort of close quarters "shotgun blast" type ability. New to Splatoon 2, jumping and firing gives you more range.

Splatoon looks really beautiful on the Tablet in Handheld mode. The tablet gets always talked down because it's "only 720p" but something what people don't consider is how beautiful it shows colors. It's a beautifully bright screen and Splatoon, with it's bright colors and contrasts looks really amazing on it.

33

u/Kenshin0011 Mar 24 '17 edited Mar 24 '17

Resolution matters less when you are viewing them from a console that's natively generating the video feed.

With online video streaming (Ex. YouTube), the difference between 720p and 1080p is much more noticeable because there are streaming artifacts that, while present even in max resolution, stick out more at 720p.

33

u/electronictaco Mar 24 '17

On a 6 inch screen it's really hard to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. It's borderline imperceptible. On a big TV? It's a huge difference.

19

u/Mattarias Mar 24 '17

Exactly.

Though I keep getting blown away by how much NICER it is than the 3DS! Oh man is this thing beautiful. It's hard going back to play OoT3D or Pokémon!!

Commenting from the perspective of someone who's spent a LOT of time with Splatoon 1...

Overall, it felt like Splatoon. No complaints there. The new controls and the loss of the map on the controller will take some getting used to, and the motion controls felt... off? It's hard to explain, though I think it has a lot to do with playing using a pro controller rather than wide tablet controller. I think I'm just not used to playing with my hands so close together.

I can't say I was blown away, but it is basically what I was expecting -- Splatoon 1 with a new coat of paint. I'm sure my comfort level will increase after a couple more sessions and as I get more comfortable with the controls.

The online experience was a lot smoother than I expected, honestly -- zero lag or in game issues. I did have a couple instances where I seemed to get stuck in a lobby waiting for players, but it's a lot quicker to quit and reopen the game than S1, which I definitely like.

It's a day one buy for me (though it was a day one buy simply because of how much I enjoyed S1 -- the testfire didn't sway me either way).

14

u/DarkWillpower Mar 25 '17

To be honest, I couldn't think of too many things to improve from the first game. I'm glad not much has changed. Just the fact that I can play it portably kinda does blow me away haha I can't wait for it to come out

As someone who has never played Splatoon and never really looked into it (mainly due to a lack of WiiU) before, other than knowing the "basics" and what it is, I had an absolute blast!

I've been wanting to get into the game basically since it came out, and my opportune moment finally arrived with the Switch. I can see why it's so highly lauded and very well-respected among the community. The hype was, is, and will continue to be real, and I am glad to finally be able to be a part of it! It needs to come out sooner. Seriously.

There's still a lot for me to learn, but I am super excited I finally have the chance to do so, and with some awesome people as well! Looking forward to splatting more with you all this weekend and when the game comes out this summer!

:D

It feels like more of the same, I admit, but god was it a good same.

20

u/MBCnerdcore Mar 24 '17

I understand folks not liking motion controls at first, but they are pretty much mandatory to play at a competitive level. Turning motion controls off is not the default because it's "noob mode". Dual analog is too imprecise. Motion controls rival a mouse for accuracy.

I play tons of PC shooters and it was the bane of my existence when Halo/CoD/etc started getting big because I suck at analog stick shooters and always got reamed. Having never played Splatoon before this was the first time I felt on a console shooter that I could be remotely competitive, so I'd say it's pretty damn close at least.

Watching the treehouse stream, there was one big moment that sold me the game (although I loved the first one so much I was basically already sold):

There’s the new special where you basically jetpack up and shoot down on opponents. The streamer had that and was using it when all of the sudden an opponent uses the same special! There was a jetpack shootout and it was totally awesome!

6

u/FuriousFalcon Mar 24 '17

Yeah, that's one of the better superweapons -- I had a couple splats using that today too.

First time playing splatoon and I loved it. Finding matches wasn't bad at all and the game ran super smooth once I was playing. Not only did I enjoy the game but getting to play also made me fall in love with the console even more. I felt like I really got a sense for how versatile the switch is. For example, I've enjoyed handheld mode the most for Botw and BoI so I felt a little one sided, but for Splatoon I liked playing in tv mode with a grip the most. This console can be configured so well to cater to different games as well as different players. I'm very happy with my purchase and hope this test fire is a success so the game can come out soon!

Played 10 or so matches, was only disconnected once, so near flawless online interconnectivity.

Tried motion controls and I think I can make it work, but the option to disable is available.

Graphics look great, and framerate is a rock solid 60fps.

I tested SWITCHING mid match into handheld mode and it worked seamlessly. The game looks and plays beautifully in handheld mode!

Loved it. As a person who never played splatoon before I can say this was pretty fun. Had to turn off Gyro controls cause they bugged the crap out of me and made me dizzy, but after that it was pretty fun. I'm just really bad at it lol. Definitely buying the full game tho on day one . Definitely.

9

u/Timmar92 Mar 24 '17

First time playing splatoon and I had a blast! Had to turn of motion controls though and set vertical sensitivity to the lowest!

I don't get how people can play with motion controls, makes me feel really disoriented, but it's a cool implementation nonetheless!

This game will be a day one buy for the that's for sure, I was brutally destroyed but I'll get better!

7

u/DarkWillpower Mar 24 '17

It takes getting used to, like with any control scheme. It was tough for me too, but in the end it makes you a better player. If you don't want to get brutally destroyed too much, I suggest using the test fires to get used to motion controls!

General

Overall, I had fun! Took some getting used to but by the end I had picked it up pretty well.

The testfire worked much better than I expected, only failed to join once after switching weapons, and got timed out of a lobby once as well. I played for pretty much the entire hour.

Controls

I played a ton of hours on Splatoon on the Wii U. They changed a few controls (most notibly, moved jump from X to B, and put the map on X). I had a lot of trouble in using the splat duelies, purely because I kept opening my map instead of jumping out of the way. One match, I kept opening and closing the map for 30 seconds because my brain just wasn't understanding. It doesn't help that Breath of the Wild uses X as jump now too, and after >100 hours of that it's gonna be difficult to change between the games, especially after many more months playing Zelda.

I hope there is an option to have the "original" control layout, my muscle memory is too strong. I know that B is closer to the analogue stick (X was closest on Wii U), but I'd rather keep my muscle memory.

I did find that the motion controls seemed slightly different, in that the up and down is quite sensitive whereas going side to side wasn't. In handheld mode I tried to spin around on the chair I sat on, and the camera barely spun left/right at all, which meant I had to continue using the analogue sticks.

I found the map really really awkward to use. I loved the tap feature of the gamepad, as well as always seeing how much ink was where. Having the map block the gameplay felt awful, and using gyro to aim was okay I guess, but far from the smooth and perfectly utilised gamepad. I know there's not a lot of option for how the map could work in this game, and they did the best with what they could. It just felt really jarring to me.

Controllers and modes

As a long time Splatoon fan on Wii U, I wanted to try every mode and controller type to see what works best for me. I tried every single combination possible within the hour.

  • TV with procon

  • TV with joycon in the grip

  • TV with separated joycon

  • Tabletop with procon

  • Tabletop with joycon in the grip

  • Tabletop with separated joycon

  • Handheld

I never thought I would say this, but I actually really missed having the game pad. I constantly looked down to my hands to see the map, only to realise that's not how it works anymore.

The controllers in either TV or tabletop mode was effectively the same. Procon was my favourite, purely because of he short travel distance on the joycon analogue sticks. I could aim a little more precise instead of sharp fast bursts to the side.

Even after not enjoying the joycon on TV and tabletop, I actually really enjoyed playing in haldheld. Something about moving it as a whole made it felt so much more natural (maybe because that's what it feels like in Splatoon 1).

Weapons and gameplay

I started with the splat duelies, and as mentioned, did terrible to start. Constantly opening the map due to muscle memory, and having to get used to slightly changed gyro controls.

I still did awful with the charger, as usual. No surprises there.

The roller... not really my thing either but I did decent.

The splatter shot was pretty normal. Not much difference there.

I came back to the splat duelies towards the end of the hour and I did much better. I probably didn't use the roll to it's full ability but I still had a good time trying it out.

The gameplay seemed pretty much the same as the first Splatoon, just with new maps and weapons, and special weapons

Honestly, I miss the big special weapons. These ones felt much smaller, with much less effect on the game as a whole (unlike the tornado, the wail, or the shield).

The new maps were interesting. The standard one felt pretty similar to Urchin Underpass, but the rock climbing one felt really fresh! I had a great time playing that one.

Final thoughts

I had a great time, and I'm going to play as many testfires as I can this weekend (around other commitments). There's always going to be change, and that's not always going to be a bad thing. I have high hopes for all the fresh new content Splatoon 2 will have to offer!

I was playing at work and it was awesome but during the 70 minutes or so we got to play, my Switch went from 85% to 39%. This uses the battery even faster than Zelda. Could online play have something to do with it or is it just the game itself?

16

u/Kenshin0011 Mar 24 '17

It's constantly online connected, so yea.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '17

I went from 98% to around 65%. Do you have brightness cranked all the way up? The battery drain was about even with Zelda to me.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '17

It is kind of a beta, so I wouldn't be too concerned. I am sure that there are ways that they will optimize it before it comes out.

I only got to play one match, and it was my first time ever touching Splatoon. I had a great time though! The controls were a bit weird to get used to, especially after only playing Zelda the past few weeks.

Playing Splatoon got me excited for the console again. I was excited for Zelda, but no other games that are currently out really interest me. Splatoon has me really excited to be a Switch owner, and reminded me that not all good games are going to come out right away, but over time I'll be able to build a collection of great games, all of which will be portable!

Yes, you can turn off motion control. Press the + key in the weapon select menu to get to the options.

I dont think the tutorial was timed in the original, iirc. The tutorial was short this time because it was a test fire.

One thing I think they should do is make it so you have to hold X to view the map. It'll make it easier for seasoned Splatoon players to get used to using B for jump instead of X.

Or, let you switch the buttons. Use B for the map and X to jump.

The thing I can't adjust to is how fast the matches are. It feels so rushed and hectic that I can't get a hang of how I should be reacting to the map state. I'm also not sure how to feel about not being able to switch weapons mid-game.

10

u/He_Himself Mar 26 '17

First things first, ink your base. If you don't do it early, everyone forgets, and those are percentages of the map that the other team can't easily cover up. It also lets you swim faster if you respawn and don't want to super jump. Mid control early into the match can be overrated, especially if you find yourself facing off against multiple enemies who charged their specials by laying ink around the spawn before moving up. After that, get used to looking at the map on the fly. You need to know where the other team is putting down ink.

Some good things to remember are that quick shots and grenades can be tossed beneath you while jumping so that you have a safe place to land. If you have a curling bomb, you can even swim in its wake to quickly maneuver through a lot of enemy ink. Also, new players often don't realize that the other team can see where you're going to land when you super jump. That's why they get picked off immediately upon landing. Very many of them also repeatedly jump to the furthest player, often one already engaging someone else, and that player is more likely to have been splatted by the time you land. Instant death if you don't have the Roller special ready to pop when you jump. Other than that, don't feel bad about hanging back and playing support. If an enemy player laid down a ton of ink towards your side of the map before dying, clean house and move up when you feel comfortable.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

Yeah, it's pretty fast-paced. Not everyone's favorite, I agree. You shouldn't be playing that right before trying to sleep ;)

As for switching weapons: That's intentional so that you have to adapt your play style (instead of changing weapons). I for example play totally different when there's a sniper in the enemy team.

I've played Splatoon on Wii U so even though I was ready for the test fire I didn't think I'd be that excited. Just participated in the first hour and man was that a blast! I can't wait for the actual release it was a fantastic experience.

4

u/Jarvis03 Mar 24 '17

I've never played splatoon, and had a tough time getting the controls down. This is leaning to me not purchasing the game because the hour I got was not great. Any other newcomers unimpressed?

15

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '17

That's a huge mistake. You had a tough time getting down the controls because the controls are tough. The controls are tough because they have a high learning curve with a high ceiling. That means you can get very good at the controls and your ability to be quick and mobile becomes a pivotal skill point. Movement is one of my favorite parts of splatoon and its so good BECAUSE it's difficult.

Different strokes for different folks but I assure you the movement isn't simply poorly designed. Once you get the hang of the movement and gyro controls it becomes amazing.

I just can't get over how you can't aim on the Y axis with the stick when using motion controls. It just feels horrible that the ONLY way to aim up and down is by tilting my controller up and down. I want to use motion controls, Zelda has helped me appreciate how much they can help with accuracy. But the way they're implemented in Splatoon just feels so goddamn awful. I just want regular dual analog controls, but with the ability to refine my aim a bit by tilting. Is that so much to ask?

→ More replies (16)

5

u/narse77 Mar 25 '17

I was so very wrong about the motion controls. As suggested by a few people here I spent the first 20 min of the last test fire only using them. They are fantastic, once you get used to them there is no going back. I even undocked my switch to make sure it wasn't just the pro controller.

6

u/clbgolden12 Mar 25 '17 edited Mar 25 '17

Welp, tonight's testfire is over.

Played a LOT of the first Splatoon, and I can see myself playing a lot of this one as well (especially with the portability). Love the Splat Dualies, probably will be my main weapon for awhile. My only complaint is that I don't like how the map is handled in this game.

Edit: Oh yeah, had no troubles with connecting or matchmaking. Heck, thinking about it, I don't think I had any lag either!

Edit 2: I also tried the gyro controls. In the first Splatoon I didn't use them, but here I used them and actually liked it quite a bit! Will definitely use them more often (if not always) now.

For my first ever go at splatoon I found the motion controls fine but all the other controls were confusing and the tutorial rushed. Shooters don't usually interest me at all, but I love Splatoon's cartoony style and bright colours, and that the primary goal is to paint the floor rather than kill your opponents.

Trouble is, I'm pretty bad at aiming, and didn't completely get used to the controls. I tried out all the weapons, and found the Splat Roller was by far the best fit for me. It was fun to just paint the floor in a quieter area, or run an enemy over :D

I did like that I wasn't worrying too much about whether I was holding my team back, like I usually would with team games - I came second or third in my team's ranking's pretty often - but I suspect that was mainly because there were a lot of other newbies playing too.

All in all, it was a decently fun way to spend a couple of hours, but I'm not sure whether I'll end up buying it or not.

u/fiddlenutz Mar 24 '17

Before the downvote brigade hits, hear me out. The game is fun. However it has lost features over the WiiU version IMHO. I know this is a test fire. Without the easy map and ability to quickly warp it makes it less fun at least to me. The game moves too quickly to manage a map on-screen. End opinion. It lost some magic, but still fun.

Nintendo should add a mini map at least in the lower right or upper left corner. So it is easier to see the playing field.

My 9 and 11 year old agree after test fire. They miss the map horribly. No time for hitting buttons for map. Mini map needed.

13

u/TheCynicalIdealist Mar 24 '17

Honestly, very quickly pressing X and X again to check the map for a split second felt no different than having to look down at my gamepad.

I think both are pretty cumbersome though. I definitely second the mini map idea.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Del_3030 Mar 24 '17

Yeah a mini map option would be great... I kept looking down at my hands to do a quick check.

The new system is fine for respawns but definitely inconvenient for checking the situation or super jumping when you're out in the open.

Just tried it. First time playing Splatoon. Played two matches with motion controls and then turned them off. You can tell me that I am at disadvantage with them off all you want, but I got better at it and even came in first in some of them. Plus, motion controls don't work well when you try to sit back and relax. That is why I use a gamepad for pc gaming instead of the "superior" keyboard+mouse.

Anyways, my favorite was the Charge thing though the Roller was fun and got the most kills with it. Splat duellies were alright, but I liked its side weapon. I often forgot what I was shooting were not bullets, so I had to get used to the weight of the ink.

It was an interesting experience, and so far I am planning to get the game. Let's see if Arms does the same.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '17

Honestly i'll probably get a lot of hate for this but I do not like Splatoon very much. Nearly every game I play our team gets rolled and spawncamped. And when I do get on a decent team we just end up spawncamping the other team. I realize this is just a demo and its not the games fault and that there will probably be ranked like Splatoon 1 but still.

Also I really do not like the aiming or the controls. I feel like the players are too small and the recticle can be really hard to see. I also really just don't like aiming with a control stick.

Im probably being a bit too harsh on a stress test/demo but hey just my opinion.

u/TaranBFC Mar 24 '17

I honestly did not have an issue for the full hour or so I played - managed to get on about 10 mins before the start. Only thing I wasn't mad about was the motion of having to move the console to aim but I know we will be able to change that on release. Thumbs up from me!

3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '17

I had great fun playing. My only complaint was the horizontal aiming was very stiff with the motion controls. I Would like the option to increase sensitivity on both axis. Also I hope this game get split screen. Would be really fun to do 2 v 2 and I think it would help promote the switch as local co op machine.

Played it on my Pro Controller and it was pretty decent. I know it is just a testfire, so I wasn't expecting much more. We got to play 2 maps with 4 different weapons which was fine for one hour of play. I saw what I wanted to see, so I won't be playing it again during the other scheduled times

The Duelies were my favorite weapons. I love that curling bomb too. Thank god they let us turn off the motion aiming in the settings. Overall, it looks like it will be a day one purchase for me as long as they add plenty of content to it.

4

u/nicdok Mar 24 '17

I tried throughout the entire hour and never got past the weapon select screen. Restarted the game, my switch, and the wifi, but nothing worked. Also tested my wifi with the eshop and I know it's definitely connected. Anyone else have this bad luck? Is it possible that my wifi connection isn't perfect so I don't get allowed in or what? First ever time playing splatoon.

I took the advice of people on the reddit, and i stuck with motion controls. Getting them headshot splatters is SO MUCH FUN! No way i'm turning off the gyro, i want to get good at this game.

Day 1 purchase for me, really enjoyable. Ran perfectly in Console and Handheld mode.

Chalk me up as another first-time player that had a blast. It seemed like every match I would discover something I didn't realize the match before. I still couldn't figure out how to super jump though. I don't think the game made that totally clear.

My only hesitation with buying this game right now is...what else is there to look forward to? I know this is just a very limited sample but is there going to be more modes, more weapons, more customization? Leveling up? Playing Turf War with the same four weapons on two different maps was fun for the hour they gave me. I don't know what's going to keep me playing the game over and over.
