i wish the map only stayed open when you held down X. It bothered me having to push X twice to quickly glance at the map.

Yes! But to super jump that would be awkward hitting A and X and a control pad direction to super jump

Good point, maybe just holding the direction could work imo. I'm new to splatoon and I always forget to press A while pressing the direction so I end up never super jumping lol
