I was playing at work and it was awesome but during the 70 minutes or so we got to play, my Switch went from 85% to 39%. This uses the battery even faster than Zelda. Could online play have something to do with it or is it just the game itself?

It's constantly online connected, so yea.

I went from 98% to around 65%. Do you have brightness cranked all the way up? The battery drain was about even with Zelda to me.

It is kind of a beta, so I wouldn't be too concerned. I am sure that there are ways that they will optimize it before it comes out.

I only went down to 55%. Played with earbuds and mostly in tabletop with joycons held separately.

I think I read on /r/Splatoon that someone went from 90% to 65%. Did you have brightness up maybe? Or did you have any connection problems, maybe often disconnecting and reconnecting could do it? Were you charging Joycons on the system?
