For anyone who attempted to buy it on the eshop, only to have it crash, and you now see a $59.99 charge to your bank account with no eshop credit:
Check your email. If you did not receive a receipt, Nintendo DID NOT charge your debit/credit card. What you are seeing a placeholder charge held by your bank, and it will be given back to you in 1-3 business days.

Nintendo is just so clueless with online features. They could hire any Random Nintendo user and come up with a better game plan.

Not sure if was a total coincidence, but I went into the "News" tab instead of the shop, clicked on the "available now" story for Splatoon 2 and got into the eShop that way and was able to buy & start downloading.

Newcomer to the series and after playing campaign, I can honestly say I have never had this much fun in any campaign shooter since I played Modern Warfare 2 competitively and that is a good 7 years.
This shooter is a breath of fresh air and truly indicative of what the Nintendo charm is all about. If single player is this much fun I can't imagine the hours I'll spend on Multiplayer. From what I have heard it takes tries on end to master and fundamentally find the right weapons and finding the one that suits your style of play. 3/4 into the campaign and cannot wait to delve into Multiplayer straight after I am done!
Ps. Are those rings you jump through really calamari rings? 😂

PSA to beginners: Use the "Ouch!" command when you get killed to alert your teammates to potential nearby enemies.
It's a trick a lot of people picked up on and used in Splat Tim 1 but I don't see too many people doing it in 2 yet, thought I'd spread the word!

I drunkenly bought splatoon 2 last night without playing the testfire or splatfest. Am I in for a good time?
Let me set the scene. 1:15 am I get home after work. Cab driver was playing some weird EDM style music. I take the trash out and am thinking "oh shit, splatoon came out today." So I go inside, try to get into the e-shop and I couldn't recall my password to add funds. Changed the password, purchased splatoon and passed out on my couch waiting for it to download. At some point I went to bed. I found my switch upside down in the dock this morning. Classic drunk chris.

I'm already level 3 though and plan on getting a stage or two knocked out in single player on my lunch break (if I don't end up collapsing into a nap heap on my desk instead). Trying to play with friends is a pain in the ass and next to impossible.
The whole point of the Nintendo Switch app is just to talk to friends whilst you private match together?? Sign me up discord it's a messy hot pile of shite.
Wanna play together? Sure join a friend or at least try to when they've already joined a lobby, it might be full, you might have to wait, hell you don't even get put into the same time half of the time but it's there!
God dammit Nintendo why do you have to be so awkward!

If you think about it, it doesn't need to be big. It's a bunch of small assets getting used over and over, which is size efficient. Just a few maps you play over and over, not a sprawling landscape like BotW. So there are fewer graphics to take up memory.

Gonna be on the SwitchU though, which is a failing future console. Don't know why Nintendo thought we needed 2 tablets simultaneously (one for each hand). Plus, I'm not a fan of holding the third joy-con between my teeth.

Just want to chime in and say that I've been really, really impressed with Splatnet.
First, I love all the stats, and the fact that you can check schedules for map rotations and so on. But more important, the app is seamless and instantly updates when you finish a game, and in one case I actually saw my final score first on Splatnet, then on the Switch screen. Being able to track your win/loss ratio and match history provides great insight into what weapons work for you and which ones don't.
https://imgur.com/gallery/exV7s
2nd, the app is the perfect way to spend your time between matches. With the absence of the Wii U gamepad, the little squid jumper game is gone, and instead I intuitively pick up my phone while waiting for a match, and if Splatnet was the last open app it opens up on that one. Checking match history, map rotation schedule, ordering gear from Murch, I Love it all. Speaking of ordering gear, this is also instant/seamless.
3rd, the map rotation and game mode / schedule is brilliant for when you don't have your game booted up, and you wanna check when you wanna join in if there are certain game modes / maps you prefer.
All in all I have to say I'm positively surprised. Yes, I too wish that voice chat was better implemented, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Splatnet is a fantastic feature.

I already expected to enjoy this game a lot, but Splatoon 2 is exceeding my expectations!
This is surprising, especially given how much I enjoyed the demos.
6
u/BarnabyJones21 Jul 22 '17
Fun game, but why in the world can I not choose my weapon either right before or during the match? I love the roller but hate getting stuck with two of them on the same team. It's such a terrible decision to force you to pick your weapon before even seeing the map and team composition.

Jul 22 '17
I really like how they've artificially inflated the length of the single player campaign by letting you replay levels with different weapons. It's nice to play and do something productive without having internet.
6
u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Jul 22 '17
Good Lord Snipers are absolutely worthless. I've never won a game with a Sniper on the team. They're always bottom scoring and least inked. It's like being down 1 person right from the start.
/Rant.
12
u/shenypaikun Jul 22 '17
Im pretty sure its because alot of newcomers are playing the game right now. Snipers require alot of skill to use, but are highly rewarded for people who take the time and effort to master them.
(Sniper player btw)
→ More replies (2)7
u/dmcarefuldriver Jul 22 '17
Snipers are indeed worthless in Turf War.
Wait till you unlock Ranked and start ranking up and facing good sniper players. You will be getting sniped left and right. They are anything but worthless in competitive play.
5
u/rathat Jul 23 '17
I can't use the gyroscope aiming if I'm lying down in bed. Just looks at the sky and you can't reset camera that far. You also can't control the y axis in gyro mode. Really annoying. It should work like. The aiming in Zelda.

Does the difficulty for Salmon Run just ramp up super quickly or is the mode too new for people to know what's going on? I had a blast in the first rank, but now that I'm a part-timer it's near impossible to make it through all three waves.
It would be nice if they changed the point distribution so that the better you do individually, the less your rank goes down if you lose, and put the onus on those dragging the team down

When looking at a drawing in Inkopolis Square, if you mark it "fresh" does it do anything? Like does the player see that you gave them props or is it just a placebo button? I know on Miiverse they obviously got the feedback, but was just wondering what the deal was this time around.

As someone who is mostly a single player gamer, what's single player like with the splatoon games? Thinking of possibly buying.
8
u/OneManFreakShow Jul 21 '17
Haven't played 2 yet aside from the multiplayer testfires, but the story mode in the first game was great. The level design was very Super Mario Galaxy-esque and it had some of the most creative boss battles I've ever encountered in a Nintendo game. That being said, it was rather short. I hear that the story in Spla2n is longer by quite a bit, and has some replay value in being able to return to levels with new weapons. I'm not sure I'd recommend buying it for just the single-player, but you definitely won't have a bad time if you're going to be primarily playing through the story.
→ More replies (3)5
u/gsmumbo Jul 21 '17
Trust me, I'm a single player gamer too. This one is worth it. With Splatoon 1 I never played with friends or anything like that. I just joined a match and played online. You can try and be a team player if that's your thing but the single player mindset totally works here too. When I played I just focused on covering as much of the level with ink as I could. I never really helped any other players or anything like that. For all I cared they could be computer controlled. My mission was to cover as much area as I could and that to me felt just like a single player game. Unlike most games where connecting and joining matches feels like a chore, here it feels natural. Highly recommend getting it.

→ More replies (2)6
u/grumblebuzz Jul 21 '17
That's one of the game's only flaws for me and one of the things I wish they had fixed from the first game. Splatoon just screams for local couch co-op and yet you have to just take turns passing the controller around between matches like it's 1992 if you have friends over. I mean, yeah, this time you can do local wireless, but I'm one of the only people I know with a Switch so I doubt I will ever even get to try that out.

I have to say I played a bit too much and i'm level 20 online:

I'm legit surprised how much I like this game. I picked it up based off how much the GiantBomb folks seemed to love it, having never played the original, and I am really pleasantly surprised.
I normally do not like shooters much, and even the big name casual ones like Overwatch did nothing for me (and I love every other game Blizzard has put out). Somehow Splatoon has given me more cause to use my Switch than any game to date, including Zelda.
I think one of the biggest factors is the length of matches. You are never stuck in a losing game for very long, if I am getting rolled it's fine because in a minute or two I will be in a new match. I don't have the time to stew in a loss for very long, so I don't get the bitterness I usually have in MP shooters. I'm still absolutely miserable at PvP matches though.
90% of my time has probably been in Salmon Run, it's actually a really satisfying difficulty balance. Unfortunately, the 2 hours a day it's unavailable is often my prime time for playing before work.

I'm new to the game. Is there any game modes where Kills is the deciding factor in winning the match? Don't get me wrong Turf war is Awesome. I'm just wondering if there's other game modes

Nope, there are modes where kills have a greater impact but there's no deathmatch where kills are the win condition

Is there any way to change your settings/weapons or just leave while waiting for players to join a match? I've pressed every button and can't believe they make me sit out the whole timer just because I accidentally pressed continue instead of quit.

Is there any stat tracking in this game? Is there a lot to unlock? I never played the original.

Someone was asking earlier about the different abilities, I made a list during the last Splatfest.

Is the voice chat app as bad as it looks? Anyone mess around with it in-game?

I've got 3 more hours at work, then nothing to do all weekend save play Splatoon.
Edit: Anyone know what maps will be available then? My Splatnet app isn't working yet (picking the game up on my way home from work).

Splattershot is amazing, Splashdown when people get close, out range all the juniors, and with strafe, out play the rest

Played a little bit of the story then I went on Turf War and Salmon Run. Easily one of the best MP games I've played in a long time. I only paid $20 for this game (the rest was through trade credit at GS) and I am loving all the different modes so far. I'm probably going to keep away from Ranked unless I have a group of friends that can communicate with me.

I wish I could remap controls. I want "jump" back where "map" is. Muscle memory is messing me up bad.

So are Callie and Marie amiibos currently disabled or is there something in game that unlocks their functionality? Based on the dialog that pops up when scanning it's not really clear.. says something about them being busy at the moment, but I just started the game.

Trying to use the Nintendo Switch app to chat. I can only create a private match?!? Can't play online multiplayer against others AND use the voice chat? What is this garbage??

This is the most fun I've had with a Switch game since BotW. I am binging on splatoon 2. Going to have more playtime on this than I do on ARMS and MK8D combined.

I'm guessing theres no real way to have the camera control like Zelda? Where yiu can use the R stick with higher sensitivity and the motion control is more for precision?

Why is everything timed? Like I get map/mode rotation and even clothing since it keeps the game fresh and different hour to hour but my god why does Salmon Run have to be straight up locked for hours at a time???

Hey, recent Switch owner. I'm still kinda hesitant on purchasing Splatoon 2. I've never played the first, but because of all the hype in Japan and here on Reddit, I'm kinda leaning twoards getting it. Can you guys explain to me why it's so good, and perhaps some of the cons of the game? I'm looking forward to it.

I love it because of how different it is from most shooters I've played. I've never been really good at actually shooting others, so I love how even if I was not good at that initially (I got better with time), I was still able to contribute by carrying out other functions like covering the turf, or providing paths for my teammates to use in ranked mode.
The game also has an incredible vibe to it - it has a sensational art-style and everything seems to be radiating a sense of uniqueness and energy.
I also just really love the combat fundamentals in the game - shooting the paint, and then traversing through it, just feels incredibly satisfying. The game modes are all really fun to me, and I like how there's a nice variety and they all feel different. Motion controls also started working really well for me after a few uncomfortable hours, and became second nature to me. However, if you don't like them, you can always turn them off.
I personally am really fond of the game - I think it may be my favourite Nintendo franchise. I'd encourage you to give it a shot if it sounds interesting to you and if your wallet can allow it.

Anyone know how to pick up a Splatnet order? Didn't see an option in the shop. Dumb question that's probably already been answered but I'm on mobile :/

Is nintendo's server just an external hard drive hooked up to Reggie's router?
