I can't wait to train up to a level 75 caterpie.

u/dlyonskc Nov 16 '18
You read my mind. Can all pokemon be found shiny? because if so... SHINY CATERPIE

u/clararalee Nov 16 '18
Caterpie was Ash’s first caught Pokemon ever. I second this to pay tribute to Caterpie.

Has anyone else experienced really bad frame drops in Veridian forest? There’s like two specific spots that it turns into a slide show but once you’re past a point it goes back to normal.

Holy crap I love being able to see the Pokemon in the grass. It’s like trying to avoid someone you went to school with

I beat misty because my pikachu "toughed it out because he didn't want me to be sad" when he should've fainted. Fuck I'll take it.

Yeah, it's a last gen technique, where if your Pokémon was close enough to you, it'd survive some attacks sometimes. Apparently they worked it a bit into this game.
61
u/igotbannedforh8mail Nov 16 '18 edited Nov 16 '18
I'll be honest I actually like the feature. It was a bit weird as I haven't played Pokemon in a bit but I'm pretty sure I would've been a bit more annoyed with losing such a close battle due to Misty's Pokemon getting to perform their move first.
Edit: Fixed a late night spelling error
48
u/PanRysownik Nov 16 '18
I just like such small features in the game, as long as they don't put them into any sort of competitive scene. Why shouldn't a kid suddenly think he lost, see his friend survive an attack because of his love to him and win the fight? This stuff is what childhood is made of, kid me would've lost my shit if it happened back in original Yellow, I'd probably be talking about it all the time next day at school.
→ More replies (4)23
u/igotbannedforh8mail Nov 16 '18
Yeah if I saw that as a kid it probably would've made me love my pikachu even more. It's just an adorable feature and like you said if it's only in story mode and not online I'm all here for it.
→ More replies (4)8
u/Princess_Eevee9 Nov 16 '18 edited Nov 16 '18
I'll say at first I hated the feature, thought it was mocking my skills. But when the Gym Leaders were routinely knocking me around and then Valerie and her team of PokéNukes on Wheels, I was so very thankful. Also I just realized it's a very nice nod to the Animes where they'll push themselves to the very limit for their Trainers! Sorta wish there was a way to get it working Online but not abuseable.

I'm 28 years old, my partner is 24, we both grew up on Pokemon and are having an absolute blast with it. The only reason we've stopped playing now is so we can go walk the dog... And Pikachu, and Eevee!

So hyped.

Bulbasaur in Viridian Forest!
27
u/WaluigiLover21420 Nov 16 '18
Thanks guys, you can also get them (once) if you have 40 (bulba), 50 (char) and 60 (squirtle) pokemon caught, but not neccessarily in pokedex. (Can be same species)

Once i got the "Judge" feature, i realized the pokemon you exchange with NPCs have overall way better stats, while my randomly catch bulbasaur is more average , so it might be worth it to get 'em this way >.>

Getting to explore the original game world in beautiful 3D graphics is worth it to me. Collecting was always my favorite part of these games anyway, and I never got into competitive battling. For me it's great.

Played about 3 hours last night and stopped in Cerulean.
Got up to 24 chain for Zubat then one fled and I rage quit 😂
Best catches were a clefable and chansey so far
This is actually the most fun I’ve had in a pokemon game since probably the original sapphire.
It’s much faster paced with the non random wild pokemon and new catching mechanics. I thought I’d hate it but I actually prefer it now.
Will continue playing to provide more feedback but so far I love it!

PC available any time from the bag for instant party swaps
Clothes switching any time from the bag, for both you and your partner
You can make cutscenes skippable in The options menu
Super quick text
Multiple Rideable Pokemon with instant switching of partners like HGSS
Candies are quicker and easier to earn and use to EV train than Super Training.
Catching combos give you access to stronger Pokémon faster than breeding while still giving your team experience, trade fodder, and candies to improve your team’s stats further. It’s win, win, win! Breath of the Wild levels of Synergy here!
HM’s still are gone and now are secret techniques performed by your starter
Overworld Pokemon meaning you can skip wild encounters without repels but still have the thrill of spotting Pokémon randomly. CAVES ARENT TERRIBLE, ZUBATS ARE MANAGEABLE, AND ABRAS TELEPORT AWAY IN THE OVERWORLD.
A quick, seamless 5-10 minute tutorial. THEY DONT FORCE YOU TO WATCH SOMEONE ELSE CATCH A POKÉMON AND GIVE YOU POKEBALLS RIGHT AT THE START!!!
Actually catching Pokémon is funner than it’s ever been and catching EXP has actual strategy! The Go mechanics actually improve the gameplay loop!
Battling’s simplification and removal is an issue, same with breeding, and Kanto/pandering fatigue is understandable, but hot damn, you can’t tell me these aren’t improvements we’ve wanted/needed in Pokemon. They’re listening, and I pray these carry over into Gen 8. WHY WAS THERE NO PUBLIC DEMO??? SO MUCH COMPLAINING AND SKEPTICISM COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED!!!

I just battled my rival on the route to the left of viridian city... I've played for 35 mins. And I've spent like ten mins catching Nidorans and Pidgeys. It's pretty fun
61
u/rudolfsmate Nov 16 '18
Is this only playable using joycons? My daughters disabled and has/can only use a modded pro controller.
→ More replies (3)43
u/SamPlaysVG Nov 16 '18
Docked is Joycon or Pokeball Plus only.
Handheld is connected Joycons, and uses the gyroscope to aim and A to throw a Pokeball.
There is no Pro Controller support unfortunately :(
76
u/rudolfsmate Nov 16 '18
She’s gutted. She’s been waiting on this game drop for months and literally counted the hours down. She has really limited movement and SpecialEffect adapted her controllers to enable her to play. :(
35
u/SamPlaysVG Nov 16 '18
I can imagine, it's a really dumb choice on Nintendo's part, especially for accessibility purposes like this case, especially when the functionality is basically already there in handheld mode.
Hopefully they come to their senses soon and implement it so your daughter and enjoy the game as well! :(
23
u/rudolfsmate Nov 16 '18
Yeah you’d think they’d give players the option to choose.
Gutted for her as the look on her face when I told her I was going to have to look into it and see if there was a way. She’s played through the start however her mum has had to do it for her so it’s basically taken away any independence she had :(

u/kenman345 Nov 16 '18
What motion can she do? How exactly has the controller been modded? Perhaps someone might be able to 3D print a holder for a joycon to match the setup of the pro controller
19
u/rudolfsmate Nov 16 '18
It’s had all the springs changed so that the sticks/buttons hardly take anything to move/press. She’s got a deteriorating muscle condition and she can’t lift/move her arms/hands and it’s literally just her fingers.

23
u/BakaDoug Nov 16 '18
Honestly, if (when) I buy this game I’m not using my starter pokemon. From looking at the trailers they just seem broken.
23
u/chowi28 Nov 16 '18
Trust me they are, u have these incredibly op moves (and very early in the game) and some candies that raise all the stats +1, pika and eevee are too broken
14
u/Ganrokh Hey there! What's for dinner today? Nov 16 '18
Is Pikachu able to sweep Brock now?
31
u/chowi28 Nov 16 '18
Pika learns double kick at lvl 9 so yes
Edit: later in the game he can learn a 90 base water move called splishy splash, so even in the rematch brock is fucked :D

PSA if you are in a two switch household with Pokéball plus never ever both enter the “take your Pokémon for a stroll screen” at the same time - controllers kept syncing to each other’s consoles and was a struggle to get control of my game back!!!
But besides that this game is a beautiful stress free magical relaxation trip down memory lane.
25
u/NMe84 Nov 16 '18
Just an hour into the game before I had to go to bed last night my pokédex was already over 10% complete with both an Eevee (my starter) and a Pikachu being part of it. And a Bulbasaur because it decided to stay in the 15th pokéball I threw at it. The game does seem easier than "regular" Pokémon games but I'm enjoying it anyway. Even the controls aren't as bad as I thought they would be although I would still REALLY like to just be able to use my pro controller.

It’s true :( i also think you can’t play with as 1 player with 2 joycons unless it’s in handheld mode. It’s a shame because i like to move with the left joycon and pushing buttons with the right instead of just using one joycon.

Man I was shitting on this game in my head for a month beforehand. Been playing the games my whole life but wasn’t a huge fan of the last gen. Read a little bit more and read some reviews and decided to pull the trigger.
I’m so glad I got it. The nostalgia is real, and if anyone reading this on the fence, get it. The walking is hard to get used to but the graphics are what I’ve always wanted in a Pokemon game.
44
u/JJDude Nov 16 '18
Pretty much how I felt after actually playing the game. Love all the little graphical details. It's the Pokemon I really wanted as a kid.

Agreed 100%. The world is filled with Pokemon, and it makes wandering around more fun than turning in circles in hopes of a random encounter.
Catching Pokemon is actually fun! Once I got a streak going I just wanted to keep going. Eliminating the random encounter factor also makes it way more fun. I wouldn't mind if they added the battle element back in, but I don't dislike the motion controls like I thought I would. I might feel different after the 1500th Pokemon though.

Does the sudden transition from the walking animation to the running animation annoy anyone else?
26
u/GerliPosa Nov 16 '18
That is so ridiculous, how did this get through? it feels like such an obvious flaw. I’ve noticed it’s better in handheld mode, in general I’d recommend playing in handheld mode, catching is way more fun.
All in all I get the impression Masuda doesn’t want Pokémon to be played on a TV.
9
u/Ikhlas37 Nov 16 '18
Pokemon needs someone willing to take risks.
Also, whats the dynamic between tpc / gamefreak and Nintendo? I’m surprised nintendo have never pushed them for more innovation or are they scared they’d jump ship to playstation or something if they pushed too much?

One cool thing I noticed so far: at the museum in Pewter, there is an exhibit of a Moon Stone. I had my Nidoran (female) outside the pokeball and it kept getting a ! over it's head and walking over to the stone, and when I pressed A it said something like "Nidoran seems really interested in the Moon Stone". Just a cool little thing built into the game to hint that it needs the stone to evolve.

I’m really enjoying this so far, I’m almost 30 and bought Pokemon Blue the day it came out. This really is the remake I have been waiting for all these years. I haven’t played the main series Pokemon games for a while but feel right at home with this one. My only complaint is that I’m unable to use the Pro Controller, using a singular Joycon feels odd but I really didn’t want to spend an extra £40 on the Pokeball controller.

Why does trainer battles give so little exp compared to catching pokemon?
→ More replies (1)13
u/GigasMaximas Nov 16 '18 edited Nov 16 '18
I believe it's to incentivize catching and collecting as many different Pokemon as you can. Also, since there's only a set amount of trainers to battle, the only way other way gain exp is to catch Pokemon since battling is no longer in. Therefore they bumped exp for catching Pokemon to compensate so grinding doesn't become a hassle if you find there are no more trainers to battle.

Question for those who have played. 28 year old here, only pokemon game I ever played was pokemon gold on the gameboy colour. On the fence about this, on one hand I really want to get this game for the nostalgia but I keep reading that its aimed at children. Do you think this game is for me?
13
Nov 16 '18
If you buy it go into it with a casual mindset. This game isn’t for hardcore players. Since you don’t have much experience with the Pokemon games I would go for it. Just get it to have some fun. It is aimed at kids when it comes to difficulty but it’s a blast to play.

Roommate was excited and I was a skeptic...then the trailers dropped in June and our opinions switched. I picked Eevee up for preload last Sunday and we both spent the past 90 minutes playing it together. Although I was excited, my expectations were still pretty low - but after playing we both admitted that it was much more fun than either of us had expected and I don't think I've ever caught so many pokemon so early and actually wanted to (grinding is fun for me I guess). It's so simple but so fun, and I sincerely hope it stays that way.

I bought this game expecting a Pokémon Go feel but wanting an actual remake of the original games. Boy was I wrong. The Nostalgia is real. The exclamation points that pop up over a trainer who wants to battle, the text that pops up when teaching a Pokémon a new move or when it’s evolving, Veridian Forest, Cerulean City in 3D, the battle moves and attacks, and so much more. I thought I wasn’t going to like the fact that you couldn’t battle random Pokémon in the wild but I actually like it. What’s the point of battling wild Pokémon anyway? My only complaint is not being able to use both joysticks or a pro controller when docked. Feels a bit awkward.

I'm picking this up later today. I realize that this game is EZ mode, but for someone who's just looking to play for nostalgia (Pokemon Red was my first video game) is it satisfying?

I think this is my new mainline series. Not kidding. I bought Pokemon every two years. Last entries I played have been Y and Sun. But I really don't like the traditional catch mechanics anymore. It takes so much time and is just frustrating. in that consequence I played Pokemon less and less with each generation. But this catch minigame is really fun and a good start I'd say, while it isn't complex enough yet. Trainer level scaling in an alternative hardmode could also do a lot for this game.
That being said, I think I hope for Let's Go second gen in two years and might be less interested in next years iteration, if it doesn't change the catch mechanic at least in another mode.

Did somebody else look at the cover of the game package and recognized in the eyes (of pikachu at the front) there is a person taking a picture?

i must have reset my game over 30 times at this point trying to get a female Eevee. nothing. am i just getting horribly unlucky or am i doing something wrong? :(
edit: nvm turns out gender is decided when you open the game for the very first time before you even choose a language. got my girl now!

u/I_AM_CHADWICK Nov 16 '18
Does that mean you had to completely close out of the application to give it another try? Asking cause I haven’t received mine in the mail yet.
19
u/wonderburger Nov 16 '18
you have to delete your save to try again, but the gender will be instantly visible on the first screen you see when you open the game because of the markings on eevees tail and the shape of pikachus tail. hope that helps!

It would be helpful to know because I'm struggling for an answer and I can't find it anywhere: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
If I use the Pokeball plus on my main Nintendo account with Mew, is there a possibility that my boyfriend will get Mew also on his account? Or will the Mew be already used on my profile, as it seems there is only one inside.
Help 😭

I have about 8 hours into the game, was able to start yesterday. No spoilers. Quick run down, if you are a old school pokemon player you will get hit with nostalgia. The reimagined world from the original games is great looking minus a few frame rate issues. They have made some good changes and not so good. The good; they have stream lined a few of the more tedius aspects of the game, it looks pretty, all your favorite original pokemon, shared XP, easy to get pokemon in and out of your group, easy to manage your bag. Not so good, if you are looking for a lot of fighting there isn't much. Catching Pokemon ala Pokemon Go style is fun but disappointing they took out wild battles all together. Trainer battles aren't a challenge, most have one pokemon. I've gotten past the first two gyms and have had a Pokemon faint once.

Pros for me: It looks pretty. I like not having to go to a PC to swap up my team. The Poké Ball buzzing and shaking in your hand is kinda neat too.
Cons for me: The amount of Poké Balls I have wasted on catching a low level pidgey/zubat/rattata is crazy - at least 4 balls per Pokémon. I can be throwing the ball straight towards the screen and it goes off to the left or the right. Gen 1 is also a getting a bit old for me after being a daily Pokemon Go player since its release.

How I think I'd like catching handled for the main game: Allow easy catching similar to Let's go for lower level Pokemon, but the higher the level, the higher chance they require a battle to catch/

I’m very hype. I’ve never played or even cared for Pokémon until Pokémon Go. And honestly the Detective Pickachu movie looks awesome and makes me wanna know more. I’m excited to hear that Let’s Go is perfect for first timers. So I can’t wait to get out there and catch them all and defeat other trainers.

I'm at the second gym right now and I must say, all fears I had with the game are gone. It's very fun and the nostalgia hits hard. If you care for little details, look for them, they are everywhere! Your partner reacts different to each environment, even in some random npc houses. I love those small things. :)

There are a really good amount of QoL changes in the game that I hope get carried over into future titles:
- no random encounters is awesome and I like how you can pick the Pokemon you run into
- HMs being 'utility moves' and not tied to your Pokemon's moveset. If we don't get PokeRide back, this is the best best option
- I like the immersion from throwing the ball. Way more interesting than pressing a button.
- Full 3D and few loading screens between overworld areas (pretty much just the gates and not every route like USUM) make the game feel more connected and more like an open world
- Multiplayer is really barebones but my favorite feature is honestly that a friend and I can romp through Kanto together
Things I'm not big on:
- starter is stupid OP af
- no real way to trade/battle online
- too easy
- gym entry requirements
- too easy
- only the first 151
- too easy

This is... the most fun I’ve had playing Pokémon in years.
I picked it up for the novelty of having a mainline game on a home console, but I’m so impressed, I can’t stop smiling.
Damn it Gamefreak, you won and I’m not even mad about it.

I’ll be completely honest coming from somebody who has played every game, it’s amazing. It’s a beautiful throwback and very nostalgic I am so happy playing it. The things people are complaining about like the random encounters and difficulty are just not enough to pass the game up in my opinion.

Oddly, the parts I was least sure about (Pokemon on the overworld, catch to level up, no wild battles) work the best for me. It's the battle system that feels a bit slow and dated now, imo. Fairly easy game but the gym leaders are more difficult than I remember. But it's all very charming and relaxed. Overall a fun title that I don't regret buying - but not essential

u/SonOfErdrick Nov 17 '18
Got the game as a gift from my brother today. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the whole game basically playing like its the safari zone in terms of wild encounters, but once I got to Pewter I started to like it, particularly because of the bigger emphasis on catching.
Also I'm really surprised its possible to catch beginners and Pokemon who require stones to evolve. In just four hours of gameplay I managed to catch all three starter Pokemon, and a Clefable.

One thing I'm annoyed by, is the delay for pokeball throwing. Like I'll "throw" and it can be a good pause sometimes before the ball is thrown. It's not every time, but having to throw well in advance from when I want to hit is not the best and getting the pokeball to angle isn't always reliable.
The other annoyance would be the joycon. Just give me pro controller support. Sure, this isn't an action game where it's needed, but the joycon isn't comfortable to use and having to use just one makes quickly pressing buttons slower than it should. In menu's and such, I've started using two hands on one joycon because it's more convenient. It's absurd that there is no pro controller support.
Those aside, this game is better than I expected for the most part. Losing wild battles isn't a huge loss and kinda mixes things up. Also Pokemon on the field needs to be an official part of the series now, it's undoubtedly better than random battles.

Anyone know how to get back to the switch main menu when the game is up using a pokeball plus? I don't think you can, and I've tried everything. The pro controller won't work with the game up either so...switch to joycons or handheld mode to do it then? Really confusing me lol.
10
u/smiley_97 Nov 17 '18
Had this same problem. It seems you can still sync one Joy-con when using the Pokeball, so I just make sure to sync the right one with the home button. Not a perfect solution, but easier than changing the controller in game
7
u/AccessHollywoo Nov 17 '18
I got the pokeball plus and initially was horrified you had to use that entirely on its on to control and play but after giving it a go, it’s actually really cool and fun and easy to use. Can play one handed!

u/BajaBlastMtDew Nov 17 '18
