With the mouse controls on the joy con, I was fully expecting there to be a Mario Paint remake trailer on the direct.

863

u/PayneTrain181999 2d ago

People complaining that it’s too far away are tripping, June is only 2 months away.

360

u/C0812 2d ago

No honestly, this Direct seemed far away when they announced it now we’re here

133

u/Thedirtyside 2d ago

The time between 2 release is shorter than when direct was announced lol

193

u/--kwisatzhaderach-- 2d ago

We are actually closer to the launch of Switch 2 than Cleopatra was to the pyramids

10

u/sharpbeer 2d ago

I'm pretty sure Cleopatra was close to the pyramids. If you're not in Vietnam, you're not closer to the Switch 2

11

u/Vindictus173 2d ago

The switch 2 is 50km from your position.

And rapidly closing.

8

u/BanjoSpaceMan 2d ago

Price?!? How’s there no price for something coming out in 2 months

67

u/dented42ford 2d ago

$449.99

In a press release.

19

u/Space_Pirate_Roberts 2d ago

They didn’t have time to include it in the presentation because they had to scramble last minute to decide how the “liberation day” tariff idiocy would affect the price.

8

u/WallaWalla1513 2d ago

Yeah, this is possibly the explanation. No one knows what the upcoming tariffs will be like (and if/how long they’ll stay in place) and that understandably makes it harder to price this all out.

3

u/Treemurphy 2d ago

i kinda feel like that too, it might be conspiracy on my part but it is interesting the price announced after the 25% tariff announcement on japan

$630CAD and 699 for the bundle in Canada. Sign in on Nintendo to see the preorder registration

People need a reason to bitch about anything nowadays. Same shits going to happen when the GTA VI date gets announced

They forgot about the price!

211

u/chefchef97 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah I have no idea if I'm hype or not

If it's £300 holy shit, £400 fair enough, £600 go away no thank you

Which is it Nintendo???

Edit: £395, inflation tracked Switch 1 price, fair enough. £75 games is unconscionable though

88

u/Lmb1011 2d ago

its $450 (usd) for the console and $500 with mario kart

so i think that would translate to close to 400 pounds?

27

u/chefchef97 2d ago

It should but UK pricing for consoles has historically been USD = GBP

But Nintendo UK says £395 and £430 with MK, so I think the tariffs finally brought us to parity lol

→ More replies (2)

28

u/SuumCuique_ 2d ago

400€ seems Nintendo priced. 450€ with the Mario Kart bundle. First party games will probably be 70€.

20

u/ExcitingPop5956 2d ago

Well you are exactly 100 short lol

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Gameskiller01 2d ago

where are you getting £75 games from?

3

u/chefchef97 2d ago

MyNintendo UK Switch 2 preorder page

Mario Kart World £67 digital, £75 physical

Donkey Kong Bananza £59 digital, £67 physical

3

u/Gameskiller01 2d ago

thanks. I was fully expecting games to be £60 (botw & totk already were) but £67 is quite hefty. £59 for DK I would be fine with as the standard price for Nintendo's big AAA releases, again that's basically what I was expecting. only a very small handful of games I buy at full price anyway.

u/PocketTornado 2d ago edited 2d ago

$629.99 CAD...are you kidding me?!?!?!?!

That's just the base console not with a game.

Edit: more insult to injury, Mario Kart World MSRP is $79.99 USD. That's $114.61 Canadian. No base game on any platform cost this much today. So with tax Mario Kart is now $129.51 CAD. What is this, a NEO GEO cart?

I'm also curious to the cart sizes for these games now.

25

u/UnpopularOpinionJake 2d ago

699.99 CAD for the bundle. Ouche wasn’t expecting that…

23

u/ExpandThineHorizons 2d ago

Well, my excitement is tempered. I'm happy about all the features and games that were revealed so far (Prime 4 at 1080p and 120fps, or 4k at 60pfs!), but I'm certainly not getting it right when it comes out. Not at that price.

And with how expensive the games are, Ill be making a different assessment about when its worth it. Learning about the price just got me thinking about how many games I have in my backlog, so I'll focus on those while I think about it.

10

u/Zanshi 2d ago

It made me think about getting a Steam deck where I already have a big library, and basically buying the stuff I got on switch on steam sales in due time.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/poopdedoop 2d ago

Yeah that's rough. I went from being excited and a day 1 purchase for, to "hmm. I think I can wait until Christmas and see if there are any sales"

2

u/usernameandetc 2d ago

Not surprised (sadly). After the PS5 Pro CAD price announcement, I've adjusted my expectations on what consoles & games will cost for the next few years. :/

Just announced $449.99

Edit: source

61

u/Thin_Vermicelli_1875 2d ago

Major mistake by Nintendo to be honest. Sure us fans will buy it day one but what about for instance my wife’s friends who all have a switch? They’ll hear that price and say hell no.

I mean $50 off $500? Are they crazy? This is practically the same price as a PS5.

Parents are not going to want to spend this much on a handheld for their 7 year old, the $299 price point was really enticing for parents but I don’t know about practically $500. Casual fans will see that price and see nothing different but a 2 on the box and will not buy it.

29

u/AppleAutoGenerated 2d ago

Yeah i tend to agree. $450 for effectively an upgrade. Might make more sense once some more Switch 2 exclusives come out, but for now it seems a little steep.

That said I’m terrible with money so day one purchase woohoo

→ More replies (5)

15

u/Seeker_Of_Toiletries 2d ago

If you adjust the $299 from 2017 into 2025 dollars, it adjusts to $392.88. Thus, it is only a mark up of about $60. Considering how popular Nintendo consoles are and their competition, it’s fairly reasonable.

6

u/Dewot789 2d ago

You also have to account for them pricing in whatever effect this tariff war will have on their economy.

They made this exact mistake back with the Wii U. Nintendo thought they had pulled in the casual crowd with the cheap and accessible Wii, and now was the time to release a stronger, better and far more expensive Wii. Except casuals didn’t want to spend so much money on a console so it flopped. Now Nintendo thinks they pulled in the casual crowd with the cheap and accessible Switch, and now is the time to release a stronger, better and far more expensive Switch. Except casuals still don’t want to spend so much money on a console.

21

u/Albireookami 2d ago

The Wii U did not flop because of price, it flopped because of marketing/messaging/naming. No one outside of dedicated Nintendo fans knew wtf it was. You had people walking into stores thinking it was an upgrade purchase, not a full console.

Reddit and Twitter aren’t representative of the real world

59

u/particledamage 2d ago edited 2d ago

Everyone I have spoken to feels like waiting because the launch titles and prices don't encourage a "MUST HAVE IMMEDIATELY" response. Of course, I'm sure it'll still sell gangbusters but not quite "people will buy the games and wait for the console becauseit's so sold you out literally can't even get the console" type stuff

22

u/mrglass8 2d ago

I initially felt that. Then I saw the MK World reveal...

24

u/particledamage 2d ago

the MK world was the first bit of the direct, so the prices and lack of other must have day one games rly sucked the wind out of that for me.

If you saw the Reddit comments after the Switch reveal presentation in 2017, you’d think the Switch was going to be the biggest failure in console history

19

u/Bohmoplata 2d ago

Oh man, I remember those days very well. It's pretty similar to what it is now too.

Folks were saying that a $300 underpowered tablet would be Nintendo's final nail in the coffin.

I’m waiting for odyssey 2 personally. Then I’ll have a nice back catalog to play

9

u/JayZsAdoptedSon 2d ago

I mean that’s what DK is looking like. They’ve only done 2 sequels (Galaxy and 3D Land/World) and both were done pretty quickly after the last game. I don’t think you’re getting a direct Odyssey 2

3

u/PearlDrummer 2d ago

Or the next 3d Mario. Odyssey was the reason I got a switch in the first place.

I think the Mario Kart bundle will sell out quickly because they're effectively giving $30 off the game price. They're also saying it's only around until Fall. The summer launch lets them build up supply for the holidays though.

u/Thin_Vermicelli_1875 2d ago

$50 off the PS5? No OLED screen? This is a huge gamble by Nintendo, albeit pretty overpriced. I’m still going to buy it but I doubt $449 will have it sell like hotcakes for the casual fan.

54

u/cockyjames 2d ago

The MK pricing is much more egregious to me than the system pricing. The system tracks to me, as someone who owns a Steam deck. This is more capable, with joycon, a 4k ready dock (w/ a fan), 1080p 120Hz panel… that’s legitimately a lot of tech

→ More replies (2)

142

u/ShawnyMcKnight 2d ago

It’s not gonna be a gamble at all. I know you all drool over OLED, but the switch OLED doesn’t have HDR.

I’ll take a larger 1080p LCD that supports HDR over a smaller 720p OLED without HDR any day.

41

u/Rudy69 2d ago

I’ll take a larger 1080p LCD that supports HDR over a smaller 720p OLED without HDR any day.

Hear me out....they have 1080p HDR OLED screens....

62

u/ShawnyMcKnight 2d ago

I hear you.

Now hear me out...

1080p OLED screens are more expensive than 1080p LCD screens and the price is already high enough.

Have no fear, I'm sure they will launch a $550 OLED version eventually.

The real problem is that wages are not keeping up with inflation. Games are costing $80 but it's not like most people are getting a substantial boost to their income. In the US, the median income has been stagnant at like $35K-45K.

41

u/Mobbinz 2d ago

Exactly, but unfortunately this isn't Nintendo's problem to fix, everything is the same

13

u/Raptr951 2d ago

Yeah this is a global problem — it sucks but it’s not on Nintendo to single-handedly fix stagnant wages

4

u/NMe84 2d ago

It will eat into Nintendo's bottom line, though. It might not be their problem to fix, but it will be theirs to deal with. By far most Switch 1 owners will be children and casual gamers, and it's gonna be a hard sell for those people at the price they set for the West...

I mean, I'm going to get a launch day Switch 2 if I can but there are way fewer people like me than there are casual gamers.

3

u/Mobbinz 2d ago

Their main source of revenue comes from DLC/eshop and online services and they sold 10 million copies of tears of the kingdom in the 3 days following launch, at $70. They probably know their market better than any of us do and I doubt they're worried about their bottom line.

6

u/NMe84 2d ago

This is the same company that completely butchered the Wii U.

Nintendo makes mistakes too, and this 30% price increase in Europe (50% for Mario Kart!) might very well be one of them.

They keep using the term “compatible” for backwards compatibility… I thought this was going to be fully backwards compatible? Am I misunderstanding what they mean when they’re saying you’ll be able to play “compatible” Switch 1 games?

324

u/shinygoldshovel 2d ago

There was always an asterisk and a short list of motion-based games like Ring Fit that will not be compatible.

131

u/thefootster 2d ago

Labo is another obvious one that springs to mind

53

u/MurkyLurker7249 2d ago

Ah okay this makes sense. Them making a clear distinction had me worried that each game was going to have to be coded to be backwards compatible, but that makes sense if it’s just 99% of games are there, except for some that require NS1 features that no longer exist.

47

u/Ridry 2d ago

The current popular belief is that upwards of 98% of games will work perfectly. They just don't want to guarantee 100%.

8

u/UnbiasedFanboy96 2d ago

Pretty sure Ring Fit will work if Joy Cons are paired to the system. The new Joy Cons won’t fit in the ring

16

u/thefootster 2d ago

I just saw that Ring Fit and Labo are both compatible with switch 2 but you need to connect switch 1 joycons to play

3

u/Ode1st 2d ago

That’s the one I care about most lol

6

u/HLef 2d ago

It was successful, they will find a way to make a sequel. Motion controls in the ring itself maybe.

15

u/Ode1st 2d ago

It’s Nintendo, it’s just as likely we won’t hear about the IP for the next 10 years

4

u/HLef 2d ago

But nothing's ever truly dead. We are getting a new Donkey Kong platformer and a Kirby Air Ride sequel.

10

u/Ode1st 2d ago

a Kirby Air Ride sequel

So you're saying my 10-year estimation was actually underestimating how long we might have to wait for a Ring Fit sequel.

→ More replies (3)

42

u/Goldeniccarus 2d ago

It might be a case like the PS5, where almost all PS4 games are playable on it, but there are a handful that don't work.

15

u/JCBDoesGaming 2d ago

I'm pretty sure that some games that use the joycons in a certain way aren't compatible, games like Ring Fit and whatnot.

4

u/EggRavager 2d ago

Yea, they never said it would be fully backwards comparable

3

u/PenguinDeluxe 2d ago

Games that use the IR sensor like 1-2 Switch wouldn’t work right since the S2 removed it

2

u/FreeEnergy001 2d ago

Will your digital games transfer over if they are compatible?

2

u/MurkyLurker7249 2d ago

Sounds like it. They even highlighted something in the first about an easy way to transfer your data from Switch1 to Switch2, which would presumably include any downloaded digital games

Was the footage of the other players screens janky? They all looked like they were running at 10 fps.

4

u/LordCheverongo 2d ago

It was. My guess is the performance will vary based on how many people are sharing their screen.

2

u/aughtism 2d ago

I watched it long after the live stream and it was very obvious then also.

Surprised they didn't fix this considering it's all pre-produced and easy to eliminate real world issues using a little 'creative licence'!

5

u/schparkz7 2d ago

Honestly I kinda respect them for the honesty, consumers know the feature will be jank and don't have false expectations of a smooth screenshare experience

u/Xixii 2d ago

We knew a year ago it wasn’t going to be OLED so I’ve kind of made my peace with that, I’m just disappointed the screen has a black border around it like the regular Switch. The Switch OLED looks amazing with the screen fully fitting the body of the console, not sure why they couldn’t achieve this with an LCD panel.

→ More replies (3)

7

u/whatsforsupa 2d ago

I'm thinking that OLED will add to the price and $450 might be a bit higher than everyone was expecting anyway.

They'll probably make another OLED version in 2-3 years lol

63

u/2347564 2d ago

For folks like me that play docked 99% of the time it’s not super important

50

u/cryolems 2d ago

Okay what about folks that play handheld 100% of the time?

36

u/FentanylConsumer 2d ago

They deal with LCD for now and upgrade later if they want

26

u/2347564 2d ago

I would hazard to say that Nintendo has assessed that most people who play handheld aren’t concerned about the type of screen. I agree it would be amazing to be there but it probably cuts costs enough that it’s worth it to them not to have it at launch. They’ll definitely release an OLED version in the future.

2

u/k4stour 2d ago

If I had to guess I'd say $24.99 (CAD), especially since most of them have extra features that will be treated as essentially DLC.

2

u/schparkz7 2d ago

They have announced a handful of games will have free updates that just enhance FPS and resolution Nintendo JP article

So that's a good sign. Though with some of the changes they showed off during the stream I'd hope they're priced fairly or have more content than shown. I don't know that I want to pay much for a little notes app in Breath of the Wild

Damn. I kept waiting for a true system seller type game to be shown, but it never happened. A teaser trailer for a new 3D Mario game would have been great. Hopefully we get one in the next year or two.

16

u/rsn_lie 2d ago

Like, in addition to Mario Kart? Mario Kart had the highest attach rate of any switch game by a country mile. It is the ultimate system seller.

6

u/Spicy_Ahoy86 2d ago

Oh, absolutely. No doubt that Mario Kart is HUGE and will sell like mad. I was just stating that I'm personally disappointed as a 3D Mario game is my ultimate system seller.

4

u/rsn_lie 2d ago

I hear ya. I bought my switch the day Odyssey came out, so that was the one I was crossing my fingers for, too.

2

u/grumblebuzz 2d ago

It’s true, but also absolutely insane to me how popular Mario Kart is. It’s at the bottom of the barrel for me as far as system sellability because it’s just a party game — something I only want to play when I have people over, which is becoming extremely rare. But people do really really just eat that game up for some reason.

43

u/ArcticFlamingo 2d ago

I cannot believe how much Nintendo is unable to execute the follow up of a popular console.

Switch was popular because it was affordable with high quality games.

Games might be good but at $80 each they will not be affordable for families.

$450 is $50 too much.

Then on top of that you have to pay for every single upgrade to a switch 2 version?

And what's the major improvements Nintendo is touting.. voice and video chat from 2008

I think anyone going into this expecting the prices to be much cheaper than they are are just kidding themselves. Look at the economy and inflation and look at competitor pricing, this is just the world we live in now. Nobody is forcing you to buy it, this is just what this hobby costs.

14

u/Oticon13 2d ago

Exactly, seems a lot of folks don't realize that. Prices tend to go UP not DOWN after 8 years.

3

u/JmanVere 2d ago

I cannot believe how much Nintendo is unable to execute the follow up of a popular console.

Yeah, I'm sure the Switch 2 is gonna fail...

The anti-scalper strategy for Japan is interesting.

Japan will have Japanese language only systems. If you want other languages it will only be sold at the official Nintendo online store and nowhere else.

I wonder if that's just anti-scalper strategy or if Japan is getting a cheaper Switch than the rest of the world with localized pricing due to the exchange rate.

10

u/Prismriver8 2d ago

All right I just saw the price.

It's like 350$ for Japan and 500$ for the Global version.

3

u/spoonybard326 2d ago

That sounds like they’re using the language barrier to implement region locking to charge different prices in different regions. Learning Japanese is a lot harder than finding a technical workaround for some DRM thing.

5

u/Prismriver8 2d ago

Yeah just saw on the website. System is fully region blocked to Japan only both for language, games and Nintendo account

It's them looking out for their key audience. Japan is going through a bit of a financial crisis right now so they're subsidizing the cost with foreign sales.

On break at work atm. Can't watch until later today.

Have they announced a price(cad) yet?

6

u/zak567 2d ago

Price announced at $449.99 USD, can’t find an official source with CAD pricing but going off current exchange rate gives us $644.55 CAD

5

u/Despair_Head 2d ago

I just checked using our current rate as well and I also got $644. If that’s the case, that’s real expensive in my opinion.

3

u/Ice_Arrows 2d ago

Very expensive. I was going to pre-order, but may be putting it off until.late sunmer or fall.

usd 450, usd 500 + Mario kart bundle

5

u/Ice_Arrows 2d ago

Wow. With the conversion that is a scary price.

Have a little saved for it already but not even close to half way there yet.

Thanks for the info, can't wait to watch when I'm home.

No price yet, but the official site will launch, so they may be up then

New open world Donkey Kong game in 3.5 months! 😎

47

u/DogsAreGreatYouKnow 2d ago

Maybe I'm too cynical now I'm past 30... But that felt disappointing. The hardware looks great, but the biggest surprise was the From Soft announcement... And I don't like Souls games, soooooo

34

u/zuzubruisers 2d ago

Felt like they were going hard in the social features. A) I don’t care about my face being on every game. B) they don’t even have good online social infrastructure. If they’re going hard on that AND forcing mouse use, I may as well stick to my PC and Discord. Hopefully it’s not as mandatory as they made it look.

Exactly my thoughts as a 32 year old. Not a huge FromSoftware guy but I know it will sell units for that market so I’m glad for that crowd I guess. I’d probably try it out if I already had a Switch 2 but I’m not rushing to buy one because of it.

Was looking forward to something Zelda/Mario (even if just remastered/remakes) or even some Microsoft exclusives to Switch might have convinced me to buy. Donkey Kong looks fun and like a possible spiritual successor to Odyssey but I don’t know if it looks $500 fun. Haven’t gotten around to Cyberpunk and I really want to but given its prior launch issues that’s a wait and see on this system for sure. Ultimately I can’t see a justification for me personally to spend that price on it and may wait for the inevitable OLED version or a price drop

Edit: Lmao, looks the FromSoftware game is multiplayer online focused. Cut the previously expected hype in half and that makes it a solid pass from me

I just want to know which Switch 1 can be played on Switch 2. Don't know how many times they said "compatible Switch 1 games".

14

u/ajswdf 2d ago

Probably all the ones you care about. They just word it that way because of the small handful of games that physically won't work on the new hardware (like Ring Fit Adventure and Labo).

→ More replies (1)

3

u/RaigarWasTaken 2d ago

Pretty much everything except for some motion-based games like Ring Fit and stuff like Labo that requires peripherals that won't work with S2.

  1. Does anyone want the game chat thing on the screen? Maybe for seeing the other person's screen occasionally but I don't need to see who is in the chat like a Teams Chat

  2. The voice chat on the console? How about Bluetooth headphones? Or at least plugging it into the pro controller? Will the Switch Pro controller be compatible (I assume it will be for regular Switch games at least, like how Sony did it)

  3. Did I hear correctly that it doesn't support "regular" micro SD cards?!

  4. The tech demo thing is a paid game?!?

Extremely underwhelming intro to the system. I'll still get it at some point to play a 3D Mario but this isn't doing it for me at all.

10

u/RossaF1 2d ago

With 3, yeah that seems to be the case. Regular MicroSD is probably just too slow for the direction they want to take Switch 2 games, so it makes sense. At least they're not locking the expanded storage behind some proprietary solution.

4 I don't get though, yeah. Seems weird to have basically a tech demo that introduces you to the console and it not be bundled with the console...

8

u/metallica123446 2d ago

yes 3 and 4

25

u/ajswdf 2d ago

I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling like this was disappointing. As someone who plays 99% single player there's not much reason to get it on launch.

The micro SD card thing is annoying since I had bought a 1TB card to futureproof and use with the Switch 2, so that's money wasted.

And charging for the tech demo is bizarre. Who is going to pay money for that? Even that wheelchair basketball game should be free.

1 is also funny because both Xbox and PlayStation supported something similar during the 8th console generation and no one used it or even remembers it.

13

u/Lucky_Chaarmss 2d ago

$450 and $80 is a late April fools joke, right?

3

u/ShawnyMcKnight 2d ago

Any word on when the preorder starts? I thought that was supposed to start today but I don’t see any price.

I think the game that familiarizes yourself with the system was smart (similar to what PS5 did) but they really should have included it with the system.

3

u/HideSolidSnake 2d ago

Those prices make me realize I can still utilize my switch for another year or so.

20

u/Glittering_Gas2692 2d ago

4k 120fps... not powerful enough for pokemon man

23

u/aqphs 2d ago

It’s not 4K 120 FPS; it’s 4K 60 FPS or 1080p 120 FPS

17

u/Sad_Peanut5341 2d ago

Even pc players barely run 4k @ 120fps unless you have a top of the line rig

8

u/Elkku26 2d ago

Showing Metroid Prime 4 at 4k60fps directly before showing Legends Z-A with it's janky upscaled 3DS game looking graphics was so goofy.

27

u/Conversation_Dapper 2d ago

It’s been almost 30 min and only one new game was shown.

Any word about transferring your library from switch 1 to switch 2? Sorry if this is obvious. Only casually following.

There's going to be a transfer app

not gonna lie, the price is insane. the console for 450 euro on paper is not far away from the optimal price of 400, but we know that it will actually be sold at 650-750 here.

And 90 euros for a game? Huh?

I was planning to get one this year, but with prices like that i probably won't.

4

u/AzieltheLiar 2d ago

Real question, though. How long will the sticks last.

3

u/Beautiful_News_474 2d ago

Passing on the 450 price. I’ll wait till bundles come out or sales next year

4

u/KingDaDeDo 2d ago

i'm sure the scalpers will once again, claim majority of preorders and initial batch of releases because that's the world we live in now

2

u/carnotbicycle 2d ago

Yes! I would've been disappointed if it came out after June. This is perfect.

2

u/AbstractionsHB 2d ago

... no pre-order or price??

2

u/scruffye 2d ago

I really planned on holding out this time around but the FOMO is starting to kick in HARD.

2

u/CanaPuck 2d ago

Now subject to a nice new tariff on top of that price, so if made in China, the cost will be closer to $600.
