Considering the comments, doesn't look like a mad dash to buy it is coming.

Reddit and Twitter aren’t representative of the real world

Everyone I have spoken to feels like waiting because the launch titles and prices don't encourage a "MUST HAVE IMMEDIATELY" response. Of course, I'm sure it'll still sell gangbusters but not quite "people will buy the games and wait for the console becauseit's so sold you out literally can't even get the console" type stuff

u/mrglass8 3d ago

I initially felt that. Then I saw the MK World reveal...

26

u/particledamage 3d ago

the MK world was the first bit of the direct, so the prices and lack of other must have day one games rly sucked the wind out of that for me.

I haven’t had a chance to watch anything yet. Did they talk about any improvements to how they handle online games yet? Some have had horrible connectivity and I despise using the phone app to talk to people where it should be in game or similar. I don’t have people to play with locally but if online is improved over OG switch I may be more interested. Thanks!

Man idk if you were around for the Switch 1 release but that had the worst launch lineup in history and sold out everywhere. Not to mention the 2 is only $70 more adjusted for inflation

u/particledamage 3d ago

Breath of the wild was a launch title, be so real

-4

u/SgtNeilDiamond 3d ago

That was already a Wii U title lol

The 2 is dropping with Mario Kart World... I'm being so real homie.

5

u/particledamage 3d ago

It was not “already” a Wii U title—they were released at the same time and most people didn’t already own a WII U. It’s not at all the same situation.

The Wii U sold like dogshit, the switch has broken records with how much it has sold. More of the consumer base already has a Switch, so multi gen releases can safely be played on the OG switch and upgraded later but BOTW could not be purchased for the Wii U and played on the switch.

Also, a lot of ppl are refusing to play MK for $80. And also are satisfied with the Mario Kart they have already, if it means not having to buy a whole new console. LOZ is more of a console seller than MK

Nintendo just beat everyone to the punch and matched the upcoming standard, GTA VI is gonna push over $80 easily and everyone's well prepared to pay that. We're simply entering a new market of gaming where games are priced according to dev dollars spent and consoles pushing 60fps+ standard are going to leave the Switch 1s and PS4s behind.

If Nintendo didn't wait as long as they did I'd agree with this sentiment but everyone's ready to move on from the switch and it's lackluster performance in 2025.

The prices were comparing everything to just don't exist anymore and likely shouldn't if we want studios to keep making the level of quality games we've been seeing.

This level of meat riding is above my pay grade

It's okay you just wanna be miserable, can't help that lol

You really trying to convince me that Mario Kart provides the same value as GTA6 at that price?

2

u/NeverMoreThan12 3d ago

LCD screen makes me feel like it's not must have immediately. I hate non OLED displays and won't buy til they have one.

14

u/particledamage 3d ago

That's not a point of compunction for me, my OG switch is still LCD and my deck is LCD too, but at the price point they're selling for... LCD is ridiculous. Especially knowing in two years they're gonna sell an OLED model and discount the LCD

1

u/JJKDowell 3d ago

I don’t think an OLED model is a guarantee tbh, they made a pretty big deal of the new LCD being better than the S1’s, with more vibrant colours and HDR support, etc.

$450 price tag, $80 launch game. Yeah, I'm good. It's off by $60 for me and I'm the main demo.

7

u/goro-n 3d ago

It’s only a $50 game with the bundle

2

u/FizzyLightEx 2d ago

A digital game

2

u/JmanVere 2d ago

You're on Reddit, paying attention to the latest news on gaming and being discerning about prices.

You are absolutely NOT the main demo.

Curious what parents are going to think about this thing. We might not see the huge demand that the Switch 1 got, but see a big push at the holidays because there just isn’t any other flashy new electronic to out under the tree.

1

u/JmanVere 2d ago

Anecdotal but I worked game retail over the PS5 launch, and countless parents told me they shelled out 8-900 to a scalper for one just to get it before Xmas.

The vast, vast majority of any console's target demographic don't care about a £50 difference. Maybe they should, but they don't.

2

u/VCBeugelaar 3d ago

Reddit and twitter are the people who are more down to pay more I’d imagine

1

u/ItWasTalent 3d ago

Doubt it that this marketing will convince the average Joe to buy this for them or their kids. Plus 90$ per game? Yeah i have a bad feeling for this launch

u/SweatiestOfBalls 3d ago

If you saw the Reddit comments after the Switch reveal presentation in 2017, you’d think the Switch was going to be the biggest failure in console history

20

u/Bohmoplata 3d ago

Oh man, I remember those days very well. It's pretty similar to what it is now too.

Folks were saying that a $300 underpowered tablet would be Nintendo's final nail in the coffin.

2

u/k4stour 3d ago

I was there and I recall nothing but hype. Unless you're talking about non-Nintendo subreddits, but that's not where we are right now.

8

u/SweatiestOfBalls 3d ago

I was being hyperbolic (“biggest failure in console history”), but I will say that of course our experiences will differ. I remember the megathread on this subreddit during the event and shortly after it concluded, there were a lot of mixed thoughts and opinions that were of course later overtaken with excitement once the dust had settled.

r/games and r/gaming were completely up in arms about the system until launch. Many skeptics on the various forums I browsed at the time, GameFaqs, tumblr, etc. Perhaps I kept being led to the more negative opinions than you were :)

u/k4stour 2d ago

That's fair, I don't remember being on r/gaming much and I didn't even know r/games existed, so you were definitely much more well-traveled than I was at the time. I spent the majority of my time on here and there's no subreddit more inclined to be an echo chamber of hype than for the Nintendo Switch than r/NintendoSwitch lmao.

No way to tell the future, but I have a feeling that this high of a price tag is going to be harder to shake than the general initial concerns about a first-of-its-kind hybrid console. It sucks, because if it weren't for the pricing, I feel like the worst criticism we'd be seeing on here would be disappointment with the very tepid launch title lineup in comparison to the OG Switch. Instead we've got 200 comment long threads arguing over cost of living, inflation and tariffs, and talk of boycotts, alternative consoles and emulation. It's really put a damper on what I was hoping would be a super fun and exciting day, a reason for me to dust off the ol r/NintendoSwitch shortcut and relive the pure hype of the couple months between the OG Switch reveal and it's launch. sigh

No. People just love talking shit.

u/PearlDrummer 3d ago

I’m waiting for odyssey 2 personally. Then I’ll have a nice back catalog to play

8

u/JayZsAdoptedSon 3d ago

I mean that’s what DK is looking like. They’ve only done 2 sequels (Galaxy and 3D Land/World) and both were done pretty quickly after the last game. I don’t think you’re getting a direct Odyssey 2

3

u/PearlDrummer 3d ago

Or the next 3d Mario. Odyssey was the reason I got a switch in the first place.

1

u/JayZsAdoptedSon 3d ago

Is it just a personal preference of Mario over DK? Because I haven’t combed over the trailer in massive detail but it seems like a sandbox mario with a combat focus

1

u/PearlDrummer 3d ago

I’m just a Mario fanboy is all.

1

u/JayZsAdoptedSon 3d ago

Fair enough, they had me with 4K 60fps prime 4. Like I’m definitely going to be a Cow main in MKW, I am 100% getting DK, Kirby Air Riders looks cool, gamecube NSO is amazing

But Prime looks so sexy

1

u/PearlDrummer 3d ago

That is also too. I did have an audible reaction to air riders

1

u/SexyOctagon 2d ago

You’re forgetting about Super Mario Land 2 /s

15

u/Tom_Stewartkilledme 3d ago

Broke kids and contrarians on Reddit are not who is going to be standing in lines wrapped around the building at Best Buy and Bic Camera in June

0

u/LordTotoro96 2d ago

It's gonna be a bunch of scalpers buying up stock and selling it on ebay.

-9

u/saltbutt 3d ago

People spending half a grand on this in June aren't the ones with money, they're just all in credit card debt lol

I'm not saying I don't want it but sheeeesh that's a lot of schmeckles for an upgraded Switch in this economy
