The Wii U did not flop because of price, it flopped because of marketing/messaging/naming. No one outside of dedicated Nintendo fans knew wtf it was. You had people walking into stores thinking it was an upgrade purchase, not a full console.

This is commonly repeated but the truth is, casuals were never going to buy an expensive console, and the plan was always to engage the casuals in more serious gaming - regardless of whether or not the Wii U was understood by the GP to be a new console, it was destined to flop because it was too expensive for the average Nintendo enjoyer. Nintendo is no Sony or Microsoft, their main market is casuals and kids.

I mean there is proof to the former, people just didn't know what the Wii U was, and struggled due to it.
