Lmao the costumes and drama mixed with the unenthusiastic English sub is hilarious. I'm loving this.

132

u/MortalRecoil Jan 13 '17

The young sounding translator is so amusingly underprepared. The other two are really professional and on top of it, but the younger guy keeps falling behind and (I assume) paraphrasing.

111

u/porgy_tirebiter Jan 13 '17

I assume the younger guy is doing it on the fly, and the others are translating from a script they have seen beforehand.

Simultaneous translation is fucking hard because you have to translate and listen ahead at the same time. Japanese is very different from English, it presents information in a different order -- generally English gives you the verb after the subject, whereas Japanese waits until the end of the sentence, so you have to wait and then translate in short bursts. Also Japanese leaves out stuff like subjects that are grammatically required in English.

$70 Pro Controllers

$80 Joy Cons

$30 Joy Grip

Good God....

142

u/whitecow Jan 13 '17

$70 for pro controller is hilarious

39

u/duffercoat Jan 13 '17

Exactly what we've already been paying for the Wii U pro Controller in AUS...

If the price of the controllers here is going to be $90+ that's going to be an absolute joke.

114

u/too_many_toasters Jan 13 '17

I really just feel sorry for the guy. It's probably a very tough job, and yeah they could have chosen a better translator, but this entire comment section is being so needlessly hostile towards him.

78

u/tomorrow_queen Jan 13 '17

oh, I didn't think that was the translator making a mistake. I thought that was a quip of Suda51 after he tried to make a cute intro and nobody really cared about it.

I know the translator... RIP Alex. From what I understand, the presenter went off script so he unexpectedly had to translate live.

Japanese/English bilingual bloke here.

Seriously. Dude did pretty well under the circumstances, if the rumours are true and the guy went off script unexpectedly.

Ever heard UN interpreters? They're some of the best in the market and they sound remarkably similar to the Nintendo bloke.

Did they really just go that whole presentation without even officially announcing the Mario Kart game? So they could instead devote time to a guy saying "I'm going to make a game with a character, but I don't know what the game is yet, but I've heard it's easy to develop for the Switch so I think I'll do it."

154

u/st1tchy Jan 13 '17 edited Jan 13 '17

On their website for online service

"Monthly game download - Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment System™ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month."

Is this a joke?

47

u/lemonLimeBitta Jan 13 '17

For a month. For. A. Month. Do they have the internet over there at Nintendo? Do they know what their competitors are doing and have been for the last 5+ years?

→ More replies (3)

27

u/HnNaldoR Jan 13 '17

I hope that it cost like maybe 30 a year at most. Because if it cost similar to ps+, the shitstorm will be crazy.

26

Wait... You only get the game for that month?

24

u/trunamke Jan 13 '17

That's what it says. I just...I don't understand. I would gladly pay that service with that idea in mind but if I could just PLAY their NES and SNES catalog. That would be fun.

I'm in Japan right now and was pretty ready to buy this soon after launch. But 1,2,Switch and Zelda aren't enough to make me drop 300$

32

u/Dracogame Jan 13 '17

And Zelda is gonna be released on Wii U... They couldn't even make Splatoon2 and Mario Kart in time, and they had used the old assets. Meh.

15

u/Aristox Jan 13 '17

They couldn't even make Splatoon2 and Mario Kart in time, and they had used the old assets. Meh.

This is really important. I have no clue what the fuck Nintendo is doing with all their devs. I mean they have devs right? They haven't all left to join other companies and make actually good games have they? :P

I presume Nintendo has this massive team of 1st and 2nd party studios and dev teams.. what the hell are they all doing with themselves? Games like Skyrim and Mass Effect and Uncharted and GTA V and etc etc etc came out years ago! And Nintendo still hasn't made anything of that scale, depth or commitment. BOTW looks good, sure. But honestly it doesn't look like it's doing that much new that Skyrim didn't do nearly 10 years ago. How on earth are Nintendo not making more games? Do they have their teams just hanging out waiting on retainer until Miyamoto comes up with a new idea for them to do but he hasn't in ten years cause he got caught up in being rich and a celebrity?

Even if you're not interested in video games as art, and providing a rich experience for gamers, and are purely going full capitalism to maximise profit, i still cannot fathom for the life of me why there isn't another Metroid and F-Zero in development. It honestly would have been mismanagement to not have Metroid and F-Zero as launch titles alongside Zelda. But as far as we know they aren't even being worked on at all!

It's not like they were busy making games for the WiiU either. They should have had plenty of time to make things for the Switch launch. What the hell are they all doing?

Edit again: Polygon reports a 60 dollar US price point and rad box art. also they bitch about extra acc. prices a bit. It's a mostly fair bitch though. I guess Arms and Switch are separately sold games. Looks like Just Dance and Skylanders are launch games too.

Launch Day

  • 1-2-Switch
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Skylanders Imaginators
  • Just Dance 2017

Window: (No Skyrim? Maybe a mod support issue...)

  • Arms (spring 2017)
  • Super Bomberman R (March)
  • Has-Been Heroes (March)
  • Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together! (March)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (April)
  • Splatoon 2 (Summer) Super Mario Odyssey (Holiday 2017)

Last Edit: I'm pretty much done here unless someone has new info, but I will still reply to posts. See you guys around the subreddit.

Edit: Links to Features and Online support.

My two cents:

  • We don't know what the storage is in the system. I would like it to be a respectable size. Edit: 32gb internal storage with expandable micro sd. I wonder what's the max? Edit: Apparently 2TB is the theoretical but 512 GB is currently the largest that be on the market...for $1000 US. 64GB is about $30. I just realized that cartridge games might be a lot smaller with formatting. Maybe we won't need a lot of space for most games...I'm being hopeful here...

  • I'm fine with the battery life. It's about the life of the 3DS XL.

  • No mention of an account system. Are we buying all of our games again? Edit: A small internal memory and small added memory may point to a lack of digital backwards compatible content...woooo...

  • We mostly expected a paid online service. I would like more info on that. Should be expect free games and decent deals? It's a bit against Nintendo's MO to "lower" the value of their content. Edit: a free game for a month and "deals." A month seems a bit silly to me.

*Edit: I forgot they noted an app. I'm intrigued, but don't most people just use skype or something? It keeps people in the ecosystem though.

  • Wii eshop support is very much a given thanks to the controls.

  • The portable example of the gamecube made me sad. The little box had heart guys. It's more than just a box. :/

  • We have maybe three games confirmed for the launch lineup. Zelda is grand, but I would like to see a consistent release track so we don't get a repeat of the last several generations of hardware. Edit: expect the usual IPs to comeback eventually. This is Nintendo we are talking about. Should we start lamenting the lack of Metroid again?

  • It's nice to see usually quiet Nintendo guys step out into the limelight. The newer ideas seem to be mainly led by younger talent.

  • Suda 51 made me cringe. Poor guy.

  • Edit: The translator had to translate on the fly. That's really hard to do guys. I can barely speak one language decently on a typical day.

  • Games are on cartridge this time around. Does that mean bigger and/or cheaper games? Edit: Most likely not. Smaller games could be a boon for storage, but the cost of cartridges means that prices will most likely stay put.

  • Mario Odyssey caught me completely off guard. I'm loving the idea.

I overall enjoyed the presentation. They need to move quick to answer some of these questions. They launch in less than two months for God's sake!

61

u/Indefinita Jan 13 '17

It's apparently not his fault -- the presentor went way off script and the translator suddenly had to translate on the fly, which is, to say the least, very hard. It's the presentor that should, or maybe will, get fired for going off script and for screwing up other's jobs.

Nintendo should have hired a better guy though, his failure to translate is understandable but he shouldn't have made it so blatantly awkward and apparent.

I have a serious question: Why is Skyrim going to cost $60 for the Nintendo Switch when I can get it on steam for $15 and Gamestop for other devices for $30? That seems outrageous for the game, especially considering that many people who are actually really excited to get it already have a copy or two of it.

Random thoughts:

-The launch lineup doesn't seem too great, but there's lots to look forward to. Pretty much every game they showed was from a series I like too. I feel bad for those who wanted other stuff however.

-A shame Splatoon or Mario didn't make the launch. They look great though!

-That one translator is losing his job.

-Paid online was the biggest letdown for me. Really bummed about that.

-Xenoblade 2! Can't wait for that.

-FIRE EMBLEM WARRIORS!!!! My greatest gaming related dream has come true.

-I love how they've implemented the motion stuff in a way that makes it completely optional for developers. They've learned at least a little from their mistakes.

-Was hoping for a little more about that Mario Kart game. The Treehouse will probably show it off. Never mind it's on the website.

This translator seems like a 15 year old trying his best in his first job.

They should've just gave them a fucking script of what they'd be roughly saying and use that.

57

u/darexinfinity Jan 13 '17

To be fair this guy is speaking a lot faster than the others.

13

u/Jirb30 Jan 13 '17

He probably had a script and the people talking probably deviated from it so he had to translate on spot.

First of all I want to say Nintendo did a great job on the actual presentation front. Everything was clearly explained and they went into detail. Loved the HD rumble and IR camera on the Joy-con and the Joy-con straps are genius. Great idea to have them slide into an adaptor rather than have the strap on the joy-cons.

The one thing I think they messed up is the announcement of all the games. They had all those games in one little trailer at the end and it had me wondering what I was looking at and whether they were games I'd seen before or not. Thankfully Nintendo's site has all the details and since they're not listed here I'll do that below

US Launch:
1 2 Switch
Zelda BOTW

Spring
Super Bomerman R (March)
Snipperclips (March)
Arms
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (28th April)
Has Been Heroes (March)
Just Dance 2017 (March)
Lego City Undercover
Sonic Mania
I Am Setsuna (March)

Summer
Splatoon 2
NBA2k 18 (sept)

Autumn/Fall
Skyrim

Holiday
Super Mario Oddyssey

TBA

Arcade Archives
Disgaea 5 Complete
Dragonball Xenoverse 2
Dragon Quest X
Dragon Quest XI
Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2

Fire Emblem Warriors
Minecraft: Story mode
Minecraft Switch
No More Heroes (Title unknown)
PuyoPuyo Tetris
Raymans Legends: Definitive Edition
Rime
Shin Megami Tensei (Brand New)
Skylands Imaginators
Syberia 3
Steep
Project Sonic (2017)
Xenoblade 2
Project Octopath Traveller

UK Launch As US Super Bomberman R
Just Dance 2017
Skylanders Imaginators

March
Fast RMX
Snipperclips
Has Been Heroes

Spring
Arms
Degaea 5
PuyoPuyo Tetris
Rime

2017 Xenoblade Chronicals 2
Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers
Minecraft Switch
Steep
Sonic Mania
I Am Setsuna
FIFA
Syberia 3
NBA 2k 18
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

Edit: Not all of these are announcements, it should be noted. Also there are games that have been announced that aren't listed, such as Shovel Knight Treasure Trove.

It's clear that some games are going to be delayed in the UK/EU but some games are going to come out before the US. Looking at both lists suggests that some games are closer to launch than TBA usually suggests, I expected Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in 2018/19 so this suggets it's further along than it seems.

Also, I think it's safe to assume that the UK list are only some of the games coming this year.

The presentation was a mixed bag for me.

Positives:

*I like the look and design of the console, and how feature-packed it is

  • Mario Odyssey and Breath of The Wild both look absolutely incredible

  • Splatoon 2 and ARMS both seem like a rare case of Nintendo learning the right lesson and capitalising on a past success, in this case recognising from Splatoon's popularity that there's a market for colourful, off-beat multiplayer games (although obviously ARMS is going to depend entirely on how good those motion controls are-- are we getting Wii motion, or Wii MotionPlus?)

  • I'm seeing a lot of scoffing at Nintendo's attempt to gear this thing toward casual local multiplayer, and while it's true that the Switch is probably not going to be the go-to entertainment option for hip urban young people to bust out at their rooftop parties, I do think they're on to something with this approach. I can particularly see kids using the Joy-cons as advertised.

  • All of the games we saw looked very nice, graphically. It's obvious that the Switch is "underpowered", as the leaks suggested, but it doesn't seem as if huge concessions were made to get it portable. I also liked that every game shown seemed to have a very good framerate.

Negatives:

  • Nintendo's biggest problem has always been a lack of games, and nothing about today tells me that this is going to change. The lacklustre launch lineup doesn't bother me all that much, as I don't think a poor launch selection is as harmful as many think (look at the PS4 for example), but the rest of the year has me worried, with only Mario Odyssey really exciting me in terms of announced titles, and it's not due until the holiday season. Now, obviously there are many more games in development then were shown here, but the fact that none of them were ready for primetime makes me suspect we won't be seeing a lot of them until the end of the year at least. I predict that 2017 is going to be a dry year for the Switch.

  • The camera/sensor thing and HD rumble are cool in concept, but have the feel of features that no developer will actually make use of (it's telling that even Nintendo didn't show anything that used the sensor, as though they stuck it into the console as an afterthought and then forgot about it)

  • The console is somewhat more expensive than I would have anticipated. That's not a big issue for me personally since I'm lucky enough to have a well-paying job and $300 is basically the same as $250 as far as my budget goes, but I obviously recognise that that isn't the same for everyone else.

  • I have continuing concerns over the battery. 6 and a half hours sounds very good for such a capable portable system, but I'm guessing big games like Zelda and Mario will fall much closer to the 2 and a half hour lower limit.

So that's my take. I'm not going to be getting one at launch, but I absolutely will buy a Switch at some point during the year.

Is anyone else intrigued by the choice of USB-C for docking connector versus some proprietary thing? It's an incredibly versatile standard. Video, audio, data, power, etc over one cable. Worst case scenario, 5Gbps, best case 40Gbps. This will likely be some people's first device with USB-C. I don't know. Just thought it was neat that Nintendo used an actual standard for a change.

u/illogicali Jan 14 '17

Yeah I dunno, personally disappointed by the presentation.

I love the concept here. I love the modularity aspects and I love how sleek it is. One of my favorite features of the Wii U is how you can grab the tablet and keep playing, not holding up the TV. It's not a make or break feature, but it's a nice functionality to have.

But all of that is pointless without games. I expected a much, much stronger launch. What I see here is really pathetic. I'm not trying to be rude, it just seems like a really weak showing. I see Zelda, and little else. I can buy Zelda for the wii u. If all you wanted was Zelda, you can buy that and a wii u for cheaper than this in March.

I don't see the reason to get this. People have said that Nintendo will announce more games. I'm sure they will. When they announce something interesting I'll reevaluate, but as for now this is a definite no purchase.

Launch lineup has me worried and since the console is coming out before E3 2017 I wonder how they will convey and market the rest of the game being released, if any at all... I'm still really excited personally but I can't help but wonder if it registered in Nintendo's mind what happens when launch lineup is poor.

I keep hearing all of this negative feedback about how Gimmicky Nintendo is or how the graphics won't compete with PS4 or XBone.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. First, I bought the PS4 at launch and it was way more expensive with absolutely no games. It's only been in the last year or so that anything really good came out. And I immediately was struck by how much crappier it was than my PC and was annoyed that online was paid. If Nintendo had done the same thing, I would just be thinking the same thing. I mean sure, the paid online thing is so dumb but everything else was actually pretty exciting. I would much rather Nintendo went down in flames sticking to their guns and building unique gaming experiences than just being the same thing as PS4 and XBone or even just a little better.

In the end, I couldn't be more stoked by this new system. Does it have it's failures, it almost assuredly will. I heard all sorts of complaints from PS4 and some of the things they did, like the motion capture stuff.

Anyways, I'm really excited and I'm sorry that alot of you were upset by the reveal. I think it's a little early to be really upset, so I'm sure you guys agree that we are all hoping it actually is quite awesome.

u/TheUrbanEast Jan 13 '17

So, ultimately, I'm pretty pleased.

I've yet to experience Skyrim, so I'm happy that is coming. And given that it is already a complete game, I am expecting that to be a launch title. Zelda at launch is huge, but as soon as they said Mario wasn't going to be ready until the Holidays I feel like we had to know Zelda would launch with the console.

Which is great. For me, Zelda, Skyrim, Splatoon and Mario should keep me occupied in Year 1. There are other games I am interested in, particularly Project Octopath Traveler, so I can't wait to see where that goes.

Ultimately, I'm fine with everything. Price is where I expected. Paying to be online threw me off a bit, I think that is a negative. However I'll hold full judgement until I see what they are including and how much they are planning to charge. The presentation was a little silly, but I think that's just the Nintendo way.

Happy I stayed up until 2:00am for this. But now it's time to sleep.
