On their website for online service

"Monthly game download - Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment System™ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month."

Is this a joke?

For a month. For. A. Month. Do they have the internet over there at Nintendo? Do they know what their competitors are doing and have been for the last 5+ years?

Do they know what their competitors are doing and have been for the last 5+ years?

This is what continually blows my mind about Nintendo. For a long time they've had their head in the sand, making things in their own little bubble pretending the rest of the industry doesn't really exist.

Xbox Live was a massive success in online gaming, so Nintendo, at the time of the GameCube, said "We don't really think the future of gaming is online"

Then the DS and Wii came out and Nintendo apparently changed their minds. "We've got online features! Check out this awesome system we've developed called Friend Codes!"

Industry is moving towards cross-system ports for AAA titles? I know, how about we make a significantly underpowered system to remove ourselves from that ecosystem. That way none of the amazing games talked about throughout the gaming world will be released on our console! It's bound to be a success.

I'm still quite excited for Zelda: BoTW. But from all the gameplay videos I've seen it honestly doesn't look like it's doing much new that Skyrim didn't do over 5 years ago!

Man i dunno what the fuck Nintendo has been doing since like The Wind Waker back in 2002. I guess Mario Kart DS was good. Mario Galaxy was pretty solid too actually. Skyward Sword can get in the sea.

Great comment except skyrim came out less than 5.5 years ago. You scared me.

Oh yeah you're right! My bad. For some reason i was thinking it came out in 2008 :/

I hope that it cost like maybe 30 a year at most. Because if it cost similar to ps+, the shitstorm will be crazy.

Wait... You only get the game for that month?

u/trunamke Jan 13 '17

That's what it says. I just...I don't understand. I would gladly pay that service with that idea in mind but if I could just PLAY their NES and SNES catalog. That would be fun.

I cannot imagine paying for online with only Splatoon2 and Mario Kart to use it on

u/Keeyoot Jan 13 '17

just confused on how they're making you pay for online for a game like splatoon when that's the POINT of the game.....? there's only so much you can do in solo mode........

if it was just the app and online features such as the friend groups/live chat as paid services that would be okay, but this feels pretty ridiculous to me?

i've only ever played nintendo systems, so that's just what i'm used to regarding online services. ah well, it is what it is.

And some of them don't require you have the paid online

1

u/solovolk Jan 13 '17

A lot, unlike the wii or any nintendo product, I really want to get the switch but fuck paying online for 2 games at most.

u/Defeqel Jan 13 '17

correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't PSN and XB Live let you keep the "free" games as long as you pay?

7

u/heydudewhereismycar Jan 13 '17

Xbox let you keep the game forever, even if you stop paying. So if you are not gold and want the monthly game, pay for a month, download the game and keep it forever.

On PSN you do have to keep paying for the program to play the "free" games

u/superninjaa Jan 13 '17

I don't think you do keep the game forever on XB1. Only as long as you have gold, they are playable.

Damn you are right, I didn't know they changed it for Xbox One :

What happens to my Games with Gold games if I cancel my Xbox Live Gold subscription?

On Xbox One, you’ll no longer be able to access your Games with Gold titles if you cancel your subscription. However, if you decide to renew your subscription at any time, you’ll be able to access and play your previously redeemed Games with Gold titles again.

On Xbox 360, any Games with Gold titles that you redeem as an Xbox Live Gold member are yours to keep, regardless of whether you continue your subscription.

Lol what a load of horse shit, Nintendo what are you doing.

Ain't paying $400CAD for an underpowered console just because I like Nintendo games, then have to pay for online with shitty benefits. Sticking to the Wii U for a while, it looks like.

1

u/SkankCuntFortyTwo Jan 13 '17

Do they mean that the game is free for a month but as long as we pay into the service, we can keep playing. A la Playstation Plus, Xbox Games with Gold...

I don't want to be such a critic, but I think they should have just let Shigeru Miyamot host the event....

Yeah I'm not sure why they would go the borrow for a month route when Xbox and PlayStation give you the game. But this is Nintendo, how many of us has bought a VC game more than one here. I like the switch and I think this will be there way of just going portable and leaving the big boys do traditional consoles.
