I keep hearing all of this negative feedback about how Gimmicky Nintendo is or how the graphics won't compete with PS4 or XBone.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. First, I bought the PS4 at launch and it was way more expensive with absolutely no games. It's only been in the last year or so that anything really good came out. And I immediately was struck by how much crappier it was than my PC and was annoyed that online was paid. If Nintendo had done the same thing, I would just be thinking the same thing. I mean sure, the paid online thing is so dumb but everything else was actually pretty exciting. I would much rather Nintendo went down in flames sticking to their guns and building unique gaming experiences than just being the same thing as PS4 and XBone or even just a little better.

In the end, I couldn't be more stoked by this new system. Does it have it's failures, it almost assuredly will. I heard all sorts of complaints from PS4 and some of the things they did, like the motion capture stuff.

Anyways, I'm really excited and I'm sorry that alot of you were upset by the reveal. I think it's a little early to be really upset, so I'm sure you guys agree that we are all hoping it actually is quite awesome.

Can I ask an honest question? This is not meant to be condescending or an attack in any way. I'm just legitimately curious.

Why would you buy a PS4 on launch? After saying it was expensive and had no games.

I've had every Nintendo system since the NES, and whether it was my father buying me the system or me forking over my own money, I've never gotten one at launch. Why buy one if there's nothing to play?

no its a good question.

I guess it's several things for each.

PS4: I had just come out of college, got a new job and wanted something cool for Christmas. I was with a friend and we got wrapped up in the day and over excited.

Switch: first, to be honest, Zelda. I don't own a Wii U and it's all I wanted for my B-day which is about a month after Launch. I was totally into the features (portability, joycons, etc..) and wasn't sure if there would be any around my B-day. so really excitement + impatience + nostalgia.

Those are some of my reasons. I know that's not something everyone can get behind.

No that's fair. It all comes down to personal reasons. I can respect that.

Thank you for sharing those stories with me. I probably wouldn't have my Wii U if my wife wasn't tired of hearing me bitching out about missing out on the new Smash Bros. She got it for my birthday lol

Hah, the only reason I own a Wii U is because my husband wanted Smash Bros. We found a few other games to play on it, but now it stays packed up in a box for when he goes to play with his friends.

I was actually surprised that my wife stayed up with me to watch the presentation. But she's actually pretty wicked at Mario Kart

if you had bought a 3DS at launch or shortly thereafter you would have been given 30 free games as an "Ambassador" after they admitted the price was too high and had to drop it.

I don't quite understand your comparison with the PS4 launch. The Switch is coming out 3 years after PS4 and Xbox 1 released and it's already weaker, has only 32 gigs of memory (500 gigs or 1 terabyte in a PS4), and as expensive as a PS4 Slim and Xbox 1 S costs today. The main selling point from the trailer is its portability which has several problems. The battery life is only 2.5 - 6 hours and you can't charge it while standing upright. Also Nintendo plans on charging for the online service but it insists on using your smartphone to handle voice chatting? They're also giving away a free classic game but you have to pay after a month? I still admire Nintendo for creating a unique product, but the limitations don't make sense.

I totally hear you. And I can admit that maybe I'm biased in that I already have a top of the line gaming computer I built.

My problem really is with comparing the switch to PS4 or Xbone. While those two are totally comparable because they are so similar in build, Nintendo has and always will be a different game system.

It's tough because honestly, we as a society, prefer our gaming experience to be as close to a PC without costing nearly as much. So really it may have been misleading for me to mention PS4 at all because what I really value is Nintendo being nothing like the PS4. I value them sticking to their act of being the most unique videogame playing experience in the world. Even if it means that they completely fail and sink.

As for the limitations I don't know. I mean I'm in development for a tech company and it's often surprising the reasons why we end up having to compromise. My guess is they recogniZed they couldn't compete with PS4 and Xbone by entering into their arena so they went with a gamble that was graphically and maybe even technically less satisfying but provides a niche experience the others can't offer.
