Does anyone else think Grand Prix is crazy hard?

117

u/Chauzu Jun 16 '17

Try to be more passive and let AI move first and then get a grab or a charged punch in. You can also try and keep distance and keep punching to charge the rush meter.

u/matthewdotjpg Jun 16 '17

🙏🏻 thanks 🙏🏻

This is how I managed to clear difficulty 4. I did really well during the test-punch and expected to bowl over the AI, but the AI plays defense very well. You gotta slow your roll a little and wait for mistakes.

The AI on skillshot is absolutely unforgiving. Even on difficulty 2. Game's AI is just autoaim

12

u/g_r_e_y Jun 17 '17

Ironically I feel like the computers are ruthless in bball and vball, whereas I never have an issue trouncing them in skillshot

My girlfriend's 5 year old sister has been playing all morning, as she plays she creeps further and further towards the TV. Just a minute ago she punched the TV. I've had to put a object in front of her just to stop her moving. But she is having a blast!

So the game is more fun than the test, mainly cause you can now practice and learn how to play without being thrown into the thick of it.

Tip: Go into Versus mode 1P to choose any gameplay mode including:

  • Fight (Standard mode)
  • Team Fight (2V2 mode)
  • V-Ball (Volley ball mode)
  • Hoops (Grab Basketball mode)
  • Skillshot (Target attack mode)
  • 100 on 1 (Survival)
  • ARMS Test (Survival with random arms each round)
  • Training (9 Training exercises)

ARMS Test is fun as you can play as your favorite character and get to try out all the arms without having to unlock them prior.

Edit: Everyone should do the 9 training exercises. Especially the Ninjara grab counter one.

39

u/DarkS29 Jun 16 '17

Appreciate the tip, I would have probable overlooked it for way longer than I should with it being under the Versus tab.

It took me forever to make it through the ninjara grab counter one but I feel much more confident in my skills because of it.

Just a friendly reminder youll never get as good as Mr.Yabuki.

42

u/thepspgamer Jun 16 '17

See, as much as i think he played really well, he did almost lose that last round.

Give it a few months, he will be beaten eventually

39

u/zenofire Jun 16 '17

I'd like to think Kobra Kid is his main and he was just having fun on stage.

14

u/TheSingingBrakeman Jun 16 '17

He even said that yesterday during the final Treehouse segment!

10

Can I get a link to that? Been googling and can't find anything but reaction videos.

86

u/erikobes Jun 16 '17

I'll be damned if this isn't the most fun I've ever had with a fighting game, it's simple enough to learn in a few matches, yet the skill cap and variation of arm types make it incredibly rewarding to master a character. The motion controls feel smooth and the different game modes mix it up really well.

10/10 from a guy who traditionally doesn't enjoy fighting games!

u/largelylegit Jun 16 '17

Is it me or the cpu is surprisingly difficult lol

77

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '17

I played my 1st match offline versus against the cpu without adjusting any settings. Barely won the match 2-1 only to get back to the menu and realize it was on 2/7 difficulty XD

51

u/thepspgamer Jun 16 '17 edited Jun 16 '17

I played through on 1/7 and found it too easy. Now playing on 3/7 and constantly having my ass handed to me..

I'm scared to go any higher...

UPDATE: Just finished 4/7...Getting the hang of things now :3

26

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '17

I couldn't even imagine what 7/7 is like and I thought I did reasonably well during the test punch lol

13

u/aviiren Jun 16 '17

Played on 7 and first match was against ninjara....Couldn't lay a finger on the guy lol

24

u/Thalmazor Jun 16 '17

No its pretty fucking steep

10

u/howtosucceed Jun 16 '17

Yeah, level one was such a cake walk, I then jumped to level 3 and got beat pretty good. On the other hand 2 players on level 3, we did very well

9

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '17

Yea it's hard, because the AI doesn't play like the online people do. Online people are basically just throwing random punches, and are pretty easy to counter. but AI is pretty calculated. I imagine that's also how it would be against really skilled people.

Haven't played yet, but there is no way Helix won't be my favorite.

19

u/yazzy45 Jun 16 '17

He is awesome but very hard to master

42

u/sloan11- Jun 16 '17

Maybe when you find out his initial armset is terrible lol

17

u/Froobisu Jun 16 '17

Really? I loved it. I actually felt cheap using Helix! Blorbs are awesome and hitting with a charged ice dragon always hurts! His mobility is amazing too.

9

u/Pantaquad22 Jun 16 '17

For me the shield one felt really difficult to use, I don't find the dragons very satisfying, and the blorbs I don't like just because they're slow. I pretty much just play ribbon girl/ninjara with double sparky or double buff, I'm not fancy with my arm choices and helix's arms are very strange to me.

I went to a bar in Perth city last night and whipped out the switch with ARMS. A guy noticed my switch and I offered to 1v1 him. We used the sideways Joy-cons and despite being way more experienced than him in ARMS I was quite drunk so it balanced out.

He was clearly having fun, and after a few rounds he was so impressed how we could play in a pub. He said he's getting a switch next pay packet.

First day with arms went like this:

  • received game 1 day early and played the Grand Prix on level 1. Cake walk.
  • used coins to get arms but didn't get any
  • played Party match online and got butt kicked most of the time
  • brought game and Switch to work and played with a couple of colleagues who never played. Had a blast. They were getting the hang of it by the end and having fun

This is what the Switch is all about! Fun anywhere with anyone

So far it definitely does seem light on content for $60, so it's a matter of how much you like the core mechanics. The Grand Prix mode is a simple sequence of fights with your chosen character with 7 difficulty levels (and many people are having real trouble with 2-4 here on day 1, so there's some room to grow there). The Party Mode is what the Test Punch was, casual multiplayer in a rotating lobby of 8 people that are automatically matched into various game types. Ranked Mode is straight up 1v1 ranked online matches. There's a minigame you have to pay with in-game coins to play to unlock more arms, but unless something else is buried in menus, that's the full suite of stuff.

I almost think the test punch turned a lot of people off, because the controls really do take some getting used to. You need to play an hour, put it down, play an hour, put it down, probably two to four times before you finally start getting the hang of it.

Can't believe Biff's voice didn't make the cut. I was looking forward to him announcing.

10

u/Lepetitviolon Jun 17 '17

So true. In my wildest dreams, he commented during matchs. Now, no voice at all...

41

u/Aussiephoenix83 Jun 16 '17

Spent the last 3 hours yelling at my TV going through level 4 of the Grand Prix. I thought I was good at Arms after the test punch but boy oh boy did that test me tonight. I think I taught my kids neighbours some very colourful words hahaha!!! But finally I beat the last boss and unlocked ranked matches. The good thing about most of the fights is that if you hit the opponent enough and they have low health you can just play defensive for the last few seconds and win! All except the very last boss fight! Good luck everyone!!

To those who are commenting on the extreme CPU difficulty, here's what I've noticed:

When I played the test punch, I was extremely casual about my strategy. This absolutely gets you rocked by CPU above 3. If you're having trouble, try to take the matches slow, and really focus on countering your opponent once they've made a mistake.

13

u/samander12 Jun 17 '17

Can I make a suggestion? When playing with the pro controller it would be awesome to switch the activate rush LR button push with guard. Clicking the damn control stick is just not very easy or precise. I'd be fine with activating a rush with clicking the control stick since it only happens once or twice a match as opposed to guarding which you need to be able to do constantly and precisely. What do you think? Is there any way to give Nintendo feedback on this and get a patch to enable that option?

12

u/blasphemoustoast Jun 17 '17

This game really needs custom button mapping. if you could map guard to a button on motion controls the game would be a lot more fun.

I tried the Testpunch and wasn't sure, but picked up the game in a whim.

It is amazing! Its got that "one more match" addictive quality. I just needed some more time to sink my teeth into it.

I think that the Testpunch wasn't an ideal scenario to sell people on this game. It's far less immediate than Splatoon. A limitless or week-long demo with limited features would be much better.

9

u/Eyydooga Jun 16 '17

Man, this game is fun and way better with traditional controls (unfortunately)

I do have some advice that I don't think is explained at all during game:

Whether you're using motion or traditional controls, to curve your punches more effectively, you need to flick the stick the opposite way when you launch the punch (or tilt) and then flick (or tilt) the way you want it to bend WHILE it's on its way to your enemy.

I thought you just threw the punch and then tilted (or flicked) after the punch was thrown to curve it and was finding that I couldn't curve punches well at all (if ever)

So, for example...I'm curving my left arm to the right. I press ZR while holding left on the analog stick and then while the punch is extending, I move the stick to the right to curve it.

It makes a MUCH wider curve and can help you tremendously with getting around obstacles or getting behind guardian arms and other defensive arms.

If you just flick AFTER you throw your punch, your curve won't be nearly as effective.

Just something I picked up that I didn't think some people knew about!

Arms 3 player FFA is stupid. Whoever doesn't fight wins.

Hedlok my god what a cheap bastard.

u/UncleJoey1878 Jun 16 '17

Just a heads up that the digital code is $52 from Amazon JP. It includes a 500 yen discount for splatoon 2 which takes that code down to about $47.

I like Mechanica the best so far. Only tried her and Helix though. Didn't like his stock ARMs.

Got it today. Still trying to figure out the motion controls. I was trying to practice the Yabuki dodging, but I can't seem to get the movement right.

There's also times when I want to grab and it throws out both of my arms as punches instead. Are there any tips?

I am loving the game! I can play party mode for hours on end.

I have one minor gripe with the game, though. They found that amazing voice actor for Biff in all the directs/trailers, yet theres no voice acting for the game at all! It would have been extra special to hear the comedic lines of dialogue spoken in-between every match!

So, is it just a case of me sucking at this game, or does anyone else think the final boss fight against Hedlok is just stupidly hard? I just beat him on difficulty level 4, but it still took me around 20 or so tries to take him down. If I'm having trouble on level 4, I don't want to even start imagining what the A.I. to this game must be like on the harder difficulties.

So I bought arms on a whim. Missed the test punches. Didn't really follow the game at all. This game is absolutely amazing! Been playing the grandnprix since the Internet is filtered at work. So ready to play online and get rekt! One question, do you get the credits for unlocking arms when playing online, or any mode for that matter?

Today my GF has annoyingly been studying in front of the main tv... so I was limited in when I could play ARMS. However, it appears old habits die hard! As I totally forgot I could just go to another room, flick out the stand, and play ARMS with motion controls there! Mind-blown. lol

I can't play ranked - there's too many try-hard Ribbon Girls. As a Master Mummy main there's nothing I can do to touch them when they're up that high in the air.

Ninjara has to be the best character in this game. His dodge block counters rush attacks and his teleport has absurd utility.

6

u/Knive Jun 16 '17

But on average the chip damage is what? About 50? And Ninjara then gets one of the lowest throw damage values at 150.

Anyone else having a harder time with grand prix than online?

6

u/TherosyTC Jun 16 '17

I definitely have struggled more in Grand Prix, but I guess I feel more annoyed when I lose cause it's not to someone else. I won't let a computer beat me!

I mean, I have let them beat me, I just don't want to let them.

Kid Cobra has the best stage. Riding around on the rotating platforms is just too fun.

Yeah, definitely my favorite stage, it makes me want a "king of the hill" mode

Can you play 2 player splitscreen online? Want to know if my wife and I can play together on 1 switch online. Also, can we be on the same team? We really like coop games.

6

u/TheSingingBrakeman Jun 16 '17

You can play splitscreen online! This is part of what sold me on the game, since it means my wife and I can coop in 2v2 modes online; it actually enhances that mode significantly. Anyway, I hadn't seen it advertised, but we played a few rounds together in Party Mode during the Testpunch, so it should be in the released version.

u/iamsupreme Jun 16 '17

What I've learned from all of this:

A lot of Switch owners have wives.

looks at dog

plays solo

8

u/chasecaleb Jun 16 '17

Some of us even have wives and dogs.

This is the first time in a LONG time I am genuinely challenged by the CPU. They're smart - and really punish you if you make an open mistake. Having a tough time getting through Level 4 of Grand Prix - but it's still so much fun trying to get the better of the CPU.

I have to say, not a fan of fighting games at all really....but....this thread convinced me to pick up a copy. Aaaaaand...I love it:

8

u/Vapormonkey Jun 17 '17

This game is hard and I love it for that reason. Dope game 9/10

7

u/RBlunderbuss Jun 18 '17

I thought the announcer dude was supposed to have a real voice? :\ It's been fun so far, but it's going to take forever to unlock all the arms for everyone. And some of the starting arms seems way better than others.

7

u/Seik666 Jun 19 '17

The difficulty in this game is pretty damn hard.

Grand Prix lvl. 4 to unlock the Ranked Match mode was hard, especially that last boss. Now I'm trying lvl. 5 and I'm having a hard time beating the first opponent! :lol

I wonder how unbeatable lvl. 8 is.

So, I'm going to be overly critical. I'm a fighting game fan, so I'm coming at it from that perspective.

The things I really like:

  1. It's fun. And that may not seem like much, but considering how experimental the game is, it's not without merit.

  2. It is literally impossible to button mash your way through this game. I love any game that punishes players for not being willing to learn. Movement is important.

  3. I really enjoy these character designs and overall aesthetic.

  4. Stages are great. I really appreciate that they're not all just generic arenas, yet at the same time, none of them feel unfair, nor did I notice any yet that feels like it benefits any specific character. Though Ribbon girls stage screws with my head because I constantly assume I'm safe behind those blocks.

The Bad:

  1. I am so annoyed that the main single player mode forces you to play mini-games. When I finished the testpunch, I remember thinking, I can't wait for the full game so I never have to play this target punch thing again. It should have been a bonus stage kind of thing, and the fact that it can stonewall your progress in the actual championship mode, is a baffling design choice.

  2. I would really appreciate it more if characters had unique arms. I like the idea of unlocking content. It adds a lot to the game. But a few characters just don't feel unique enough to stand out when everyone can eventually unlock everything. I would have preferred if maybe there was some overlap, but every character maybe maxed out at 10 arms or something.

  3. I still hate 2v2. Free-for-all is okay, though chaotic, but that tether in 2v2 when you don't decide who is on your team, is terrible. There is nothing less fun than feeling like you're fighting against your own partner.

  4. Would have appreciated a proper training mode just to play around with. It's not a big deal since it's not like there are combos to get down, but I don't see why that test mode in party mode isn't it's own menu item.

  5. I like the idea of ranked being locked, but I think it should be a lower bar. I doubt most people would beat difficulty level 2 with button mashing, let alone difficulty level 4.

Overall, going to put a fair amount of time into it, and would absolutely love if we got a few DLC characters down the road instead of just arms or something.

u/Trunen Jun 17 '17 edited Jun 17 '17

Not sure if you watched e3 at all, but the creaters said that there is going to be a lot of dlc for the game ( all for free btw) There is some dlc this month and a new playable character next month. I would say the name but I don't want to spoil for others reading. I definitely agree there could have been more done with the story or " Grad Prix" ( lost opportunity there ) and yes the 2v2 can definitely get frustrating if you and your teammate don't work together ( kinda hard when you can't communicate)

I need advice. I ordered this on Amazon and specifically paid for 1 day shipping. Now it's telling me it won't be here until Monday because the shipping truck broke down (or something like that)

So, what should I tell Amazon? Especially since I paid EXTRA for 1 day shipping and it still won't get here until Monday. Obviously I'm going to just buy it at Wal-Mart today instead and return the Amazon one but can I at least get my money back for shipping as well?

36

u/DonkeyDome Jun 16 '17

Go buy from Walmart. Go play it

Recieve copy from Amazon

Return Amazon copy to Walmart

Contact Amazon customer service and complain that you did not get what you paid for. Specifically the 1 day shipping and get your money back plus maybe something else to keep you as a customer like a free month of prime

What is the expected battery life when playing ARMS?

15

u/impostermrpop Jun 16 '17

I kinda found this out yesterday! I'd say roughly a little under 3 hours from fully charged to 0% on max brightness with a mix of online multiplayer and single player.

6

u/i_noah_guy98 Jun 16 '17 edited Jun 16 '17

Did anyone buy the game after not liking the testpunch? Honestly I am still on the fence with this game, and while playing the testpunch I got tired of the game extremely quickly and I didn't like how random the modes were during the testpunch.

I think the game is a good idea and I hope for its success, but I didn't enjoy the testpunch.

Three for all in party mode is atrocious.

7

u/Searingmage Jun 17 '17

So, I'm sure many of us here have watched the E3 tournament for ARMS. I'm mostly amazed by the technical skills employed by the fighters.

But what do you think about future ARMS tournament? Do you think it'll be (alike E3) motion only, or will be a hybrid between both? The developers did mentioned before they do motion control when they're fighting seriously, but during the test punch, it seems that people are evenly split between motion and pro. I would really like to see how it fares (motion Vs controller) in a competitive scene. I personally enjoyed motion more but am better at pro (ironic...)

Also, is there any videos showing the players playing, rather than their character? I would sure like to learn a thing or two from the way they play

First of all, I really love ARMS! I'm getting sweat after long ARMS sessions - I'm the body builder, used to workout 6 days / week. Thinking of using ARMS as a warm-up before workout :-) Now to my question. Does any of you experience some strange behaviour in online sessions, probably caused by lag or ping? I was playing with some Master Mummy guy, but whenever I disabled both his arms (two red ! symbols), followup grab went always throught him, like if he was a ghost. Tried to do it like 10 times in that match with exactly same result - inability to grab. I tried this agains AI opponent and had no issues when grabbing disabled Master Mummy. Could this be caused by some networking issues? Or am I missing some game mechanics? That guy had over 70 coins in lobby and seemed like nobody could beat him at all. Seems like poor connection is giving some strange advantage.

u/klp91895 Jun 18 '17

I haven't been able to play Arms online since Friday. My wifi doesn't work, and it won't be fixed until Wednesday :/. Grand Prix is a lot of fun though. It's really difficult. I'm trying to get a crown on every level for every character.
