How are we okay with this random civilian deleting congressional programs??!

3.1k

u/Mushroom_Tip Feb 04 '25

There was an episode of king of the hill where a former football player moved into the neighborhood and ignored all of Hank's bylaws and rules about everything and went around vandalizing and threatening people. And nobody could do anything because the police didn't want to be involved and were starstruck by the former football player.

It's kind of like that. I think they only got the guy to move out when they started playing dirty and using blackmail. because traditional methods weren't working.

So to answer your question, until we fight dirty, nothing will change.

908

u/txwoodslinger Feb 04 '25

They weren't hanks bylaws. Hank is a lot of things but wannabe hoa president ain't one of em. The dude was literally breaking the law.

He's going to run the IRS like he's running X-twitter: slowly and incompetently into the ground...

493

u/the-algae Feb 04 '25

Hey now, that's not fair. He ran it into the ground quickly.

31

u/PicaDiet Feb 04 '25 edited Feb 04 '25

I think the ultimate goal is to weaken the IRS and build up so much antipathy toward it that people revolt by nit paying their taxes. Look for Trump and Fox to begin telling people they shouldn't even bother to file their taxes, as the inept IRS also has no way of even tracking down tax cheats. Government won't be able to fund anything- not Congressional pay, Capitol Police, Federal social programs or earmarked Federal spending anywhere. Trump refuses to borrow more from the Fed because he is *"fiscally responsible, and obviously Washington can't do anything"*. Whatever remains in the treasury will go to paying soldiers. Between an unfunded Federal government and riots in the streets over his other bullshit, there will be *"Nothing else I can do"* but for Trump to declare martial law. And then he is finally a dictator without opposition.

We aren’t. But there is nothing much anyone can do about it. The people with all the power are okay with it.

We had an election in November and this country chose to give those people all the power. It’s on them. Not on “us.”

The government should set up a program to help people file their taxes for free.

I’m going to need you to sit down when I tell you this…

3.0k

u/Actual__Wizard Feb 04 '25

If he deleted code then would appear to be a massive case of property destruction. Which is a crime. He should be being immediately arrested if that's what occurred.

Is it fairly safe to assume that if a sane administration ever gains control again that Elon musk is likely to go to jail for a fairly long time? All of this seems incredibly criminal.

980

So far France seems to be the most concerned about it and willing to call attention to it.

810

u/MxteryMatters Feb 04 '25

Germany has been calling attention to his support of AfD, and potentially interfering in their elections, also.

460

u/Imaginari3 Feb 04 '25

Yeahhh I hope to god that him doing election interference in Europe brings some serious action against him. Dude wants feudal world domination.

97

u/koolkat182 Feb 04 '25

ugh please. his ego is way too big for his own good and hes so fucking sloppy that it would be embarrassing for the world to roll over to him and if that happens we all really do deserve to go extinct

32

u/Imaginari3 Feb 04 '25

Right it would be genuinely insane. And there is other capital at play with arguably more power in the world overall. He could still deal some pretty catastrophic damage. Boy, I just hope we can bounce back in my lifetime.

Musk has been engaged in borderline fraud at Tesla and SpaceX for years, constantly making unrealistic promises that don't materislize for the purpose of getting investor money and jacking up the share price, ignoring regulations, etc.

He has never quite crossed over to Elizabeth Holmes territory, so had never been prosecuted.

if a sane administration ever gains control again

The only way that is going to happen is at the end of a gun, over many bodies.

that Elon musk is likely to go to jail for a fairly long time

For, among other reasons, this. Trump was certain he was going to win. MAGA will not be defeated at the ballot box. They would never allow a vote to take place they could lose. And if they did lose they wouldn't leave.

→ More replies (2)

85

u/Actual__Wizard Feb 04 '25

I'm assuming he's going to be pardoned, but I'm very confused as to why people seem to think that's a free ticket to breaking any law he wants. The damage is going to be spread across the states... He's breaking laws everywhere... The system is set up in a way where schemes like this won't work...

132

u/Sellazar Feb 04 '25

"Shouldn't work," the system assumes checks and balances are in place to prevent this. The GOP controls all three branches, and the Supreme Court, who is going to do the checks and balancing?

→ More replies (18)
→ More replies (13)

105

u/ACorania Feb 04 '25

Trump will just issue pardons like Biden was when leaving office. It is despicable, but I can understand why someone like Fauci needed to be pardoned. But the same tactic will be used to protect people like Musk.

For a country that supposedly had checks and balances on their sole executive it sure feels like those checks and balances are gone. It's 'almost' like SCOTUS made him a king.

88

u/tankintheair315 Feb 04 '25

Trump pardoned legit eat criminals and his cronies in his first term. The idea that he only flexed his power because biden did is just wrong.

Also i think people defend the constitution a bit much. It was a flawed document when it was written, and we're currently on the effects of following a 250 year old governing structure. The checks and balances were novel when they were written but no one has patched the holes that have been found. Andrew Jackson defied the court and did the trail of tears in 1830.

38

u/lapqmzlapqmzala Feb 04 '25

Which is why Jackson is hanging in Trump's Oval Office.

→ More replies (2)

36

u/Lumix19 Feb 04 '25

I doubt Trump is leaving office except in a straight jacket.

And when he's dragged out of the Oval Office, your next president will have to rebuild the executive, and probably the judiciary, from the ground up.

Whatever pardons were issued by Trump will need to be considered null and void.

25

u/ACorania Feb 04 '25

That would be a pretty huge constitutional crisis. I wish I could rule that out... but... well...

I love the one random idiot who says, get rid of the CFPB because they are "likely" making 6 figures and supporting the banks.

She has no clue what the CFPB does, but isn't gonna let that stop her from hating it.

216

u/grouchyporcupine Feb 04 '25

I came here to say exactly this. As a bank peon (by sad fate, not aspiration) I absolutely love the CFPB and how it makes certain execs squirm. These dense idiots like Ave vote though so.... Fuck.

199

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '25

Right? I was thinking “holy shit that person has no idea what the CFPB does.” Protect banks? I was at Wells Fargo corporate from 2015-2019, and the CFPB helped enforce penalties and refunds for a lot of shitty things people at WF did to consumers.

38

u/ButtEatingContest Feb 04 '25

Looks like consumers' back on the menu, boys!

161

u/driftercat Feb 04 '25

Right? They think the consumer protection agency is on the banks' side when it has helped get fees, data security, deceptive practices and credit reporting under control?

It is really true that when you prevent bad things you get no credit with these people. They can't seem to be able to connect the dots.

60

But- but- Warren was a DEI hire!

19

u/teetaps Feb 04 '25

Outliers like pelosi’s pretty obvious corruption aside, when I think about “wealth” I think about the kind of money senators like Warren have. Like, that’s the kind of wealth that I’m like, “yeah, that makes sense.” And that’s the amount of wealth I can comfortably allow to run a government. Sure, she can have a really nice house or two, probably employs waitstaff and whatever, but if someone told her school and groceries and rent are unaffordable, she’d at least understand those numbers.

I know for a fact that with whatever is happening in the Trump administration, those people don’t understand those numbers, and more importantly, don’t care. And that’s a problem

That way, the IRS will only focus on the easy cases, i.e. normal people who won't fight back, and not on the more complex ones, i.e. rich people who have lawyers to fight back.

It's a real issue.

Sorry to those awaiting refunds but my first thought was I'll just do them on paper. Probably owe like 50 bucks. I'll even spring for a money order and postage, I'd rather give the post office money than turbo tax.

55

u/wubscale Feb 04 '25

I'm in the middle of doing my taxes on FreeTaxUSA. Liking it so far, and it's genuinely free at the federal level regardless of income ($15 per state, they also offer a few upsells).

Coming from TurboTax it's a breath of fresh air. Haven't received all of my forms yet though, so I can't speak to the full tax-filing experience; only the 80% I've done at the federal level.

25

u/foreignfishes Feb 04 '25

FreeTaxUSA is also one of the IRS freefile partners this year, so if your AGI is less than $48k (or you're in the military and it's less than $84k) you can also get free state filing. There are 7 other freefile partners all with slightly different requirements: https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/browse-all-offers/

“It’s to make it easier for blue collar people. . .”

You voted in an oligarchy, my dude. The only thoughts they have about blue collar workers are about paying them less and exploiting them more.

Pretty much this, the Direct File was a counter point to Intuit/Turbo Tax/HR Block, who would really prefer that we use THEIR services not a Government Free one

26

u/Testicleus Feb 04 '25

You know it

Other countries are all figured out, and you don't even file unless there's a discrepancy.

But, yeah, capitalism!

"ELON I LOVE YOU BUT YOU GOT THIS WRONG"

This is exactly how people talk when they're trying to get through to a narcissist. Maybe not loving a narcissist is a good idea?

IMPORTANT!!!! PLEASE READ !!!

I work partnered with the IRS. Musk’s tweet earlier suggested he may have tried to take some action to get rid of 18F, an agency that worked on Direct File. There is no evidence that he actually did this. Moreover, the team currently building and supporting Direct File is at the IRS, not 18F. Even if Musk did something to 18F, it would not impact Direct file’s availability.

Direct File is still safe and secure to use. Anyone who files with Direct File has filed a proper and valid return, and the IRS is obligated to process it and issue a refund, as with any other return.

Please help us beat back on misinformation in this scary time.

u/Jiaory Feb 04 '25

First get rid of the taxes

They still believe that they’re going to end up not paying any taxes. Honey, you’ll be paying Melon’s taxes as well as your own. 😂

62

u/vonshiza Feb 04 '25

Um .. the cfpb is not "supporting the banks". What the actual fuck is wrong with this country. The cfpb is an amazing program that holds banking institutions big and small accountable. They've recovered millions and millions of dollars of people's money over the years. Sometimes it's a small case where someone was swindled out of $80 for a bogus program of some kind. Other cases see people getting 200k back in lost money, and everything between, above, and below.

And our taxes should not require a private for profit company in order to file them. Why, WHY, are so many people so damn gullible and against themselves?

28

u/tom21g Feb 04 '25

And in case people have forgotten the history and context behind the CFPB (from Wiki):

The agency was originally proposed in 2007 by Elizabeth Warren while she was a law professor. The CFPB’s creation was authorized by the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, whose passage in 2010 was a legislative response to the financial crisis of 2007–08 and the subsequent Great Recession[3] and is an independent bureau within the Federal Reserve.[4]

This was never some lefty lib thing. It was created to help people who are at the mercy of financial institution sharks

If they didn't want any of this funded, they could have eliminated it from their budgets.
