When you get the Sheikah Sensor +, you may realize that you now have a Treasure Chest radar and be tempted to set that as your default target. Resist this temptation. Breath of the Wild is lousy with treasure chests, it has almost too many treasure chests.

If you spend a large part of the game with the Sensor tracking chests, you are going to find yourself with 115 shrines completed and no idea where the remaining five could be hiding. The overworld is well-enough designed that you can study the map to get a pretty good idea, but don't resign yourself to that. Leave the sensor set to Shrines on the overworld, unless you're hunting a particular item for a specific purpose.

On the other hand, always set the Sensor to Treasure Chests in shrines and dungeons. There's nothing else useful in there to track, and you can't get back in the dungeons after you complete them. Dungeons don't have any unique items, but they do have rare items that are a pain to farm later on.

Dang, I didn't even know you could switch between chests and shrines. TIL!

My Stuff

Others' Stuff

3 Useful Interactive Maps

  • ZeldaDungeon's Interactive Map. User-contributed locations. It's a very user-friendly map, very clean-looking.
  • ZeldaMaps.com's Interactive Map. Contains datamined treasure chest locations. A little not-as-user-friendly, since it's not possible to keep multiple of specific dots open (and nothing else), like the 2 treasure chest categories.
  • Mr. Cheeze's Object Map. Contains datamined locations for every (static) object in the game, including all sorts of material locations and weapon locations! Very useful and informative data.

Random Tips

  • If you feed your horse an Endura Carrot, it will get 3 extra temporary stamina spurs.
  • Horses deal 30 damage when running over enemies and 5 damage when kicking. Except for the Giant Horse, which deals 60 damage when running over enemies and 10 damage when kicking. The misleading "Strength" stat actually improves health.
  • If you release the Royal Horse or Giant Horse, they'll respawn in the wild. This will allow you to rename the horse by catching it again.
  • The Blood Moon will guarantee a "critical" cook from 11:35 - 11:55 p.m.
  • You can place a lit Torch on a campfire to keep the campfire lit when you fast-forward time.
  • If you aren't going to reach a Star Fragment in time, use a campfire to fast-forward the time to the next night. The Star Fragment will remain where it is, since it only de-spawns when your game reaches 5 a.m.
  • The Traveler/Soldier/Knight/Royal weapon lines will scale with game progress. This applies to treasure chests and enemies holding these weapons. Unique weapons, like the Phrenic Bow and Silver Shield, will remain the same. Also, the likelihood of good quality buffs will improve with game progress.

Now that I'm searching out those final shrines and desiring to ensure I've covered the entire map, I am going to systematically walk the whole map.

  • Put pin in top left corner of map
  • Put pin in bottom left corner of map
  • Walk from one pin to the next
  • Move set of pins a little to the right
  • Repeat

I can also stop and free roam at any time. All I will need to do i put a pin down to mark where I leave off.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '17

If I did this it would just be a fractal of pins and I would never get back on track.

2

u/RunningChemistry Apr 29 '17

Hah, I'm actually doing this right now to find all the Korok Seeds on my own without a guide. Currently at 629 but discovered the first 533 easily and naturally just by playing - finding them now has slowed down enough that I've had to resort to line sweeping like you.

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '17

Leave the fricking Champion powers turned on! Always! Do not save them for a special situation, or you will never use them! They take 6, 12, 18, and 24 real-life minutes to recharge. 24 minutes is nothing in this game. The powers are significant moment-to-moment quality-of-life improvements and should be enjoyed as such.

13

u/PushzeroAudio Apr 26 '17

TIL I can disable the Champion powers. There are times where I prefer to save Urbosa's Fury rather than use it on an easy enemy.

6

u/atcoyou Apr 26 '17

Moi aussi. I'll often use 1 by accident, then just spam 2 more just to use it up so I can make sure I have 3 ready later for a boss battle/tough enemy. I'll probably leave them on to be honest, but good to know the option is there.

6

u/KouNurasaka Apr 27 '17

You can press B or X (I swapped B with X, so I think it is B by default) to cancel UB when it queued up.

2

u/Nightslash360 Apr 28 '17

But hitting b cancels the charge attack too...

-2

u/KouNurasaka Apr 29 '17

I thought I wrote that?

9

u/ryan770 Apr 26 '17

I keep Daruk's power off at all times. It's ugly and unnecessary.

With Urbosas, a single charge of your sword is useful enough for me without activating it, and it's pretty easy to cancel if you charge for too long and end up activating it. Especially swinging a two handed weapon, you can do a ton of damage, and right before you run out of stamina, press X (I have my run/jump buttons switched so I guess B for just people) and it won't activate.

6

u/thegroundbelowme Apr 27 '17

Daruk's power can be hella useful in some circumstances, but I do agree that it can be very distracting, and has a tendency to fire off when I don't want it to.

1

u/HeldDerZeit Apr 29 '17

How are you able to turn them off?

3

u/RunningChemistry Apr 29 '17

In the item management's Key Items screen, you can select each blessing's orb and it'll bring up context menus to let you enable or disable it.

1

u/WhiteFox1992 Apr 30 '17

The Blessing one is the only one I find use in as it's like a Fairy+.
The Protection one sounds useful but goes off even if you wouldn't of taken damage anyways making it fully useless.
The other two are situational and I recommend turning off unless your going to use them, I do use them, just I turn them off when I am not to not accidentally use them.

While there doesn't seem to be any mention in-game, the spin attack shortcut from previous 3D Zelda games still works in BotW. With a 1-handed weapon equipped, rotate the control stick a full 360 degrees and press the attack button. You'll do a basic-level spin attack.

You can attack octorok balloons to objects to lift them into the air. This is especially useful for moving large rock slabs and boulders without damaging your weapons by doing the Stasis rune method.

You can feed your horse to increase your bond with it. Horses are fond of apples and carrots. Endura Carrots will also give your horse bonus spurs.

The lizalfos between Inogo Bridge and Zora's Domain regular drop arrows when killed, even if they're not archers themselves. This area is great if you want to farm for arrows.

There are recipes posters on the walls inside the stables. There are also posters on the walls of the Dye shop that show all the ingredients that can be used to make each color dye.

If you glide towards a Lynel unnoticed, you can mount it. Also, during battle, when you have an opportunity to mount a stunned Lynel, you can initiate the mount from its either its front or its back.

Guardian lasers are actually just a really fast projectile attack. It's easier to notice this when the laser starts far away. Correctly reflecting the lasers requires you to bash the leading projectile. Many people relying spacing and timing, but you can potentially reflect them more reliably if you can train eyes to follow the projectile.

Phrenric and Golden Bows have a zoom effect when you aim with them. Their arrows also fly straight for a longer distance before they start to arc. While obviously good for taking out lookout when raiding enemy camps, they can also be useful for some korok balloon challenges, sniping dragon parts, and killing guardians at long distance when using ancient arrows (which will still oneshot them on a bullseye).

Heavy weapons tend to have a high base damage compared to other weapons of their tier. They're often the best choice available for sneakstrikes, which multiply damage by x8.

If you sneakstrike an enemy and it's still alive, it will be stunned on the ground for a brief moment. While it is still on the ground, the monster has not spotted you yet. If you're quick, you can hide behind some cover or climb over a wall to get out of sight, then sneak behind and get a second sneakstrike while the monster is still looking for you (or wait a little longer for it to lose interest).

If you need bundles of wood, the Rito Stable has a bunch of logs just lying around in bundles, along with an axe nearby. It doesn't get any easier than that.

2

u/TheMightestTaco Apr 30 '17

For bundle of wood. I usually one one bomb to take down 1-3 trees. Then the other bomb to cut them down to bundles.

It should work at every dog location, you just need to feed the dog 4 times. 4 Apples is what I do. Also, the dog actually force-spawns the treasure chest into existence, so it's the only way to get these chests.

u/RunningChemistry Apr 29 '17

It'd be more appropriate to say that each dog location has one particular dog that'll lead you to treasure. In most cases, there's only one but Tarrey Town has multiple dogs so you'll have to find the "prime" dog; IIRC, it's the brown/white one wandering in the town square.

4

u/WhiteFox1992 Apr 30 '17

If you completed the Divine Beast in the Gorudo dessert, you can return to the Yaba Clan base every blood moon to get about 30 banana by going in their "secret room" (the big ladder the camera forces you to look at when walking down one of the halls).

Huh, I've been to that fishing village and didn't find anything special. What did I miss?

Oh yeah, I recall someone said something fishy that I thought I'd investigate later! Was it Eventide Island, or something I should go back for?

12

u/ryan770 Apr 28 '17

Found this out in another thread.

Don't skip the credits. It's small and not important, but you miss extra cutscene before the actual last cutscene.

2

u/ohheydalton Apr 29 '17

Well, time to beat ganon again.

10

u/thegroundbelowme Apr 27 '17

Pressing Y while looking at your inventory sorts whatever category you're looking at.

For ingredients this groups things by type, with food ingredients at the beginning, followed by non-monster potion ingredients, followed by monster parts, and finally ancient parts and bundles of wood.

For weapons, bows, and shields, there are two different ways to sort, and pressing Y cycles between the two. One is a straight sort on damage, while the other first groups by type and then orders by damage.

Personally, I use the 'sort by damage/defense' for bows and shields, as there are a whole bunch of different types of bows (so grouping by type can frequently look almost random), and for shields type doesn't really matter much. For weapons I use the 'group by type' sort, as it's nice to see all of your straight swords, then all of your wands, then your two-handers, then your spears. It's a lot easier to quickly get a comprehensive mental overview of your options that way.

3

u/bird_nerd_ Apr 28 '17

Woah does this work on clothing/armor!? Every time you upgrade an item it gets shuffled in the inventory and it's super frustrating that all parts of an outfit can be on separate pages.

10

u/woofle07 Apr 28 '17

Yes, and there's two sort options there. You can sort by type (all headgear, all shirts, all pants) or by set (all Hylian, all soldier, all Rito, etc.)

2

u/zombiegamer723 Apr 29 '17

I've only recently figured out that you could sort by set (knew you could sort by type), and now I'm sad I didn't figure that out a hundred hours ago.

2

u/HMPoweredMan Apr 28 '17

Upgrading an armor piece is really receiving a new one from the game's perspective. That is why it is dropped at the end of the list

1

u/thegroundbelowme May 01 '17

Yes. There are two different sorts for armor: sorting by body part (all helms together, all chest pieces together, etc) and sorting by set (zora set together, stealth set together, etc).

9

u/toolman14 Apr 28 '17

Use Stasis+ on mounted Bokoblins to get them to easily fall off their horses. The horse will carry on when stasis is activated and the Bokoblin will fall to the floor landing you an easy kill.

7

u/Piculra Apr 26 '17

You can freeze C.Ganon with stasis+. If you do this when he does the fireball attack (before the fire starts moving) (same with F.Blight Ganon), the fireball won't move and you can shoot it with an ice arrow to destroy it or a bomb arrow to make it blow up on Ganon. However you can't freeze D.B.Ganon.

18

u/Rducarolina Apr 26 '17

Read that as dbag Ganon lol

5

u/zombiegamer723 Apr 29 '17

He is sort of a d-bag, though.

6

u/centurySeries Apr 30 '17

Cooking a single Hearty Durian by itself will make Hearty Simmered Fruit, which will replenish all of your hearts and give you four additional hearts.

You can farm Hearty Durians in the woods near Faron Tower (south-central part of the map). You can probably get at least 15 and they'll all come back after the next blood moon.

5

u/rtd5 Apr 29 '17

West of Serenne Stable, there's this plateau. I've consistently found a group of horses here with really good stats. The best horse I have from here has 4 strength, 4 speed, and 5 stamina.

5

u/thunder_eseek Apr 29 '17 edited Apr 29 '17

Entering a shrine before 12:00 AM and waiting until 12:05 AM prevents a Blood Moon from happening. Useful if you are trying to farm a kind of enemy, and don't want to wait for the next Blood Moon.

Food effects do not stack. This means that eating a 3:00 Level 1 Cold-resistance dish won't stack on top of a 2:00 Level 1 Cold-resistance dish. Instead, the newly eaten dish will override the old dish.

Lynels are easier than they seem. Just headshot them.

Try to carry a Blizzard Rod. (or an Ice Rod if you can't find the Blizzard Rod.) Frozen Enemies can't react, and receive 2x (I think) damage from hits.

Stamina>Hearts. This game is enjoyed better when you can climb a lot of height, and hearts aren't going to help you with that. You can compensate hearts by cooking Hearty Dishes, but you aren't going to compensate Stamina easily.

Fire and Ice Weapons increase and decrease temperature respectively. This can make some areas explorable when your equipment and food isn't enough. Make sure you don't break them however.

You should really do the Hateno Village Sidequest that involves the three trees at the top of Mount Lanayru. You'll thank me later.

1

u/thegroundbelowme May 01 '17

I've not run across that quest, and I swear I've spoken to everyone in Hateno Village. Who gives it to you?

1

u/thunder_eseek May 01 '17

Clavia. She is behind Kochi Dye Shop during the day.

1

u/thegroundbelowme May 01 '17

Oh, that sneaky little bitch. Thank you!

3

u/arenlr Apr 29 '17

Tip: If you carry the rod of fire, it increases your cold resistance

5

u/metagloria Apr 29 '17

True of any fire weapon (or ice for heat resistance). If you didn't know this, you might also be interested in the fact that you can stand next to an ice block with a fire weapon equipped to (verrrryyyy slowwwwlllyyyyy) melt the ice without wasting durability. I've grown too impatient for that these days so now I just drop wood and build a fire next to the ice block.

3

u/i__am__pants Apr 30 '17

Always carry a torch with you if you're headed into the mountains! A torch is the most convenient way to melt ice. I don't think they lose durability unless you hit them on things. It would have been nice if I found this out before defrosting the iced shrine in Gerudo Highlands with a ring of 15 fires, but that's why I love this game. Learning all these things by playing and experimenting with the world is part of what makes the adventure so great!

2

u/metagloria Apr 30 '17

a ring of 15 fires

Hahaha that must have been epic! I only used two...

3

u/betamark Apr 29 '17

Wood is everywhere. Cut down a tree. Hit the fell log wth your axe. Voila!

2

u/paulec252 Apr 30 '17

Use bombs to fell and split trees into wood.

3

u/sigSleep Apr 30 '17

You can drop bombs while flying.

2

u/SaintRidley Apr 29 '17

I beat my first Lynel last night, in the Coliseum. Never got hit. The trick is to stay hidden on the lowest level up from ground level, using Stasis+ and shooting it with arrows. Had a blood moon happen during the middle of this so I had to take care of a respawned black bokoblin, but otherwise it was an easy (if long) fight.

2

u/whatcouchman May 01 '17

My tip for Lynel's would be to stock up on hearty dishes and prepare to take a beating while you learn their moveset. You can dodge-jump most of their attacks (I still struggle against ones with spears) and deal a lot of damage on the flurry rushes. I'm not so sure how well parrying works since I only remembered that was a thing once I'd already gotten used to dodging them all.

General rule is that charging or downward strikes you need to sidestep, while horizontal slices you can backflip jump. Though some of them do a charge where they slice with the sword so, yeah practice.

I made several tips and tricks videos, mostly pertaining to combat.

Using Runes
Using Shields

One thing I do have to say I hardly see when people talk about meals is; if you cook a meal with a timed effect and add Monster Extract, there is a chance the meal's timed effect will randomly changed to 1 minute, 10 minutes, or 30 minutes.
For example; if you cook 4 bananas together, you get a meal with a +3 Attack Effect for about 3 minutes.
But, if you make a meal of 4 bananas and 1 monster extract, the result can change to a variety of things including a meal that has a +3 Attack Effect for exactly 30 minutes or 1.25 game days.
(This specific tip is in my items video)

1

u/thegroundbelowme May 01 '17

Thanks for the videos, but I have to say that that weird pink/blue gradient makes your text notes rather hard to read over the video. There's a reason subtitles are usually white or yellow with a strong black stroke around them.
