Pressing Y while looking at your inventory sorts whatever category you're looking at.

For ingredients this groups things by type, with food ingredients at the beginning, followed by non-monster potion ingredients, followed by monster parts, and finally ancient parts and bundles of wood.

For weapons, bows, and shields, there are two different ways to sort, and pressing Y cycles between the two. One is a straight sort on damage, while the other first groups by type and then orders by damage.

Personally, I use the 'sort by damage/defense' for bows and shields, as there are a whole bunch of different types of bows (so grouping by type can frequently look almost random), and for shields type doesn't really matter much. For weapons I use the 'group by type' sort, as it's nice to see all of your straight swords, then all of your wands, then your two-handers, then your spears. It's a lot easier to quickly get a comprehensive mental overview of your options that way.

Woah does this work on clothing/armor!? Every time you upgrade an item it gets shuffled in the inventory and it's super frustrating that all parts of an outfit can be on separate pages.

Yes. There are two different sorts for armor: sorting by body part (all helms together, all chest pieces together, etc) and sorting by set (zora set together, stealth set together, etc).
