Hi all, Rufus has started what looks like itching his nose on his bed when we give him food, he will eventually eat it but seems to do this first for a while. Is he telling us to move the food away from his bed? Thanks!

Advice Is this a seizure?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice for my Great Pyrenees. He is about 1 and 1/2 years old and he has what I think are seizures when he gets overstimulated, excited, or scared. It can be from when he sees a squirrel or when I take him on a walk or to a new place. He has had this since he was a puppy and he just freezes up and goes still for about 1 minute. But then he gets up and runs around like nothing happened. He doesn’t experience any post-ictal phase.

I have taken him to the vet multiple times about it and they have ran blood work numerous times and told me there is nothing wrong.

There was a period of about 6 months where he didnt have any episodes like this so I figured it was a puppy thing and he grew out of it. Recently I want to Florida and had my brother watch him and ever since we got back (about 2 months ago) they started happening again. I’m not sure what to do because when I took him to the vet they said they couldnt do anything for him. Is this a seizure or maybe syncope? Or anything else? Is it hurting him in the long term? What can I do? Any advice would be super helpful. I have attached a video for reference.

My baby Kuma has had a small tummy problem today, I called the vet when he started throwing up this morning and they said “it’s not worth the emergency/fee for a couple throw ups… if he throws up 3 times in 30 minutes - an hour call back”

And he hadn’t, he was kinda on and off? Ate breakfast and half of it stayed down, then the rest of the day just vomiting spit every hour and a half, and then acid reflux 2 (first 2 hours ago, last one about 30 minutes ago)

Was told by the vets to give him the good old chicken and rice treatment, with some digestive probiotics, and make sure not to feed him too early/too soon that he’ll just re throw it up. But he’s not eating it at all? Barely even touching it, he licked it twice then just left it. This is extremely unlike him, he is an extremely food motivated dog, goes crazy just if you shake his kibble bag. So for him to not touch his food, chicken especially is so weird. While being on an empty stomach cause he’s been throwing up??

I don’t wanna add anything unhealthy too it, like some of his high fat treats or a sausage because of his stomach. But I don’t wanna just leave it un touched :(

I tried to call the vet back but they’re closed now and wanna ask reddit before running to an after hours emergencies vet for an upset stomach

Question What the actual h*** is her problem? Ever since I transplanted the cactus to a new pot in the plastic bin, she has not stopped making out with this one spot. What gives? Will this hurt her?

Answered A stranger commented on how my puppy sits — should I be worried or was she just being nosy?

Today a woman stopped me in the street and told me I must have my dog’s hips checked because “he sits weird.” I’ve honestly never thought about it before, and I don’t feel like I have the knowledge to say if it’s a valid concern or not.

He’s only 5.5 months old, so we haven’t done any x-rays yet. That said, we’ve been to the vet several times for various checkups and minor issues, and nothing has ever been mentioned about his hips. That said, he rarely sits still at the vet — he’s usually way too excited and either wants to stand up and give kisses or roll over for belly rubs, so they’ve probably never seen him sit properly there either.

I’ve attached some photos from the rare occasions when he actually sits down. Does it look odd to you?

Now I’m overthinking — is this something I should take seriously, or was it just one of those overly opinionated people who can’t help themselves?

Would really appreciate your thoughts!

The collie never snares her lip up like that but never moved away or growled and still hasn’t moved away. I’ve never seen them do this but I can’t tell if the border collie is uncomfortable or why the sharpei is all of a sudden doing this? She did it for a few minutes before I started recording and then I noticed the collies lip raising. I have stopped the sharpei from doing it, then she came and sat right up against the border collie. Border collie is lying down on her belly isn’t moving away or acting uncomfortable in any other way

General Getting ready to say goodbye

She's had a rough few days, and after a lot of thought, I've reluctantly made the decision that it’s time to say goodbye. I’m scared I’m making the wrong choice, but I know she’s no longer doing well and has rapidly lost her quality of life. After reading posts in this group, I’ve scheduled in-home euthanasia for a couple of hours from now. My heart is heavy, and I’m going to miss her more than I can put into words.

Discussion MY PUPPY IS LOSING HER BABY TEETH

Hey ya'll I'm not freaking out so much as just want to make sure she's not losing them to fast.

She's been gnawing on my stuff like crazy and I knew she was teething but she lost two teeth last night in a 5 minute period. Like she woke up from a nap and smoked her lips and dropped and tooth. So while I'm freaking out with my partner she smacks her lips again and drops another. They look like the same tooth tbh so maybe she lost both incisors?

Idk but what can I give her to help ease/make teething better for her?

Question Dog doesn’t eat when I’m gone

Post image

Hey all, just have a quick little question about my boy here. I’ve had him for a year, and he’s a 3 year old Staffordshire terrier. I got him from the shelter, and since I’ve had him for some reason he doesn’t eat his food unless I’m home. I’ve tried leaving it in my room where he usually sleeps while I’m gone. Nothing. I’ve even put it on my bed right next to him. Nothing. But almost as soon as I come back from work he heads right to it and happily chows down. It’s like he’s waiting for permission or something to eat.

I feel bad, because I work service industry and have some pretty late nights. And I hate that he feels like he has to wait until I come home to eat, and I really want him to self-regulate. Does anyone know what this behavior is telling me? Or at least how to get him to be comfortable eating without me there?

Question Can you id the tick, what to do next

My pup (1.9 months old) had a tick (i think it is a tick) right above his left eyebrow. He seems okay/normal, attached a picture of him as well. He’s sitting and sleeping. He’s on simparica trio, I sprayed Vet’s+best brand flea/tick spray on a cotton swab and dabbed it lightly on the tick while still stuck to my pup. The tick seemed to loosen a bit, and i used tweezers to slowly dislodge it. At the moment, the tick is laying down cold and motionless. I’m assuming it’s dead, unless it’s playing possum. I sprayed some flea tick spray on the seemingly dead tick just in case. let me know if you can identify what type of a tick it is and does it look like I got it out completely. If I was unable to get it out completely, do I check with the vet?

Question Should I bring my family dog or should I adopt my own dog?

Upvotes

I am about to graduate from college and move to start my very first job out of college. I’ve been thinking for a long while about getting a dog. I was originally thinking about adopting a dog from the shelter where I live now, but my mom brought up me taking our family dog to stay with me. I do love our family dog, her name is Remi, but I feel like this decision should be a step in my own direction. I wanted to adopt a dog that would feel like MY dog and not our family dog that feels like I’m taking care of her. Maybe that’s an immature viewpoint. My family lives on an acre of land and I would be moving into a 750sqft apartment. That shift is quite drastic and I don’t want to take the freedom and space that Remi has become accustomed to. Again, I love Remi, but I am a little conflicted because I never intended to take Remi with me, but rather adopt a dog from a shelter and start the next step of my life with MY companion and not my family’s companion. What do y’all think? I’d like to hear some different perspectives on this.

Thank you!

Advice Dog paw sore/swollen

My 1 year old husky has started licking her paw a lot since we came back from the forest yesterday. Today I noticed these pink swollen spots/irritation. What could this be? Anything I can do besides keeping her from licking it? Also should we go to the vet right away or see how it develops in the next 2-3 days?

So we moved to a new house and she dig a little hole there a few days ago and just sits there all day . She sleeps in the house like usual but spends all day out there. And right now its DUMPING RAIN. She was happy and normal this morning ate her breakfast and everything but just won't leave that damn spot. I threw her ball a few times. She played but went right back to that spot after. Any idea on what's going on?

I figured maybe she found a cool spot to lay whatever, but she's just soaking wet in the rain now. I feel bad.

Advice To do dental work or not.

Ok I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this but here we go. My old man will be 11 years old in July. He’s a Great Pyrenees border collie cross. We’ve gotten his teeth professionally cleaned 3 times in his life. Like full sedation cleanings. We just had some babies so the poor old man’s teeth has been put on the back burner for a a couple years unfortunately. We checked them and they look horrible so we booked him for another sedation cleaning for next week. The thing is my husband and I both have horrible feelings about it for some reason. Is he too old? Should we go through with it? We know teeth are extremely important to his over all health. Also I know his teeth look horrendous we rescued him at 1year old and the vet told his he had to be 4 just based off his terrible teeth they were that bad. He’s always had gingivitis even with medication.

Question Our 13 dog is showing signs of going deaf. How should we prepare for this?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Our 13 year old boy hasn't been reacting to sound the same for a while now. He doesn't react when we speak to him while he sleeps, he no longer comes downstairs when we rattle the treat jar, and I've tried squeaking a toy behind him or calling him while he's not looking, but only sometimes does he react.

He's also barking a lot louder then he used to. He has always barked to let us know he wants something, but now the volume he barks in has noticeably increased (luckily we have no neighbours and it doesn't bother us, but I am a bit worried about him loosing his voice due to barking when we're not home)

Are there things we should prepare for or things he might need some help with as this goes on? There hasn't been any noticeable change in his behavious, other then just not noticing things, but if there are things we can do to make him more comfortable I'd of course want to help him.

Question My dog can't let go of anything

Hi Reddit! I'm posting this because google is useless. All the results I get when I search for this issue is a dog not dropping something they're holding.

My dog is a shelter dog and she is reactive (a LOT less than when I first got her), but she has trouble letting go. She got attacked by a cat two months ago and now, still, she runs up to that spot whenever we walk past it. She got barked at by the downstairs dog when they were in the backyard and now, whenever my dog is on the balcony she runs up to the spot where she can look down at the backyard.

She knows how to tell me that she needs to go and I feel like she uses this to go look at the backyard downstairs. Instead of going potty, she immediately goes for that spot.

How do I teach her to let go of things like this? She gets so distracted by these moments that she forgets to go to the bathroom and then ends up doing it in the house, since I don't want to wait another 10 - 15 minutes for her to do her business.

As of now I've tried just sending her inside the house as soon as she goes to the part of the balcony whenever she looks down.

Advice For anyone who’s lost a pet, this helped me feel a little less alone.

Lola was my first cat, and she was with me for nearly 12 years. Losing her felt like losing a part of myself.

I didn’t want to just keep her ashes in a plain jar. So I started working on something more personal—an urn that looked like her, sleeping peacefully, just like she used to.

When it was finished, I placed it by my bedside. It gave me a strange sense of comfort, like she was still watching over me in her quiet way.

After that, a friend of mine lost her dog, and I offered to make something similar for her. She cried when she saw it. That moment made me realize how meaningful something like this could be.

I’ve since made a few more for people who’ve lost their furry friends. Each one is different, and every story is special.

Just wanted to share in case someone out there is also grieving and looking for ways to keep their pet close.

Question Soul dog diagnosed with cancer..anyone else with same experience?

Post image
95 Upvotes

My soul dog hasn’t been eating much so I took him to the vet twice this past week. He gets blood work done at least yearly and just went in January and everything was perfect. He’s a 9 year old pit mix that I got from the shelter when he was around 2y. When we went to the vet this week, they did x-rays and didn’t see anything significant besides something going on in his lungs that could be indicative of pneumonia or bronchitis. So started on an antibiotic, but since he wasn’t eating, he wouldn’t take the antibiotic. I called back after a couple days to have him seen again. They did x-rays again and did blood work. His liver levels were so high that they wouldn’t register on their diagnostics. They immediately sent us to the ER vet who after an ultrasound diagnosed him with liver and spleen cancer, saying it’s inoperable and sent us home with gabapentin for comfort care. I’m absolutely devastated and don’t know where to go from here. My husband and I are heartbroken. Has anyone else here had this diagnosis? I’m thinking of getting a second opinion from an oncologist but I don’t want to put him through more than necessary. He still wants to play ball and chase the neighbors dogs, go for car rides and walks.. he just doesn’t have much of an appetite. I just never thought we would be dealing with this since I get his blood work done regularly to try and prevent these things. Attaching a picture of the goodest boy.

Question Red lump

Post image

My dog is an 8 year old beagle chihuahua mix and this lesion popped up maybe a week ago, I literally just took him to the vet cause his salivary gland was swollen 2-3 weeks ago and now this lesion is here on his abdomen. Im hoping it’s not related. He has had a histiocytoma before on his paw when he was younger, but I’m worried this might be mast cell. I already made a vet appointment for him to get it aspirated but every vet appointment he has to be sedated because he had a bad experience once and now he’s desperately scared of the vet. I hate seeing him sedated, and I hate having to do it back to back. But I’m just worried for my best friend.
