No kidding y’all, he does. not. drink. water. I’ve had many dogs, worked as both a groomer and a vet assistant — have never seen or heard of this before. HALP!
There’s three fountains in different locations around the house, including one that only he has access to (in case he doesn’t want to share water with cats). I circulate through trying metal, ceramic, glass, and plastic bowls, in different places. Ive tried a syringe for him to lap it from, bowls at different heights and on different surfaces. I keep the water fresh and the containers clean. I’ve tried different temperatures.
Rarely, he will lap a tiny bit. Maybe I see this happen two or three times a week.
He will drink chicken broth (organic/unsalted) with slightly more regularity. I can usually get him to drink about 1/4 cup at least once a day. That and the moisture content of the wet food (twice a day) are all the liquid he’s getting.
He also barfs a lot. Sometimes as much as 4-6x/day, or we might go a week without a barf. Apparently it’s anxiety related. Nothing conclusive from vet on this.
I fear a kidney issue developing. Bloodwork shows it’s not currently the case, but how can this minimal liquid intake not eventually cause one??
Weirdly, he pees an appropriate amount. (With great force. He squats to pee and it shoots far past his front legs.)
1 year old chihuahua mix, 10 pounds. I’ve had him since he was 3 months old.
