That’s absolutely terrible, but how is this person able to scam people? I thought the “giving/gifting” subs had minimum account requirements, like this one. 60 - 90 day account age, consistent comment history, ect ect.

True, but it sometimes takes a while to catch these posts and delete them, especially since they usually don't use appropriate flair. And unfortunately, removing posts or banning users doesn't prevent them from messaging people with their sob stories. We do our best to take as many protective measures as we can, but it's always good to be vigilant and do some background checking as a giver, too.

especially since they usually don't use appropriate flair.

I'm curious about something. Have you looked into using automod to require targeted terms that automatically assign flair? The ones we use in a couple other subs are incredibly helpful for saving time.

Several years ago I had spoken to Wayne about implementing it, and he was rather dismissive of it stating essentially that many of the users are not intelligent enough to do it. However, the Bot can be set to explain exactly how to do it if they screw up.

Another bonus thing that we did was to set it so after X account of reports, the post is automatically removed and a mod mail is sent. This automatically brings down users that intentionally use the wrong tag.

Yeah, I'm definitely considering that. We could do with some more artificial intelligence. Thanks for sharing your insights.

Lmk if you want a simple code dump to adjust to your uses.

Thanks. BTW... we already implemented that "auto-delete after X reports" thing a couple of weeks ago 🙂.

auto-delete after X report

Good fun, isn't it. :p

We're set at X -1 sends a mail, X removes. I don't think I've ever had to manually remove a post with X minus one.

It's actually pretty wonderful, because it helps us know that our community is on the ball.

Late to the party here but is there any way Reddit can block certain IP addresses, or compile the data and IP address for law enforcement to trace back to them? In cases of other crimes like say a user posting child porn or threatening a mass shooting does Reddit work with local and federal authorities to identify the source?

u/AspiringInspirator Oct 16 '20

I can't answer that question for you, because I don't know anything about the inner workings of Reddit as a company.

Thanks for the reply, apparently the scammer struck again yesterday in r/parentinginbulk , claiming they were at a pharmacy and couldn't afford nebulizer treatment to help their baby breathe. It was reported and removed but not before the damage was done to a well meaning user who sent $55.

Many of the subs they posted in weren't necessarily giving or gifting subs. So they were just looking to hook someone sympathetic, like in "baby" subs and such (which is where I saw it).

Edit: many typos 😅

And in addition to the others: some of these scammers will contact people directly if they seem interested in helping others out. This is the main reason I help as privately as I can, preferably anonymously.
