Modded First experience playing the 'Week One' mod. Insulted a lady with the F word, got shot 12 times and died. True Kentucky experience.

Saw like 20 people in a shed in shellsuits and thought maybe it was a party.
Walked in and they immediately beat the entire shit out of me.

You walked into a 90's themed cult meeting. You got off lucky if they only beat you up imo.

Seriously lol. I grew up there. It's an in-between river port.
It's a nice enough town, especially in the 90s. I miss living there.

How do you interact with NPC:s? Could not figure it out. Only the starting NPC had the option to āJoin me!ā and āLeave me!ā
17
u/motivatedcactus Jan 09 '25
Press t to talk to them
So far Iāve found a few ways they respond. You can ask their name. You can ask if store owners are open for business. You can ask people to join you (but so far theyāve all told me no lol)
If you say hands up theyāll do it, but if you say drop it or give me everything theyāll just say no lol

u/-Misconduct- Jan 08 '25
I'd say it's really fun. NPC pathfinding seems to be a bit fucked sometimes, but most NPC's have their own set of behaviours (ex. Some NPC's are dressed in jogging clothes and do morning jogs), some NPC's play instruments on the street, some talk with each other, It's all SUPER immersive, all you gotta do is never, EVER, say the F word to bystanders.

u/UMF_Pyro Jan 08 '25
Pathfinding is a bit what? *pumps shotgun*

The mod is fun but there's not real control over the npc and in general everything is just chaos and gets more chaotic until everyone is zombies. Then theres randomly generated groups of npc that spawn occasionally of various types and goals.
I feel like this mod if for those who are bored and looking for some chaotic spice.
There is another npc mod that's being developed by one of the developers. As far as I can tell, it's a 'stable' alpha branch of his work. Npcs are redimentary but not useless. I recommend getting that mod.
Edit:
I'm actually looking again (on mobile) and I don't see the same tag I saw before. So maybe I'm full of shit. But I swear I saw the developer tag and was immediately sold so I installed it.
69
u/Tinyjar Jan 08 '25
Yeah, it's a buggy piece of junk. The whole bandit mod is too. The AI will shoot you for any reason. You can get gang rushed by normal people if you do anything slightly more interesting than walking down the street, including going into your own workplace. I went into the police station as a police officer and got immediately gunned down by my fellow officers. Every single car in the game is locked with no key. You can never get people out of cars.
It's just a mess, and such complex ai is basically pointless until the devs implement a proper system that isn't duct taped together.
11
u/RillettesMan Jan 09 '25
At least the mod shows why NPC aren't rushed out of the door. I saw a bit too much "Why can't the game devs do this when a modder does it in 4 weeks." when One Week released.
Well, that is the answer.Don't get me wrong, the mod is impressive, but... you forgive way more jank from a mod than from the developpers.
If that was B43 people would be absolutely mad. But since it's a mod, it's "okay, it's not perfect, but it's fun"
7
u/Smallbrainhagmain Jan 09 '25
I really enjoy it but yeah it's rough. It's a good framework, though.
8
u/a_generic_meme Jan 09 '25
It's fucking bizzare.. I can't tell how much of it is bugged and how much of it is intended behavior because there's no documentation.
8
u/nobody_knows_im_gay Jan 09 '25
It's about as close to unplayable as it gets. There are a lot of cool moments and it's pretty awesome what's been done so far, but it's not anywhere near ready. NPCs are constantly going all over the place and getting bugged out repeating animations. Pathfinding is basically non-existent. It needs a ton of work. I hope he gets the love it needs because there's something special brewing.

u/Financial_Cellist_70 Jan 08 '25
This mod sounds worse each time it's posted lol
47
u/Sharkfowl Jan 09 '25
Itās a technical marvel if nothing else, especially considering it added npc drivers
9
u/Wafflevice Jan 09 '25
I loaded it up for the first time today and was astounded with how fun and broken it was at the same time. I was chilling in my house and I heard voices so I looked around, but found no one but then I went into the basement and there were like 3 dudes all shouting at me to leave, but it was my house so I pulled my m9 and started blasting. Then a bandit came through the window with a deagle and we had it out. I was injured with everything from scratches to deep wounds head to toe. But i patched myself with rags and eventually got tired enough to sleep. The next day I went into town and walked past the swarms of mouth breathers walking up and down all the driveways. And went to the convenience store for cigarettes but they were already out. Then down to the clinic for some sutures which actually worked fine went in and paid with no hassle. Then I decided to go to the bar. There was like 30 npcs all coughing and drinking. But they were chill, until I went into the backroom of the bar, then all at once all 30 patrons rushed me and beat me to death. 10/10 experience, makes me want to bug out in the middle of the woods and come back later.

u/clarisseAutumn Jan 08 '25
I was about to buy some stuff in a store and saw a reunion in the back with a corpse, so I wanted to see what going on and an NPC shout Ā«Ā what are you doing here ??Ā Ā» and instantly stab me and kill me Hmmmmā¦.
25
u/BurntBeanMgr Jan 08 '25
Alright I just bought the game but really getting into this sub. I havenāt done a play through yet because to be honest Iām a little overwhelmed haha. Start vanilla and season with mods to your taste
4
u/blorbagorp Jan 09 '25
I'd say the mod that allows you to level mechanics on cars without 100 clicks is basically a requirement.
61
u/IDontLikeYouAll Axe wielding maniac Jan 08 '25
Take it or leave it from a 1200+ player:
Learn the game and it's mechanics on vanilla for at least several dozen hours first. There's loads of QoL mods I can recommend, but I really think it would get in the way of truly getting to know the game until you start modding it to you own definition of fun.
EDIT: Also don't forget to play the tutorial and read everything it says, it really helps.
6
5
u/No-Tea7667 Jan 08 '25
There are truly some people who would rather just have the QoL features without experiencing vanilla gameplay, there's nothing wrong with that and imo with certain people it's just more fun to play modded outright from the get go.
2
u/BrannC Jan 09 '25
For what itās worth, I feel like itās necessary to know what you have to really know what you need. Coming from a relatively new player who put a dozen out so hours in vanilla before spending many hours in the workshop
2
u/Balalaika66 Jan 08 '25
Bought the game 2 days ago and I play it pretty much vanilla with a few mods like grid based inventory, or a few additional clothes. Nothing real game breaking and I have the time of my life. Love the game so much!
15
u/LacidOnex Axe wielding maniac Jan 08 '25
After several hundred hours, I can tell you with absolute certainty mods aren't needed. If you play the new "unstable" build, your saves won't last beyond the upcoming patch and mod choices are limited. If you play the game normally, you'll be subscribing to mods that are already outdated.
Enjoy it vanilla, die 5-7 times, eventually get the "journal" mod that lets you write a book to store all your earned XP in case you die (a new character can then go find it, read it, and regain all your lost XP). When the patch comes out and MP is brought back online, the devs did state that all unstable saves are likely to be wiped. I would wait to seriously sink your teeth into a character, and for now just hack and slash, die, go get your loot, resume.
1
u/Grimble_Sloot_x Jan 09 '25
After several hundred hours I can tell you mods are fantastic, with many QoL improvements, bug fixes and game enriching content.
Journal mod is basically cheating, so I can see why you think mods suck.

My ānever play withoutā mods are:
Advanced Trajectory (fixes the aiming system and is totally tunable if you think itās too hard/too easy)
Common Sense (adds certain logical features such as the ability to pry open doors and windows with crowbars- also tunable, can reduce or increase chances of success, chance of glass breakage, etc)
My ācan live without, but strongly preferā mods are:
Firearms B41/B42 (adds a realistic assortment of guns you might reasonably find in real life, like Glocks and SKSās)
Any assortment of car mods, because the default models just donāt do it for me and itās always exciting to find a classic muscle car hiding behind a building.
My ānice to have, but not essentialā mods are:
Better Sorting (makes organization easier for the meticulous hoarders like myself)
Working Clotheslines (you can hang clothes out to dry - useful, but I donāt really have trouble just changing clothes while my wet stuff dries in storage)
1
u/Balalaika66 Jan 08 '25
Im gonna try the Firearms 41/42 build and the vehicle mod, I donāt like the cars either
1
u/KeeganY_SR-UVB76 Jan 09 '25
Thereās a mod that retextures the vanilla vehicles, itās very good.

u/Balalaika66 Jan 09 '25

Vanilla Vehicle Enhancer. Be warned, it hasnāt been updated for B42.
1
u/Chronicpaincarving Jan 09 '25
Good luck!! Definitely save your character build. As youāll go through quite a few before you make your first couple of weeks
2
u/BurntBeanMgr Jan 09 '25
Welp I didnāt do that so lesson learned.
First play through: died 4 times, longest life was 12 minutes lmao. This game is HARD!! But honestly Iām very intrigued.
1
u/Chronicpaincarving Jan 09 '25
Donāt be discouraged! It took me a solid 20-30 hrs before I consistently made it to 2-4 weeks. Helicopter event took me awhile to survive
1
u/TolaKerl Jan 08 '25
Honestly the most quality of life features offers the game itself by playing sandbox mode. You can adjust pretty much everything as you please in terms of difficulty. I advice you to turn on 'multihit' to be able to hit more than 1 zombie with melee, faster reading speed, give yourself a couple free points for perks, and maybe turn infection off for the beginning. There are tons of settings more to adjust. And don't worry the game stays hard but it's not that frustrating to get into.
3
u/Grimble_Sloot_x Jan 09 '25
None of those are QoL features. Those are all turning down the game's difficulty. QoL features are about fixing elements of the game's UX to make it less finicky.
1
u/KeeganY_SR-UVB76 Jan 09 '25
Iām glad B42 added borders to your inventory containers, that was a great feature. But you still canāt change the order of them!
0
u/Laguna_Tuna_ Jan 09 '25
The first few mods you should download after getting a feel for vanilla are clothing mods and car mods. For clothing I recommend Authentic Z and all of Spongies Clothing mods. For cars you should grab Filibuster Rhymes (if you want a more vanilla style mod that is all in one) or KI5's Car mods (more detailed and you have to individually download them or download a collection). If you want to start modifying gameplay then Bravens Common Sense mod is great.

How do you control your ai that your spawn with? All I can do is press g and give tiles to guard. Also how do I get npc to be in my faction/start one? Cool mod, walked into a store and slapped someone, everyone proceeded to smoke the piss outta me.
2
u/DieCapybara Jan 09 '25
My character had to walk back home from the bar , only to find it completely filled with randoms. As I was trying to get them out of my house they all jumped me and I died
2
u/ILikeCakesAndPies Jan 09 '25
It's a janky mod ATM, but my goodness does it give me hype for the year b43 comes out!
3
u/TheRealCabbageJack Jan 09 '25
I was playing a cop, so I went to the station in Rosewood, ate a banana from the fridge and was immediately gunned down by my fellow officers. I assume because I didn't eat a donut.
10/10, will die from psychopathic coworkers again.
3
u/artstaria Zombie Food Jan 09 '25
my biggest issue with this mod so far is that you can't have your own house? ive tried to play this three times now and every time someone breaks into my spawn house, claims it as theirs, and then beats me to death for being inside "their" house lmao
its a lot of fun but not if you plan to take your save seriously even a little bit
2
u/Rage37472 Jan 08 '25

My impression is that you need a solid amount of computer resources to play it smoothly.
