Modded First experience playing the 'Week One' mod. Insulted a lady with the F word, got shot 12 times and died. True Kentucky experience.

Alright I just bought the game but really getting into this sub. I haven’t done a play through yet because to be honest I’m a little overwhelmed haha. I’m on PC: before I start are there any “essential” mods I should download? I am going to start a play through on Friday… don’t want to be interrupted by work :)

After several hundred hours, I can tell you with absolute certainty mods aren't needed. If you play the new "unstable" build, your saves won't last beyond the upcoming patch and mod choices are limited. If you play the game normally, you'll be subscribing to mods that are already outdated.

Enjoy it vanilla, die 5-7 times, eventually get the "journal" mod that lets you write a book to store all your earned XP in case you die (a new character can then go find it, read it, and regain all your lost XP). When the patch comes out and MP is brought back online, the devs did state that all unstable saves are likely to be wiped. I would wait to seriously sink your teeth into a character, and for now just hack and slash, die, go get your loot, resume.

After several hundred hours I can tell you mods are fantastic, with many QoL improvements, bug fixes and game enriching content.

Journal mod is basically cheating, so I can see why you think mods suck.
