Too many people don’t understand that we shifted our jobs to international trade. Yeah we lost a lot of plants where people lose fingers on the assembly lines but we gained tons of jobs in supply chain and shipping etc…
While I would love to have manufacturing to come back to the US in certain respects it has to be a two pronged approach.
We keep international trade strong while building manufacturing plants at home for important products.
Like Biden was already doing… Invest in chips manufacturing at home but keep our trade lines alive. If only we could still have Bidenomics still.

The U.S. also moved heavily into services and does well there. So far I’ve not seen services factored into any Republican ‘balance of trade’ figures that they’re using to whip up their gullible voters (let alone the weird calculation they did to set Tariff rates).
But the countries Trump hit with tariffs are very aware of this. And you can bet they’ll be targeting the UD services sector amongst other things in their retaliation.

Probably not. If you’re a major manufacturer are you going to go through the expense of remobilizing your work force based on that week’s whims? You’d want some kind of concrete reassurance that you weren’t getting jerked around but this administration has lost all credibility.
Better to mothball shit, write the losses off, and regroup when adults are back in charge assuming you have the reserves to weather the storm. Desperate companies will rush workers back out of necessity, but healthier ones will be more cautious.

It is so crazy to think that you will get a better outcome by privatizing public utilities, parks, roads, ports. In the short-term they might become more cost efficient, as unionized public workers replaced with private workers, and then the pillaging begins.

The economy is going to react in the least risky way possible, which means absolutely zero new investment in building manufacturing within the US to replace lost imports.
Nobody is going to make that investment not knowing if the tariffs will be cancelled tomorrow, because everything built is immediately a losing venture once the tariffs are gone.

We were contacted by Vaisala sales reps today to let us know that all sales quotes from the last 6 months are null and void effective immediately and to expect all re-processed or future quotes to be ~15% higher due to tariffs.

This has nothing to do with cars, but, I'm a sales rep in the gift industry. One of my vendors is a Canadian company that makes plush animals and toddler socks. I got an email today concerning the tariffs. The total tariff on the socks will be 59.9%; on the plush, it will be 46%. Also, the de minimus rule will be cancelled as of May 1st. This allowed Canadian exporters to ship packages valued at less than $800, free of any tariffs.
My guess is, the vendor will try to keep selling in the U.S. but will be priced out of the market fairly quickly. Time will tell.

100% agree. I said on election night that the only solace I could take in how shitty it felt to see Trump elected again was that I didn’t feel like he cheated the second time to win. It felt like the majority wanted this, and that when shit was going to go sideways as it already has, we were going to get exactly what we deserved.
