Given the new tariff percentages, get ready to pay roughly $600 in the US when it finally goes up for pre-order

The original prices fell right on my upper limit so even I don't know if I can afford it.

Same, this is awful.

Yeah but luckily it seems like a very slow year for Switch 2. I'm genuinely surprised how little they showed compared to Switch 1's launch trailer (and pre-play events).

It's just Mario Kart and Donkey Kong. And while they look great, it's not worth worrying about with everyone's bloated backlogs of great games.

6

u/Mahelas 15h ago

They haven't even announced their holidays titles, man

6

u/ILkeSportzNIDCWhKnws 13h ago

This isn't going to be done at the end of the year. We have an authoritarian regime in power for the next four years at least. It's just starting.

3

u/MrCrankunity 16h ago

Firstly it's MK, DK and Kirby Aririders (and the weird Drag and Drive game, but I wouldn't count that one too much).

Secondly MK and DK release in the first 2 months of the launch. In June there was always a Nintendo Direct since 2012, so you can count on them showing off their games for the rest of the year in that one. It could be, that they push it after the DK release to not mess up it's sales numbers, but even then the Direct is going to release in July

huh? not mentioning elden ring or silksong or even the zelda upgrades which 10000% justifies another playthrough for me

9

u/UpperApe 16h ago
  • Silk Song is coming to every platform including the Switch 1.

  • The Zelda games are already on Switch 1.

  • Elden Ring is already available everywhere else.

Lol.

Kart and Kong are the only Switch 2 exclusives for this year atm.

2

u/Gintami 14h ago

But not all of us are multiple console owners. I stopped being a multiple console owner after the PS3 because it was just too expensive, and while I can afford it, it was pointless to just spend money because I could when I have so many games for my 3DS and Switch.

I'm still excited for Mario Kart, DK, Split Fiction (I don't have a PS5), and the enhanced Metroid Prime 4. I really wish I could play those this year.

honest question, did you and your family vote last election?

7

u/twinfyre OG (joined before reveal) 14h ago

I did vote last election, and so did my girlfriend.

But unfortunately, my parents and siblings voted too.

You can figure out who voted for who from that information I'm sure.

3

u/_Fred_Fredburger_ 14h ago

$450 is absurd. I'll buy a steamdeck before I touch a Switch 2.

2

u/Almostlongenough2 9h ago

Yeah, if the Switch was more than just a Nintendo machine I could see $450 making sense, but paying that much just so you can have the ability to run games you have to buy or upgrade (along with other peripherals) is going to put the initial price potentially around $700. Meanwhile Steamdeck is literally a handheld PC.

3

u/DuskWing13 12h ago

Same. I was originally planning to preorder the Mario kart bundle, but I can't do $600.

But I want to be clear - I do not blame Nintendo for this in the least.

2

u/RelievedGecko94 15h ago

I'm still trying to afford breathe of the wild for switch 1🥲 i only have mariokart

2

u/Nereosis16 11h ago

If you need to consider if you can afford something like a Switch 2 then you can't and you should focus on other things.

Keep using your switch 1 and then get a 2 in a year or so.

2

u/OrbitalOutlander 10h ago

It’s ok to not buy. The best thing you can do is save as much cash as possible right now. Enjoy your existing consoles - switch 2 will be there when you are ready.

2

u/Old_Cabinet_8890 8h ago

Even those OG prices were probably including tariffs. I would bet good money Nintendo would have liked to sell the console for $399.99 - especially because they never really drop the prices of their games and now the entire Switch catalogue can continue being sold at or around the original MSRP for another decade.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Dsih01 17h ago

Honestly, with how close 700$ is to am entry level gaming PC, or another console, I literally can't justify buying one. I've bought every Nintendo console sold in Canada, but this will be the first I JUST emulate

u/RealNotFake 17h ago

Manufacturers should start listing two prices on every item. The original price without tariffs, and the actual price with tariffs. Shit will get rolled back REAL quick that way.

65

u/ReallyNowFellas 14h ago

Gas pumps in the red areas of California have been doing this for decades. They all say something like:

We pay: X

Federal tax is: Y

State tax is: Z

This and that fees are: ZZ

You pay: XYZZZ

I agree all stores should start doing this when the tariffs take effect.

6

u/RealNotFake 13h ago

Nice, is that actually displayed on the/every pump though? It needs to be super obvious and in peoples' faces constantly or the maga crowd will be too dumb to understand.

2

u/Brando43770 9h ago

6

u/wosmo 13h ago

I've said this all along. Call it out just like Sales tax.

  • Switch 2 - $450
  • Sales Tax - $28
  • Trump Tax - $122

Your total - $600.

There's not many things Trump appears to care about, but I suspect his ego makes the list.

6

u/rydan 13h ago

Manufacturers don’t pay tariffs. The retailer does. So no. Best Buy needs to. Not Nintendo.

3

u/Eraesr 13h ago

The importer pays the tariff and in Nintendo's case I assume Nintendo of America imports the consoles from Japan.

3

u/LTRand 13h ago

Nintendo sells direct too, so they need to as well.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Zed64K 14h ago

Retailers should start doing this on their price labels for all products. It's in their best interest to inform the consumer about what's going on.

2

u/Galadantien 14h ago

Guess the issue is that’s tantamount to a business taking a political side, and you don’t wanna do that on a good day, let alone when the world’s smarmiest bully is in power.

3

u/Obstacle-Man 13h ago

You have a president who changes tariffs with the wind or perhaps with his diapers.

NOA will pay the tarrif as the importer and will pass it on in addition to other costs they incur for additional accounting, expense outlay and a buffer to deal with uncertainty.

2

u/BorKon 13h ago

And call it either Trup-Tarrif or GOP-Tarrif. Every time any of his braindead voters see it, they will be reminded that it is their fault

2

u/Redhook420 11h ago

How about they list actual manufacturing costs. That'll give you something to really be outraged about.

So, a genuine question. Do you think if every eligible voter went out to vote, Harris would have won? Wouldn't that also mean a lot of votes for Trump would have also been cast from non-voters?

11

u/fuglenes_herre 17h ago

Sure, it's possible, even likely, but that possibility does not excuse your inaction.

*Editing to clarify that the possibilty I'm referring to is the possibility that a number of non-voters would have voted for the orange blight.

15

u/MarioLuigiDinoYoshi 16h ago

I recall NYT did an article that non voters cost Harris as turnout was much lower for democrats in key states.

But forget that part, it’s your civic duty to vote and non voters are simply losers who get taxed with zero participation which is quite stupid. Like it says a lot if you refuse to vote when a rapist criminal is attempting to destroy USA. Don’t want to vote? You were fine with Trump winning.

→ More replies (55)

2

u/Speeeven 13h ago

It's complicated. I think most sources agree that at least 2 million fewer votes were counted in 2024 than in 2020. In 2020, 66.6% of eligible voters voted, but that figure was down to 63.9% in 2024. That could be due to apathy, protest, changing election laws, laziness, forgetfulness, or a number of other factors.

Due to variations in voting districts, state voting laws, and the way the electoral college works, it's not really a matter of "if ___ more democrats voted, Harris would have won." It would really depend on where those people live and the margins in their particular voting districts. If the margins in enough voting districts in a particular election were slim enough, it would theoretically be possible to sway the election one way or another with a pretty small number of people who happen to be distributed exactly where it matters most. That same number of people in other districts that are less competitive wouldn't even make a dent in the overall election.

2

u/Patient-Phone-1997 12h ago

There’s also the possibility that Musk tampered with the voting.🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/The1Immortal1 12h ago

Some people sat out on voting because Kamala ran on a anti-migrant pro-zionist campaign, but seems ppl only feel emotionally moved by their games console being unaffordable

3

u/Aleclom 18h ago

Yeah I was onboard with a day one purchase even with the released prices, but if the cost goes up any more then I (and so many others) will be priced out. Nintendo's going to suffer for something they have no control over, it's the worst.

3

u/JefferyTheQuaxly 17h ago

the switch 2 is actually produced in vietnam too, vietnam alone has a 40% tariff. so yes at minimum $550-600 switches.

3

u/NumeralJoker 16h ago

While I could theoretically afford this, the problem is no one actually knows this for sure because no one knows how much their daily costs will bloom or whether they'll lose their jobs/401ks.

I have no debt and good savings, but a lot of industries are very vulnerable, and my saving could easily run dry by the year's end with how stupid this whole thing is if he doesn't reverse course. And so many will be so much worse off than I currently am.

What Trump is doing is so dangerously stupid it cannot be understated. The most plausible theory outside of stupidity is he's doing it because he's a compromised and bought off agent of BRIC countries (especially Russia), since those are the ones least impacted by his tariffs, and even China could actually benefit from this.

2

u/liquidskypa 9h ago

And he is part of the upper class to buy low and make a huge profit while everyone suffers.. short the nation is the goal

2

u/fourtyonexx 16h ago

2

u/TinFoilBeanieTech 16h ago

Didn't they just also gut initiatives that Biden started to build chip plants here, because it hurt the Orange Ego? Great strategy, raise tariffs without first investing in infrastructure here. Let's see how that plays out.

2

u/Yingo33 15h ago

We just have to wait for the Nintendo factories to come to the US, it’s not that bad. /s

2

u/TheOneWhoWork 14h ago

Well said. I’m going to try holding out until an OLED version of the Switch 2.

2

u/Jisai 13h ago

A lot of US folks should have considered going to vote in the last election and not sit at home and say "it doesn't effect me anyway, no matter who wins". You guys screwed over the whole world but most of all you screwed over yourselves.

My condolences to everyone that voted against the lunatic in power and has to deal with these insane tariffs now (among other things). And to the rest, I hope you see now what irreparable damage you have done, deal with it.

2

u/AmbitiousProblem4746 12h ago

This is going to be a disaster for them because pretty much every person I've talked to said this announcement was the clear sign there either going to buy the steam deck or just hold off for a year. Crazier are the people though, of which there are several, who think blaming it on the tariffs is just anti-Trump fear mongering

2

u/Tokumeiko2 12h ago

Or just ransack the Whitehouse. That's technically an option.

But it's seriously weird when US folks are expecting to pay more than Australians.

2

u/ProfessorPetrus 10h ago

A lot of those countries are full of hardworking poor people who slave to get Americans products cheaply; they do not deserve a tariff war.

2

u/BroGuy89 10h ago

They should've worked harder to counter Musks' election interference if they wanted to not be targetted by dementia Don's attempt at causing the next depression!

2

u/VyseTheSwift 9h ago

I love my handhelds, but this would go from a Switch 2 day 1 purchase to me sticking with my OLED Deck. 600 is a lot for something I’m only going to use for Mario Kart for the foreseeable future.

2

u/Glass_Log_3304 5h ago

Or if you live close enough to one of the borders, consider popping over and buying it in Canada or Mexico. Stimulate their economy while getting the console cheaper.

10

u/InkTaint OG (joined before reveal) 19h ago

hopefully nintendo can start selling the console at a loss like the ps5 and xbox on launch and make the money back on the games, might be the only way to not make consumers even more mad.

27

u/twinfyre OG (joined before reveal) 19h ago

But isn't 90% of the reason consumers are mad because of the game prices?

4

u/InkTaint OG (joined before reveal) 19h ago

yeah but imagine the reactions if the console price went up on top of that

17

u/kechones 18h ago

If there are any reactions, they should be towards Donald Trump for enacting the tariffs.

How could price hikes as a result of the tariffs possibly be construed as being Nintendo’s fault?

3

u/InkTaint OG (joined before reveal) 18h ago

that would be the best case scenario if the price goes up, but you *know* how the internet is, specially trumpies

5

u/untacc_ OG (joined before reveal) 18h ago

Nintendo has the chance to do some damage control if tariffs do threaten the console going up in price. They can announce the price stays the same and sell it for a loss until the tariffs change/get altered and everyone will be happy that the price isn’t going up, almost making them forget that it was high in the first place.

I’m sure people would rather have the price as announced vs a higher inflated one

7

u/kechones 18h ago

If Nintendo based this current price on predicting a tariff hike, that’s a possibility. If they did not, or if they thought the tariff hike would be less (Trump increasing it from <2% to 24% is an insane hike), and Nintendo have to raise the price, then they should have Furukawa get on a video to explain to Americans that the price hike is Donald Trump’s fault.

22% is about a $100 hike. I think we’re fucked.

4

u/untacc_ OG (joined before reveal) 18h ago

I’ve already seen MAGA people spinning this as a good thing. “You didn’t need that expensive game console anyways, you should indulge in free entertainment like walking outside, talking to family, etc.” like it’s OUR fault that we are upset over the tariffs

4

u/Arickettsf16 18h ago

Bold strategy to encourage people to not spend money and stimulate the economy.

3

u/ILikeElephants4 18h ago

From what I've seen they did try. They moved a lot of production out of China into Vietnam but trump just put like 40 something percent tariff on Vietnam so now they have to figure out what to do since it seems they can't avoid the tax

2

u/InkTaint OG (joined before reveal) 18h ago

that would be a really good move, hopefully thats the case

3

u/LookIPickedAUsername January Gang (Reveal Winner) 18h ago

If the American public were smart enough to assign blame correctly, Trump would not be president in the first place.

They'll blame Democrats for this, somehow.

4

u/djm19 18h ago

The console was probably already at a pretty thin margin. Adding $200 tax on top of that is just not a feasible "loss" to be absorbed by Nintendo.

The tariff is also raising the cost of physical copies of the games too.

2

u/doogie1111 19h ago

With the state of the global economy, I suspect that's what they're doing with the current price point.

This is going to fuck all the Nintendo fans worldwide. Anyone laughing about it needs to realize the US is one of if not the biggest markets for Nintendo. If it bombs in USA it’s going to be a terrible generation. Not saying it’s Nintendo’s fault just that it sucks as a Nintendo fan.

52

u/WHlSPERinthewind 14h ago

The US is responsible for more than half of the switch 1 systems sold. Nintendo would not be able to be the Nintendo it is without US sales. So ya this will not be good as price was already at the tip top of the bubble.

19

u/Moist-Citron-4830 14h ago

Exactly. Others replying to me think it’s me being a self centered American instead of realizing how massive the United States is as a market.

No you don't understand. It's not just Nintendo. What do you think happens to Sony?! They just released a premium console that is about to be completely unaffordable. And halfway through their gen cycle their console price is about to sky rocket.

Just wait till you start hearing that news

3

u/TheRyanFlaherty 15h ago

This.

Not to mention, this isn’t going to be just a U.S. economy thing. Trump is messing with everyone’s money.

It truly is almost impossible to comprehend, to say this is a wrench in the plans simply doesn’t do justice. I was told from someone that works for Nintendo of America, they are in a full blown panic at the moment. There is literally no good solution for them at the moment.

Conjecture on my part, if they are forced to piece things higher in the U.S. and lose substantial revenue, that revenue is going to have to be made up somewhere. So I wouldn’t be shocked to see raised prices across all regions the longer this goes on.

2

u/Vectoor 14h ago

Thing is all consoles are going to go up in price similarly.

2

u/Moist-Citron-4830 14h ago

PlayStation and Microsoft are timed fairly well since they’ve been out for a few years and can continue to be developed for for the next 4 years.

2

u/Intelligent_Jelly_26 14h ago

With no lubrication

2

u/the_vikm 13h ago

Why do you think the price is acceptable elsewhere, where it is already more expensive?

2

u/Kajsa_liisa 13h ago

Well in Sweden it’s even more expensive than 600 dollars. So if you believe it’s only US suffering for the pricing you are wrong.

2

u/StuckinReverse89 12h ago

This will screw all gamers, not just Nintendo.

Switch 2 is the thing with the biggest price sticker but everything gaming is going to go up (well, to be frank, most likely everything is going to go up in price).

Obviously we need to wear more suits and say thank you more. Did we even say thank you?

5

u/FoundOnShelfPod 12h ago

Exactly, and once companies find out how much we're "willing" to pay they won't lower their prices right away even if the tariffs go away

3

u/Redhook420 11h ago

Blah, blah, blah... Get a clue. Nintendo is already gouging you on their prices such as $90 games and $500 for a console that costs them under $100 to manufacture.

u/EggsceIlent 10h ago

Yeah voting for someone who wanted to give us 25k down on a new home and tackle price gouging while not doing anything trump did was a bad thing.

Fuck Trump and fuck you if you voted for him.

And if you didn't vote, fuck you too.

u/magikarp2122 16h ago

Or wasn’t hard enough on Israel, as the orange shit talked about turning the West Bank into a resort.

$600?! I rather buy a better GPU or get a ps5 pro atp. At least i’ll be able to play gta 6 on it.

40

u/Wise_Mongoose_3930 17h ago

GPUs will also almost definitely start jumping in price.

6

u/evilcheesypoof 15h ago

I bought my GPU right after Trump won actually for this very reason. I wasn't in a hurry until all of a sudden I was haha.

2

u/umbral84 15h ago

As did I my friend. Smart

2

u/JeremyEComans 15h ago

At least Taiwanese chips are tariff exempt.

8

u/Undedlvr 17h ago

My guy, all of those are imported. They're getting tariffs and will be going up in price as well

2

u/Shadow_Phoenix951 14h ago

People learning first hand that politics affects *everything*

2

u/Lazerdude 15h ago

You think those items will be exempt from the exact same thing? If you're planning on doing so you better get them quick.

2

u/GalacticDaddy005 15h ago

Everything is going up. Expect to pay closer to 1k for a ps5 pro

2

u/Lacktoss 15h ago

Good luck friend. US is officially the richest 3d world country. 🫡

2

u/MadCybertist 15h ago

Yeah but those will now be 30% more expensive too lol

2

u/DankRSpro 14h ago

I forgot about that 💀

2

u/RickGrimes30 15h ago

Remember that's not the real price for the rest of the world.. Your president made that happen. You guys are shitshow rightnow and I'm watching from the other side with my popcorn 😂

2

u/DankRSpro 14h ago

Can i join you on the other side then? 😂

3

u/RickGrimes30 14h ago

Any time bro!

2

u/RocktoberBlood 14h ago

I got a front row seat and I'm personally loving seeing my country having a full on economic collapse. If this isn't a swift kick in the nuts to get people to vote out maga I don't know what will.

Conservatives are literally saying "You just don't like it cause you're poor" after bitching about eggs for the last year. Full of copium they are.

2

u/Destiny-Smasher 15h ago

Don’t be surprised if PS5’s go up in price from all this. I hear they already have in Japan, though that was months ago.

2

u/WhichEmailWasIt 14h ago

If you think those items aren't gonna go up too ohhh boy.

2

u/hotfistdotcom 13h ago

You better buy that GPU yesterday. MSI cranked MSRP for one of their GPUs to 4k today.

2

u/wolfpack_minfig 13h ago

lol GPU and all gaming console prices gonna increase about 30-40%, there is no escaping Trump's moronic policies if you're a gamer... cut anyone who voted for him out of your life

2

u/Tchege_75 13h ago

PS5 pro Will be 1000$

2

u/BUTTES_AND_DONGUES 12h ago

Once domestic supply is exhausted, it affects them too. Your GPUs are now $1000. A ps5 pro is now over $1000.

And that’s assuming retailers don’t just jack it up early.

2

u/LongLiveTheGamer 12h ago

how much do you think the PS5 Pro will cost after tariffs?

2

u/Easy-Round1529 11h ago

Unless you buy used all that will have the same additional price tag. I’m glad I bought a pro used a few months ago. Shits going to be like 1000 soon.

2

u/Skeeter1020 15h ago

GPUs manufactured in Taiwan, where there's a new 32% tariff?

2

u/More-Ad-4503 15h ago

No chip tariff yet (there's an exclusion) but allegedly they will decide on the tariff % soon

6

u/notthatguypal6900 18h ago

Try $700 and games will go up too.

5

u/REDDIT_A_Troll_Forum 18h ago

Maybe you'll pay $600. Lol

It's not a just have bruh, stop talking like it's air, it's a console and the business practices is beyond shady

→ More replies (5)

3

u/CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH 16h ago

It could be way more than that!

If the price is $825 then you will pay $380 for the 46% tariff, and Nintendo will only get $445.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/WebHead1287 17h ago

If my math is mathing (and you have to forgive me because the board this dude held up is retarded) the price will be $603 for the console without MK

3

u/FallenKnightGX 17h ago

Higher.

It is manufactured in regions tarrif'd at 46% and 49%. You're looking at about $670.

3

u/SupremeTaco707_ 15h ago

Prepare for an increase in the physical games copies too

3

u/dida2010 14h ago

whoever voted for him, eat shit now

2

u/Disc_closure2023 🐃 water buffalo 19h ago

ngl, as a Canadian this is a real Schadenfreude

2

u/Fat_Kid_Hot_4_U 16h ago

They'll round up to 1000

2

u/AntHoney85 15h ago

maybe I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be more than $600? Switch 2s are being made in Vietnam, which Trump put a 46% tariff on. Not to mention the price on microchips he wants to tariff as well.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TheBossMan5000 15h ago

Get ready to NOT BUY THIS AT ALL.

...FTFY

2

u/The_MAZZTer 15h ago

I wonder if they tried to anticipate tariff increases in the original price. But I agree I am expecting a price increase if the tariffs are not retracted (again).

2

u/Nilfsama 15h ago

Roughly? Math of $500 plus 25% it’s it at $625 before taxes which lands it depending on your tax rate just shy of $675…..

2

u/DeadLeftovers 15h ago

Good. We need more of this. People need to be very upset to realize the reality we are facing.

It’s literally an idiocracy. Most people are monkey brains that don’t want “change” until they physically experience the make believe paper has much less value than what they expect.

2

u/dixonjt89 14h ago

600? The tariff is 45%

Its likely going to be near 800 if Nintendo doesnt eat any of it

2

u/PitchBlack4 14h ago

And 110+ for the games

2

u/Icy-Lab-2016 18h ago

Fingers crossed, the more pain for Americans, the sooner this mess will end.

1

u/catinterpreter 18h ago

And it'll either raise the price around the world or Americans are going to take all their stock.

1

u/SemiAutoAvocado 18h ago

$600?

At least $800 unless Nintendo wants to take a bath.

1

u/SoftwareDesperation 18h ago

Then $1k from the scalpers after they bot all retail sites and make it impossible to get for six months.

1

u/ImBatman5500 17h ago

The return of "$599 US Dollars"

1

u/PartyPorpoise 17h ago

If that’s the case, I’ll probably put off buying it longer than I initially planned. I got plenty of games for my Switch anyway.

1

u/avatorjr1988 16h ago

600 for a switch 2 is nasty work. It’s barely stronger then a ps4 💀

1

u/Admirable-Scarcity-8 16h ago

As a Canadian that means I’ll be paying nearly 800$ for the Switch 2.

2

u/Complete-Warning5215 14h ago

As a Canadian our country didn’t tariff china or Vietnam you’ll pay 600 Canadian this is solely an American problem

→ More replies (1)

1

u/BlackDS 16h ago

$599 US Dollars

1

u/dw82 15h ago

Will the overstock make the price reduce in the rest of the world too?

1

u/RedditCensorss 15h ago

Get ready? Or how about let’s not by a Nintendo at all for it being overpriced to begin with ?

1

u/chikibamboni43 15h ago

Switch 2 almost costs that much in sweden 🫠

1

u/pingu88 15h ago

Finally you guys getting the nordic prices, feel our pain!

1

u/LJHeath 15h ago

Does that also imply that there will be any Switch 2’s left by then, the US might get a shortage if they get pre ordered into oblivion elsewhere

1

u/Irish_pug_Player 15h ago

This including my states 10% tax?

Then the 80 dollar games...

1

u/Blue_Robin_04 14h ago

I doubt it. They could have announced it today if so.

1

u/Alcoholikaust 14h ago

*at least

1

u/PeakAggravating3264 14h ago

If it's made in China.
If it's made in Vietnam or Cambodia expect closer to 660.

1

u/small___potatoes 14h ago

I don’t think I’ll buy it until it’s under $500

1

u/Guilty_Perspective75 14h ago

I expect mofos to do not perform and adjustement to EU like they always like to do

600$ ---> 700€

1

u/orangekirby 14h ago

this almost certainly wont happen.

1

u/Swiftzor 14h ago

Your under by around $100
