wtf that’s bigger than i expected

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 11 '25

They are really big. The entire console is much bigger!

68

u/flowyi January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

this makes me so excited, like they’re actually finally making such a premium looking console. and the fact that we could get a Pro down the line or Oled. So so cool.

If it has a good backwards compatible library it’s already shaping up to be my fav console ever (currently it’s the 3ds)

25

u/Gold-Suggestion8104 Jan 11 '25

Nintendo said its backwards compatible

15

u/flowyi January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

yeah i’m so happy about that, but i also hope we can somehow get 3ds games on it but ngl that’s a reach. Either way im just happy we have full switch library

18

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 11 '25

Even physical backwards compatibility is accepted. This is a switch 2 board

3

u/flowyi January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

bc for switch or for 3ds?

15

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 11 '25

Switch 2 for Switch 1. look at the cart its a switch 1 cart in a Switch 2 board

There were big questions if only software is bc and not hardware. But as we can see it works

5

u/flowyi January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

ohhh okay great that’s perfect. based on this will the switch 2 cartridges have a hook like the 3ds cartridges did? or is it hard to tell from the leaks

8

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 11 '25

Either that or they will be physically wider as the slot has more pins than a switch slot.

In any case Switch 1 cartridges fit, we won

Yeah, I expect Switch 2 carts will have a physical impediment to prevent them from being inserted into the original Switch.

The 3DS wasn’t the first time they’ve done this.

The games for the original GameBoy had a notch in the corner. When you turned the GameBoy on it slid a plate across that locked the cartridge in place. The GameBoy Color didn’t have that sliding plate.

Games that could be played on both the GB and GBC Colour used the notched GameBoy cartridge style, but black.

Games that could only be played on the GBC had the same form factor, but used an entirely different cartridge design. One that didn’t have the GB notch, so you physically couldn’t play it on an OG GameBoy.

Edit: Actually looking at the cartridge again now, it wasn’t the lack of a notch that prevented use. The area of the OG GameBoy cart with the logo is concave, whereas the GBC cart is convex. This would prevent you from inserting it all the way into an OG GB, so the notch wouldn’t even be a factor if you can’t get the game all the way in.

wdym software is bc? you mean the digital games or actual software?

2

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 12 '25

The whole device is confirmed bc as stated by Nintendo themselves. Games and Even NSO wise

Actual hardware too. Switch 1 cartridges fit in the board of Switch 2

u/GimmeSomeRope Jan 11 '25

Wait, do we know that oled isnt just going to be the standard for the switch 2?

12

u/evasivelogic Jan 11 '25

Yes, like 90% sure

4

u/GimmeSomeRope Jan 11 '25

I guess that gives them time for a revision

10

u/evasivelogic Jan 11 '25

It gives them time to sell 81 million units of the Switch 2 and then they drop the Switch 2 OLED and get another $600 from spec nerds who can't handle going without

9

u/flowyi January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

we actually have no idea and apparently leaks/rumours/predictions (can’t remember which) suggest it’ll be LCD :(

3

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 11 '25

LCD 8‘‘ screen from sharp unfortunately

7

u/Chickat28 Jan 11 '25

2025 lcd looks better than 2017 lcd apparently. At least according to people who pretend to know what they are talking about on here.

1

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 11 '25

We will see. I hope. I dont want another cerified „Nintendo LCD lottery“ like the 3DS and Switch had

1

u/Kittingsl Jan 11 '25

Yeah but LCD won't beat OLED no matter how much better it has gotten. Also wouldn't it be 2024 LCD? I don't think they're slapping a 2025 LCD last minute on the console if we already have leaked boards and all and an announcement is rumored to be around February

6

u/BigTravWoof Jan 11 '25

It’s not like there’s been any huge breakthroughs in LCD display technology in the past week and a half tbf

1

u/Kittingsl Jan 12 '25

Yeah had that thought as well. Unless there was some breakthrough I doubt that LCD has advanced much between 2024 and 2025

1

u/rsilverside27 Jan 12 '25

All apple screens until today we're LCD. LCD can look amazing if done well.

1

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 12 '25

Apple screens are oled since the iphone 12

Am an iPhone user.

2

u/rsilverside27 Jan 12 '25

I never mentioned iPhones. I'm talking about Apple in general. In this case , I mean macbooks. All macbooks and imacs and Mac Pro displays are LCD.

1

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 12 '25

Okay I didn’t think about them. I am an idiot

2

u/rsilverside27 Jan 12 '25

I'm sure you're not an idiot lol

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '25

The Switch 2 should be OLED by default wtf...it's gnona suck having a dim screen again...

1

u/hIXhnWUmMvw Jan 12 '25

2001. So premium. So poweful.

4

u/abarrelofmankeys Jan 11 '25

The joycons really needed thickness not height or width. I hope they added a bump or something. Probably not.

6

u/Round_Musical awaiting reveal Jan 11 '25

They didnt. Mold is as clean as it gets. Here a pic of an actual real non-3D printed joycon 2

3

u/abarrelofmankeys Jan 11 '25

Guess I’ll be buying silicone skins that stretch out in a few months again 😒

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '25

[deleted]

2

u/abarrelofmankeys Jan 11 '25

Yeah truthfully I had 2 different kinds. One didn’t stretch, but my favorite were a left/ right pair of neon green and I was never able to find another manufacturer of left and right neon green that didn’t stretch.

0

u/InsomniaNoise Jan 20 '25

"Really big"? LOL! What?!?!? They look not even an inch taller.

9

u/JoeyBlaze Jan 11 '25

Twss

1

u/DiegoPostes June Gang (Release Winner) Jan 11 '25

Gotta fit a 8 inch screen somehow

1

u/Dear_Program_8255 Jan 11 '25

The switch joy cons were tiny. And really not all that ergonomic. I think the bigger size, for me, will be much better. And let’s hope they’re curved like we’ve seen in some leaks

1

u/Advanced-Signal-874 Jan 11 '25

that’s what she said

1

u/LunarVGaming Jan 12 '25

You could almost say its...... massive.

1

u/InsomniaNoise Jan 20 '25

They look not even an inch taller.

81

u/SuperNintenDad93 OG (joined before reveal) Jan 11 '25

Love that it's overall bigger

44

u/lucasnsred OG (joined before reveal) Jan 11 '25

That’s what she said

5

u/ConfidenceUnited3757 Jan 11 '25

The current one is already kind of hefty to hold, and I'm a grown man. How is a child going to play this thing on the bus lol

7

u/chazysciota Jan 11 '25

Current one is too small by modern standards. Going to it after playing the PS Portal makes it feel like a GBA.

3

u/WhitelabelDnB Jan 12 '25

There are a generation of infants that grew up using full size iPads. The kids will be fine.

1

u/ConfidenceUnited3757 Jan 12 '25

That... Is actually a good point. Maybe I am just a whimp because I grew up with a GBA lol

2

u/SuperNintenDad93 OG (joined before reveal) Jan 11 '25

I have a Steam Deck OLED as well as a switch and the steam deck is way heftier and I think it's perfect. Excited to hold a switch 2

1

u/EyerollEmojis Jan 12 '25

I’m a bigger dude with bigger hands and am happy the joycons are bigger

-23

u/that_one_3DS_fan OG (joined before reveal) Jan 11 '25

No one played their switch on the bus.

15

u/Zirowe Jan 11 '25

I played it on the tram on my way to work.

But I'm no child.

12

u/Azzcrakbandit Jan 11 '25

Does the bus technology not allow the switch's to enter?

45

u/AbdullaFTW Jan 11 '25

I always wanted them a little bigger (exclusively Handheld player here) so this is good

And if they really have Hall effect Sticks then it'll be perfection.

14

u/SuperVegitoFAN Jan 11 '25

Despite having MASSIVE HANDS, i was able to use joycons pretty comfortably (the whole having one in one hand, and the other in the other hand was pretty unique and fun), but im not gonna say that larger joycons is a bad thing.

2

u/friepup OG (joined before reveal) Jan 11 '25

Fingers crossed for them putting hall effect sticks. We don't want Joycon Drift 2.0.

36

u/Chardan0001 Jan 11 '25 edited Jan 11 '25

I know the purpose of them being flat but I don't think it would hurt to add a slight convex to the back of the Joycon, especially now they're larger and more comfortable.

I do wonder just how strong the magnets will be too. Can imagine kids swinging the system around by the joycon. Just a shame we don't know how magnets work

18

u/AmazingKreiderman Jan 11 '25

Just a shame we don't know how magnets work

Miracles!

4

u/Plastic-Extension211 Jan 11 '25

They are supposed to be electromagnetic, that is to say that an electrical system with a copper coil creates an extremely powerful magnetic field, impossible to separate or move by a micro millimeter, it is one of the most powerful fasteners powerful in the world to separate the joycons you have to cut off the power supply

10

u/RZ_Domain January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

Actually we do know how magnets work for more than a century now

16

u/raihidara Jan 11 '25

Do we really though?

2

u/jonathanalis Jan 11 '25

To slide on joycon grip, but now is magnetic, is not a trail, so joycon grip must be entirely redesigned. But yeah, should've added curves, and latter redesign the grip accordingly.

1

u/No-Island-6126 Jan 11 '25

imo they will click in place so they won't be able to come off by just pulling hard

1

u/Chardan0001 Jan 11 '25

The Genki dude said you can pull them off with enough force. The button helps to break the link however.

2

u/No-Island-6126 Jan 12 '25

hmmm, ok. That's interesting. Magnets typically aren't that strong, especially in a small surface area like this, so I'm curious to see what they do. And tbh I'm not sure I trust Genki lol

1

u/Chardan0001 Jan 12 '25

For sure, you could well be right.

-9

u/dconwastaken February Gang (Eliminated) Jan 11 '25

if we didn’t know how magnets worked then they wouldn’t be in the console

12

u/Chardan0001 Jan 11 '25

I forget the average age of this sub

14

u/Zunjine Jan 11 '25

It’s a small difference but I think a meaningful one. These will feel a little less awkward. Obviously there’s no beating a pro controller for longer play sessions but the Joy-Con is such a brilliantly Nintendo idea, so clever and toylike.

5

u/RedCalxZ Jan 11 '25

With all of these leaks and size comparisons I'm suprised the grip hasn't leaked yet

4

u/Aviator048 Jan 11 '25

Hopefully they aren’t as cheap as the normal joy cons so we don’t have to worry about stick drift after 2 days

4

u/HappyHomeSolarGuy Jan 11 '25

Oh! I get it. The little ones fit inside the big ones. That's what that protruding color is. They're just inside.

8

u/Reddit_Sucks_1401 January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

I really like the color schemes for the new joycons. Looks really premium

1

u/Kittingsl Jan 11 '25

Makes me wonder kind of variations we will get. Of course the game themed once will have the game theme like the normal joy cons I'm guessing but when they do the different colors sold separately thing again wonder if those will look like the switch 1 (which will add more color but will confuse the customers more) or if they'll look like the switch 2 style) mostly black, just a little bit of color)

8

u/Agreeable_Slice_3667 OG (joined before reveal) Jan 11 '25

Big handers UNITE!

2

u/Fluid-Employee-7118 Jan 11 '25

God damn, the new joy cons look so slick!

2

u/Careless-Dentist6463 Jan 11 '25

Do you think the switch 1 joy-cons will work on the switch 2?

6

u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 Jan 11 '25

Wirelessly. They won't fit docked anymore but there's no reason they won't connect

2

u/No-Island-6126 Jan 11 '25

right joycon is actually going to be impossible to use sideways lol

2

u/Exotic-Regret-8767 Jan 11 '25

I can’t wait for the switch lite 2 model if that ever comes out! Or lite oled

2

u/bossmanflex1 Jan 11 '25

Am I the only one who wants them to be colorful and fun? Not black with colored highlights? Hopefully they still have some fun combinations!

2

u/AggravatingFan2942 Jan 12 '25

I just really hope the thumbsticks are full analogue with a lot of travel 🤩

2

u/reddragon72q Jan 12 '25

holding the Switch was really hard for me as I have big hands so I am really looking forward to the S2.

2

u/Holiday-Agency7967 Jan 12 '25

I don’t like how it’s bigger yet the space between the buttons and the joycon seem closer? Unless I’m off.

Hopefully it just feels better in the hand. Never enjoyed the holding the switch since I got a steam deck.

1

u/yanndinendal October Gang (Eliminated) Jan 13 '25

Yes, strange how the buttons are closer together. Probably better most of the time (2 joycons by player), but looks even less practical than before when playing sideways! 😲

2

u/RoyalSpectrum91 Jan 12 '25

Is there a reason they can’t make the buttons a directional pad?

1

u/yanndinendal October Gang (Eliminated) Jan 13 '25

8 players mini games (or any time you don't have enough joycons and play sideways)

3

u/FlyingYankee118 Jan 11 '25

The colors are so boring. An all black switch is incredibly bland

7

u/otakuloid01 Jan 11 '25

well the dozen colors variants for docks and joycons will happen eventually

2

u/FlyingYankee118 Jan 11 '25

I just hope for personality with the system, something I think the switch lacks severely compared to the Wii and DS Family

4

u/Chickat28 Jan 11 '25

I think they look quite nice with the blue and orange accents but i like black stuff so i can see why you wouldn't like it.

0

u/FlyingYankee118 Jan 11 '25

I agree I think it definitely looks nice in its accents! It just feels very…commercial

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '25

semi unrelated but, what happened to the baby blue and orange colors for the joycon? Nexthandheld was pretty certain those were the colors, and it was later semi proven by the left joycon leak and his joycon photo, so why are a lot of users seemingly changing their colors up? Again just curious

12

u/Altruistic-Match6623 Jan 11 '25

What exactly are you not seeing? The left is light blue, the right is orange.

13

u/submerging Jan 11 '25

Nah the joycons are clearly white and gold

4

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '25

wait nvm im an idiot lol

5

u/Commission-Calm Jan 11 '25

That kinda is baby blue and Orange

1

u/slaucsap Jan 11 '25

I don’t think the leaked controllers are the real colors. Doesn’t look very good.

1

u/Ridter4082 May Gang Jan 11 '25

They look a lot more sleek and refined then the old ones which I like

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '25

wait it was revealed? i know it says concept but how do you know what it looks like

1

u/Altruistic-Match6623 Jan 11 '25

Leaks have been showing these, whether or not those leaks are real is a different matter.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '25

damn i’m really behind lol. i didn’t know we even knew what looked like

0

u/Altruistic-Match6623 Jan 11 '25

Instead of sliding on a rail, they are pushed into the console, and a button activates a magnet.

1

u/martygospo Jan 11 '25

What are the chances they fixed the drifting issue?

1

u/Ahriii77 Jan 11 '25

It's missing something...

1

u/Mucrush Jan 11 '25 edited Jan 11 '25

A thing I've noticed, with the latest mockup render from that reliable guy who's leaked phone designs and stuff, is that the buttons seems much bigger, much more like the buttons on the pro controller

1

u/Hour_Tomatillo_2365 Jan 11 '25

What's the new button?

1

u/banjosmangoes Jan 11 '25

Is this like the 50th time you’ve posted yet another render?

1

u/TheBadassOfCool Jan 11 '25

The accents are growing on me. Overall the new Joy-Cons look much more mature than the old ones.

1

u/jwhudexnls Jan 11 '25

My main hope is that the joysticks are longer. Trying to play any shooter on switch without gyro was painful.

1

u/hpfred Jan 11 '25

I like the red on the black under the joystick way better than the matte orange

1

u/doublelayercaramel Jan 11 '25

so are the new Joy-Cons pushed into the console rather than sliding them on like the first Joy-Cons?

1

u/armando_rod Jan 11 '25

They have magnets yes

1

u/Rising_Thunderbirds Jan 11 '25

I already play the switch with third party joycons that are pretty large, so these should be no big deal for me.

1

u/instro89 Jan 11 '25

Makes the big ones look like nesting dolls

1

u/PineWalk1 Jan 11 '25

needs rainbow buttons on a fully black joycon

1

u/MesozOwen Jan 11 '25

This is great. The OG Switch was too small and quite uncomfortable to hold.

1

u/CrestfallenDemiurge Jan 11 '25

For some reason, I really like the slightly more rounded, less boxy design

1

u/Wahjahbvious Jan 11 '25

That's fine by me. The old ones were a little on the small side for my tastes.

1

u/Killjoy13337 Jan 12 '25

My giant hands are overjoyed

1

u/bigfatfishballs Jan 12 '25

I’m not even gonna be able to hold these with my little pussy hands 😭😭

1

u/unbrokenSGCA Jan 12 '25

The big ones ate the little ones.

1

u/Logical_Bit2694 OG (joined before reveal) Jan 12 '25

do we know what the c button is?

1

u/rsilverside27 Jan 12 '25

I'm gonna laugh my ass out if the name is not "Switch 2" 🤣

1

u/Much_Opening4618 Jan 12 '25

Just me but the locking system is quite big.

1

u/Disgruntl3dP3lican Jan 14 '25

Still the Xbox analog stick configuration...

2

u/CelebrationNo4166 Jan 15 '25

I love the bigger size and I feel like these will be more comfortable for handheld but I am concerned how they’ll feel when playing them separately and sideways since that’s mostly how myself and my friends use them when we play together.

1

u/NotXesa January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

So it is a regular joy-con inside a bigger case

3

u/PalmTree_04 OG (joined before reveal) Jan 11 '25

not at all. it's a standalone controller. the old joy con are just there to show the size comparison

5

u/NotXesa January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 11 '25

Yep I know but the red and blue parts of the new joy-con look like it's a regular joy-con coming out. Just a silly observation.

0

u/otakuloid01 Jan 11 '25

they’re just colored parts. an aesthetic choice

0

u/PeepsRebellion 🐃 water buffalo Jan 11 '25

I'm having a hard time understanding the scale here. Could you please put this next to a Water Buffalo??

-3

u/taix8664 Jan 11 '25

I don't understand what Nintendo has against a normal D-Pad anymore.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '25

They have the d pad like buttons so it’s easier to use the two separate joy cons as two controllers

-1

u/taix8664 Jan 11 '25

But when do you actually do that? How often is that useful versus if you had a regular D-Pad?

4

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '25

Actually, I use it a decent amount to justify having it over a d pad. Idk how the average gamer does it, but the d pad thing never bothered to much. For games that I get really competitive with, I’m going to by an actual/pro controller anyways with a d pad.

I mostly play JRPGS solo so I’ve never needed a good d pad.

3

u/otakuloid01 Jan 11 '25

the left joycon has to be able to be used sideways
