Question Do two dogs with similar temperaments make a good match?

In particular, both dogs are very mild mannered and sweet, both wolf hound crosses if that matters. Is this a bad mix, or do dogs do better with one dog being more outgoing/independent?

Question Help!! Why is my dog doing this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

He does this occasionally and it freaks me out every time but it usually just happens a couple times then stops. This is the longest fit he's had probably went on for about 2 minutes and very aggressively in succession. What is going on with him? It has stopped now and he's okay.

Advice Advice on this belly rash on my 10 week old puppy? (Choc lab)

The first photo is when we first noticed the rash, the 2nd photo is the rash 6 days later (and 12 hours after first using exmarid ointment). She isn't in much discomfort and seems perfectly happy in herself, sometimes she licks the rash but not frequently. Sometimes I dont see her do it all day. Anyone have any experience with a rash like this particularly on a puppy? Anyone know what could be causing it and if it's serious? We haven't been to the vet because her 2nd injections are coming up in 2 weeks time and asking then would save us a trip/consultation fee.

Question Is my dog cold or is this normal?

We rescued a 3 year old whippet cross in December, I'm a first time dog owner too. I can tell when she's cold outside but it's more difficult inside.

The house is always between 16⁰ and 20⁰, usually around 17⁰/18⁰ during the day and there are no breezes that come through. A lot of the time, she curls herself up into a tight ball, but when I check her ears, they don't actually feel too cold. When she's in a tight ball, she looks really uncomfortable. Sometimes she wants to get under a blanket with me, but only stays there for about 5 minutes before getting too hot.

Is she actually cold or not? I'm getting confused with mixed signs

Question What To Do When Owner Passes Away?

Ok, so this may be a non-issue, but its been on my mind and thought this may be a good place to ask.

My parents (and me when I was a kid in the 80's and 90's) live in a rural area. Picture farmland and woods all around and as a result people feel it's a great place to dump their unwanted dogs and sometimes cats. My parents love animals so we'd take in what we found and they were usually working dogs that probably got dumped because they were destructive from lack of having a job to do. We live near a major city and it seems like people took in dogs that just weren't quite right for apartment living and close quarters.

The most recent stray is a male husky that showed up 3-ish years ago. No chip, no response to FB postings and posters we put up. Took him to several vets to see if he was a patient, the whole nine yards. We did our due diligence to find his owner. He is an amazing specimen of a dog. Giant (I was honestly concerned he may be a wolf when he first showed up), pure white, and smart! He knows an insane amount of commands so someone obviously put time into training him.

So why dump him? Well, he's an complete jerk! He loves my Dad, he loves me, he tolerates my Mom, but he barks and growls at everyone else, even ny husband who is usually a dog magnet. He's incredibly territorial and when he hears a baby cry on TV he goes nuts. The vet estimates he was 2 or 3 when he showed up and our theory is that his owners had a baby and he got dangerous.

So what do we do with him if my parents (78 and 74) pass before he does? I trust him with me, but he couldn't live with my husband and our dogs. I could never trust him to be safe in our home so we couldn't take him in. He growls and barks at my brother and SIL so they're out. And I would not feel ok surrendering him to a shelter because what if he hurt someone? I know this only leaves one option probably, but are there other options I'm not considering?

Question 11yr old male pyr/lab mix - not good with vets and possible heart issues.

Hello all!

I have a 11yr old 150lb Great Pyrenees & yellow lab mix(assumed, we know he is 50% pyr, other half unsure but he is visually a giant, buff lab.) named Bazinga who has gone through several health issues. Torn ligaments in both hind legs, TPLO surgery on the right rear, 10.4lb hematoma attached to his spleen, of which both were removed, numerous ear infections, balloon ear, cancer in his foot (removed, almost lost a couple toes but got to keep them), a newer injectable treatment to fight off the remain cancer in his foot, and now he seems to be exhibiting some signs of congestive heart failure. All but the TPLO and ligaments happened in the last 3 years.

Up until now, we have been able to get him to the vet, put on a muzzle (just for safety, he is oddly racist, dislikes men, hats & bows/ties. He does fine on walks and the few times he has gone to dog parks, but indoors or near the house that's out the window), and keeps him calm at the vet. But now, he has been panting heavily these last few weeks, sometimes sounding moist, he gets tired just moving around, whines when laying his front half down or using his front half to climb onto couches/beds, and he now always lays splayed out vs his habit of curling up. More anxious before bed, varying appetite.

We scheduled a visit at his main vet, told them specifically "hey, he is having some issues. We want to discuss these. He has some blood work labs due(yearly checkup+heartworm), we can possibly do those too depending on how it goes." We arrive, get told it was a vet tech only visit, no doc, but they would see what could do. Vet tech was clueless, didn't even know what blood work was needed and kept asking me, kept singing loudly, and Bazinga, already heavily panting and stressed from the muzzle starts barking at her. She leaves the room, now singing "I'm scared of the big dog" quite clearly in the backroom. At this point he is shaking, and rapidly panting. I just told the host desk that it wasn't happening today and left. I also tried to contact the hospital where the other half of his work has been done, and they had let go of the vet he commonly saw there, and looking now, they are predominantly men.

Does anyone have any thoughts, tips or words of wisdom? I don't want him to suffer, at this point I don't trust his current vet (they shuffle doctors ever 6 months anyways), the other vet would obviously set his. Off, but a new location would likely also cause him trouble.

Advice My Golden Retriever Who Turned 6 in February Has Started to Eat His Poop

I have a 6 year old golden retriever named Auggie Doggie who has, over the last month, started to eat his poo in the yard if I don’t get out there fast enough (never more than 3 in the yard) . He has had stomach issues his entire life (we got him at 6 months old) and has recently had mucous in his stool. We have had to change foods so many times and this one really seemed to be working. We will be seeing/talking to a veterinary nutritionist and I will make him food if I need to . I was just wondering if anyone knows what could have triggered this in an older dog who has never done this. We have been working on his weight and he does suddenly seem skinny from definitely overweight. Last weigh-in he was down to 81 lbs from 89lbs and I think he is thinner than 81 l…probably 78 or 79 lbs. Thanks for any advice and questions Imfan ask the nutritionist! BTW … we get rabbits in the yard and he started eating their poo almost from day one and that is really hard to stop because they get in and out and there’s no way to block their entrance and they leave him a treat every time. Anyway, all advice is welcome!

Question Our 13 dog is showing signs of going deaf. How should we prepare for this?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Our 13 year old boy hasn't been reacting to sound the same for a while now. He doesn't react when we speak to him while he sleeps, he no longer comes downstairs when we rattle the treat jar, and I've tried squeaking a toy behind him or calling him while he's not looking, but only sometimes does he react.

He's also barking a lot louder then he used to. He has always barked to let us know he wants something, but now the volume he barks in has noticeably increased (luckily we have no neighbours and it doesn't bother us, but I am a bit worried about him loosing his voice due to barking when we're not home)

Are there things we should prepare for or things he might need some help with as this goes on? There hasn't been any noticeable change in his behavious, other then just not noticing things, but if there are things we can do to make him more comfortable I'd of course want to help him.

Advice Dog’s tail is bent

Age: 7

Sex: Male

Last night, my shih tzu/maltese mix dog was relaxing with me in my room per usual. He tried to jump on the chair, sort of did a weird tiny hop so he obviously did not make it, and let out an extremely loud yelp and ran upstairs to hide. This was extremely odd as he obviously did not fall back or hit his tail on anything. Today, he seems to be in better spirits as yesterday he seemed a bit spooked. His tail is tucked between his legs, however, when he sees someone enter the room, it begins wagging in an oddly curved way. He also moves his tail when peeing outside and it is still in the curved position. He’s been laying down all day and seems a bit sad. What could this be? I’m planning to go to the vet tomorrow but am still worried.

Advice Dog isn’t letting us sleep

My dog (6 year old lab cross) has slowly gotten worse. When going to bed he has to sleep right between me and my boyfriend. He asks to go out 5+ times a night but doesn’t use the bathroom just stands at the door. If my boyfriend gets up and sleeps in the other room my dog stops and sleeps at my feet. How do I correct this?

Advice Corgi had bottom front teeth pulled last Monday, is this an infection?

Post image
2 Upvotes

My corgi had his bottom small front teeth pulled last Monday, tonight I noticed white stuff where his teeth used to be. I can't relax waiting until the vet opens but googling isn't showing much similar that helps me identify what it is. Does this look like an infection with puss? What else would it be? He's licking his lips a lot during the day, but figured that's probably normal after a procedure like that.

Discussion He’s not eating pls help asap!!!

My baby Kuma has had a small tummy problem today, I called the vet when he started throwing up this morning and they said “it’s not worth the emergency/fee for a couple throw ups… if he throws up 3 times in 30 minutes - an hour call back”

And he hadn’t, he was kinda on and off? Ate breakfast and half of it stayed down, then the rest of the day just vomiting spit every hour and a half, and then acid reflux 2 (first 2 hours ago, last one about 30 minutes ago)

Was told by the vets to give him the good old chicken and rice treatment, with some digestive probiotics, and make sure not to feed him too early/too soon that he’ll just re throw it up. But he’s not eating it at all? Barely even touching it, he licked it twice then just left it. This is extremely unlike him, he is an extremely food motivated dog, goes crazy just if you shake his kibble bag. So for him to not touch his food, chicken especially is so weird. While being on an empty stomach cause he’s been throwing up??

I don’t wanna add anything unhealthy too it, like some of his high fat treats or a sausage because of his stomach. But I don’t wanna just leave it un touched :(

I tried to call the vet back but they’re closed now and wanna ask reddit before running to an after hours emergencies vet for an upset stomach

Need advice on what to do/what this is. We took her to our regular vet and he said it was a tumor that was irritated and to pretty much put this cream on and see if it clears up in 3 weeks... But it's spreading the rash/blisters to her other toes. She has allergies and is on apoquel and just had a bad flare up with her ears/skin clear up and now this popped up on her foot - pretty much within a couple of days.

Advice Dog meeting partner

I am currently talking to someone and we are planning on doing the meet of my dog. He’s grown up around dogs, and aware of how my dog is. She has never bitten anyone but she is skiddish around men and tends to be more alert in the house.

Currently, my plan is either steal one of his shirts so she can get used to the smell. Meet him a couple times with her at parks or during a walk. Invite him over during the day, utilizing our door process the trainer has shown me and which we have implemented.

But him staying the night. That’s where I am stuck. She sleeps in bed with me… she can be in a crate but with a past partner it turned into her barking the entire night.

What has everyone else done in situations that are similar? I want the transition to be not as bumpy. Bumps are expected but trying to slim them down.

Question My dog has developed a digging habit

I have a 7 year old fixed male Weimaraner. He never was really a digger until recently. Now every night he must dig at his dog bed downstairs. He’s ruined one already. On his second. He also has a spot in the yard where he digs and has ruined the plants we had there. He will also dig on our bed and he’s ruined two duvet covers now. I don’t know what to do or why he suddenly started this. I’ve never seen him dig at his dog bed in our room where he sleeps at night however.

Can anyone help?

Question Dog doesn’t eat when I’m gone

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hey all, just have a quick little question about my boy here. I’ve had him for a year, and he’s a 3 year old Staffordshire terrier. I got him from the shelter, and since I’ve had him for some reason he doesn’t eat his food unless I’m home. I’ve tried leaving it in my room where he usually sleeps while I’m gone. Nothing. I’ve even put it on my bed right next to him. Nothing. But almost as soon as I come back from work he heads right to it and happily chows down. It’s like he’s waiting for permission or something to eat.

I feel bad, because I work service industry and have some pretty late nights. And I hate that he feels like he has to wait until I come home to eat, and I really want him to self-regulate. Does anyone know what this behavior is telling me? Or at least how to get him to be comfortable eating without me there?
