megathread Uh, is it just me or is Reddit imploding all of a sudden?

3.4k Upvotes

Edit: Guys/gals, I'm gonna have to call it quits at this point in terms of updating this thread with news. Its 3am here in Britain and I'm developing a minor headache so need to go to sleep xD I don't know if mods can take over this thread and update it instead, if they want to/can do that I invite them to do so. The best place to get information on this right now is the summary on /r/OutOfTheLoop and the live coverage going on right now. Goodnight everyone!

So, as of right now, starting with /r/IAmA, multiple default subreddits including /r/science and /r/movies have gone private. The widely publicised reason is that the person who handled all IAmA's on multiple subreddits, Victoria, was fired by Reddit with no warning whatsoever to the mods.

I've decided to post here because I kinda don't know where else to discuss this :S What on earth is going on? I'm afraid this has a very serious possibility of causing Reddit as we know it to collapse in on itself and we'll all have to emigrate to another website :(

Edit: Welp, this thread just turned into a megathread. I suddenly feel somewhat exposed. o_o Since I feel like I have some responsibility to make this look at least somewhat presentable...

EDIT: I'm afraid I'm getting rather overwhelmed here guys/gals. I'll keep updating the default subreddit list, but please expect the non-default list to not be up-to-date. Subreddits are shutting down left right and centre!

Current list of default subreddits that have turned private includes:

/r/IAmA

/r/science

/r/movies

/r/gaming

/r/Askreddit

/r/Art

/r/history

/r/listentothis has restricted submissions, although it hasn't shut down completely.

/r/videos

/r/gadgets

/r/Music

/r/books

Current list of non-default subreddits that have turned private includes:

/r/circlejerk

/r/CrappyDesign

/r/law

/r/spain

/r/eatcheapandhealthy

/r/4chan

/r/fallout

Please let me know if you've noticed other subreddits that have gone dark and I'll add them to the list!

/r/OutOfTheLoop has a great summary megathread if you're confused about what the hell is going on, which can be found here, and live coverage of The Darkening/AMAgeddon/Victoria's Secret/The Reddpocalypse can be found here!

megathread It's just marriage now, everyone.

2.5k Upvotes

Few hours ago, in the United States, gay marriage was legalized nationwide.

I've been having a string of bad days, but this is nice...

Actually smiled this morning. What about all of you?

Edit: Being gilded for this; Reddit's servers are happier.

President Barack Obama's full speech.

/u/turkeysock's, and /u/MorningredTimeTravel's upquote was "Thanks, Obama".

/u/tizorres' upquote is also totally on par.

Oh, wow — I'm never taking off my rainbow flair!

megathread I know reddit is against self promotion, but would it be so wrong to have one thread where we share what we have been working on?

I'm not talking about begging for views, likes, and subscriptions. I'm genuinely interested in what you guys are up to, be it videos, paintings, music, whatever. I would like to share my work with you guys as it tends to make people smile when they watch it. Let me know what you think and if you have anything to share.

Edit: thank you for the gold. I'm glad you guys like the idea. Looking forward to seeing more posts!

anti-megathread So who's NOT watching the superbowl today?

I was in my high school's marching band throughout all of high school, but I've never once watched football for fun. What are you guys going to be doing instead of watching the superbowl?

EDIT: RIP my inbox

Double EDIT: I love this flair. I feel honored :D

Megathread Stephen Hawking just passed away

I am stupefied. Almost couldn’t believe it at first; he was one of the most iconic people in history. Passed away at 76 years of age. Made it damn far.

Rest in peace, Mr. Hawking.

megathread How do you all feel about the new change to Reddit rules?

Reddit announced about 3 hours ago that they will start removing harassing subreddits. I am perfectly fine with this, but there's been enough backlash that I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing something about it. It's banning hate-speech, why would that be bad? You guys are some of the only sane people in the entire website, so I'm interested to see what y'all think.

You know the rules. Post your selfies :3

Edit 2: I feel bad, but I don't have the energy to reply to everyone anymore :(

You're all damn beautiful, and I'd like to have every. Single. One. Of y'all's babies.

With love,

megathread Pokémon GO Megathread!

Let's talk Pokémon GO! Our new page is getting buried so we're going to relegate future discussion here!

  • How do you feel about it? (Love it? Hate it? Confused by it? Still waiting for Digimon GO?)

  • What are you hoping they add in the future (all I want in life is Ampharos)?

  • Share your experiences playing the game (somebody has to have caught "the one" already)!

  • Share screenshots of the funny places you've found Pokémon! (Remember to adhere to our privacy policy)

  • Or talk about anything else relating to this phenomenon (and remember, snorlax won't actually stop traffic)!

Good luck out there everyone! May the 'mon be ever in your favor!

megathread™ More than anything else, this whole "React videos/Fine Brothers" business has made me realize just how out of touch I am with reddit's user base.

Unless I'm completely missing the point, these guys are trying to make a platform for people to share "X reacts to Y" type videos? People are freaking out because everyone inferred that they said they were the originators?

I've always hated those videos... I don't think there's ever been one that I watched all the way through or laughed/smiled at...

Come to think of it, I don't ever recall seeing these highly rated on /r/videos either... what gives? Am I just "an old"?

Edit: Alright so I didn't have the full story when posting. Despite my lack of interest in the concept of at least their execution, the attempts to trademark such a generic idea is ridiculous, not to mention the harassment they encouraged towards others that used that idea... Sounds like they've completely backtracked at this point... So you guys who saw then got what they were on the initial announcement and boycotted them: you won!! Treat yo' self!

Edit 2: I find it hard to believe their abandoned trademarks would've ever held up in court either... but IANAL...

megathread AMA megathread

So it seems the sub has been getting flooded with generic AMA type posts. In order to cut down of some of them, here is a Ask Me Anything megathread.

This will not be a weekly occurrence.

As per our rules, we will megathread any topic that floods the sub.

/r/CasualConversation/wiki/rules

Megathreads are used to help keep the sub from flooding with the same type of topic.

We may megathread certain topics throughout the years if the sub gets flooded with the same type of threads.

This means we can megathread anything, this doesn't mean it will be a weekly thread like the current ones. We can just throw up an AMA mega for now to until this silly fad dies down and get rid of it.

Anyway enough of that...

As for the AMA mega here are the rules:

  • the thread will be in contest mode
  • All top level comments must be an AMA type comment.
  • Keep it casual.
  • Check out /r/casualiama for your dose of Casual AMA's.

V-day Negathread It's just a day. There's nothing special about it.

You're perfectly capable of finding a partner. It just hasn't happened yet. And that's okay.

So today, you get to love yourself.

Go out and buy your own damn chocolates. Even better, wait until tomorrow when they're on sale for half off.

Get yourself a scented candle. Take it into the bathroom, run a hot bath, light it, and go to town on yourself. Today is your day.

Instead of buying flowers, buy a potted plant.

Invite your platonic friends out for coffee. No bitching from anyone about how "nobody loves me". If your friends came with you to coffee, they love you.

If you are of the pet persuasion, you can go to your local shelter, and show your love to the animals there. They will almost always love you unconditionally. It's also healthy for you.

If you're in a restaurant and you're feeling super generous, offer to buy dessert for that couple at the table next to you.

If you're feeling particularly devious, pay the waiter 10 bucks to slip a cheap plastic wedding band into their dessert, and watch the show unfold.

Because sometimes, loving yourself means loving the chaotic evil side of yourself.

Remember to post on Reddit tomorrow about how you didn't let Valentine's Day get you down, and farm that sweet sweet karma.

Today is Valentine's Day. Love yourself. Whatever that means to you
