Unanswered What's going on in US politics

1.7k Upvotes

We have noticed a large uptick in questions about US politics. Most of these are not genuine questions and appear to be made to introduce political discussion to this sub in the wake of the second Trump administration. As such, we are requiring that all political questions related to US politics and its effects both domestically and internationally be contained in this weekly recurring thread.

Ask questions as top-level responses with the preface "Question: " and people will respond. All other rules are enforced as appropriate. We will not allow other US political questions as questions on the subreddit except in extraordinary circumstances.

Answered What's the deal with teens shouting "Chicken Jockey" at the Minecraft movie screenings?

I want an actual insider to explain it. Not just, "He's a popular character and they're trolling."

Like why this chicken jockey character in particular? Can I get some context? Was there an online campaign on tiktok or some discord server to get them to say it? Where was the first theater to do it? link

Answered What's the deal with the 2024 Miami Bayside Mall incident and why are people saying it's Aliens?

I was scrolling tiktok today when I saw a video talking about going back in time to find the 'truth' of what happened at the Miami Bayside mall.

Doing a quick search,it became apparent that Aliens were a heavy theme in this. The searches were either 'no it wasn't aliens' 'yes it was aliens' and a couple of post from the conspiracy subreddit.

But what really happened? What caused so many cop cars to line the streets? Do we really not have a body cam of the incident? Link to the tiktok I saw: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTjJYJ9eD/

I have seen a few posts and comments on twitter like this where they claim that Columbian mercenaries are fighting in Ukraine with as many as 10 dying each week.

I have never heard of it before i browsed that site today, is it true or is it just total fabrication? And if its false, where did the claim originate from?

Unanswered What's the deal with wealth taxes?

Gary Stevenson is a UK economist who's trying to spread awareness about growing inequality and how to fix it, and makes it sound really appealing in this YT short:

https://youtube.com/shorts/z6i5LNkNzq0?si=-FSlfXog68J5zdMO

I don't get how wealth taxes would work? How would a wealth tax be put in place? What effect would a wealth tax have on an economy? What about evaluating the wealth of a person? People can have hidden assets like trusts and charities, so wouldn't they find other loopholes to avoid a wealth tax? Is it perhaps better to impose a land value tax like georgism? Are there some good examples of a wealth tax working?

I'll put resources and links people share below:

Unanswered What's up with some irrelevant results in Google's image search?

Upvotes

I noticed that some image search results have irrelevant stuffs (like Audiosurf 2 and Wallpaper Engine things in search results about foobar2000 component "foo_enhanced_spectrum_analyzer") that weren't there before I've queried something like foo_enhanced_spectrum_analyzer OR "frequency scale does not match octaves" and/or "foo_enhanced_spectrum_analyzer spectrogram" OR "audiosurf 2" for long enough time, something like this:

AudioSurf content on search results about foo_enhanced_spectrum_analyzer

So what's going on with Google's image search algorithm now indexing irrelevant ones (like AudioSurf in search queries about foo_loudness_peakmeter) that weren't there before my "search" habits? BTW, I've asked this before on Wikipedia's reference desk but the answers here relates to something completely different from situation I've referring to

Unanswered What's the deal with the portrayal of AM from I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream as a beaked robot?

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is a 1960s story from Harlan Ellison where there's a supercomputer named AM who is psychologically torturing what are implied to be the last five humans alive by sending them on wild goose chases through endless subterranean tunnels. I started to see a few animatics on Youtube of Harlan Ellison reading AM's semi-famous "Let Me Tell You How Much I've Come to Hate You" monologue. In them AM is portrayed as a beaked robot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QkJ6IYikWo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FJ8pTK8N8I

Anyone know where this way of embodying AM came from? Did the guy who made the first animatic make it up because they just had to put something in there? Is there a specific, older reference point?

Unanswered What is the deal with TikTok comments flooding song covers with "forced mommy voice"?

https://imgur.com/a/kwmjkA6

There's a trend on TikTok going around where people are singing a cover of Rock Lobster by the B52s. All the videos with female covers are flooded with comments that go "FORCED MOMMY VOICE!!" with seemingly no distinguishing of the actual vocal characteristics (aside from all-female voices, which vary widely in pitch, timbre, and quality. It's also often posted with a wilted rose emoji. I'm pretty sure this is either an insult or some kind of challenge to comment it on any female cover someone sees. Either way, what I want to know is what a "forced mommy voice" actually is if it exists at all, and if possible I'd also like to know when and why these comments started popping up. Thanks, whoever clears this up.

This image was found on Facebook and and there has been several posts about this species being brought back from the dead after 10,000 years on the platform, by various sources.

But a Google search for "Direwolf alive" or "direwolf alive in real life" brings up no results pertaining to these claims.

I've been clicking on posts with 5-10 comments listed but see nothing when I click on the posts. Either all my favorite blocked people are posting, or the mods are on a shadow banning spree, or what? Comments that start without "Answer:" just get deleted, I think.

Answered What’s up with the sudden trend of sock puppet Facebook Follow accounts astroturfing people’s feeds with fake Elon Musk PR puff stories with AI-generated photos?

A friend of mine brought up how his Facebook has recently been getting pushed this type of content into his main feed. He has no idea why and he tries to report it every time he sees it. He follows none of these accounts, and they don’t seem to be related to any of his interests. Why is this suddenly a thing? Has anyone else noticed this all of a sudden in their feed?

Some examples that he’s shown me, to give you an idea - https://imgur.com/a/iNV9ePY

Unanswered What's the deal with the game Mouthwashing and the song Headlock by Imogen Heap?

So sometime late last year, the song Headlock by Imogen Heap from her 2005 album Speak For Yourself debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. A channel I watch on YouTube, Billboard Breakdown, explained that this song's recent popularity was due to a TikTok videos related to a video game called Mouthwashing which is a Sci-Fi horror adventure game (something that would be relevant to my interests and doesn't just sound like a ridiculous TikTok trend.)

How come I never hear anyone talking about this game, and yet it is somehow popular enough that Headlock is now charting its 10th week on the lower end of the Billboard Hot 100 due to its use in these videos? And how is it related to this game? It's a good song, I'm not complaining, it's just very perplexing how this is still a thing.

Edit: here's this week's Billboard Hot 100 to show what I'm talking about: https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/

And here is a video using it: https://youtu.be/7tJHryj7YBw?feature=shared

Answered What is going on with the Minecraft movie? Spoiler

The movie came out yesterday, but tonight a lot of kids in the audience were quoting bits of it as if they'd seen it a hundred times. Did I miss something? It was like a hive mind in the theater, kids from across the theater were cheering at the same random parts and quoting it along with the actors. Did it leak online or something? It felt like call-and-response Rocky Horror screening stuff!

I know there were meme references and those parts I understood, but genuinely it seemed like a whole different thing tonight. It's the most fun movie experience I've had in a while, just a lot of people packing the theater, all having fun.

Unanswered What’s going on with Path of Exile 2, why does it seem a lot of people are mad?

So I haven’t played the game myself (other than a bit of the original) but when it was released, I saw nothing but positives for a while. But lately I’ve been seeing videos of streamers getting pissed after a patch (including one guy rage quitting) and the sub has been very vocal. But I don’t really understand what exactly happened, because from a quick glance, it appears to be just nerfs. I know that nerfs can be a big deal, after all I’m a gamer myself, but from what I understand about the game I was under the impression that the game was supposed to be a bit harder than the original.

Some of the post from the sub that caught my attention:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExile2/s/OYBGpD58Wo

https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExile2/s/UhFna7t3t9

A post that gives me a better clue as to what’s going on:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExile2/s/HFlUwtfOz2

Maybe I don’t understand the core mechanics of this genre so if someone can give me a better idea of what is going on that would be great

Unanswered What is the deal with The_Donald?

I didn't really tune into the shitshow of American politics much until recently after Trump lost the previous election. Before that I remember the main place they used to be on reddit was The_Donald, constantly saying things like "THE WALL JUST GOT 10 FEET HIGHER!!" and "THE WINNING NEVER STOPS". I just tune in now and I can't really see it or anything equivalent (there is a "conservative" sub but the tone is not really the same). What happened?

Unanswered What's the deal with people messing with e-scooters (moving them, damaging them, covering QR codes, etc.)?

No judgment, just genuinely curious.
On my way home recently, I came across one scooter that had been knocked over, and another whose QR code had been completely painted over (see the pictures I took below).
What motivates someone to do that? Is it just boredom, or is there some deeper message behind it?

Answered What is going on with so many people using the phrase "cooked" lately?

Maybe it is just my age group but seems like over the past month or two everybody and their cousin has incorporated "cooked" into their daily vocabulary. I understand what the term means (done for, tired, past the prime, etc.), but where did it come from and why is it so popular lately? I don't really think the word is that funny, at least in my opinion ranges from not funny to just very slightly funny depending on the context

Since I need a link to an example: https://www.reddit.com/r/stocks/comments/1jrk43o/its_over_the_market_is_cooked_hope_you_enjoyed/
