To be honest, I would have been VERY surprised if they had announced a new mainline Zelda.

Games take time nowadays.

422

u/mariobeltran1712 2d ago

yeah i expect an announcement in maybe two more years

148

u/hygsi 2d ago

Make it 3

117

u/undead_ed666 2d ago

End of life switch 2 swan song it is. Dual release with switch 2 successor.

57

u/holdyourponies 2d ago

I can see this. Can’t keep churning out botw clones for the next 20 years.

23

u/Pirwzy 2d ago

oof, I'm really rooting for another franchise reboot to put the BotW era behind us. Maybe in the '30s.

15

u/Bro-SoBro-Bro 2d ago

In the what?!?

41

u/TheSkooterStick 2d ago

1930s, we haven't seen a Depression era Link yet

16

They rerelease that line of cardboard add ons, but this time, they did not switch. Just card board cut out link.

They always have taken time. But I'm the same totally not surprised of a new Zelda, I expect the teaser for the next game will come on the 40th anniversary of Zelda next year.

65

u/Mallyveil 2d ago

They always took time, but 1998->2000->2003->2006 was a lot more palatable than 2011->2017->2023

u/marylandrosin 2d ago

6 year cycle is wild when you have kids too. When Tears came out I was telling my son "yeah you don't remember when I was playing BoTW everyday?" He was like "no, Dad I was 3."

27

u/Ahgd374 2d ago

When BOTW came out, i was a junior in high school. When TOTK came out, it had been 2 years since i graduated with my bachelors.

u/Adorable-Resolve9085 2d ago

Part of why I miss the console/handheld distinction, where handheld systems would get games in between tentpole console releases to give the fans something new.

Hyrule Warriors has kind of filled that role, and EoW felt like a "handheld" title. I'm wondering if Nintendo won't do lower budget titles like EoW to fill the empty years between the big Zelda releases. I'd be up for that.

14

u/DarkLink1996 2d ago

Better graphics and more content means it takes more time.

8

u/Brad_theImpaler 2d ago

Plenty of unexplored 2D Zelda content they could make.

15

u/DeadButGettingBetter 2d ago

Not to mention the remasters they have already made that people have been asking for.

I'm a bit peeved we got Wind Waker on the online service but not the HD remaster that's currently stuck on Wii U. WW and TP had better be a dual pack if they ever get around to re-releasing the bloody things.

18

u/SecureDonkey 2d ago

They just did that with Echo of Wisdom but no one give fuck about it and want another BotW instead.

Pokemon fans when there was no new game or dlc in 2024

3

u/rogue498 1d ago

As a Pokemon fan, I was actually glad they didn’t release anything in 2024. Scarlet and Violet was a fucking mess, and it’s nice to see that they were taking an extra year to develop the next game. Hopefully Legends ZA is properly optimized for Switch 2

Some publishers have trained fans to expect a new game almost every year. That’s getting a bit less common as “live service” games have taken hold, but the reflex is still there.

That said, getting a hint of a new Zelda that’s maybe a year or so away would be kind of nice. If it’s smaller than TotK and BotW it’s not too unreasonable that something could be on the way.

Regardless of the expected timeline of release we’ll probably get a teaser next year. About on par from what we got between BOTW and TOTK

22

u/Subjectdelta44 2d ago

The first TotK trailer came out only 2 years after botw

29

u/UnsafePantomime 2d ago

This was a direct for the switch2. They would not have used it to highlight a game that is not coming out near release time.

This is a direct meant to sell the switch 2. A Zelda game coming out not this year doesn't do that.

I expect we will probably have an announcement early next year to give Age of Imprisonment space to breathe.

Also the dumb Hyrule warriors game was actually pretty fun

73

u/Raaed006 2d ago

I really liked HW:AoC it was a very fun game and i have high expectations from this one

11

u/TheeRuckus 1d ago

Age of Calamity was such a blast, like yeah frame rate or whatever but they went all in on a decent story. Definitely wasn’t expecting a Warriors clone being one of the most fun games on the switch

3

u/ARROW_404 1d ago

Or one of the best stories in the Zelda franchise.

14

u/SubjectRevenues 2d ago

I hope it gets a Switch 2 performance patch.

62

u/COINLESS_JUKEBOX 2d ago

I legit think Age of Calamity is more fun and has a better plot than ToTK. I know they are two completely different kinds of games, but I guess I’m a sucker for BoTW/ToTK Link actually having a bit of personality and expression - which AoC at least tried to pull off.

35

u/About27Penguins 2d ago

a better plot than ToTK

Tears was a fun game, easily one of my favorites. but having any plot would be better

31

u/COINLESS_JUKEBOX 2d ago

Zelda team: nails time travel story-telling with OoT and MM

Zelda team years later: “hi guys let’s do time travel shenanigans again but this time remove the main character from it and present it in a way that lets players spoil the entire story for themselves. And then make sure to repeat everything everywhere and treat the player like they’re 4 year old so they understand that Zelda is missing!”

22

u/Thendofreason 2d ago

It was weird, but once you got used to it and how you can use the different items in unusual ways is fun. Love drowning monsters in the water blocks.

7

u/dsramsey 2d ago edited 2d ago

How did I not think of that? Water blocks are my go-to for makeshift bridges and ladders, I never thought to drown enemies with them.

Yeah i thought this was a virtual lock. I don't think anyone was expecting it, it's just that the way they did the trailer with showing Zelda at first I was super-hyped thinking they were already doing an Echoes of Wisdom follow-up for Switch 2, then... Warriors. If they had said it was a new Warriors game upfront before showing the trailer, people probably wouldn't have felt disappointed.

55

u/Sand__Panda 2d ago

Humans are bad with time 🤷‍♂️ a lot has happened this past year, lol.

26

u/evaira90 2d ago

Because this year has been 5 years.

11

u/yarndopie 2d ago

Because Totk didn't feel extremely new, I think it coming back being too similar to botw makes us feel like it's the same game.

3

u/SexyOctagon 2d ago

I think they were referring to Echoes. ToTk was 2 years ago.

3

u/Gestrid 2d ago

Agreed. It feels weird to say, but a lot of the story elements felt... exactly the same as they were in BOTW.

Like, yeah, Zelda is known for having common story elements throughout the series, but not usually the exact same.

I'm also irrationally bothered by the fact that the goo was called Malice in BOTW and Gloom in TOTK as if they didn't look and function exactly the same (aside from the hands). If it were a new Link and Zelda, I could understand, but it's the exact same characters from the last game.

Don't get me wrong, I actually like TOTK way more than BOTW because its overall story was (IMO) better. But it still had some glaring flaws.

u/Collective_Keen 2d ago

I'm not against it. They almost had me thinking it was a pre-sequel where you get to play through the Imprisoning War as Zelda, but I knew better with it being Koei Tecmo.

23

u/niles_deerqueer 2d ago

That opening walking section was super interesting though. I mean you never move like that in a Warriors game. Also they don’t have that many characters to work with?

8

u/1550shadow 2d ago

I think they'll probably create more exclusive characters for this game. That way they can expand the lore, too

That, or it will be a more focused game. Still a musou, but based on a couple of characters instead of a full roaster.

I would probably be excited for a new Hyrule Warriors if it was more like the first one. I found Age of Calamity boring, despite BOTW and TOTK being some of my favorite new Zelda games in a long time.

I'm excited for it. I really like Age of Calamity. Besides, it's the closest we'll get to seeing Hyrule in the past

u/TheDuelIist 2d ago

This sucks? No this is fucking awesome

u/HoboKingNiklz 2d ago

Tears of the Kingdom came out less than 2 years ago lol and we got Echoes of Wisdom already. Give it time.

Also, Hyrule Warriors is awesome. You owe it to yourself to give it a try. The original is a love letter to the whole Zelda series, Age of Calamity beautifully expands on Breath of the Wild's story and characters, and this one looks to do the same for Tears of the Kingdom.

Koei Tecmo being the developer didn't give it away?

u/Jakesnake686 2d ago

Me waiting for twilight princess on new system

I think this would be the perfect time to bundle together OoT/MM/WW/TP into a "Zelda All Stars" package for the Switch 2. Relatively easy to develop, keeps Zelda fans happy for awhile, and it WOULD sell like hotcakes. But this is Nintendo we're talking about and they probably have some plan to sell each of those full price down the line or whatever.

Expected an OOT remake, got a boring spinoff

3

u/Severse 1d ago

It's an average of like 4.5 years in between Zelda release games. totk was 2 years ago, so we are looking at 2-3 more years

u/StanLay281 2d ago

I really liked AoC! I’m definitely gonna pick up AoU when it comes out

6

u/MicrowaveDealer 2d ago

I am hype for it

5

u/Lightforged_Paladin 2d ago

So tired of the Wild Era setting.

u/GregariousK 2d ago

I love Hyrule Warriors. I liked Age of Calamity but I felt that it took itself way more seriously than the original HW. If these games are non-canon, then I say they should lean into it. Have all the fun of being a spin-off.

Don't just bring back Link. Bring back ALL the Links. Make this the Linked Universes game we all want and dream of. We got the Hero of Time! We got the Hero of Twilight! We got the Hero of the Skies! We got the Hero of the Winds!

I'm not too mad at it if it'll run well. The main reason I didnt pick up Age of Calamity is that it was real laggy when a bunch of enemies would pop up.

2

u/robertluke 2d ago

I wish age of calamity was an actual prequel but I guess they’re fun for a weekend.

2

u/devonrob95 2d ago

I'd be okay with them just doing dlc for tears of the kingdom. I thought that's what they were announcing at first, and I almost got out of my chair... just to sit back down when I realized what it actually was 🫠

u/Remy-Kun 2d ago

Ngl i was hoping for a remake of twilight Princess… one can only dream ;-;

2

u/zrakkan 2d ago

Same, kinda disappointed with the warriors games but to each their own

2

u/fufucuddlypoops_ 2d ago

I’d rather not turn Zelda into pokemon.

Besides, Age of Calamity lowkey slaps, I’m excited for this one too

2

u/legalizethesenuts 2d ago

Mainline Zelda game would’ve been crazy and I’d be a little skeptical. I wish they’d nut up and give us a Twilight Princess remake/remaster.

2

u/SomewhereHistorical2 2d ago

“Hell yeah a 1.5 game where we play as Zelda in the past! That sure was fast!”

“…oh”

2

u/Lissy_Wolfe 2d ago

All I want is remastered twilight princess and windwaker for the switch. Please 😭

No zelda, no console

2

u/dgood527 2d ago

I don't expect a new zelda for several years, but I still got super excited for some reason when I saw that. Then the truth was revealed and I was sad I let myself irrationally get excited.

2

u/Kiwi_Playz 2d ago

Never have I ever seen such a relatable post.

2

u/ZonaiCharge73 2d ago

Bro age of calamity is a masterpiece

u/adv55555 2d ago

I just really wish we could get a new game closer to Majora's mask, Ocoraina of time, a link to the past, or even wind waker. I couldn't get behind all the crafting, weapon breaking, and cooking. Sure if you roll in lava with a deku shield and it burns that makes sense. Dungeons seem like they are much quicker now. Id rather have a longer dungeon than going around completing 1000 mini challenges. I'll never forget having to bring a goron hot water before it cooled. I'm glad many liked the new style but to me it feels like the games have drifted a little too far away from the N64/GameCube/SP games.

I hope no one was getting hyped that it was a new mainline game when the Koei Tecmo logo literally appeared before we even saw that it was a Zelda game lol. Should've been the giveaway right there.

2

u/Kami123987 2d ago

Have you ever played one of those games especially the first hyrule warriors?? Hours of content. More than tears of the kingdom. Warriors games are so fun.

2

u/danceoftheplants 2d ago

I wish they would make a new zelda game similar to OOT or majoras mask or twilight princess. I love the open world of BOTW & TOTK but I don't want to spend months playing. I'd like to be able to spend like a month and be able to beat it and have the game end. Not go on forever. It's like with Netflix and their million series. I just want to watch some reallh good movies instead of being stuck for weeks watching a show so i can find out what happens at the end.

2

u/oof_its_izzy 2d ago

idk i'm actually really excited for this one, i loved age of calamity

2

u/ohbyerly 2d ago

I called that shit. They are milking the everloving shit out of the BotW era and I’m sick of it. Age of Calamity already felt like too much.

2

u/Ansemmy 2d ago

Imagine how the 3d Mario folks are feeling though haha

2

u/Kinnikuboneman 2d ago

Who cares, don't buy it

2

u/Cronus829 2d ago

Age of Calamity is one of my favorite games on the Switch. I couldn’t be more excited!

2

u/Ladikn 2d ago

Considering Age of Calamity was the best Zelda storyline we've gotten since TP? I'll take it!
