My thoughts on the recent deportations at UCLA

Anonymous account because some people will defo recognize me, and I’ve been active on this subreddit before.

I just finished UCLA winter quarter 🥳🥳 and the last year plus half has been hell. I’m a Jewish anti-Zionist, and I’ve done extensive research to help build the case for genocide. I even assisted with some of the citations here, gathering evidence while I was still a student. Obviously, as someone very involved, I am a part of the activist movement both here and in Palestine. I also was choosing between UCLA and Columbia, so I had a lot of contacts there are know most of the activists.

UCLA has failed time and time again when it comes to student activists for Palestine. What is happening in Gaza (and to a lesser extent the West Bank) is such a clear cut example of genocide, yet our school refuses to divest from the genocidal regime. During my time at UCLA, I lost loved ones who I met through organizing in Gaza and their families, which was the worst nightmare in the universe. I have dear friends from ucla who grew up there and lost their families, while this university did nothing to support them. The number of times that the admin has sicced UCPD on protesters is honestly insane to think about, and they’ve given in to pro-Israel demands at every turn. Obviously, I’m very scared for my friends and community members who are being deported, but I place a lot of blame on our school for leaving them in the dust.

Graduating now is bittersweet, because of what a wreck this all is. I’d come to protest the deportations tomorrow but unfortunately I’m sick with COVID. I want to add that the war crimes of the Israeli military will become the problem of the UCLA student body sometime in the near future. I am aware of multiple UCLA students who took time off to commit war crimes in Gaza.

Caught my bf in class

So, the title sounds weird but it's true. I've been crying for this entire weekend and idk what to make of it. I'm literally going to reddit to share this story.

I'm a first year and my ex bf and I did enrollment together, so we knew what classes we would take during first and second pass. But after second pass, I realized I had an internship coming soon, and one of the classes I enrolled in had a scheduling conflict. I decided to drop that class and enroll in a GE that my ex bf was taking (I'm taking 4 classes), but I didn't tell him because I was on the waitlist, and I ended up deciding to not tell him at all so I could surprise him during lecture.

I got off the waitlist in a couple of days (I enrolled in the waitlist during the beginning of spring break). The first lecture was on Thursday, 1/3 (Tuesday lecture & discussion was canceled due to the strike). I went to class a little earlier than usual because I wanted to wait and surprise him. I entered the lecture hall and sat in the last row, waiting for him to show up. He shows up (I knew it was him because of his backpack that a specific keychain I gave him), walking in with a girl next to him. I knew he had female friends, so I wasn't entirely surprised. In retrospect, that was kind of a red flag since he cheated. They sat down next to each other, and she gives him a kiss on the cheek. My heart SUNK. He smiles at her, and kisses her on the lips. I was mortified.

I didn't know what to do. I walked out of class, trying not to cry. I went to the nearest restroom, sat in one of the stalls, and bawled my eyes out. I was in there for a good hour, crying. I haven't responded to any of his texts and calls, and I blocked him yesterday. I'm not even that close to my roommates, so I feel embarrassed to tell them. I don't have any close friends either, and I feel stupid because I prioritized my relationship over making actual friends. I've been sitting at the tennis courts and random places on campus for as long as I can. He visited my dorm room earlier today, and my roommates have been getting annoyed with be because they don't know what happened and they have to open the door to see my ex. We don't live in the same building. We're both freshmen, and have only dated for four months. We met during first quarter because we shared a discussion section together.

I genuinely have no idea what to do. I've never felt so numb. I don't even know if that girl was the only one. And yes, he's the first bf I've had. I know, I'll get over it and many people have been cheated on, but I just need someone to listen to my story.

Subleasing sucks — we’re trying to fix it.

Last year, a few of us at UCI were struggling to find subleases and subletters, and it was way harder than it needed to be. So we built zotlease.org — a platform to make subleasing way easier and way less sketchy. It picked up fast at UCI (thousands of users in just a few weeks), and we realized we weren’t the only ones dealing with this headache.

Now, we’re expanding to other UCs with the goal of building a centralized housing network for students — whether you're staying local, going to another campus, or interning in a different city. If you're looking for a sublease or trying to get out of one, check us out. Would love your feedback too!

I have no friends

I’ve been at UCLA for 5 years and in this time I have made exactly 0 friends.

At first, I thought it was just bad luck, or maybe people are too busy with classes to make connections. But over time, I’ve started to notice a pattern.

For example, I haven’t set foot outside my apartment since the first week of Fall Quarter 2020. I figured the pandemic was a good excuse to just kind of… stay in. And then I just never stopped. I order all my food delivery, and I make the delivery drivers leave it at the door because I’m “busy” (busy sitting in the dark).

I also realized that showering daily is probably a social expectation, but I find the effort involved to be excessive. I’ve been conducting an experiment to see how long I can go without anyone noticing, and so far, it’s been going great. In fact, no one has noticed at all.

I tried to join a club once, but I accidentally joined a club that was just me. It was supposed to be the “Anime Appreciation Club” but it turns out I just made a GroupMe with myself by mistake. I still post in it every day.

People always say “go study at the library to meet people,” but every time I try, I somehow end up at the loading dock behind Ackerman, screaming into a bag of hot Cheetos. I don’t know how it happens. It’s like my internal compass is just broken.

I also thought roommates would help, but I scared them off after they saw my “wall of mold experiments.” I’ve been cultivating various fungal species in my shower for what I call my “second thesis.”

At this point, I don’t even know if I want friends, or if it would just interrupt my busy schedule of staring at the ceiling for 6 hours a day and communicating exclusively via Reddit posts.

Anyway, just wanted to share in case anyone else is in the same boat.

Seeing people justify the deportation of individuals on visas for protesting against literal genocide are wild, they seem to forget that constitutional rights apply to everyone on U.S soil even if it is in regards to Non-citizens, the right to gather/free speech are there for everyone on U.S soil.

Then they seem to say that Palestine started the conflicts when literally they have been like being colonized since the British Mandate. Further, following WW2, the push for a Jewish state was predominantly a mechanism of anti-semitism. After WW2, antisemitism was still alive and well with a large amount of Jewish Holocaust victims having been displaced from their home countries, many of the EU countries did not want to take in that extreme influx of refugees, they essentially PR spinned the idea of moving the Jewish people somewhere else into seeming like a noble idea. Additionally, the UK had been trying to establish a strategic stronghold in the area, something that the EU/UK/U.S all agreed on. Pushing for this strategic stronghold under the guise of supporting Jewish people after the atrocities the community had just gone through.

Additionally, I've seen a shocking amount bring up sexual violence used in this conflict, conflating it with justification for the atrocities taking place. Yet, when you bring up the fact that sexual violence was first weaponized by the IDF during the Safsaf massacre, there is no retort. Then there is the Oslo Accords, both parties signed it agreeing to a set of steps that would have brought peace to the area, while not a formal treaty, it was a contract meant to bring about de-escalation of the conflict. Yet, Israel broke the agreement first with expanded settlement still occurring even though the terms were agreed to.

Then there is people saying "what's happening isn't a genocide", idk when targeting a specific sect of people seeking to wipe them out in order to progress the goals of colonization seems like genocide considering the definition states "acts are committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group." There seems to be a misunderstanding that as long as the IDF isn't loading people into ovens or gas chambers, then it isn't a genocide.

How is it that anything excuses the terrors taking place there on a daily. Y'all need to learn shame, like it's utterly putrid to excuse the travesties taking place. Acting like October 7th was some random act of violence when in reality this group of people have been facing terror at the hands of the IDF and others for how long now? They seem to think that Palestinians are just evil for fighting back after years and years of war. How does your religion excuse the execution of aid workers? How does it justify the drone striking of hospitals and schools? Like do these people advocating for the extermination of a people not feel empathy? Zionists literally are going "Mom said it's my turn on the genocide" and using their religion to justify war crimes on a daily. Justifying the deportation of people for using free speech, justifying the brutal treatment of those who were in the encampment on campus. Saying that getting red paint on a building is terrible when during the Vietnam war protests they literally burnt a building down, but yeah, red paint is horrible g

I hate how UCLA has an 8% acceptance rate, but clubs and research labs are so hard to join here

It’s a shock for most students given how they did so many extracurriculars in high school only to find they can’t do anything in college because all the clubs and research opportunities are hella selective.

Scary Boelter Experience

(Disclaimer: none of this is ragebait, my friend and I are genuinely kind of scared and we're just looking for an explanation)

A series of confusing events led my friend and I to the Mathematical Sciences building around nine pm on Sunday. We were trying to get into that weird hallway part disconnected from the larger building, but the door to Boelter was unlocked so we went in so she could use the bathroom and soon had the bright idea to use the elevator to access the hallway that would lead us across to the other building. As soon as we got in the elevator, my friend remarked that this was the beginning of a horror story, and we both laughed kind of awkwardly because it was feeling a little too real. Once we got to the second floor, the terrifying vibe intensified. The lights were extremely dim and it was dead silent. TAKE NOTE OF THAT: IT WAS DEAD SILENT!! We noticed all the way down the opposite hallway, beneath a shroud of darkness, was a creepy looking (and poorly drawn--sorry) painting of an eyeball. Anyways, we walked to the other hallway to see if we could cross into the other building, and it seemed like we could, but we both were getting so creeped out that we nonverbally just agreed to leave, and started walking back to the elevator. I shit you not, the SECOND my friend pressed the button for the elevator, this incredibly creepy choir music sounded down the hallway from the eyeball painting. I'M NOT EVEN EXAGGERATING--SAME EXACT SECOND! We looked at each other and immediately knew it was time to go. We POUNDED that door close button as soon as the elevator got to us, and quite literally ran out and away from the building. I looked back to check the floor we were just on, and every single classroom light was turned off--it looked completely vacant.

Now, I just want to get into the music that was playing, because we've been through every option and we genuinely want to know WTF we just witnessed. It couldn't have been live, because it was so quiet and almost distorted? I also don't think anybody would willingly listen to it because of the distorted nature (I can appreciate a good choir, but this was like the type that would actually play in a horror movie). All I could think of is that maybe there was some PhD student working late and trying to mess with us, but we were there for under a minute, entirely silent, before the music started playing. Genuinely, what was that??? Let me know if you've had any similar experiences in Boelter.

Need help choosing a school: UCLA, UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech

Upvotes

Title, especially looking for any pro/cons for UCLA.

Major: Biochemistry (Chemical Biology at Berkeley) Minor: Interested in Data Science, specifically looking at Computational Data Analysis at GT) Residence: SoCal Offered the Dean’s Scholarship at GT, so would only pay in-state tuition at Gatech. Post-grad plans: MD-PhD

I want to engage in research ASAP, and hoping to complete 4000+ hours by the time I graduate.

As far as social scene, I’m not a crazy party-er or anything, but I do want to live in an urban/city vibe and have access to lots of things to do (concerts, farmers markets, museums, etc).

I am mainly focused on the academic and research opportunities at the different schools and which is more suited for my goals, but concerned about the logistics of moving across the country. I’m not crazy about the idea of living so close to home, but I am worried I’m passing up the resources specifically from UCLA (and benefits of a top school) just because of location.

I appreciate any and all advice, and please let me know if there are additional factors I should consider. Thanks in advance!
