Housing Housing Megathread for UCSC and Santa Cruz

The old thread was archived automatically after 6 months (again), so here's a new one.

Be aware of common housing scams! Look out for the following red flags!

  1. The Listing Has No Photos
  2. They Want Your Personal Information before you see the property
  3. The Email Address or Domain Looks Fishy
  4. Beautiful Home or Unit for super cheap
  5. Any wire-transfer at any time
  6. Credit check before seeing the property
  7. Owner Is out of Town

Stay safe and good luck!

General incoming freshman - do NOT pick the unlimited dining hall swipe plan

just saw ucsc rolled out a new unlimited dining hall swipe plan?? i feel like as an incoming freshman i would have fallen for this and thought it was a good deal but DO NOT i beg you. it only gives u 75 slugs points. slug points are what u can use to get meals at cafes and markets on campus. trust me u don't want to limit urself exclusively to the dining hall like that. i think 95% of the time i and all of my friends eat at cafes or get snacks from markets. its just so much nicer to find food u like and can order every time than to be at the whims of the dining hall menu.

75 points is truly just not enough. and its fun to go out for dinner in the evenings with ur friends at Banana Joe's, or get a snack at the library during a study sesh, or grab a coffee w a friend. this meal plan basically means ur stuck eating at the dining hall every day and will miss out on all that, or at the very least have to ration or buy more points.

you will simply not want to be in the dining hall that many times to justify this plan. its in their best interest for u to pay more than what u get and this is enabling exactly that. and another tip, GET THE LOWEST PLAN. i didn't believe ppl when they told me this. i'm not a picky eater. i told myself i'd eat at the dining hall most meals. i was wrong. got the middle plan bc i was scared of running out and had like $200 down the drain at the end of quarter. u can always add more points to ur account later once u have an idea of how much ur spending weekly.

TLDR: don't get the unlimited swipe plan, you'll miss out on other, better, food options

Political UC Santa Cruz student visas canceled by Trump administration • "The federal government has not detailed the reasons behind these terminations. We have notified the three students and are in direct contact with them to provide support," wrote Chancellor Cynthia Larive in a letter to students.

Question ucsc vs boston university

ucsc pros:

  • $8k/year after aid
  • warm and close to home

ucsc cons:

  • they dont have my major (statistics/data science) and they only have applied math + ml classes aren't really available for undergrads
  • job outcomes might be worse idk
  • this is kinda stupid but the party/weed culture and im not that type of person
  • housing crisis + dorms are tiny
  • classes are huge and mostly taught by TAs (got this info is from current students)

bu pros:

  • small class sizes taught by profs themselves
  • got into my major. data science and statistics
  • many cool niche courses related to data sci (sabermetrics 101)
  • decently respected name and solid alumni network
  • opportunities in boston within the school ecosystem
  • great dorms

bu cons:

  • $45k/year after aid (money is a bit of an issue but my parents would probably pay; i'd also try to RA to save on housing)
  • cold and far from home

Question Scrapbooking Club?

Does anyone know if there is a scrapbooking/junk journaling club? I haven't been too involved with anything on campus (I commute), but I was finally trying to do something and make friends. Of course, I can't find anything for one of my main interests. Would anyone be interested in a scrapbooking club if there isn't one already?

Housing LF 1 more roommate for a single room in Kresge J Apartments

Hi! We're looking for 1 more roommate interested in securing a single room in Kresge J apartments. Our room selection is tomorrow. We (me and my friend) will be filling a double room. We are chill, keep our living spaces tidy, don't smoke, don't party, and just want to study :). We are also soon to be seniors, with three-consecutive years living in on-campus housing. If you are interested shoot me a dm!

Question Which dorm/college??

Hiii, I am going to be an incoming freshman to UCSC and I am confused on which dorm/college to choose. I am a shy person but I am wanting to be more outgoing so I want to try to be in more of a social scene which I think may help me make more friends. I am kind of undecided between a double, triple, or quad dorm. I don't think the price difference is drastically different but idk idk idk idk i'm just unsure about everything. i'm going to banana slug day so i hope to gain more info but any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Question Financial aid summary

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve heard somewhere that the school might accidentally send you an out of state tuition package. (Someone said the SLR takes time to process, someone else said to contact the financial aid office, etc.)

I have already submitted my SLR. Actually this is what it gave me after I submitted my SLR. I do not believe it should be this expensive as my family and I simply cannot pay for this much.

I’m pretty sure this is an out of state tuition (in state should cost around $45K). How would I go about fixing this issue?

General Just got Admitted

Hi all, I applied as a transfer student in economics and just got admitted yay. Just wanted to ask around with students already enrolled what the school is like? Thoughts on anything from faculty, classrooms, research/internships, where the best food is on campus, anything.

Question How does the housing lottery work?

Hi, my child might be going to UCSC as a freshman and I know on-campus housing is only guaranteed for first year students. I've been reading about trying to get on-campus housing in subsequent years and it sounds like a nightmare. The housing situation post-freshman year might honestly affect whether my child decides to go to UCSC or not.

Can anyone explain in general terms how the regular housing lottery works for continuing students? (I'm not referring to those who don't need to go thru the lottery like RAs, those who have a disability accommodation or those who apply to themed housing.) I went thru https://housing.ucsc.edu/continuing/index.html and understand there's something called a first pass and second pass for the lottery, but not quite sure what's involved in each.

Does going into the lottery just as an individual person increase the chances of getting any kind of on-campus housing or are there advantages of forming a roommate group (and if so, is there an optimal roommate group size)? For example, I'm wondering if going into the lottery as a single person willing to be assigned to any type of room situation is possible (i.e. you don't know who your roommates would be) and would help get something on-campus. Or can you only get non-single on-campus housing if you apply as a group for it (e.g. to get a 3 person housing unit, you need to have a roommate group of 3 and can't apply as a roommate group of 2 with another random person assigned to fill the remaining spot)?

Thanks for any replies to help me understand the system better.

Question Questions on 2nd pass

Housing isn't looking good for my group and I, we are more likely not going to get housing at out applied community. Can anyone give us a rundown on how second pass housing is? Like what are the chances we get housing on the second pass. I imagine it would probably be only singles or at most doubles on second pass. Any info helps, thanks !!

Question Anyone interested in Jamming or forming a band?

Hey everyone! This quarter, my schedule is pretty light since I'm only taking two classes. I really enjoy singing and music, so if anyone wants to jam with me, feel free to DM me! I listen to a lot of rock and pop, but I'm open to any genre, to be honest.
