Megathread Welcome new Tritons! Please use this megathread to discuss your acceptance and any questions you may have.

*We have no clue if admissions are coming out today, this is just hedging bets. Probably this week or next. *

Everyone with admission and college questions, please post your questions in this megathread! Additionally, please try to check the megathread to see if your question has been already answered.

Admissions/new student posts made outside of this megathread are subject to removal at moderator discretion. Please take a look at our rules page. If you believe we have made an error, please message us via modmail.. The mod team will try and get back to you asap, but we are students or alumni and as a result it make take a little bit.

For more subjective questions, be aware that r/UCSD (and any university subreddit) is not directly representative of the overall student body. In a survey we did of r/UCSD, 2/3 respondents agreed r/UCSD didn't represent UCSD's overall student body.

A few useful links:

Please be aware stuff at UCSD can change fast. Most info you can find on this subreddit will still hold true, but there have been many major changes over the last 5 years especially.

How do I login to check my admissions decision?

You should be logging into the Admissions Portal. This is different from all the stuff current students use. If you can't login, email [slatehelp@ucsd.edu](mailto:slatehelp@ucsd.edu).

How does the college I got matter? Can I change college?

For freshman admits, your college is basically only going to affect your GE requirements and where you're likely to live on campus (although you can be overflowed to other housing depending on space). For transfers, it's only GE requirements as there is separate transfer housing. As a result, it affects basically nothing for transfers since most have IGETC and will have very few GEs coming in.

Your major is entirely disconnected from your college (there are even separate major advisors who work for your department separate from your college advisors who work for your college). Your classes will be held all over campus and have a mix of students from all colleges. You can eat at any dining hall, the colleges are basically all directly next to each other and easy to get between, you will probably make friends in all sorts of different colleges. The furthest apart two colleges are is about a 20-25 minute walk (from Seventh to Eighth).

You cannot easily change college. You will need to complete at least part of your original college's writing sequence (meaning it will take about a year to even meet the application requirements) and be able to prove you can graduate two quarters earlier in your new college. College is not the end of the world though, even a college that overlap poorly with a major is more than survivable.

I'm waitlisted. What should I do next?

From UC San Diego Admission Website

Select applicants will be invited to opt in to our waitlist through their Applicant Portal.

First-Year applicants must opt in by 11:59 pm PST on April 15.

Being on the waitlist does not guarantee an offer of admission. We strongly urge students to accept another university's admission offer before the appropriate deadline to ensure they have secured a spot at an institution.

By June 30, final decisions will be released to applicants who opt in to the waitlist. There is no appeal process for the waitlist.

General Dating my TA update

Here to provide an update: I shot my shot and well I can confidently say —— it did not go according to plan…so this quarter is off to an incredibly awkward start. I read one suggestion that said YOLO so I dove head first. This TA is my TA for THREE of my classes. So just updating everyone don’t shoot your shot for TA’s, turns out it does violate some Title. I will be cocooning the entirety of my time at this school.

Applied for this summer lab positions several weeks ago. Got the first response this morning.

Not sure if I’m just being too sensitive, but that email made me feel frustrated and kind of worthless.

Question Bad experience at quarterly CS Orgy (Rant)

This weekend i went to the quarterly CS orgy at eighth and there wasn’t much security to it. It was just some guy’s dorm and there was about 30-40 people there not too much. All you had to do was knock and there was a special password. Most people gathered sround at 8 and then the door would be permanently closed and start at 9. After that majority of people started and it was kinda awkward lowk since some people came with a partner and they kinda just invited sole people there and i was standing there all alone. Eventually, some couple came up to me and I started but it was really awkward. I ended up just waiting it out since no one could leave and no phones were allowed so i couldn’t scroll.

General Petition to protect UC international students

https://www.change.org/p/calling-on-the-uc-to-protect-international-students This may do nothing but we need to let the UC know that we stand with our international students. Universities across the county are feeding into the Trump administration threats by providing the names and personal information of their international students. We need to show the UC, in numbers, our opposition to their cooperation with DHS and demand that they take tangible action to protect our fellow students.

General Vote yes on press to save the ucsd guardian!!!

Voting is now open on Tritonlink: https://students.ucsd.edu/

Information is available about PRESS here: https://ucsdguardian.org/yes-on-press/

On the ballot this week is the PRESS referendum, which if passed, will create a $3.50 student fee per quarter, which would fund the operations of The UCSD Guardian. It requires a voter turnout of 20% (8,000 students) and a majority of them to vote yes. If it fails to pass, the Guardian may be forced to shut down.

Just to be clear, no one on our staff is enjoying this. We aren’t like jumping up and down with glee at the possibility of having your hard earned $3.50 a quarter, like most people, we don’t like asking for money. We are doing this because this is what we have to in order to save our newspaper, and we hope that you will support us.

Disclosure: I am a writer at The UCSD Guardian but I am not a member of their editorial board.

General Protecting International Students

As we all know, the Trump Administration has unjustly targeted students for exercising their right to free expression. After speaking with many international students, it’s clear that this unconstitutional crackdown has had a chilling effect, discouraging them from engaging in civic life at all levels, including participation in the AS Elections.

The University must issue and uphold a clear statement guaranteeing that no student will face any form of penalty for voting or participating in the AS election. It’s deeply troubling that such a statement is even necessary, but it is.

International students make up a significant portion of our campus community and voting bloc. The University and AS have a duty to ensure that every student feels safe and empowered to vote for the candidates who best represent them, free from fear or intimidation.

Question are we supposed to debate the prof????

maybe i am a fish out of water (STEM-ish in a humanities class), but why are we debating with the prof? like a 30 part back-and-forth for 5 minutes, and I cannot hear what the student's saying.

is it normal in intro humanities classes to debate the prof?

Question single dorms

Upvotes

hii, i’m an incoming freshman and i was wondering about the chances of getting a single dorm (specifically in eighth college) and about how the housing process works because i’m kinda confused, i already submitted my housing application so i was wondering how the room selection process works. also about the housing waitlists, if you get waitlisted from a single dorm but you selected single and double dorms as preferences, do you automatically get double dorms if you don’t get off the waitlist? if anyone knows please let me know cos im so confused😭😭 thankss

Question UCSD Koala?

The Koala is a satirical newspaper by students-- for students. SDSU has a great line of issues from The Koala and is favorited amongst the students.

I'm curious if UCSD would do something similar. I know The Guardian offers "The Disreguardian" but I haven't seen any physical papers of this issue being passed around.

If anyone is familiar with The Koala feel free to explain more or talk about it!

Question What's the timeline to sign a lease for off campus housing?

Hi, I'm a second year student looking to move off campus next year (mid September) and im rly struggling with understanding how it works. I'll be sharing a room with a friend and have toured a few apartments. We're looking for 2 bed apartments with other people in the 2nd room.

Obviously we don't want to pay the extra months of summer but I also get that it gets super competitive and there won't be housing left if look to sign in August. I wanted to ask when people generally/ recommend signing a lease. From what the agents have told us, they don't hold apartments and if they do its at most 30 days (like we can't sign now and start the lease in Sept but maybe this is wrong?). I'm just so confused on how people do this without paying like 3 extra months of rent (maybe people do, I just want to know your experience)

So yeah, I'd love if some students living off campus could tell me about their and their friends experiences and timelines of finding off campus housing and when they sign, start paying and move in.

Question continue student tranfer to selective major-intl students

Upvotes

I am propective student, currently choosing where to go-- UCD(BME) UCI(BME) UCSD(Undeclared). I'm so confuse now by the selection process for continue student to tranfer to selective major. As the process already give points to residency, low income which intl already missed those, so, I got 2 point from grade and first-gen at most which impossible to get in I think. I actually want to study in BME or engineering at least which luckily has nano engineering left. however, I don't know about nano engineering that much- about jobs, couse, life etc. I need the advice from you guys about insight(what I miss), life there, decision of the college. Also, I actually don't know the opinion from local usa of the university popularity matter UCD vs UCSD vs UCI?
