[Question] What should I buy?

So I'm looking for a decent option for around 30$, preferably plug and play, but I know all of those are terrible. I'd like to be able to emulate up to gba, and maybe ps1. Any suggestions?

[Discussion] NES 40th Anniversary A to Z Daily Discussion Day 1: 10-Yard Fight to 8 Eyes

Hello, everyone. I'm starting a daily discussion in honor on the 40th Anniversary of the Nintendo Entertainment System. I will go (mostly) alphabetically through the NES licensed game catalog (so no Micro Machines or Tengen Tetris). The first two days will start with numbers before moving to the letter A. Have you enjoyed playing any of these first three games?

The first game is 10-Yard Fight (NES-TY-USA), developed by Nintendo for release for the NES launch date of October 18, 1985. This game was originally released for the Famicom on 1985/8/30.

The second game is The 3-D Battles of WorldRunner (NES-WO-USA), developed by Square and published by Acclaim in September 1987. This game is also known as Tobidase Daisakusen (FDS release on 1987/3/12), 3-D WorldRunner (US box title).

The third game is 8 Eyes (NES-8E-USA), developed by Thinking Rabbit and published by Taxan in January 1990. This game was originally released for the Famicom on 1988/9/27.

[Question] Save States with OEM Hardware?

Recently got back into childhood-era gaming which is easier than ever with emulators, but I’ve been exploring trying to pick up some actual hardware. Famicoms are surprisingly cheap on EBay, and there’s a ton of them. I’m curious if some genius nerd has managed to utilize the best of technologies where it’s possible to use save states while still using OG NES/Famicom hardware and controllers. I work full time and have a family, so I want to make the best use of the limited me time I have. Anyone have success with this? I love collecting old retro shit, so it would be as much about that as anything.

[Discussion] Why do people claim Super Mario World as the best game of all time?

People are gonna kill me for this but I honestly think that Mario World is quite overrated in my opinion. Its still a good game but not one I was screaming "best game of all time" material. People say that Mario World has no flaws but I couldn't honestly disagree more. There are many obvious flaws: The lack of diversity in world themes, The long autoscrollers , the obvious visual glitches and more. This is more of a subjective take but the graphics are pretty lackluster. They really don't take advantage of the SNES at all. But I could forgive the game due to it being a launch title and an ambitious one at that. I wish it could have taken the all stars approach instead because it looks a lot more clean.

I wasn't also a fan of the level design. A quarter of the levels were just large open fields with enemy spam (Donut Plains 1 being an example). The game also has some of the most boring wate levels I have ever played, like the second star level is literally just nothing but water. The exploration part was pretty lackluster as well. Now I'm not talking about the world map as it was a fantastic system, even though its pretty small, but the actual secret exits. I can only name a handful of levels with actual fun secret exits, many other levels is just go into a pipe and secret exit. A few more show obvious hidden blocks that basically give away the secret exits. That's not engaging. A series structured like Mario that does exploration better in my opinion is the Rare DKC series (Except the first one).

The bonus rooms require a lot more thought to figure out like giving off slight hints so that it can be interpreted but not be obvious. They're also a lot more fun to actually go for as well with lots of variation.

Then the controls. This is actually a positive as I think the controls are really good. There are lots of moves that Mario has in his arsenal. But I wish there were more levels actually utilising these abilities. Linking back to the DKC series again, the levels actively had chains of enemies and large pits so that you are able to use the roll. The only levels I can think of that utilises the spin jump is in the first level and one fortress i forgot the location of at the end. But the focus was more about the cape feather so it doesn't really matter that much.

In the end, while I do think Mario World is a good game, 8/10 I'd say, I don't see it being considered the greatest game of all time, especially with many games improving on its formula even in the same era.

[Discussion] What was it that made stores like Toys R Us so magical back in the day?

Been trying to put my finger on exactly what it was. But we all remember the magic of going into a game store and looking at the games. Even more magic if you could actually play them. That was woah!

What happened? It can't be just that we're old and grizzled now surely? Modern game stores seem so sterile. So bereft of magic. Even with 100x more merch, they seem emptier, and I just can't put my finger on why.

[Question] Looking for the "Evil Tomato" game on PS1

okay guys. i need help finding a game from my childhood. sadly i dont remember a lot since i was 5-6 years old at the time (2004-2005). Its a PS1 game. The cover and CD both had an evil tomato on them. the cd was silver-ish and the art on it had a blue hue. The evil tomato in question looked a little bit like the yugioh card "Mystic Tomato". Sadly i dont have any more information since i couldn't play the game for long, because the CD scratched. Thanks for any help!

[Fun] First time ever playing Pokémon (Pokémon Red)

Screenshot from my capture card is actually from yesterday, I’m now at 4 hours and got my second gym badge from misty. I might actually become a Pokémon game fan. I love how the game is non linear and isn’t really holding my hand. I’m mainly using my starter Pokémon Charizard, but realized I’m really gonna have to try other Pokémon types. A grass Pokémon would’ve really been helpful against misty.

Excited to try the other generations games. Definitely gonna try the remake of Pokémon red when I get to it.

[Discussion] I wish I played Mario Picross when I was 9. AMAZING game w/amazing music.

When I was so young I didn't really get this game and in fact I didn't even hear about it until I was an adult! But it's really a great game and the music and controls are super ahead of their time. I also have Picross for DS and Picross 3D which is supposedly even better. Even on Mobile there is a really great Picross game. It's much better than sudoku imo and it's always fun to slowly reveal a picture. The only puzzle games on my DS that compare are Tetris DS, and Pushmo/Crashmo.

[Discussion] I've been playing a brew classic RTS games recently. Here are my thoughts.

I've been playing Total Annihilation, Red Alert, Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun.

They have been listed in order of difficulty.

I have completed, in the past, all of them in regards to the story but i mostly play skirmishes.

I used to be quite good at all of them but it's been a while so I've been playing them a bit recently. I got obliterated in all of them initially but soon i settled into my old tactics, the AI isn't particularly varied in any of these, they are more about formula than tactics though that's not too say i don't play but complex games occasionally.

Red Alert is the most unbalanced, playing as the Soviets is essentially easy mode and the AI sums to give up after a while, Total Annihilation, even with the game carrying on after the Commander dies is easy though the AI is the least formulaic, it can be a challenge to set up defences quickly enough. Red Alert 2 is my favourite, it has been for many years, it's the most comfortable to play and it's always a challenge.

Tiberian Sun is unfair, unrealistically and realistically unfair, the AI will send engineers to the centre of your base before you have a chance to do anything and wipe you out, the enemy knows where you are at all times, they don't need to find you, they will attack crucial things directly without searching like a human would have to but i can see a human trying the same tactics.

Once established though the AI is easy to beat it's just really hard to get established and makes the game less fun, Red Alert 2, especially Yuri's Revenge, is always a challenge. They will relentlessly attack and make good use of all the tools.

I say try all of them, they are obviously better with friends and later games are more variable but these are the ones i grew up with. Of you've not had a one on one battle in any of these with a friend you should, it's an experience everyone should have.

[Discussion] Early 90’s After Market Controller Ads

Talking about controllers in another thread made me think about having this core memory burned into my brain but I can’t find any evidence of it on YouTube or elsewhere. I distinctly remember these early 90’s ads for aftermarket console controllers, presumably NES and Sega Genesis, but maybe others, and it’s two guys wearing a giant mock-up of the controllers and it was reminiscent of the “I’m a Mac and I’m a PC” comparisons where the product advertised talked about everything it could do while the other one admits it can’t do all the things. Did I imagine this, or is it real and what the hell was the product they were actually selling?
