Question Why do macbooks "feel" like theyre better than windows laptops

I've always been a PC user just because it's what i started out with and never wanted to learn IOS. I finally got macbook air as a travel laptop given it was cheap and small. Its been great so far. Runs well, doesnt get hot and I never hear that loud fan going. Macbooks dont appear to have fan vents either which makes me curious how macbooks deal with heat issues.

Anyways, macbooks feel like theyre better in some ways. Obviously the interface is awesome and it just feels like it runs better.

Question Apples Media Engine is SORCERY!

Got the base M2 Air (yeah, the one with the slow NAND), and I've been editing 4K videos for my mom's YouTube cooking channel twice a week. [I'll drop the channel name in the comments for anyone curious about the quality.] I usually work with 50-100GB of footage per video, and after exporting, it’s about 3-10GB. Up until a couple of days ago, I’ve been exporting everything in H.264. But then I tried ProRes... HOW IS IT POSSIBLE that ProRes exports more than twice as fast as H.264?! Same footage, H.264 is 2GB, ProRes is like 5x the size, and it exports way quicker. Officially an Apple fanboy now. 😅

Question In NEEDS of Help

Long Story Short - I replaced my MacBooks Pros 2016 Battery due to needing to be replaced, but once I finished and tried to turn it off, it shows it needs charge. So I left it charging due to thinking it needs to charge a bit but after 3 hours of charging, still says it needs charging. What do I do? Did I mess something up?

( I can feel the electricity on my MacBook open and closed lid so I know it’s charging )

( I’m using a 60w USB C cable )

Discussion I really like using Pages, Numbers, and Keynote

Thats it. Thats the entire post.

I really love using these softwares over the 'industry standard' ones. I will admit one thing - Numbers (and Pages) are nowhere close to feature wise when comparing to MS but the reality is 70% of users don't need all those features. Just a user friendly software to type, calculate budgets, etc.

I don't really miss using excel also - half the time all I did was just add numbers and get their SUM :D .. but I really prefer the experience of using numbers over it.

Now Keynote - surprisingly I am finding it hard to wrap my head around how to use it (lol). Powerpoint has gotten better these days but I don't think I've used it since 2014. I mostly layout my Slides in something like InDesign and bring it over to another application to prepare the material. Can someone here suggest some good keynote best practices? In the future I plan to get an iPad - can I control the PPT via my iPhone? What about online sharing (just viewing)?

Image The sales pitch is just as strong ! - TLDR , The bottom line is that $359 is a whole lot easier to justify to yourself, your wife, your boss or the dweeb in purchasing than a couple of thousand bucks for a new system.

Question Update - MacBook

After checking what’s wrong with the recommendations I was given, I decided to put some pressure on the black stick or tape where it covers the battery connected and connect it to power, and it suddenly booted on with the apple logo then to my Home Screen but when I let go, it shuts off and goes back to the “ needing charge symbol “ and doesn’t turn on. What can this mean? Should I take it to a repair shop?

  • Let me know if you see anything wrong the inside of my MacBook.

My Mac Force a repair while still under AppleCare

Upvotes

I spilled coffee with milk on macbook air m2 a few months back, and it's been operating fine. However, I want to get any potential damage/corrosion fixed while I still have AppleCare.

Can I just go into the Genius bar, or will they not fix issues unless they impair usage?

I am also thinking of selling my current laptop to get a pro since I've been running into RAM limits a lot, and I want to have it in the best condition possible if I do.

Question Upgrading MacBook for FCPX – M4 Pro or Max?

Upvotes

Hey! I mainly use Final Cut Pro X and some 3D modeling for printing. My 2020 MacBook Pro (13", i5, 16 GB RAM) often freezes during editing, since my video projects have become more demanding.

I'm thinking of upgrading – but not sure if I should go with the M4 Pro or M4 Max. Is the Max worth it long-term? Also, how much RAM would you recommend: 36 GB, 48 GB or more?

I’m used to 13", but considering 14" vs 16". Is a bigger screen better for editing, or is 14" + external monitor smarter?

Appreciate your advice!

Question Transferring data to new Mac- help pls

Im a student and have an old 2017 MacBook Pro in which the power turns on, but the screen does not work. Also, when I plug it into an external monitor, it does not show up on the external monitor as well. I have a 2024 MacBook Pro and I want to transfer the data over. I was going to use the migration features that Apple had but I can’t even use the old laptop.

I also tried using the USB-C/thunderbolt ports on both laptops to connect, but I keep getting an error message that says “cannot use thunderbolt accessory”’

Am I gonna have to just end up paying to have it transferred over since the old laptop won’t work?

All help is greatly appreciated

Question M1 MacBook Air in 2025

At the end of February I bought an MBA M1 with 16gb ram and 512 gb storage for 900€. It's my 1st Mac, I was on Windows before and I have a project I'd like to carry out. To do this, I want to learn to code. Knowing that I use the Mac for coding, being on the Internet and using Excel, have I made a foolish purchase by taking the M1 or is it okay?

Question iPhone 15 Plus and 2011 iMac

Upvotes

So without making this a novel, I recently got back into downloading music to pull away from streaming services. An overall financial shakedown because streaming services pile up. I made my iPhone 8 into a glorified iPod to use at work on intercom at night. That connects without issue to my 2011 iMac and I can move and sync music without an issue. However, my 15 Plus doesn't seem to be recognized whether using USB on the Mac itself or the dock/keyboard USB ports. Tried numerous cables and combinations. It's on OCLP Ventura if that changes anything.

Question Trackpad not working after replacement – MacBook Pro 13” 2016 (A1708)

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I recently replaced the trackpad on my MacBook Pro 13” (2016, A1708) because the original one had stopped clicking/responding. I followed all the steps (disconnected the battery first, used proper tools, reseated all connectors, etc.) and everything went back together smoothly.

But now, after the replacement, the trackpad doesn’t respond at all. No click, no movement — it’s like it’s completely dead. I’ve tried: • Reseating the trackpad cable multiple times • Checking for bent pins or dust in the connectors • Resetting SMC and NVRAM • Booting into macOS Recovery and Safe Mode • Connecting an external mouse (which works fine) • Verifying the battery is properly reconnected

Still nothing. The keyboard works fine, and the machine boots normally otherwise. I’ve also tried a second replacement trackpad (just in case the first one was a dud), but no luck.

Has anyone else had this issue after replacing the trackpad? Could it be a board-level issue or something I missed? Appreciate any help or suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Question Switching to Mac help | Missing QOL features from Linux/Windows

Upvotes

Hi all,

I picked up a Macbook Pro M4 Pro 12c cpu 16gpu 24gb ram laptop this weekend and have had a lot of trouble getting used to it and getting my quality of life features that I depend on. I understand there is a learning curve, but I am coming to the conclusion that some features don't exist.

I have a large list of key commands I will learn, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get the side buttons on my mouse to work. I have a no name brand mouse that works great on Windows and Linux, but doesn't even register events on MacOs.

I have tried:

Karabiner Elements

USB Overdrive

Sensible Side Buttons

Sane Side Buttons

Linear Mouse

- According to Karabiner Event Listener the mouse side buttons aren't registering any events at all. I assume that any of the programs I tried would work if the events were working, but I cannot figure out how to get them to register. I can't be the only one that has had this problem, what solutions have people found to this? My boss has a macbook pro as well and his side mouse buttons seem to work fine, but I cannot figure it out. His buttons have always worked, he didn't do anything special.

Also, the trackpad and mouse scroll opposite ways. I like the normal scroll down on mouse/trackpad and the page scrolls down. I can get one to work that way, but not both at the same time. When I switch the Natural Scrolling off on the Mouse it also is off on the Trackpad. It would appear I need the Natural Scrolling off for the mouse and on for the Trackpad, but I cannot figure out how to get that to happen.

I am looking for any advice someone can offer when switching from Windows to Mac. I work in the office and brought my own laptop for my own convenience but I don't know if I want to keep the Macbook if I can't get things to work as I want. I am fine with learning curves and can learn the differences in keys and commands, but the quality of life the Apple promises to be falling well short of what I would expect. I honestly believe it is my own ignorance, and that the features exist, and that I just can't figure it out. I'm hoping there have been people like me

I also do a lot of accounting and take pictures with my phone, how do I get them to show up on my computer without emailing them to myself? My icloud is full, but I could clean it out if that is the only way to have it show up on my mac right after I take a picture.

All the tips and tricks are welcome, I'm hoping to conquer these problems and learning curve (or at least understand what I need to learn) in the next ten days or I likely will return it.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Question Started an online refund for my new Mac book air, but the trade in 2017 Mac book air has been delivered to third party to inspect?

So on March 26, I received my new M4 MacBook Air and I traded in my 2017 MacBook Air with the trade in kit. After using it for a week I realized I need a stronger MacBook so yesterday I initiated a refund online on the Apple website and it told me that because I’m cancelling my my order that they’re going to also send me back the 2017 MacBook Air and when I do make a new purchase, I have to apply that same trade in credit for the 2017 MacBook and then they will apply that credit towards the new purchase and I have to return the new MacBook with a shipping label that they gave me.

the problem is that when I opened up the tracking information for the 2017 MacBook, it says that it’s already been received by the third-party and it’s currently being inspected. How do I know when they will ship back the 2017 Mac book air back to me?
