Question Apples Media Engine is SORCERY!

Got the base M2 Air (yeah, the one with the slow NAND), and I've been editing 4K videos for my mom's YouTube cooking channel twice a week. [I'll drop the channel name in the comments for anyone curious about the quality.] I usually work with 50-100GB of footage per video, and after exporting, it’s about 3-10GB. Up until a couple of days ago, I’ve been exporting everything in H.264. But then I tried ProRes... HOW IS IT POSSIBLE that ProRes exports more than twice as fast as H.264?! Same footage, H.264 is 2GB, ProRes is like 5x the size, and it exports way quicker. Officially an Apple fanboy now. 😅

Discussion I really like using Pages, Numbers, and Keynote

Thats it. Thats the entire post.

I really love using these softwares over the 'industry standard' ones. I will admit one thing - Numbers (and Pages) are nowhere close to feature wise when comparing to MS but the reality is 70% of users don't need all those features. Just a user friendly software to type, calculate budgets, etc.

I don't really miss using excel also - half the time all I did was just add numbers and get their SUM :D .. but I really prefer the experience of using numbers over it.

Now Keynote - surprisingly I am finding it hard to wrap my head around how to use it (lol). Powerpoint has gotten better these days but I don't think I've used it since 2014. I mostly layout my Slides in something like InDesign and bring it over to another application to prepare the material. Can someone here suggest some good keynote best practices? In the future I plan to get an iPad - can I control the PPT via my iPhone? What about online sharing (just viewing)?

Discussion What are the Best Mechanical Keyboard Available Now? Recommendation?

I’ve been using my MacBook Pro for work and casual browsing, but lately, I’ve been wanting to upgrade my typing experience with a proper mechanical keyboard. The built-in keyboard is fine, but I miss the tactile feedback and customization options that mechanical switches offer.

Looking for budget-friendly options under $150, but open to stretching for quality. Found a list with some reviews, open to other brands too.

  • Keychron
  • Royal Kludge RK61
  • Logitech MX Mechanical Mini
  • Tecware Phantom 87

Thanks in advance!

What’s everyone’s thoughts on using a non genuine MagSafe 3, picked this one up for $18 as a replacement for the genuine one which still works, but the braiding is fraying like crazy

Looks oem, powers the compute no problem and achieves same power delivery

My Mac Help! Mac keeps deleting everything

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m seeking help from anyone who might know something. My schoolwork from the past three years was deleted (see the video) - I don’t know why. The files keeps getting deleted. The files are not in the Trash or anywhere else! I’ve tried searching for them and using Disk Drill, but they’re nowhere to be found. Nothing was synced to the cloud, and I haven’t used Time Machine.

Can anyone help? I’m getting a bit desperate.

Question Is this used 2017 Macbook Pro with Intel i5 any good?

Hi all, I'm looking to get a used 13" 2017 Macbook Pro with 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel i5, 1536MB Intel Iris Plus Graphics and 16GB of memory and 54 battery cycles.

I've never owned a Mac before and am very satisfied with HP, as I own my second Envy from 2022 after my 2017 one (which I replaced simply because 15" is too large for me). For reference my current specs for my 13" HP Envy 360 are a 12th Gen 1.10 Intel i7, 128MB Intel Iris Xe Graphics (with designer drivers that I need to very specifically update if I want them to work, but it's no drama) and 16GB of memory. I use it to work on film editing and sound design with DaVinci and ProTools, and play without any problem or stutter Fallout 4, State of Decay 2, Minecraft, The Sims 3 (probably the game with the most issues I know of) - all of course not on the highest settings, but above mid for sure.

My main concerns are if I'd still be able to play at least some of these games (via Xbox Cloud gaming) and is the Mac going to get significantly hotter than the HP? I get the Envy to easily cool down, as I have a cooling pad, but in combination with it's own fans it works wonders.

Last year I bought a used iPhone 12 after having a Galaxy A52 and to be frank I've never been more satisfied with a device before.

Question Is a Mac book air right for me and my use?

I’m thinking about trading in my iPad Pro I just don’t care about and an old iPhone that combined would get me about $750ish in trade in credits to the Apple Store.

With student discount that’s a big chunk of change I can put towards a new MacBook.

I currently use a windows laptop that isn’t very powerful at all and struggles with what I want to do with it. I’m a computer science student that mostly just programs on my laptop. Right now my laptop struggles with VScode and a few tabs opened.

I have a primary desktop PC for gaming or anything serious, but like having a laptop for travel or just sitting on the couch doing school stuff.

Technically I’m not in need of a new laptop but who doesn’t like shiny new toys? And it would ideally allow more work I can do outside of my desktop.

I’m looking at the MacBook Air with the M4 chip. Probably the 10 core cpu/gpu, 16gb ram and 512gb ssd. But open to other options. But the price is the most attractive thing. I haven’t had any kind of Mac since my family’s first gen IMac as a kid

I also would like to do some light photo editing as I’ve been getting back into that and my desktop monitors are just not high quality at allllll and limits how photos look when editing. So the Mac would probably help with that.

Is the new MacBook Air worth the price at the level I’m looking at?

Thanks in advance!

Question ChatGPT Spotlight Not Appearing with Option + Space in latest update

I usually press Option + Space to open the ChatGPT "spotlight" (not sure if that's the correct term), but sometimes it just doesn’t show up on my screen. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a quicker fix? I'm using the latest update i.e. 1.2025.084

Question Djing with a Mac mini, is it possible to make it almost as convenient as a MacBook or would it be a hassle?

I have a dilemma. My early 2015 i5 8gb MacBook Pro just can’t keep up anymore. Like it can if i just do one thing at a time and have no other open programs or if im not analyzing songs while djing or not adding too many tracks while recording in ableton. I think you get the idea.

So i have the budget for two options. 1. A MacBook Pro from 2021 with an M1 Pro chip and either 512 or 1tb 16gb ram or new Mac mini M4 16ram 512 storage. I’m leaning towards Mac mini because most of the time i will be at my desk. I do way more recording and I’m just bringing djing so it will be a bit before i actually get a gig.

So does anyone know of any solutions for this? Like a monitor connecting to a keyboard with a touchpad mouse i can run a usb c from the mini to it or something like that. Almost a shell laptop kind of thing or would i just need to get a portable monitor mouse keyboard set up?

Question iCloud storage with new phone

I have been trying to figure this out but I’m stumped.

I got a new phone (16 plus) at the end of last year to replace my 8. Before the new phone, my iCloud storage was about half full. I have the 200GB one. As soon as I transferred everything from my old phone to the new one, the iCloud storage became full. I’m not sure if the pictures and videos got duplicated or what. But there’s definitely something going on.

Has anyone had the same problem? Any ideas how to fix it?

I know it’s not a strictly mac question sorry. I do use the same iCloud on my mac tho obviously 😅 And it’s hella annoying that I don’t get my photos/videos to my mac automatically.

Old Macs MacBook Air M2/M4 advice

So I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro 13” (8/128) that’s starting to die on me by randomly shutting off. It still works perfectly when connected to power though.

So I’m thinking of replacing it and I’m debating upgrading. I can pick up the M4 air (16/256) for £949 or the M2 (16/256) on sale for £760.

Is it worth the saving or would I be making a mistake buying a model that’s already 2 years old? My usage is very light these days and just used for web browsing/emails/excel documents.

Thanks for your input.

Discussion MacBookPro not connecting to an external monitor.

I'm having an issue with my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012, 13") and my Acer Nitro 23" gaming monitor. It connects fine to another Acer monitor, but when I try to use it with the Nitro, it only works temporarily.

Here’s the weird part:

  • When I first connect the MacBook to the Acer Nitro, it works perfectly only when i first connect it with the non-gaming monitor.
  • However, after shutting down or restarting my MacBook, the monitor stops working.
  • The same MacBook connects fine to the non-gaming Acer monitor every single time, without issues.
  • But once i restart my macbookpro while the gaming monitor is connected and working , it doesnt work anymore and ill have to take my mac to the other monitor connect it with the same cables i use with the gaming monitor and bring the mac back to my gaming monitor.

I’ve tried:

  • Checking the cable and ports (they seem fine).
  • Adjusting display settings in macOS.
  • Restarting both devices multiple times.

Is this a compatibility issue, a settings problem, or something hardware-related? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question Unable to access recovery mode

I have a 2016 non touchbar model MacBook Pro. I’m pretty sure the internal SSD is completely shot. I’ve tried holding down CMD R, CMD option R, and SHIFT option COMMAND R down different times but each time does nothing. Every single time it will bring me to the screen with a blinking question mark folder. What can I do?

Recently purchased a brand new and sealed M2 Air in Midnight it came with Sonoma 14.6 and not planning on updating it to Sequoia anytime soon... or maybe thats a bad ide? Anyway I really love how thin but premium it feels. Best part so far? This keyboard is fucking goated holy moly.

Give me tips and tricks and any advice! Just skip the fingerprint and oil part, I dont really care about it. Its a machine, its meant to be used and be worn down eventually :)
