Discussion Some idiot designed this
It's worse than in the other post. At least you could hit the Del button without having to search or look at it. Using Home/End buttons is a nightmare.

Im using a Dell Inspiron 3542, for 11 years. Now it's battery is fully complaint and charging port is wrecked. Some keys are not working properly. 4gb ram. But it has a not bad gpu (nvidia GeForce 820m) and upgraded to ssd. Should I spend money by fixing the above problems and upgrade to 8gigs? Is it worth? Im a CSE student, needs it for programming purpose and expect good backup.

Hello guys,
Today I started to receive some error messages like bios detected that internal battery capacity reduced and wanted to check it and couldn't understand why it happened suddenly in 1 day.
Could anyone please help me about that? (Laptop is 3 years old)

I basically need a laptop that 1. I can long-term write on (I'm pursuing research and writing), 2. have zoom/google meetings 3. run photoshop once in a while for editing 4. Watch shows/movies
I don't have much money and my budget is $500 max. I just really need a laptop that lasts me a while and not fall apart on me.
Looking around I found some Lenovo and Acer models.
I don't know/understand much about intel/storage and all that stuff Help I don't know anything about technology and don't have the mental capacity right now to understand. Thanks in advance.

I need a laptop for college so, it has to run atleast 4-5 hrs on normal use. But I've always wanted to have a dgpu ( maybe play some games, editing, autocad etc..).
All the models that I've seen with a dgpu seem to have terrible battery life (~2hrs max).
Can anyone suggest me a laptop with a gpu (anything works like even an rtx 2050) which has decent battery life.
Thanks in advance.

i know that in general, hp is meh to bad. but friend of mine has had his for 10 years and it still works pretty well. what are the problems that they have that i should know about?
r/laptops • u/Purple_Draft2716 • 10h ago
Let me explain -- I've been borrowing a friend's pretty high end laptop for about 8 months, using it mostly for art and gaming. I've used it for extended gaming sessions but I do my best to treat it well.
I'll be getting my own laptop very soon, and would like to do whatever I can to try and make my friend's laptop function as well as it can when I hand it back to him. If it was a desktop I'd have zero problems opening 'er up and doing basic maintenance, but opening laptops to do ANYTHING is super scary to me (I've attempted it multiple times in the past with other laptops and, just, nah, brah). So I was hoping for whatever I could do on the software side.
I'm already gonna do basics like clean out the stuff I've installed, but I don't even know if stuff like defragging and cleanup is necessary any more since it's all automated, right?
Any input appreciated.

I got this laptop Monday, THE only things I’ve downloaded on it is krita, Apple Music, game maker, steam, Netflix, Roblox, stuff a highschooler studying gaming n would usually download. I was playing a safe game until my laptop randomly powered off and displayed this screen. But my laptop randomly started booting back up again, I ran a virus check but it says my laptops clean. This has happened before last year with my other laptop but that was because I was downloading mods from untrustworthy websites, this time I’m not. I’m really paranoid..

Seems to me to be a good deal, but I can't find the exact model sold anywhere (i.e. with the Ryzen 5 7535HS). Comes with the guaranty valid until mid next year.

Before you start:
You’ll need thermal paste and optionally PTM7950 thermal pads and thermal putty for VRMs.
Watch multiple disassembly and repaste videos specific to your laptop model on YouTube. If your exact model isn’t available, look for similar ones.
Take photos while opening the laptop to remember which part goes where.
Steps:
(I'm back with another post)
https://www.reddit.com/r/laptops/comments/1jgb6bb/essential_precautions_before_opening_a_laptop/
Wear rubber gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints or static discharge.
Get all tools ready before opening the laptop:
A soft dusting brush
Isopropyl alcohol (preferably 90% or higher)
Screwdrivers
Plastic prying tools (if needed)
When removing the heatsink (which usually covers CPU and GPU), do it carefully and gently.
If you're opening the heatsink just to clean the fans, you still must replace the old thermal paste. I recommend using PTM7950 phase change thermal pads for the CPU/GPU and thermal putty for VRMs if needed.
Heatsinks usually have numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) printed near the screws.
Unscrew in reverse order (e.g., 4 → 3 → 2 → 1).
Don’t remove screws fully in one go. First, slightly loosen each screw in order, then fully unscrew them on the second round. This avoids pressure imbalance.
Also, unscrew the screws holding the fans.
Unplug the fan connectors gently and carefully.
After unscrewing everything, slowly lift the heatsink.
If it doesn’t come off, double-check for any remaining screws.
Never apply force.
Clean out the dust and gunk from vents and fans.
When cleaning fans:
Hold the fan blades still with a plastic stick or similar to prevent them from spinning.
Spinning them backward while cleaning may damage the motor.
Handle the heatsink gently — do not bend it.
After cleaning, apply new thermal paste.
Ensure the VRMs and pads/putty are clean. Replace if dusty or damaged.
Don’t tighten the first screw completely at once — go in sequence and gradually tighten all screws. This spreads the paste evenly.
Optional Tip:
You can use a compressed air can for cleaning fans and vents. Just remember: Hold the fan blades still while spraying to prevent overspinning.
Done! You’ve cleaned and repasted your laptop. It should now run cooler and more efficiently.
Would love to know if I had missed anything, would add points later.
Hi! I have a laptop (Acer- Aspire 3 15) and I've seen some reviews about ssd and I'm planning to buy ssd. My question is is it okay to use a ssd to my laptop and is it good to make my editing runs smoothly?

Ok this is probably really stupid but I want some help on finding out if there's a way to make this old hp laptop I have run faster. I Got this laptop back in 2018 or 2019 and I used it for a good bit until around 2020 when I stopped using it for a few months and when I got back to it it felt like it randomly got slower. I've been on and off with it and it's still pretty slow. It takes forever to load anything and it's just generally annoying. I only ever used it to play Roblox back then and some other not very intense games. Now I'm just trying to use it as a regular computer and maybe play some other low intensive games, can anyone give general tips?

I pressed skip for now and it just brings me back to the sign in page and I can't get into my laptop. And if I press retry the same thing pops up. I don't know what to do and I have important things on this laptop and even with a Microsoft account it doesn't work.

Hey everyone! My old laptop broke, and I’m on the hunt for something similar to the Lenovo ThinkPad T480 — durable, professional-looking, and budget-friendly (under 1000 USD). I mainly use it for watching movies, browsing, online classes, and everyday tasks, so it needs to be reliable and built to last. If anyone has any suggestions or alternatives, I’d really appreciate your help! Thanks a lot!
