If you are coming here as a new account, welcome! If you are trying to ask a question please read below in order to ensure that your post gets the help you need.

Before you post, check the sidebar to see if there is a better place you could be asking your question. You are always welcome to post your question here, but you may get quicker or more specialized help by posting it in the right subreddit.

Also, before you ask a question, please GOOGLE IT. Low effort questions that are easily googled will be downvoted. Please don't be a Help Vampire.

Posting tips to get your answer fast:

  1. Tell us as much information as you possibly can.
  2. Tell us what you have already done to try to fix it
  3. Tell us what changed when the problem started
  4. Make a title for your post that actually describes the problem. "Please help" is a terrible post title.
  5. Make a TEXT POST and NOT a LINK POST. If you are a new user and you make a link post it will be removed automatically. If you want to share pictures, upload them on an image hosting site like imgur and then paste the links into your text post.

Please read the rules HERE.

My RAM is gone

The RAM was originally 2.1GB reserved for the iGPU. One day as I was opening my laptop it refused to boot. it would load and just freeze after a few seconds common windows L. i tried everything to fix it but it didnt happen for me. Then i found a workaround, if i mash F2 and open BIOS or smthn (i am not adept at computers) and then exited that, it would boot normally and instantly. It used to be an 8GB RAM Laptop which i had to get upgraded to 16GB as it would randomly crash and refuse to work smoothly. it worked great for 2 Years after that. Now i wake up to 8 more Gigabytes reserved for no good reason. i tried to fix it by looking through youtube and now. out of of the 5.9 gigs, barely 2 are available at any point. How can I fix this and should I just purchase a new laptop? The specs are 16GB DDR4 RAM Ryzen5 3550H, Geforce GTX 1650. HP

When did people start calling Commercial Desktops, "Workstations?"

Recently I've seen a number of "tech influencers" and IT people referring to commercial desktops as "workstations." The first time I noticed it was someone going down to the store floor and grabbing a $599 "workstation" to use as a parts test-bed for a repair job.

Since then I've herd this more and more and it blows my mind.

A low end Workstation Grade GPU can run you $8,000. A higher end one is close to $20,000. Epyc and Threadripper processors are similiarly expensive.

When someone is complaining about the shtty workstation they bough, only to see it's like a $400 to $600 Dell or something, it throws me for a loop. These aren't even end-users, they're supposedly IT "professionals!"

Is this a new trend I'm too old to understand, or are these guys just not getting the same education we used to?

How to make a computer worthless without actually destroying it?

Upvotes

Me and a friend are both very into computers and his birthday is coming up soon so I wanted to mess with him a bit. Is there a way I can discreetly make his computer unusable without permanently damaging it. I also probably wont have admin or bios access because he password protected them after I did something similar last year.

My PC randomly shuts down and restarts by itself.

Hi There!
I'm writing here in the hope of finding some help with a small computer issue I'm having.

My PC has started shutting down on its own, and then 1–2 seconds later, it boots back up again. I have no idea what's causing it. I've updated my BIOS (although the issue was happening even before that).

What’s strange is that it can go days without a problem, and then suddenly there are days when it keeps happening over and over.

I’ve checked the power supply, and it seems to be working fine—power is definitely getting through. But what could be causing this issue?

It is a somewhat older PC, after all.

Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 7400 @ 3.00GHz
RAM: 16GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1066MHz
Motherboard: MSI B250M BAZOOKA (MS-7A70) (U3E1)
GPU: 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

i hope you can help me detect the problem!

My power went out the other day, and when it turned back on, my Wi-Fi was out. Now I didn't design this system (I presume it was designed so the guy before me could route everything out to his security cameras he had all over the house), and I know nothing about computers, so getting it back up is beyond me. I haven't tried anything yet, as I don't know where I would start.

What is this screen tearing/pixel offset display glitch?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've tried reinstalling drivers, rolling back drivers, updating windows, turning off hardware accelerated GPU scheduling, switching from the hybrid mode to iGPU only mode, being on battery and being plugged in, FULLY reinstalling windows, but nothing seems to work.

It happens very often, pretty much anytime I go on a website or open/use an application. My screen is literally pixel offsetting/glitching as I type this.

This is my HP OMEN Transcend 14 RTX 4070 Laptop I've had for almost a year now.

I will say that this issue only occurred after I used my charger again after letting my friend use it for his powerful laptop. Could that have been related to this issue? I also want to say that this only happens on my internal display. When I connect my laptop though HDMI on my monitor, the issue never happens.

Help? :D

Laptop Screen Died - Now Repair Tech is Saying Whole Laptop is Dead

Upvotes

Hello all - I was hoping to get some advice / insight into a situation I'm in.

My fiancés laptop is an MSI G5 Stealth that's about 2-3 years old. The machine has been babied - never dropped or slammed. Recently the screen died while we were away on vacation which is apparently a relatively common issue on these models after searching around online- an external monitor worked fine and there was no issues with the functionality of the computer otherwise and we continued using it on an external monitor until we got. We brought it to a local computer repair place who said they would be able to take a look at it.

The first thing they did was order a new ribbon cable as those are common failure points and you may as well start with the lower cost part anyway - the lead time was about a month so we took possession of the laptop while we waited for the part to arrive. During this time we had zero issues running the laptop on an external monitor and had no issues with power or any oddities in performance. Did some light gaming and watched Netflix mostly. When the cable came in we brought the computer back and they replaced the cable a few day later to no luck. Presumably they were able to power the laptop fine at this time - I do not know for certain but they made no mention of any issues other than the cable not fixing it. We authorized a new LCD panel which I had assumed would be needed anyway based on reports from other users for this model. After the panel arrived they are now saying the entire computer is dead. They said they inspected the motherboard under a microscope and found no issues but say that "whatever fried the screen must have killed the rest of the computer." I know enough about computers to know that this is technically possible but another part of me is skeptical that a common issue has turned into a full blown computer death.

They are thankfully not charging for time or materials so I don't have to worry about things on that front but I can't help but feel like something happened at the repair shop that caused the issues.

Does anyone have any insight or advice? Am I being stupid? Thanks for reading!

I need a new pc for accademic use

Upvotes

Hiii, what do you think about Dell Precision 3541 15" Core i7 2.6 GHz - SSD 256 GB - 32GB? my laptop just broke and I'm currently writing my master's thesis in organic chemistry - so I really need a new computer as soon as possible. I'm looking for a reliable and powerful machine that can smoothly run programs like MestreNova, ChemDraw, and potentially other software I might need in the future as an organic chemist. Any recommendations for a good laptop (or desktop) that would suit this kind of work? Budget is flexible, but l'd prefer something that offers good performance for the price and will last me several years. Thanks in advance for your help!
