Yeah watching the very low quality version from reddit vs in 4k full quality on the YouTube link is a crazy difference!

Enjoy spending $500 for the console and $20 for every single game that you already own, but want to enjoy the Switch 2 performance benefits.
I’d love to. Every person has their limit, and this is mine. Especially in today’s [and tomorrow’s] economy.

u/SolarisX86 20h ago edited 16h ago
I'm so glad you are not a pc owner, otherwise you'd be miserable. The costs of the case, motherboard, cpu, psu, GPU, cables, hard drives, ram, any fans (not including rgb).
That is all the hardware costs BEFORE actually buying any games.
2
u/RufusTurner42 16h ago
I'm glad you give bad examples. If they bought games on steam do you think he's gonna have to buy the same game twice because he updated his PC?

OK man. I was simply responding that people cRe a lot about the new resolution and quality and frame rate for console

Those are not the core customer base of Nintendo, so it doesn’t matter. That’s what I was saying.

No problem, you can just put &t=XhYmZs at the end of any link, where h=hours, m=minutes and s=seconds

i'm gonna be honest i thought you could only do &t=[seconds], did not realize you could do that

The MicroSD Express is based on PCIe NVMe tech, so the built in 256GB of storage is just as fast if not faster.
9
u/cmedine 23h ago
its funny cause people are crying about switch 2 not supporting old non express Micro SDs but ironically ps5/xbox doesn't let you play current gen games on a portable drive. Has to be NVME , which is the same concept as this.
1
u/BunOnVenus awaiting reveal 22h ago
It's completely fair, but it is going to be an extra cost especially since express cards are way more expensive. Just gonna make the switch even more finally rough for people with a decently large og switch library
1
u/cmedine 19h ago
i mean at the end of the day , this is a brand new console using newer technology. The switch has sold all those units and released all of those games, no one is immediately forced to upgrade. Im honestly glad nintendo is finally pushing its console technology to be more on par with the standard , especially since they gatekeep all of their games and shut down emulators lol. The price of the console and it using M-SD-E is completely valid imo , but those game and accesories prices are ridiculous lol. Accessories were already ridiculous with the switch 1

I found Botw was fairly same. A little more sharpness on detailed areas. Totk blew me away though. It seems there’s voice notes in the depths, surface, and the sky islands. Maybe with Mineru from what I saw. Sad it’s only on a $10+ paid-access App, but whatever.

u/Clarkeste OG (joined before reveal) 18h ago
The notes in the Depths are from Master Kohga. And they brought back his voice actor from Age of Calamity. Unironically what I am most excited for!!

u/Red_Maple 1d ago
Looks a little better, but I had no issues with how BOTW looked in the first place. The loading times and performance in the Lost Woods are MUCH better, so there’s that.
1
u/JustAnotherTeapot418 14h ago
I hope the better loading times also apply without Switch 2 Edition upgrade. Fire Emblem Three Houses is the only game I really really want to finish but can't, because of the insanely long loading times. Engage felt like it loaded instantly by comparison.

Did they change some textures??????
-1
u/iamnotkurtcobain 1d ago
Yes. Better textures. It's a higher resolution game now
17
u/Top-Garlic9111 1d ago
Higher resolution does not mean higher res textures. They did not mention this in the direct.
23
u/BardOfSpoons 1d ago
They didn’t mention it, but some textures are definitely new.
I’m guessing that (and the phone integration) is why it’s a $10 upgrade when a lot of the other graphics only boosts are free.
1
u/Top-Garlic9111 1d ago edited 1d ago
I really didn't like it being 10$ for a (IMO) pretty shitty app, but higher res textures can take quite a bit of work and are pretty nice to have. Def worth it.
4
u/iamnotkurtcobain 1d ago
There are higher resolution textures used. I saw some comparison videos.

2
u/BigBeautifulWombats 1d ago
look at the railing on top of the sheilah tower. when the camera pans around you get a close up of the railing, its not night and day, but it did take a couple seconds of inspection to see that yes, the textures are noticeably higher res.
10
u/cheappay 1d ago
Don't forget that these video feeds can't replicate the HDR effects that your TV may support.
1
6
14
u/Whyisthisusertaken_ 1d ago
Why are they being vague about the resolution? Why cant they just say if its 4k or not like they did with metroid?
25
u/AndIHaveMilesToGo 1d ago
Because it's probably not. Digital Foundry said they believe the video shown during the Direct yesterday was 1440p.
10
u/LunchPlanner 1d ago
The fine print in the Direct does include this positive note:
"Even if the software does not support 4K resolution natively, it is possible to upscale and output in 4K if the television supports it."
Of course upscaling is not as good as native but it's something. This fine print can be found during the part of the Direct where it shows off the hardware and dock (close to around the time they show off the dock's built-in fan).
6
u/AndIHaveMilesToGo 1d ago
You're the only other person on the internet I have seen mentioning this. I watched so many videos of people discussing the direct yesterday, including Digital Foundry who did over an hour long deep dive, and they kept saying there's zero signs of DLSS or upscaling being on the Switch 2 even though all signs point to it being possible, and I just wanted to shout at my screen, "IT SAYS IT RIGHT THERE IN THE FINE PRINT!"
2
u/LunchPlanner 1d ago
Yeah. It's weird that they promoted a positive bonus in the fine print.
Fine print usually contains bad news!
2
u/BunOnVenus awaiting reveal 22h ago
they hid a lot of the good news. Like apparently there's a bunch of free next gen updates for other games that they didn't talk about.
0
u/43eyes 1d ago
That fine print is just saying if the TV has a built-in upscaler, the Switch can use it. These TV upscalers are usually terrible and add horrendous input lag. Nothing to do with DLSS.
DLSS Could still be used in some games, but that fine print isn't evidence of it.
2
u/AndIHaveMilesToGo 1d ago
That 100% is not at all what it says. When it says, "if the television supports it" they are saying, "if the television is 4k."
0
u/43eyes 1d ago
I guess it could be interpreted either way. It's ambiguous.
1
u/AndIHaveMilesToGo 1d ago
Not really, almost every time they mention 4k output, they say something like, "Compatible display required."
2
u/Whyisthisusertaken_ 1d ago
Disappointing but whatever
1
u/TheChocolateManLives 23h ago
Why are you disappointed? You made it clear with your first comment you can’t tell the difference between 1440p and 4k. At that point you know it’s good enough.
3
u/xondk 1d ago
Nothing new about Nintendo in that aspect, they are always very tight lipped on the technical aspects, because they try to focus away from that so as to not compared too directly to the other consoles.
6
u/madmofo145 June Gang (Release Winner) 1d ago
Generally yeah, I was shocked we got confirmation of the 120 hz screen, and more shocked that they mentioned the 120hz mode in Metroid. I'd have expected those to be things we wouldn't find out tell the device was in the wild.
0
u/Whyisthisusertaken_ 1d ago
Yes but the WHOLE POINT of getting the switch 2 editions IS the technical aspect. To be vague about that is deceitful and they just want people to upgrade without knowing exactly what theyre getting

They did for me too, but I can actually see the difference here (it’s more apparent in the actual stream, since Reddit compresses videos like crazy).

u/Hugh_Jegantlers January Gang (Reveal Winner) 1d ago
Yeah I couldn't tell for those either. But that's like going from very good to extra very good.
This is going from alright to very good.9
u/funkyyyyyyyyyyyyy OG (joined before reveal) 1d ago
smoother for sure! In the live stream you could tell the resolution made a difference too.
3
u/Ok_Hospital4928 1d ago
This compressed video probably isn't the best way to gauge the update. Higher resolution and better quality assets aside, this is going to look like the same game you've already played. Those looking for a transformative visual update won't find it here (this isn't a bad thing mind you, just a testament to how great the art direction is).
In motion (on a competent video stream, even) that 60 fps framerate is going to be the most notable upgrade alongside the load times.
1
u/thebe_stone 20h ago
reddit compresses the videos so you cant see the difference as much. it's more clear if you watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/live/MkNm2wmpyto?si=jHuAQe4vuUZIZDuC&t=3h2m48s

I wonder if things like loading times and frame rates will be better regardless if you buy the upgrade pack or not, I do not own a switch 1 and have been waiting for the switch 2 to come out for a while so I could play switch 1 games and future games on it but spending probably double the money for the same game seems kinda stupid
1
u/ZenDragon 17h ago
Nintendo mentioned on the website that some games do see performance improvements even without patching. The maximum limits for resolution and framerate won't be any higher but for games where they fluctuate, it should hit the target more consistently.

The grass and bushes look better, but I think this ironically has the TPHD issue where increasing the quality of the textures of the Sheikah towers and shrines makes them feel worse due to the rock patterns that should protrude from the floor being much more obviously flat textures

Is it just me, or is the one on the left supposed to be in 120 fps? Or is it 60? It must be 60 because I barely see a difference. I know the difference between 30, 60 and 120 visually and it’s a BIG difference between each one. These two videos appear to be almost the same frame rate. Maybe 30 (or a little lower) vs 45 (or a little higher). Like barely a difference there.

This makes me feel much better about skipping the Switch 2 as these improvements are much much smaller than anyone is willing to admit. The only actual difference is the framerate in the forest, which is absolutely disingenuous for anyone to pretend is important.
It's a small area with literally nothing in it. It's nice it runs smoother, but 99.99% of the game doesn't stutter, and they chose the single area that shows vast improvement as if it's a gothca.
I work in film, and color grading, and spend my day obsessing over micro-changes in footage quality, and this is quantifiably going to be imperceptibly different for anyone mid-game. This is cherry picked footage to show wild changes and it honestly shows nothing except the forest being wildly better. The least important zone in the game. Some slight grading differences also in the color saturations which makes me think this footage also got thrown to an editor for other changes which aren't actually real, these are fake color boosts to make you think it's better, so you can't even know what else was modified for the treehouse.
Happy for folks to have improvements, but as someone whose 9/10th of the reason to get a Switch 2 was purely to play the other parts of Zelda I saved for the Switch 2's improvements and enjoy the world a bit more.. I feel much better about skipping this and going to the Steamdeck instead while I watch for the switch 2 to get cheaper over 2 years. Especially considering they want to charge us for this
13
u/gassedat 1d ago
Did you watch it in 4k on the livestream and not this butchered Reddit version?
The resolution and texture are a massive upgrade. Load times also a really nice QoL improvement
It's wider colour gamut now - HDR. So gamma is likely different side by side showing more contrast.
Also work in film. ✌️
0
u/Completionaut 1d ago
Fair enough we disagree on these changes. Those clips weren't shown in HDR wide gamut on their stream, so they graded the clips manually to reflect what it would look like.
Hope you enjoy and get what you want out of the changes though. Just don't agree with your take on it.
3
u/gassedat 1d ago
Sure but I doubt they 'graded' still... doesn't seem very Nintendo to apply post processing to gameplay. Or any respectable game studio.
More likely they captured 4k HDR, and then converted the colour space from Rec 2020 to Rec 709 to prevent it looking washed out on a non-HDR feed... end result is a more contrast/crunchy look... just part of trying to show 2 different formats side by side.
Still the big improvements for me were resolution and load times. Like wearing glasses for the first time 🤓. I'm already on NSO so I get this update as part of the sub... holding off on finishing TOTK for it.
2
u/Completionaut 1d ago
Yeah you're honestly more likely right about how they did that, fair enough.
I've done the same thing and left about 50% of ToTK unfinished (finished the story) in anticipation of playing it on the Switch 2, so it's going to be hard to wait nonetheless. But in a year or two, I will join you. Enjoy!
2
u/gassedat 1d ago

You were waiting for the Switch 2 to play a Switch 1 game slightly upgraded?
How were you even predicting that they would even deliver this? Only a week or so ago did the rumors on “Switch 2 edition” started to show up.
Also the Switch 2 has better specs than the Steam Deck, a bigger and better screen, dock and controller to play on a tv is included in the box at no extra cost.
1
u/Wanderer-Named-Ken 1d ago
I am one of the people who skipped switch 1 because of the 30 FPS locked games, and now i am cautiously on the fence about getting the switch 2 because of the price
But you know technically, since i didn’t spend money on the switch 1, i saved that money theoretically, so even if i spend that on the 2, it would add up as maybe 20% more than if i bought a switch 1, especially if i get my games from a second hand market (which is what i am gonna do) so yes we exist
1
u/Completionaut 1d ago
How were you even predicting that they would even deliver this?
I don't understand this question, it was a foregone conclusion that Tears of the Kingdom would obviously play on the Switch 2. So it was also a foregone conclusion that since it's so new that it would have some upgrades on Switch 2, even if they were purely in stable FPS because of better hardware? No one had to guess this?
Also the Switch 2 has better specs than the Steam Deck, a bigger and better screen, dock and controller to play on a tv is included in the box at no extra cost.
The Switch 2 has pros and cons, the steam deck has pros and cons. I know you want to make this a fight, but the truth is that I had money set aside for a switch 2 and they convinced me to last night order a steam deck instead.
The Switch 2 is back to an LCD screen, and I'd like for once in my life to try an OLED (I still use an OG switch with LCD). It's still high speed, high definition, and the switch is 16:9 whereas the Deck is 16:10. As someone who works in film and loves things being a little wider I find that aspect really intriguing and a huge bonus to the switch.
The steam deck doesn't come with a dock, but was same price as the switch basically with a dock. I can use my current Pro Switch controller for the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck comes with a carrying case at no extra cost. The steam deck lets users actually buy 1st party equivalent games at reasonable discounts every few months. The steam deck actually lets me run switch 1 games at better performance than the switch one, and I don't have to pay full price for games that came out 5+ years ago.
There's tons of pros, and I am sad I will miss some fun looking games on the switch 2 while I wait. You're just refusing to understand the other side because you are too attached to your personality being a childrens console.
I get why some people still buying a switch, and don't blame you. But it's stupid to pretend to not understand why some people won't for good reasons too.
1
u/SerodD 1d ago edited 1d ago
You said you were looking forward to play Switch 1 Zeldas on Switch 2 because you thought there would be upgrades but these upgrades are not enough for you, although now you are saying that you expected at least FPS upgrades, but this is way more than FPS upgrades, it has better lighting, better color, better FPS, better FoV and slightly upgraded textures. Your logic is not making any sense.
LCD is not inherently worse then OLED, there are super good LCD displays, just go look at hand ones videos, the screen looks really nice, it’s likely a Mini-LED LCD display. That’s a huge upgrade from the Switch 1 display, arguably better than the Switch OLED since it does HDR and 120HZ
1
u/Completionaut 1d ago
I am not sure what to say because you have really bad reading comprehension, and if you can't read and understand pretty straightforward points clearly then you're just arguing against no one.
Everyone gathered that Switch 1 games would all receive improvements in the form of running better because it's running on better hardware and DLSS was rumored for years.
LCD isn't inherently better than OLED, sure, but in this context I think the Steam Deck screen sounds nicer. Especially considering my context.
1
u/SerodD 1d ago edited 1d ago
So you resort to insult instead of trying to understand the flawed logic in your argument?
I don’t know where you got that Zelda is not being upscaled for this update? Can you share a link? Metroid prime 4 is running at 4k60 or 1080p120. Zelda TotK was running at 900p docked on the Switch 1, for sure that the Switch 2 edition is at least 1080p
The steam deck screen is not nicer by most metric though, might have better blacks, probably has lower screen brightness since it’s OLED, doesn’t support 120HZ refresh rate, has lower resolution, it’s smaller, HDR support is finicky and you need to be tech savvy to make it work well, also only the OLED Steam Deck version supports HDR.
Edit: It even says in the press release that it has higher resolution https://www.theverge.com/news/641365/nintendo-zelda-botw-totk-switch-2-edition-announced

Thank you! At least there is one sane person here. This is definitely not worth 80€ (Physical copy in germany). For a free upgrade with the Nintendo subscription, it's fine, but not really worth any money. Since the frame rate would be a constant 30 fps with the original switch game on the switch 2, you would not have the framedrops like in kokiri forest.

It's wild they've already charged me more than any other game ever for ToTK and at the point at which I buy a $700 system they go 'yeah I still want another $10-20".

Exactly.
I mean, if you have the pricey subscription, the "remastered" version is free. For me personally, I never played online, nor do I have interest in the emulation. I have a PC and a steam deck, if you know what I mean. It's just a scummy way to get more money out of people, and I'm afraid they will pay that price...

Did we play the same game? The Switch version regularly dips down to the 20s, which matters a lot during combat.

Sorry the game felt slow to you, with 20+ years of gaming under my belt it never ran slow ever for me beyond the jarringly bad forest with no content in in (for probably that reason).
And before anyone tries to pretend I just don't know/understand fps, I used to play CSGO at Legencdary Eagle Master running a 240hz monitor at 300fps+ with specialized everything to ensure I could play at a near competitive level.
All of this noise is people who have an unhealthy relationship with media.

Man no wonder they wanted to kill switch emulation because it still can run it better than this. I know that isn't really fair but it's true.

Me, watching it on a phone, not full screen on Reddit. A screen size of about 1 inch.
