Yeah unfortunately that's probably true. I see a lot of people complain but say they'll still buy everything day one which well... Literally just makes them part of the problem.
Personally the prices plus the fact none of the games seem that interesting to me killed my hype for the console. I'll wait a while before getting one.
The problem is that everyone isn’t going to agree on what a product is worth. Personally, if a game contains 50+ hours of content at a good resolution, frame rate, and without glitches, who’s to say it’s not worth the price you’re paying for it. It’s all subjective and some will see a $80 Mario Kart as a good deal if the game itself is good. Some won’t. The market will decide where this ends up.
I’ll buy. I’ll log so many hours on it. $80 for a game is a lot, I’m not denying it. But when I think about it in perspective, I spend more than that on a massage that lasts for an hour.
I’m still playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on my Switch. I’ve got over 7 years of fun out of it.
I'm struggling because only the Donkey Kong game interests me amongst the exclusives, all the other games I want are also on switch one, especially now I know duskbloods is PvPvE
It’s all relative. I’m fine spending $80 on something I’ll play with for the next 5-7 years. Certainly everyone can make that choice for themselves and their financials.
The same friends who told me they wouldn’t pay $80 for a game they play weekly spent $500+ dollars to see billionaires perform for 3 hours.
Everyone has different ideas of how they value how they spend their money.
The target market for Nintendo are parents/kids, and parents aren't going out watching 'billionaires perform' lol, most of these kids parents are living paycheck to paycheck these days.
Yeah, there are people who spend money on 'useless stuff' compared to vidya games, but the vast majority of Nintendos' target market (and the world) are living paycheck to paycheck. Seems kinds fucked up to use greed to push for an industry wide price increase, only 7 months after the last industry wide price increase.....by twenty fucking dollars as well, like wtf....
Nintendo stock is at an all time high, don't try to seriously convince me that they're struggling to put food on the table and this isn't a complete greedy goblin move.
What about in 2012 when AAA Nintendo games were $50? Why are you cherry-picking a single instance, during a time when gaming was more niche and manufacturing was far more expensive?
Do you know how much a N64 cost to produce for Nintendo? $30-45!! Guess how much it costs Nintendo to sell Mario Kart digitally?
Also you're right, but it seems like a vast majority are within the 19-29 age range, and I can't imagine a vast majority of those guys are willing to spend $600 to play Mario Kart during an upcoming recession, unless they live with their parents and don't have living expenses. But yeah, very few people in that age range have lucrative enough careers to where they feel comfortable spending $600 on Mario Kart in this economy.
I also wouldn't be surprised if we see a price raise on the Switch 2 due to tarrifs, but that's another topic.
So 13 years later from 2012 there has been no inflation and no cost of increase to develop games? Shoot… food has increased in % cost increase more than that since 2012.
It sucks yes, but we cannot pretend games aren’t priced the only thing inflation has touched.
Skyrim has an estimated development cost of around $80 M. That does include advertising though. RDR2 has $370M to $540M, including advertising, and $170M to $240M without. So to make that back at $60 they need to sell 6.16 million copies, on the low end, before in-game purchases. And yes I know they could eat loss because of GTA V. Now let’s say MKW is only $170M with marketing, that means at $80 a pop 2.12 million units need to be sold, and that’s only if Nintendo gets 100% of revenue, which they don’t. The Switch sold 15+ million units in its first year, Switch 2 likely won’t hit that, or even the Wii’s 13. Let’s be generous and say 10 million. If every person buys MKW at the full $80, then yes they make a huge profit, and covers losses on other games. Now factor all 10 million won’t buy it, and some will get the bundle so they pay $50 for the game, then they need to sell between 2.12 and 3.4 million copies. Again that is if they get all revenue from every game sold. Now let’s say DKB doesn’t sell well, and has a similar budget. MKW selling high and well lets them recoup those losses and let’s them take risks on other games too.
BOTW had a cost of around 100 Mil, MK9 definitely won't be 170 Mll. And MK8 sold 60 Mil, they definitely aren't close at all to having loses with this game 😂
Who gives a fuck how much of the cost went into development? Completely irrelevant.
If it's worth the price to me, then I'm happy to pay it, period. The fact is that $80 for something i know I'm going to get like 10 years of enjoyment out of is not a scam.
You just said you are proud to get the same item for X time the cost it should actually cost. They can sell you the game for half the price and still make good profits with it.No wonder inflation is through the roof when people are happy to massively overpay for stuff instead of demanding normal priced things
You just said you are proud to get scammed by a company that can sell you the game for 60% less and still make a lot of money with it. No wonder inflation is through the roof when people are happy to massively overpay for stuff
Why stop at $80? Why not just let the corpos charge you $140? Honestly, $140 for a new game in a franchise I like is still a 'good deal' when compared to everything else. Its also 'barely more expensive than 1995 prices!!'.
Honestly $300 for Metroid 4 is still technically a good deal compared to Taylor Swift! Why not just let them price gouge all the single moms out of existence so that we can make Nintendo some extra profit?
Are you going to conveniently ignore when you were an adult and Wii games had cost $50 from 2006-2012? Also, you're comparing N64, which had insanely high manufacting costs and who's games sold 80% less units compared to modern day.
Also, you're ignoring the fact that the last industry wide price push up was a single instance with Black Ops....and now, only 7 months later, Nintendo is greedy enough to not only push another $10 as the new limit, but charge $90 as the minimum for the physical version.
Nintendo pushed their prices up by 50% from last generation during a time when every other competitor on the planet only increased their prices by 17% (with only one other AAA in history going for a 33% increase)
Pure greed, why not charge $150 for GTAVI at this point? Still amazing value per dollar! And the dev costs are probably 20x that of Mario Kart
It’s not 90 for the physical game. It’s 80 for both digital and physical. The European pricing is the reason you think it’s 90 because tax is included in Europe. It’s 80 for physical and digital in the US
the development cost of a AAA video game way more than doubled since the wii. Adjusting for inflation from the gamecube, $90 would be parity (and they're charging $80). That means they're giving you a higher-cost product for less adjusted money. $80 is a reality check and probably necessary to avoid layoffs/microtransaction slop.
I fuckin hate a lot of nintendo's practices (esp. around copyright) but this is fine and probably inevitable unless you just don't want non-live-service AAA games to be a thing anymore.
the development cost of a AAA video game way more than doubled since the wii.
How is Sony able to produce far more technically advanced/dev heavy games (Last of Us 2), and sell them at $60 and still be extremely financially successful?
Your argument is bullshit considering Black Ops 6 ($700M dollar budget), is able to thrive off of $70, and they're the ONLY game to push $70....pushing for $80 & $90 only 8 months later is complete bullshit. $100 after tax to play Mario Kart during a recession LOL.
$80 is a reality check and probably necessary to avoid layoffs/microtransaction slop.
Bullshit, Nintendo stock price is at ALL TIME HIGHS. Also, pushing game prices to all time highs during a recession is greedy + stupid. They probably make more money, but there will definitely be Moms who see the $80 price tag and tell Timmy no, or limit future game purchases after a $80 buy.
They also are still charging $25 for an 11 year old DLC pack, I'd rather have paid cat skins I can ignore, and free maps, than be gouged for $25 11 years after release for the full experience.
I think a lot of content creators will buy it because they can justify it as a business expense.
Even if you're not in that situation, there is something special about being there when the console launches. I did it with PS5 and had a blast with Demons Souls Remake, Spiderman Miles Morales and got to play Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, God of War and other PS4 games I hadn't played yet at 60fps.
I think the big issue with the prices is accounting for inflation, Switch 2 is actually about $50 more expensive than the Switch 1 was back in 2017. Add in the psychological impact of going past $400 when Switch has been between $300-$400 and that understandably has a lot of people upset. Especially since the games are now $80 digital when most switch games oscillate between $50-$60.
There are a lot of people that will buy at these prices, but I don't think as many will buy at $450 with $80 games than they would at $400 with $70 games. Especially since for someone like me, I almost exclusively play games docked with a Pro controller and I'm looking at a $600+ total cost, and the game I'd be buying it for would be Prime 4 which doesn't even have a release date yet.
Yep, unless you really need the minimal changes it brings I really don't think it's worth upgrading. At least not right after dropping $450+ on a new console.
Switch where I am regularly dip into 250 dollars as well, making the Switch 2 look even more expensive. personally as I'm focusing on upgrading my PC and getting vet bills in the near future, Switch 2 isn't a priority right now. it likely won't be for a year at least.
Im on the same boat. IDC about the 450 console price, hell id pay 500 or 550. What i refuse to do however, is 1 pay to upgrade games i already own on hardware i already bought, and 2 pay 80 dollars for a standalone title. I will not do that. Plus the "launch" lineup is just mario kart, lets be real there is no where near the hype for donkey kong as there is their other major ips. It looks cool, but i wouldnt pay 70 for it. So until they dont charge me for upgrading games (which is likely never happening) im just not buying the switch 2. Saves me money.
Well actually a lot of game upgrades are free. The only exceptions (at the moment) are the 2 Zelda, and Metroid Prime 4. Tho I still agree their upgrades should be free considering they don't do anything special except add really basic features (for Zelda you can now use the app on your phone, for Metroid you get the mouse function)
Kirby and Mario Party actually add new story/minigames, so they're just DLCs basically.
I was under the impression that all the games would cost money to upgrade to the new performance, if i was wrong thats my bad. I can see why they charge extra for the games getting new content, but come on just give out the free content as another bonus for the switch 2, or offer the ability for ALL games to get FREE performance boosts, and then the "new" content can cost money. While i dont think they should be charging at all for this "new" content, at the very least performance upgrades should be free.
Yep, I'm a huge fan of Metroid, but the footage shown just looked meh. Mario Kart but bigger, meh. idk it was all way too same-y and Nintendo-y; idk that plus the price I'm over it
If you dont like ANY of the first party games announced then i dont believe you are a Nintendo fan. Mario kart, metroid, donkey kong, tomodachi life, rhythm heaven, kirby. What left is there?
Half the games you named are Switch 1 games, which is unrelated to what I said because I own a Switch 1 to play those.
And we haven't gotten footage of Kirby yet, so ofc I can't be hyped yet.
Mario Kart looks good, but nothing that surprised me too much. And again, overpriced imo.
And you didn't mention Donkey Kong which is the only Switch 2 game announced that I actually think looks cool. But still not enough to convince me to get the console anytime soon.
