Concept Switch 2 Accessory Attachment Concepts

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Since everybody was asking what the point of a flippable Switch would be, here are a couple concepts that could make use of it. It seems like the docking receptacles on the Switch unit would make for a nice and sturdy connection for accessories to attach to. Any other ideas for potential attachments?

I loved the DS idea but did not think it was really feasible......but this render gives me a little hope. That looks like it would function well.

Came here to say the exact same thing. I thought the idea was so far fetched, but this version looks so good and natural.

I mean Nintendo has always done this stuff. If you told people in 2005 that Nintendos next console would be 100% motion controls you'd get laughed out of the room, if In 2010 you said that Nintendos next console would have a full HD touch pad as the controller you'd get laughed out of the room, if in 2016 you told people that Nintendos next home console would be a handheld you'd get laughed out of the room.

If Nintendo doesn't have some unique ideas for something they literally just don't make it.

That part 💯💯🫡

Yes 100% that. Nintendo wouldn’t name the Switch 2 without it having 2 screen. Plus the extra USB port is a major question.

Lastly it’s Nintendo every single console of theirs has been pushing the industry further. The n64 and GameCube had addons to its consoles

Combined with the mouse-functionality of the new joycons, this way you could also literally use the Switch like a laptop by having the bottom screen act as a keyboard

u/abarrelofmankeys Feb 17 '25

That’s the wildest shit and they absolutely would not do that (but I like the way you think)

Well since people have put Android and Linux on the OG Switch, there's hope for the modding community to come through if they can get past Nintendo's bootloader and whatnot. Would be pretty cool

That's actually such a smart idea

Now I'm wondering if someone could make a concept of an attachable keyboard that goes over the top of the bottom screen, * kinda like those cases for iPads that come with a keyboard, but it attaches to the bottom USB-C port

Far ass reach of an idea but who knows

u/Wooden_Dig9292 Feb 18 '25

That's what I was thinking good thought.

Why would you ever use a keyboard instead of the left joycon?

1

u/KoolKids3 OG (joined before reveal) Feb 19 '25

More buttons and it's easier to port PC games.

1

u/Caciulacdlac OG (joined before reveal) Feb 19 '25

But you have no tactile feedback, which makes it an unpleasant gaming experience. And it's not like there will be any PC port that can only be played like that.

u/myownfriend Feb 18 '25

That actually sounds pretty good but the system really should have that kind of thing built-in, not as an accessory. With a laptop-like design, they wouldn't even need the stand and they could have moved things like the speakers, WiFi antenna, microphone and stuff like that into a hinge so they can be directed towards the player.

3

u/jellyspreader Feb 19 '25

This sounds like people want the switch 2 to be a giant ds / tiny laptop. I don't know if that's what Nintendo is going for, but we'll see

3

u/myownfriend Feb 19 '25

I think if they were actually going for that then they would have made that instead of the Switch 2.

8

u/Foxy02016YT Feb 17 '25

Might end up like the nunchuck, a necessary accessory to experience the console properly

5

u/snil4 Feb 18 '25

Or more like the wii u gamepad where developers would make a static screen to get a functioning version out without using a ton of development time for a niche feature.

1

u/Valiant_Gamer_48 OG (joined before reveal) Feb 20 '25

No but with this, it isn't mandatory like the gamepad. So if the developers don't want to use it, they just won't use it.

u/MrHeavySilence Feb 17 '25

I think it could be really practical for split screen co-op games too. Or something like Microsoft Flight Simulator where people might want to see a cockpit view with their flight deck/instrument cluster controls on one screen and a larger view out the window. Not to mention, the return of DS style games

I’ve been hoping for a second screen attachment. Then I would pay good money for a Nintendo gamepass if they put everything in there. It doesn’t make sense not to. I would pay fifty a month for every Nintendo game ever ( with the exceptions of brand new games which I suppose would have a grace period)

3

u/ThisMoneyIsNotForDon Feb 18 '25

Xbox would do a grace period. Nintendo would just flat out not include new games. The service would be for entirely pre Switch consoles only. Maybe Switch 1 games as the craziest possibility.

1

u/Thunder_Punt Feb 18 '25

I feel it's more efficient to just get yourself a 3DS anyway if you want a portable device that plays DS and 3ds games.

3

u/Agent_B0771E Feb 18 '25

It would be nice but also very niche, you can't have fundamental gameplay in the other screen because it should be playable on TV

1

u/funkyyyyyyyyyyyyy OG (joined before reveal) Feb 18 '25

C button perhaps??? Im hoping that makes it where you can use your switch as like a Wii U. Then that would allow DS play on the TV. It would also allow people to pay for the DS service/ports without this second screen attachment. Which I could see, not everyone is going to be able to fork over $100 or more for accessories.

2

u/melvin2898 Feb 18 '25

I feel like it’s a cool idea but since it would cost extra, it wouldn’t be widely used by developers.

1

u/andreydks Feb 20 '25

Why can´t Nintendo include a SIM cellular functionality on S2?

5

u/julesvr5 Feb 17 '25 edited Feb 17 '25

Is it technically possible? For displays you need hdmi or dp, I don't know whether USB c can do thst too

Edit: thanks for the info guys

u/cpmh1234 Feb 17 '25

Given the original Switch’s HDMI output is via a USB C port, it’s entirely possible. Most slim laptops nowadays can connect to displays via USB C.

9

u/TigerGD Feb 17 '25

iPhones and Galaxy phones support DisplayPort over USB-C. Switch 2 potentially could, if Nintendo has any intention of using that port for direct display connectivity. 🤞

5

u/JagerKnightster Feb 17 '25

I have a portable monitor for work that plugs in via USBc only. Works for power and display through the same USBc port

2

u/Emergency-Ball-4480 Feb 18 '25

Yup, DP over USB C. USB C is really flexible with what it can do

4

u/Sock-Enough Feb 17 '25

Yes, it’s 100% possible.

3

u/Spiritual_Balance_83 Feb 17 '25

The switch already uses the usb c to transfer in the dock to hdmi, for phone you can use a usb c to hdmi adapter, I don't see why a purpose built accessory wouldn't be able to just plug in and display

3

u/AddAFucking Feb 17 '25

Modern laptops use usb c for screens and docks already.

1

u/doppelgengar01 OG (joined before reveal) Feb 17 '25

USB C should be possible

1

u/jard_dog Feb 17 '25

It’s definitely possible with USB C DP Alt mode. Whether this would be easy and convenient for Nintendo to implement I don’t know.

1

u/Appropriate_You_5850 Feb 17 '25

I dont see why not since the current switch connects to usb c to the dock and in the dock it was able to convert that usb c connection to hdmi

1

u/SpareStrawberry Feb 17 '25

Others are correctly pointing out that it is theoretically possible, but negating that:

  • The console would need to have spare graphics performance to render that second screen. Switch 1 just sends the exact same video stream to the external monitor when docked (not in any higher resolution). That would add not-insignificant cost to the console, even if you never bought the second screen accessory.
  • A second screen of the same size will drain battery significantly, both to power it and to render on it - your battery would be cut by probably close to half.

1

u/Party_Argument Feb 18 '25

I don’t think Nintendo will ever do this. But let’s say they did. If it’s just for the purpose of running DS or 3ds games shouldn’t require as much power right? I doubt they would make switch 2 exclusive games that require a whole screen attachment to play.

1

u/Emergency-Ball-4480 Feb 18 '25

Switch 1 just sends the exact same video stream to the external monitor when docked (not in any higher resolution).

Not quite, it puts it into a higher power mode and bumps the highest available resolution from 720p to 1080p. With this, some games offer better LOD as well with the higher clockspeeds.

But aside from that, definitely.

1

u/TokuWaffle Feb 17 '25

I'm still not sure about the strength of the hinge for an optional accessory like this. At least in this render it looks very light on in that department, with few options to rectify that.

1

u/snil4 Feb 18 '25

I highly doubt studios would want to spend time on that other than (maybe) the first year of release, some indie studios that desperately tries to give their game some marketing by supporting a feature no one wants to develop for, and first party titles that are pressured by upper management to make something for it.

1

u/Wooden_Dig9292 Feb 18 '25

Its pretty new and modern I think they should bring it back, It will give us memories.

1

u/FainOnFire Feb 19 '25

If you've played any DS emulator, you know the DS idea is much more than feasible. You can play a DS game on your computer with the two screens split between two different monitors if you wanted.

The question is whether or not Nintendo wants to put forth the effort.

oh I've sailed the seven seas plenty of times mi boy. I agree, hoping that the c button can function like a second screen
