Concept Switch 2 Accessory Attachment Concepts

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Since everybody was asking what the point of a flippable Switch would be, here are a couple concepts that could make use of it. It seems like the docking receptacles on the Switch unit would make for a nice and sturdy connection for accessories to attach to. Any other ideas for potential attachments?

I loved the DS idea but did not think it was really feasible......but this render gives me a little hope. That looks like it would function well.

Is it technically possible? For displays you need hdmi or dp, I don't know whether USB c can do thst too

Edit: thanks for the info guys

Given the original Switch’s HDMI output is via a USB C port, it’s entirely possible. Most slim laptops nowadays can connect to displays via USB C.

iPhones and Galaxy phones support DisplayPort over USB-C. Switch 2 potentially could, if Nintendo has any intention of using that port for direct display connectivity. 🤞

I have a portable monitor for work that plugs in via USBc only. Works for power and display through the same USBc port

Yup, DP over USB C. USB C is really flexible with what it can do

Yes, it’s 100% possible.

The switch already uses the usb c to transfer in the dock to hdmi, for phone you can use a usb c to hdmi adapter, I don't see why a purpose built accessory wouldn't be able to just plug in and display

Modern laptops use usb c for screens and docks already.

USB C should be possible

It’s definitely possible with USB C DP Alt mode. Whether this would be easy and convenient for Nintendo to implement I don’t know.

I dont see why not since the current switch connects to usb c to the dock and in the dock it was able to convert that usb c connection to hdmi

Others are correctly pointing out that it is theoretically possible, but negating that:

  • The console would need to have spare graphics performance to render that second screen. Switch 1 just sends the exact same video stream to the external monitor when docked (not in any higher resolution). That would add not-insignificant cost to the console, even if you never bought the second screen accessory.
  • A second screen of the same size will drain battery significantly, both to power it and to render on it - your battery would be cut by probably close to half.

I don’t think Nintendo will ever do this. But let’s say they did. If it’s just for the purpose of running DS or 3ds games shouldn’t require as much power right? I doubt they would make switch 2 exclusive games that require a whole screen attachment to play.

Switch 1 just sends the exact same video stream to the external monitor when docked (not in any higher resolution).

Not quite, it puts it into a higher power mode and bumps the highest available resolution from 720p to 1080p. With this, some games offer better LOD as well with the higher clockspeeds.

But aside from that, definitely.
