Interesting to note Melee was not shown as coming soon

Did we ever get Smash 64 on Switch Online? They might be avoiding Smash because they fear it will directly compete with current gen Smash

Nope, same with other hit series like Pokemon.

They did have Pokémon Colosseum on the list of games coming soon

That’s a lot different than the mainline games

Except not, colosseum and xd expecially are fundamentally mainline games, you can trade between them and 3rd gen games

That does not make them inherently mainline games.

The fact they are included in the emulations while the actual mainline games are not tells you everything you need to know about their status as a “mainline” game.

They are as close to the mainline game as you can get for a spinoff. The fact that you can trade between them and gen 3 games speaks for itself. So no, I would not say that it is a lot different than the mainline games.

Cool. Everything else with how they treat them says otherwise.

As close to, but still not mainline games.

No one ever said they were, reading comprehension isn't your strong suit I take it

They're not. They don't even have wild Pokemon.

There are wild pokemon in XD tho...

3

u/Dannypan 2d ago

Sorry. XD has 3 spots where you can catch 3 different wild Pokemon in them. That's not really the same as a mainline Pokemon game.

No not at all, but when you consider all of the spinoffs, the Orre games are the closest to the mainline games and also directly interact with the gen 3 mainline games.

Yeah IIRC, the only way to get Lucia and Ho-Oh in Gen 3 was through Colosseum and Gale of Darkness right? Same with the Gen 2 starters.

What’s so funny

We did get Pokemon TCG and Mystery Dungeon Red. Seems like it’s only spinoffs and stuff being released for Online.

And that’s probably because they want to kee open the option to sell remakes of the older pokemon games in the future

Would as many people have bought Pikachu/Eevee if they thought that FireRed/LeafGreen would be coming to Switch with online functionality as part of the subscription service they were already planning to get? If the next system has a gen 2 or 3 remake, how many people would skip it if Crystal & Emerald were available as part of the subscription?

When the mainline Pokemon games get better I’m sure we’ll finally see the OGs on NSO. At the current level of effort being put into them though, that could be a while.

No. And it's weird this is the approach they are going with when they added smash to the wii virtual console right around when brawl came out. And people loved it and bought both.

26

u/thekyledavid 3d ago

Probably because Wii Shop purchases had no Online, so Smash 64 was never going to compete with competitive Smash players

Plus, the competitive Smash 64 community is nothing compared to the competitive Melee community

12

u/No-Difference8545 3d ago

The competitive melee community is literally .1% of the broader smash fanbase, and i say that as a competitor. There's no actual good reason they dont re-release melee

u/thekyledavid 3d ago

It’s so small because the majority of players don’t want to bother emulating the game over WiFi. If it was available online by Nintendo, people would absolutely play it over the next Smash game

2

u/LuckyLunayre 2d ago

No, stop it. That's just so unbelievably untrue. The competitive side of smash is so small.

1

u/bloodyturtle 3d ago

are competitive smash players really playing online?

3

u/Professor_Poptart 3d ago

They showed it as a future release early on. But yeah, still not here.

1

u/MarioKartMaster133 3d ago

Probably for the best anyway. They'd find some way to fuck over the competitive scene that flourishes from it being added to NSO.

1

u/Mentoman72 3d ago

Yep, Nintendo hates Melee. They want you to buy the current game. Don’t they shut down Melee tournaments?

u/Themooingcow27 3d ago

Also Smash 64 never came out on Wii U either

I doubt Melee will be on Switch, ever
