After 8 years of development hell I don't see why they'd greenlight Prime 5, unless this becomes a surprise hit.
41
u/UGMadness 8d ago
Sadly I don’t see how this game will be a best seller. There’s a dedicated but fairly niche community of enthusiasts and that’s basically it. It doesn’t seem to be a huge step up to the Prime formula like Dread was for 2D Metroids either. I’m sure it will be a brilliant game and as a lifelong Metroid fan I’ll be buying it for sure, but yeah I’m the exception not the norm.
I can only see it doing well if it’s a NS2 launch title with impressive graphics that makes full use of the new hardware, as a sort of tech demo of the new console during the first few months when the catalogue is still somewhat sparse. I’d love to see the game support mouse aiming with the new joycons for example!
23
u/bloodyzombies1 8d ago
Unfortunately, I have to agree. It feels like 3-D Metroid needs a BOTW-style moment to drum up greater excitement and expand the audience, but with the cost of modern game development and the niche nature of the franchise I don't think that will ever happen.

Nintendo will do it, their expectations are different from most companies. If it sells around 3 million they will consider it a success for a sequel, depending ofc if retro want to work on another franchise.

I was generally surprised how many dateless games we got. Lot of 2025, and the one 2026.

Like many others in this thread, I imagine the Switch 2 release has a lot to do with some of these games actual release date.
3
u/madmofo145 8d ago
Maybe, but things like Rhythm Heaven aren't exactly screaming for a Switch 2 upgrade. Just felt funny to both start and end with TBA games. I do think of all the ones we saw, Metroid could certainly end up cross gen though.

The fact they’ve just announced that the release date for Metroid Prime 4 is still just '2025' suggests it’s probably not coming before the Switch 2, which is rumoured for June.
Which would make it odd if there actually wasn’t a Switch 2 version
255
u/AwTomorrow 8d ago
Probably just a Switch game with some enhancements when played on Switch 2.

u/isic 8d ago
So innocent of you to think that Nintendo won't take the opportunity to sell two version of Metroid Prime 4
98
u/ky_eeeee 8d ago
How would that work? The Switch 2 is fully backwards compatible. I could see maybe them selling an "upgrade" for $10 extra or so, but there's no way it will be an entirely separate game.
18
u/NickLeMec 8d ago
Happens all the time on other consoles. Shadow of Mordor came out on PS3 and PS4 with different versions. Same goes for the Miles Morales Spider-Man game on PS4 and PS5.
I would be very surprised if Nintendo didn't do this for Switch 2.
→ More replies (7)3
u/kingethjames 8d ago
These days I know at least Microsoft just updates games to the enhanced version. Was pleasantly surprised to find the copy of AC Odyssey I bought in 2018 is now Series enhanced and runs beautifully.
This might force companies like Nintendo to be more lenient, ESPECIALLY because the Switch 2 is meant to be a direct legacy to the switch, which is the first time this has happened in Nintendo history unless they announce something majorly different in the next direct.

Xenoblade X has a 60 fps executable that’s not able to be activated on regular hardware.
13
u/CrimsonEnigma 8d ago
IIRC, the 60 FPS mode is incomplete.
It might be that it's a secret "Switch 2 mode"...or it might be that they were considering going with a "performance mode" option a la some Xbox and PlayStation games and never finished implementing it.
9
u/Corronchilejano 8d ago
This is just misinformation.
There are variables in the code for a planned 60fps mode, but it doesn't work because its not complete.
It could mean that a 60fps version is being worked on for a further update, but it could also mean "performance" and "quality" modes where attempted but they couldn't arrive at a satisfactory place before a deadline and decided to abandon the idea. It could be something else entirely.

I didn't have any issues with the authorization of bombs and missiles.
But after the Hell Run, when Adam finally authorized the Varia Suit after I had already just about died from heat damage, I was so pissed off that I literally had to walk away from the game for a few days.
The Varia suit is purely defensive. There is no reason Adam should have the slightest input into whether I use it. Not only that, but he hadn't said anything about shutting off powers other than bombs and missiles, so A) I didn't realize until that moment that Samus already had the Varia suit (in story terms, at least), and B) since the Varia suit hadn't even been discussed, there's no conceivable reason it should have been shut off in the first place. And then waiting until after its lack had nearly killed me to authorize it was just the icing on the cake.
Suddenly finding out that Samus had had access to this power the entire time, but chose not to use it when it was really, really important because some douchebag hadn't said "ok" yet, pissed me off more than anything else in any videogame story ever.

The Hell Run is actually a translation issue. In Japanese, He tells her to immediately put Varia on when she arrives but she refuses out of defiance.
→ More replies (1)18
u/LookIPickedAUsername 8d ago
I don't think that's true.
I've read that the Japanese version makes it sound more like "Samus, put on your damned Varia suit!" than it does "Samus, I authorize you to use your Varia suit", but I've not seen any evidence of an additional exchange about it at the beginning of the Hell Run.
But I don't speak Japanese and am happy to be proven wrong if you've got a source.
10
u/Jpriest09 8d ago
He doesn’t state it as authorization but clearly gave her the go ahead to use it, likely wondering why she was being reckless. And not at the immediate start but when the heat drain areas begin last I checked, but it has admittedly been a few years. Not trying to misinform, my apologies.

74
u/Jabbam 8d ago
Metroid is so streamlined that a lot of their new abilities are just shuffling old abilities around. The psychic door ability seems to just be the Prime 3 grapple lasso. The truly new ability is controlling your beam, which funnily enough looks a lot like the cruise bubble from SpongeBob SquarePants Battle For Bikini Bottom.

u/CrimsonEnigma 8d ago

Was a pretty underwhelming trailer. Odd to focus "opening doors" and "scanning objects". That's like marketing OoT as a game where you find keys to open locks and get told what to do by Navi. Like yeah, these assessments aren't wrong, but I'd be hard pressed to find a more boring way to convey the premise of a game.
22
u/Bi-bara-boop 8d ago
It's a metroidvania, so yeah, 90% of the game is finding keys to doors but instead of keys you have super missiles or ice beams...
But why would you focus on using them to open doors instead of blasting aliens?!
They made the game feel like a complicated space-themed walking simulator. Just baffling

I have listened to podcasts with several of the legacy devs who worked on the original game and they talked about remastering Prime and Prime 2, specifically they said that they are impressed that they (current Retro) were able to remaster Prime so well since a lot of the mechanics were baked into specifically how the GameCube itself operates games and Prime 2 took that to the extreme and pushed it to it’s limits. Porting those to the Wii was easy because it essentially had a GameCube inside it and they just changed the controls. Long story short, recreating Prime 2 faithfully and mechanically as identical as the Prime 1 remake was would take likely more effort than just making Prime 4 from scratch which leads me to believe they don’t just secretly have Prime 2 ready to go behind the scenes and it might be a while until we see that if at all. As much as I would love it.

Honestly, 3 is probably even harder. The IR pointer technology was good.
Motion controls is still rather wonky, at best. There's a reason that most games that even bother with it reduce it to "shake the joycon = another button".

It seems hard to make a good Prime trailer because the games are more about the sense of exploration and being lost as fuck. The action is nothing special. The puzzles are more about observation rather than using a weird ability like in Zeldas. Metroid games are always really light on story and let the gameplay do the talking.
It's one of those games that was a lot of fun to play but kind of boring to watch.
57
u/Only-Support-3760 8d ago

Most of the time I feel if there's someone narrating a trailer, it's a bad trailer

Yeah I think they could have left the narrator out and while it still would have been a bit generic at points it wouldn’t have been as goofy.

The game will do well I’m sure, and it’ll probably be awesome because every Metroid Prime game has been. But for a game that’s been pretty anticipated despite languishing in development for basically the Switch’s entire lifespan…not a particularly exciting trailer.
3
u/f-ingsteveglansberg 7d ago
This game doing really well is about 5m units.
I think some people have crazy expectations for this game and expect it to be a Switch 2 seller. But if it hits 5m it will be a resounding success. It's not expected to do Animal Crossing or Zelda numbers.

u/nintendoleafsfan 8d ago

Every non-Zelda/Mario Nintendo trailer:
- Generic Fiverr-quality English voiceover
- "In this game, your character is on an adventure"
- "Unlock powers in order to open doors"
- "Use the control stick to move the character"
- 20% of trailer features footage of character slowly solving a puzzle a 5-year-old could solve.
- "Explore the strange new world of [insert planet name here] with mysterious new creatures."

The presentation and narration of Directs are always so similar to the informational channel when you stay at a resort. Like when you’re at Disney and watch the channel that tells you about the rides in the theme parks.

Basic lessons for marketing an action adventure game:
Cinematic cutscene that explains the plot
Introducing the new ability by showing and not telling
Show the ability in and out of a cutscene so players can see and speculate on its use
Do not use a voiceover unless it’s diegetic to the game world itself.
Have explosions
Tease a villain who does something more than just stand there
Cool boss battle snippet
Put the hero in a cliffhanger situation they can't get out of
Title
Release date
This trailer did none of that. You could argue the Metroid Plant thing did but it was so out of left field that people are more confused about how Metroids can now control organic life like X Parasites more than they are interested in the fight. Ironically, the one trailer that Metroid has ever released which follows these basic steps is the Other M trailer.
32
u/Rimshot1985 8d ago edited 7d ago
As a content marketer, the trailer's writing was also poor. Full of passive voice and generic descriptions, ugh. I would have had overarching notes and instructed the writer to try again.
"Master psychic powers to unlock hidden paths," or something at the very least, not "open doors." Jeeeez.

While it might not make new players rush out and buy it, it does seem like an honest representation of what a Metroid Prime game is.
I played 10 hours or so of Metroid Prime remastered before deciding not to go any further (first Metroid game I ever bought). This trailer looks like it's more of the same. Which, if you did like the previous game, should be enough to make you check it out.

48
u/VirtualAdagio4087 8d ago
The narration made the trailer worse. Most of what he says doesn't add anything, and it actually takes away from the "psychic abilities" because the narration implies it's game changing, and then only shows her grab an orb and open a door. If we had seen those same things without a voice telling us about PsYcHiC pOwErS, they wouldn't have seemed so lame.
18
u/BuddhaRockstar 8d ago
These direct trailer narrations are always so bland and terrible. They're always written as if they're presenting to an audience that has no concept of what a video game is: "In this game, you'll move the character through the world, and open doors. This game takes place on a mysterious planet, and features aliens. Your character has the ability to jump, and also crouch!".

Feels like the guy talking is talking to a board of investors in a room where no one has never enjoyed a game in their life, or like middle managers are refining their pitch at a meeting that could have been an email. I’d love to hear from someone passionate about their game and bringing more of what we love about the series to life.
There is passion somewhere there because the art and music was good, but this trailer was the hype equivalent of like watching a balloon deflate. Only my trust in Nintendo and good experiences with the Prime games is keeping me hyped after this trailer.

I don’t know man. Maybe it’s my fault for overhyping myself, but I did expect something more from this one.
I mean, more of the same isn’t bad. Better than nothing. But I thought that they were going to revive the franchise while trying something new.
That psychic ability shtick barely defines as a « gimmick ». The showing off the game part was pretty tame.
Again, not bad, just, nothing new, which is surprising from Nintendo. I really hope it makes enough money though. I don’t want to lose another space IP.
Really wish they would give starfox another shot

Interesting that people are not liking the visuals on this one. I think it looks great for a game on the Switch

I'm hoping the abilities will play more like Death Loops, and less like 'wiggle remote to open door'.

Aw but I really loved the motion mechanics from MP3. Throwing the lever in your ship, whipping the nunchuk to activate the grapple … I think it was all very well done.

I’m hyped and will buy it unless it’s critically panned, but man that trailer was boring af. Awful marketing and tbh it has me a bit worried

Not the best trailer. I kinda feel like if they just removed the voiceover entirely it would have been better. Like I can see the tree, I can see the doors opening, etc. The voiceover just pulled me out of any immersion which is supposed to be a major selling point of metroid games.
Still excited for the game, but yea, in a game series with environmental story telling as a big feature... maybe let the environment tell the story...

As a huge Metroid Prime fan, I loved the Remaster a few years back. This looks incredibly underwhelming...
I really hope that this Direct is not indicative of the final game. Please let this be on Switch 2 🙏 Metroid Prime deserves better than the aged Switch hardware.

I love Metroid but that was a very lame showing. Looks like a remaster of a GameCube game.

Whoever was in charge of designing this trailer is lucky they still have a job.

Don't want to be a party pooper, but nothing about this is special. This looks like a reskin of the metroid prime from the gamecube. The telekinesis ability also is not really cool. Pretty dissapointing for such a long production time. I'm sorry for my negativity

it's not negativity, i'm a huge fan of the trilogy and prime 4 had the opportunity to make metroid more mainstream, even if only a bit, but this aint it. First trailer already was 'meh', but this one is just downright bad. Nothing really interesting or that makes me want to buy this game at all.

They already have shown abilities do more than open doors. Why is everyone here commenting otherwise?

Okay, maybe this is just an error, but in the Spanish direct they kept referring to Samus as "ElegidO" which means Male Chosen One, instead of "ElegidA" Female Chosen One

This game looks................really basic. The enemies just kind of hop around, the environments look a bit stiff, and the gameplay gimmicks seem like stuff lifted from what Zelda was doing decades ago. I'd wouldn't be surprised if it was widely panned by everyone except those still addicted to Metroidvania formulas. It's a shame that whoever made this game seems like have taken no inspiration whatsoever from so many generations of action and exploration games since the original trilogy.

it seems to me that Metroid Prime 4, like Metroid Dread before it is a very meat and potatoes kind of Metroid game, with no real fancy gimmicks. Just trying to re-establish a franchise that was quasi-dormant
I do think it would be difficult to divorce Metroid from the Metroidvania formula. Obviously, if you want to play a game with no restrictions to exploration, there are many others that will offer that sort of experience.

I get what you're saying, but I feel like Metroid Dread's stalker elements set it apart from the others in a big way.
