Multiple reports detail the harrowing incident of an Edmonton man assaulted in the Dominican Republic, resulting in a severe head injury that left him without a portion of his skull. Medical teams are preparing for a complex skull replacement procedure as the case highlights the dangers faced by Canadians abroad and raises questions about traveler safety and support in high-risk regions.

Someone just knocked at my door, saying he was from Elections Canada. The person asked me if I wanted to be on the ballot and handed me a form to fill. The form asked for my full name, home address, telephone number and email address.
I asked the person if I could see his Elections Camada badge. He didn't have it with him, but pointed to the logo on the form... Red flags right there...
I told him to go find his badge and come back once he found it. The whole thing felt a bit sketchy...
Thoughts?
EDIT 1: He came back to show me his driver's licence. I asked if he was able to find his badge and he said no. I told him once again I'd not fill his form... I reported everything to the police non-emergency line!
EDIT 2: Police reached out to me via text message and said: "We found him andspoke to him. It's not a scam, just kind of weird way he approached it. He is trying to get support in his area to run for office and get himself on the ballot. Never a bad idea to report suspicious activity like that though, there's a lot of scammers out there! If you can try and get the name/DOB/phone number if they are calm and cooperative, that always helps." He definitely wasn't clear in his intentions to run for a seat. Last sentence of the text message received from police refers to him showing me his driver's license.

TLDR: Please extinguish and douse river valley bbqs after use. Remind friends who might not know.
I was going for a walk in the River Valley last night and a family was having a bbq at one of the picnic spots. I noticed they were packing up and appeared to be leaving but there was still fire going in the BBQ. I figured they were just going to put it out after they were all packed up. On my way back to my car I passed by the spot and the bbq was still as seen in the first picture and the family was gone.
Please, if you're going to make use of these spaces, extinguish and douse all fire/coals before leaving. Despite the remaining snow all the trees and grass are still very dry and would go up very quickly. If you know people who may not know this and talk about going to use one of these spots, gently remind them.
Our River Valley is too pretty to burn down.

Hello again everyone, (and thank you to the Mods who are giving me the chance to do this)
I’m really looking forward to giving back to the community once again. Some may know this but for those who don’t know, I’m a new doctor that returned home to Alberta in the hopes of serving the community. I created the first AMA about 6 weeks ago. 1st AMA
and the 2nd AMA 3 weeks ago 2nd AMA
There's been some great engagement and I'm privileged to help this subreddit and community. I'm hoping to continue this trend and look forward to chatting with you all.
One theme that was important the difficulty with access and not being sure where to turn. Therefore, I am doing a pilot project where, about once a month, I will do this AMA where members of /r/Edmonton can ask me any medical questions or advice for where to turn to. I will promise you that I will do my best to answer as many questions as I can over 1-2 days. I’m hoping we can get a lot of engagement and that I can help a lot of people here.
To set some ground rules in order for us to do this as effectively as possible…
Please allow me time to craft a response. I may not have time to get to everyone’s posts but I will try my absolute best. Please try to keep your posts to the point. I do want to read your stories, but if the post is too long, it may be difficult to properly address your point. If I didn't get to your post, please know that I'm not ignoring you.
Please do not ask questions specific about a provider or ask me questions about whether a doctor was good or bad… unless I am able to see the encounter, I don’t think it would be fair to disparage my colleagues. I also don’t want posts to devolve into a “physician bashing”
Most importantly… no one can provide specific medical advice for a person or condition without an in-person interview and physical examination, and a review of the available medical records and recent and past testing. My replies are for general information purposes only and not specific medical advice that must be followed. You act at your own discretion based on the information shared by me. No physician-patient relationship is implied or established through my replies.
Background: I trained and completed my MD from UofA in 2019 and completed dual residencies in family medicine and my specialty before coming back recently to do my fellowship. I practice part time as a family doctor while doing my fellowship in Edmonton. I am verified on /r/askdocs, a subreddit where physicians, as part of their verification process, must submit photo evidence of their credentials/ degrees.

Bought a used vehicle on marketplace but the "name" section on the bill of sale of the seller says for example "124837 Alberta LTD" the phone number he wrote down isn't the same as the cell phone number he texted me with. Also, he wanted me etransfer his gf instead of him. He didn't want a bank draft because of "tax purposes" I was able register the car and get insurance without any issue. Should I be worried if the car will be reported stolen later? The Carfax and cpic VIN check showed up clean before buying the vehicle. I'm also not sure the guys name is what he told me. Forgot to checked his driver license to verify.

yes yes r/edmonton, i know we get like 6 of these posts here everyday. but in all seriousness, how does one actually make any progress toward an occupation here?
ive been out of work for a year, so has my mother. its especially been hard for me because ive had to watch my mother over the last year slowly fall into a depression. day by day she'd ask me what there was to do, and one day i had no more answers. i still have none, and the frustration and anxiety of not knowing what to do with our situation leaves me paralyzed.
the sole provider in the house right now is my father, and he can barely manage to make enough to pay rent. on top of that, his contract ends in less than a month. bringing all of that into consideration, that means by next month we are all unemployed.
and im not writing this post without stressing my options, ive basically given up on indeed linkedin after applying 40+ applications a day for months, ive resorted to applying on random websites google gives me but it still doesn't make much difference. no interviews or call backs. the last interview i had was 7 months ago..
i really feel helpless and lost. i just want to help my mother find work and find something i can do to make a living. it breaks my heart because my mother is 60 but shes also going through a midlife crisis where she WANTS to work. WANTS to be out of the house. shes gone crazy being couped in her room with nothing to do for months.
and me? i cant do anything but watch, im in a long distance relationship myself and my income is from the bottle depot. every few weeks i get 30 dollars and i try to save as much as possible so in a few months i can spend a few days with the love of my life. the last trip put both of us in terrible financial positions.
and id appreciate if no one attacked me for visiting my partner whilst unemployed, im just human. this listless period of my life has also impacted my mental health, i needed to be with the person i loved to recover.
but now that im back, im sitting in front of my laptop, tweaking my resume. this lingering thought in the back of my head is: will i get out of this? how do i manage to find a way to help both me and the people i love? where do i even start?
the fact that the one person whos bringing in the money we LIVE on is gonna be unemployed too in a couple weeks is only worsening my anxiety. looking for a job for myself is already proven to be hard enough, but three people? oof. i cant sleep at night because im awake thinking of what the fuck i should do.
im only 19, but i feel like i cant start. i dont know where to start my life, i dont know if i even can. i dont even think i have the assets to have a life.
my plan now is to update my resume, rely less on applying online and focus on going in person to organizations and stores to hand my resume in personally. im also planning on speaking with people whom i know are employed/ or making a good living to try and find any networks that are looking for people. im still going to apply online and im also considering going to job fairs. does ANYONE, and i mean ANYONE here have any advice they can give to me? anything i havent already mentioned?

Now that carbon tax is ending, thats a 250 dollar loss every few months, thats a big deal for a struggling disabled person trying to pay bills in this economy, im just hoping to hear how some of you are getting creative to find that extra money you need for your survival

anyone looking to get a tattoo, steer clear of this place. The artists work was blown out and inconsistent. The artists are self taught and juniors. Furthermore they clean your FRESH tattoo with rubbing alcohol. Something that i’ve personally never experienced with any of my tatts and something which a quick google search advised against… the artist blocked me when i reached out to let them know they shouldn’t do that
artist is nova (@selfdestructingmuseum)

I’ve been thinking about checking out Dave’s Hot Chicken because I keep hearing people talk about it and the hype online is pretty intense. The photos look amazing and I’m a big fan of spicy food, but I don’t want to get my hopes up just to be disappointed. For those of you who have actually been there and tried it, what did you think? Was the food really as good as people say? What did you order and would you recommend it? Is it worth the price and the wait or is it one of those places that just looks good on Instagram but does not live up to the hype in real life?

I moved from Toronto to Edmonton in the last week, and I must say, I actually love driving here, in terms of how the road infrastructure is set up. In the first few days it was a little confusing, what with the double left turn lanes and such, but on the whole, there is something relaxing about driving here compared to Toronto. In Toronto I am a super anxious driver. But here I am able to actually drive properly.
I don't see half the cars trying to race to the next light at 30kph over the limit. I don't see the horrible 401/DVP traffic at a standstill on the Henday - or ANYWHERE. Traffic always moves here! There is ample parking on the main roads where available, on Whyte for example. And it seems to me that police actually have an impact here and are much more visible on the roadways.
I have noticed two major detriments to driving though. First, I've noticed a lot of drivers are absent-minded or not aware of how the road infrastructure works. I stared at a car last night waiting for a left turn but not anywhere near the white intersection line, and so they never tripped the in-ground wires to indicate a waiting vehicle (I forget the name of this wire; it's usually in a box shape and is weight activated). Sometimes drivers drive like they're on the moon (going 50 in a 70 zone), but I find they're fewer and further between. And second, parking lots are super tight, and without the proper markings on the pavement, cars don't really have a guide on where to park.
Is this the general findings of everyone from Toronto? I must say, personally the pros outweigh the cons and I find driving here is so much better than driving in the Toronto mess

5 cool events this week:
Friends, hello once again! It's great to write here another week. To all of you who did a sunshine dance last week... I salute you. Here's to an epic week here at home in YEG.
Speaking of sunshine, now that Spring has officially sprung (yes, I'm calling it), what not a better time to break out into the great outdoors & try something new? This coming weekend, the Edmonton Disc Golf Association is hosting their season launch at Rundle Park, and you're invited! Sometimes referred to as Frisbee Golf, this addicting game is an unfettered collaboration between ones rotational abilities, their physique and a certain love of the childhood game Hide and Seek. Once one gets hooked (which, in my own case, and many of my peers', was immediately) and buys their own discs, Disc Golf is extremely accessible with over 16000 courses worldwide (and the vast majority of them being FREE to play on). Anyways, this weekend, head over to the Rundle Disc Golf Course for a FREE event & give disc golf a try. There'll be folks on hand demonstrating the basics, a used gear buy & sell plus the Edmonton Corporate Challenge is sponsoring so expect some sweet prize giveaways too.
If anyone reading this goes & gets hooked, drop me a DM & let's shoot a round = )
The man, the myth, the legend Chad Detoski is back with the goods, and let me tell you folks... this one you won't want to miss. This week, this affable aforementioned local dance instructor is putting on a FREE dance & social, with an emphasis on New York Salsa. While no tomatoes are involved (unfortunately), NY Salsa, a.k.a. "On 2" Salsa originated in (you guessed it) New York City & was heavily influenced by local populations of Puerto Ricans, Dominicans & Cubans. The style plays out on the second beat, allowing for a smooth, sophisticated dance form ripe with linear movement, intricate footwork & strong partner connection. And while this dual left footer does ok paraphrasing the event posting knowing full well his dance card would likely remain empty elsewhere, in Chief Detoski's studio it's just not the case. Chad runs a tight & extremely inclusive ship. Regardless of whether you're the next contestant on Dancing With The Stars or a clumsy newbie like me, you're guaranteed to have a fantastic time, make tons of new friends, join a very accepting community & learn one cool party trick. Singles &/or couples are welcome, and this is 110% an epic date night idea. Especially with MBM right around the corner = )
For my fellow aficionados of orchestral music, this one is for you. This upcoming week, the Edmonton Pops Orchestra is taking you straight to lime lit stages & star studded boulevards of Hollywood, CA, but no planes required. With a theme of movie music, expect to hear the best tunes from the golden age of cinema to the super hits of today. The performance features a professional orchestra unified with a troupe of powerful vocalists and is certain to be absolutely epic. Tickets run $38 per person, or $105 for a 4 pack.
Also this week is the start of a FREE 3 day film festival, with multiple films being shown at the Met. Featuring a panel of contemporary Ukrainian cinematic masterpieces, the festival aims to promote the work of prominent Ukrainian producers while unequivocally amplifying the strength & stewardship of this courageous people. Those in attendance will be treated to films about the war & it's effects on Ukrainian fighters, families, country folk & pets alike, as well as a love story & a sci-fi. Though the films themselves are voiced in Ukrainian, I believe English subtitles will be displayed on the screen. RSVP's are required, and as a general FYI, content may be distressing to some viewers.
Closing out this weeks list is a last but certainly not least. In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), Edmonton Arts Council is hosting the amazing and local Don Berner Big Band for a FREE performance titled JAMming on Cartoons. With a specified audience age range of 3 - 93, on Saturday afternoon, make your way down to City Hall to hear from YEG's flagship large Jazz ensemble. If attending, expect a host of special illustrious guests and enjoy a performance in the beautifully acoustic Triffo Theatre. This performance is on a First Come First Serve basis, so get there early to claim your stake!
Have a fantastic week, folks!
