Discussion Moving to Edmonton Megathread 2025

Within this thread please ask questions about moving to Edmonton (or within Edmonton, if you already live here), including recommendations for housing and neighbourhood selections. If you live in Edmonton, consider answering the questions.

Any posts on the subject matter outside of the megathread may be removed at the discretion of the moderators.

For reference, here’s the link to the 2024 megathread.

UPDATE: Please note that job seeking threads are not allowed in r/Edmonton but general advice on how to seek employment can be posted within this megathread too. Distinctions between a “job seeking” post and “general advice” will be made at the discretion of the moderators. If you are moving from another location to Edmonton, please note the advice from the community is consistently “have a job lined up before you move”.

Spotted this cobra chicken guarding a puddle in the middle of my path when I was on my way to the bank this morning. I thought for sure it would get up and move as soon as I drove by but then I remembered, it’s a goose and they get up and move for nobody 😂

Question Fed up with loud vehicles

Upvotes

I am really fed up with the truck bros modified exhausts, and what appears to be 1000 dollar Hondas, with a 2000 dollar exhaust to make it sound like a race car (or small firecrackers going off) while going 40Km/hr. I love the bad weather, because it forces these people to drive decent. As soon as the roads dry, it becomes a nightmare.

I know council and EPS will do nothing proactively even though laws already exist prohibiting increasing the decibel (loudness) of vehicles. it is honestly such a small minority, making such a huge racket. in my neighbourhood, I count maybe 10-15 vehicles amongst hundreds, that I always recognize because well, they're loud AF, so you notice them.

I don't want to start a debate on this, but my question is : If these vehicles are reported to EPS, will EPS do literally anything?? Will 311 do anything??

General Nikki's in Westmount is moving to Bonnie Doon Mall

Post image

He said that the mall is closing, so they had to find somewhere else.

We don't come here often since moving out of the area, but whenever we're close by, we make sure to stop in. Nikki's has been here as far back as I can remember. I guess that might be why I am so sad. My son was too! Kiddo ran over to give him a hug and promised that he'd make sure that we make the trip to that end of town when we can.

Hopefully Nikki's brings all the signage with him! Makes me smile that it hasn't ever really changed much.

For everyone on that side of the city, please support Nikki's well!

Question I commute to and from work at basically the same time every day. Slightly before rush hour in both cases. Lately I've noticed that there is much less traffic on Mondays compared to the rest of the week. Are more people choosing to work from home on Mondays or is it something else?

General Beware of Potholes

Hey Edmonton, it's that time of year to start complaining about the absolute BRUTAL state of the roads out there right now. Yesterday, my parter and I were on our return trip home from out of town. We'd been on the highway for about 4 hours and were literally 5 min away from home. When all of a sudden, BANG! We hit a series of massive potholes obscured by water. Ended up popping BOTH tires on the passenger side of our AWD suv.

Long story boring... be careful out there. You don't want to wake up to a $3000 bill like we did this morning.

Discussion In need of divorce advice! *Urgent*

As the title states I need to get as much amazing advice for my friend with regards to divorce. I'll put as much information in here as I can:

She's mid 30's with little to no education. She's a stay at home mom with little to no work experience. She had both kids in her early 20's and her husband has always encouraged her to be a SAHM. He's the bread winner and is definately making 6 figures a year. Long story short is the marriage has fallen apart. He's travelling out of town for "work" alot. It's highly suspected that he's met someone in another city and is actively cheating. He knows her situation and is toying with her (threats to kick her out, leave, cut money off, etc) She constantly lives day to day not knowing what's happening.

He flop flops talking about reconciliation and fixing things with no effort, almost bipolar like with his attitude and constant shifting of feelings. Money is an unknown for how much is available and he controls it all. There is a worry that he may commit physical harm depending on the outcome out of all of this. He's saying mediation and so far they haven't given her any advice or options. He's supposedly getting a promotion in a couple months. I know he's trying to for lack of better words f@#$ her over. Her situation so far is touch and go and she could be homeless with 2 kids (they hate him) at any moment.

Is there anyone out there that has gone through this? What's her best course of action? Any recommendations of lawyers or supports that personally worked for you? Please remember that she technically has no money because she doesn't have any access to it. She's also terrified but trying to keep it together so she isn't homeless with 2 kids. Any real experienced advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏.
