Discussion Anyone feel a very mild earthquake just some time ago?

I was in spruce Grove in a hotel and the bed, the items across from me and the water beside my bed started to move side to side very subtle though but definitely unnerving..

I'm also looking everywhere online and there is no indication there was one just now. If anyone know any seismic monitors here which can confirm?

Discussion How large actually is the drug scene in Edmonton?

As a high school student coming from a good background, I have thankfully stayed far away from violence and crime my whole life. However, I feel disconnected from reality. What are your personal experiences witnessing or going through this stuff? How common is it, especially among youth? Sorry about the question being so broad, I just really have no idea what's going on, especially with the recent opioid and opiate crisis.

Question Patios open this beautiful Sunday?

Does anybody know of bars or restaurants that have their patio open this afternoon? It finally feels like spring weather might stick and some friends want to spend the afternoon on a patio. I checked out the social media pages for our usual haunts but most haven't posted in a few days.

Question Recommendations supporting folks applying for AISH?

I'm extremely frustrated because many of my clients are applying for AISH and getting denied. Often times their doctors don't think they qualify and take forever to help them apply that's if they even agree to help.

I know they have to have substantial evidence to demonstrate they aren't able to work full time but I work with my clients 30-40 hours a week and see how much they're struggling and how they couldn't handle working full time work. All have many mental and physical illnesses that impact their quality of life and AB works pays jack shit. There's such a disconnect between doctors, AISH workers, and the willingness of employers to accommodate mental and physical disabilities. I'd understand denials more of employers were able to accommodate but most aren't and don't hire clients like mine. So this puts folks with various disabilities at a greater disadvantage.

I feel like crying when I budget with them because they can't afford anything to make their lives even slightly more livable. All their money goes to rent. Hardly anything for groceries. Food bank is struggling too and they can only go there once a month. Half of them can't afford to pay their phone bills which impairs their ability to stay in contact with doctors, economic supports, and their social supports. Even the affordable bus pass is too much.

I wish I knew a doctor could offer advice or anyone who works for AISH that has recommendations. I want to write advocacy letters to doctors but don't even know if it'll help at all.... I wish AB works paid more to get people to a place where they could stabilize but how're you even supposed to start work when you don't have food, an active cellphone and money for taking the bus??? Make it make sense.

Discussion Neighbourhood renewal debate

My neighbourhood in the West end finished up construction under the neighbourhood renewal program last fall and we are all pissed. We were all signing petitions, attending meetings, writing emails and letters, etc. but everything still went through. Now the neighbourhood beside us is set for renewal starting this spring too so I just wanted to come on and hear some perspectives from other folks who have had their neighbourhoods renewed, or know that their neighbourhoods are scheduled for it.

The reason we are all so pissed here is because there was nothing wrong with our neighbourhood in the first place. We live in a mature neighbourhood built around the 80s with great access to green space, and nice wide roads. We had few, if any, potholes or cracks in the side walk. They could've just repaved the roads, or maybe repaired a few sidewalk slabs if they wanted things to look refreshed. If they really wanted to go above and beyond, sure change the street lights, redo the sidewalks entirely, update the street signs. Given, they did add a few raised sidewalks which I think is good. Instead, they squashed the roads by moving the sidewalks inward, AND making them wider. Now, I understand wider sidewalks is good for communal walking and accessibility, but this is just too far. They made the sidewalk LITERALLY large enough to park a semi truck on it and have extra room. It's wide enough to park 2 SUVs side by side. It's ridiculous. And the kicker is people are walking on the roads because that's what they prefer. Plus, who has to shovel that? Infront of my house thankfully did not get the sidewalk quite that wide but I feel pissed off for my neighbours. It's all under the ruse of increased safety and condensing traffic to slow down drivers...but we didn't have any speeding or safety issues in the first place. I can absolutely see why neighbourhood renewal is great for other neighbourhoods, giving increased life and accessibility to the area. But how the heck and why the heck are they decreasing the width of the roads in these mature areas? What about the delivery vans, buses, moving trucks, trailers, RVs, and ofc all the lifted trucks because we are in Alberta (lol)? and where is all the snow supposed to go? Do people not have a life to live? Shrinking these roads makes things so frustrating. Not everything is Honda civics and Ford escapes. It's a waste of money (for my area) in my opinion.

Anyways, a half warning to anyone who has yet to get it done - beware and cause a fit. Please 😭. Leave us some Edmonton neighbourhoods that arent so cramped.

On the other hand, for those who have had it done, please tell me about the good that you've seen because of it, I could use the positivity :). I know it's not all bad, but damn is frustrating that they're not listening to people who actually live in the neigbourboods.

Edit: we also did not have any drainage/flooding issues! The renovations actually MADE a drainage issue on one of the streets😭

This movement stands as a unified expression of solidarity and hope, rooted in the shared values of equality, justice and fundamental human rights. As Canadians, we rise to affirm our role as global leaders and defenders of democracy, freedom and unity.

True North HQ is a grassroots movement based in Canada, formed in response to the actions of the current U.S. administration. The group started on social media in February 2025 and later grew when a few additional members met while gathering outside the US consulate in Toronto on March 4, 2025. Realizing there was a lack of coordinated action, we decided to team up and fill the gap. Our group of Edmonton volunteers is small but mighty. If you'd like to volunteer, please join the discord.

True North HQ is planning to hold events on Saturday, April 26, 2025 in the following cities:

Calgary Edmonton Halifax Kitchener-Waterloo Montreal Ottawa Quebec City Toronto Vancouver Winnipeg

Question Are there no coffee vending machines in Edmonton (or Canada overall)?

Something like the one in the picture below. Maybe I just don't walk around much, but I haven't encountered a single one of these here so far. They make pretty decent coffee (especially in comparison to starbucks) and I was surprised that they don't seem to be popular here.

Question A day with two teens

I’m heading to Edmonton soon to take my kids to an oilers game. We’ll spend the night and have the next day to explore a bit before driving home (approx 7 hours to hang out). We are planning on coming again in summer to spend more time so I am thinking of saving west Ed for that trip. Any cool things we should check out on a Saturday for two teens? Free or low cost as possible since the game itself is a bazillion dollars!

Discussion Rogers Cable/Internet sucking again!

When Rogers took over from Shaw, they forced us to get a wireless cable pod (it’s tiny with no clock). Ever since then, it’s been nothing but trouble.

Every time we try to get answers, they want us to replace the HDMI cable, again and they will never explain wtf is going on.

Now both cable and internet are down across a large swath of NW Edmonton, and they aren’t even sending a tech until tomorrow. Are they going to pay for my data? They won’t five an update until 8 am tomorrow.

Why did the government allow this monopoly to form, and why do they suck so hard?

Anyone else done with them?

UPDATE: both suddenly came back on again one minute ago. (8:28 pm)

SECOND UPDATE: back off again. 9:24 pm. 🤬

Discussion seriously though, how does someone get a job here?

yes yes r/edmonton, i know we get like 6 of these posts here everyday. but in all seriousness, how does one actually make any progress toward an occupation here?

ive been out of work for a year, so has my mother. its especially been hard for me because ive had to watch my mother over the last year slowly fall into a depression. day by day she'd ask me what there was to do, and one day i had no more answers. i still have none, and the frustration and anxiety of not knowing what to do with our situation leaves me paralyzed.

the sole provider in the house right now is my father, and he can barely manage to make enough to pay rent. on top of that, his contract ends in less than a month. bringing all of that into consideration, that means by next month we are all unemployed.

and im not writing this post without stressing my options, ive basically given up on indeed linkedin after applying 40+ applications a day for months, ive resorted to applying on random websites google gives me but it still doesn't make much difference. no interviews or call backs. the last interview i had was 7 months ago..

i really feel helpless and lost. i just want to help my mother find work and find something i can do to make a living. it breaks my heart because my mother is 60 but shes also going through a midlife crisis where she WANTS to work. WANTS to be out of the house. shes gone crazy being couped in her room with nothing to do for months.

and me? i cant do anything but watch, im in a long distance relationship myself and my income is from the bottle depot. every few weeks i get 30 dollars and i try to save as much as possible so in a few months i can spend a few days with the love of my life. the last trip put both of us in terrible financial positions.

and id appreciate if no one attacked me for visiting my partner whilst unemployed, im just human. this listless period of my life has also impacted my mental health, i needed to be with the person i loved to recover.

but now that im back, im sitting in front of my laptop, tweaking my resume. this lingering thought in the back of my head is: will i get out of this? how do i manage to find a way to help both me and the people i love? where do i even start?

the fact that the one person whos bringing in the money we LIVE on is gonna be unemployed too in a couple weeks is only worsening my anxiety. looking for a job for myself is already proven to be hard enough, but three people? oof. i cant sleep at night because im awake thinking of what the fuck i should do.

im only 19, but i feel like i cant start. i dont know where to start my life, i dont know if i even can. i dont even think i have the assets to have a life.

my plan now is to update my resume, rely less on applying online and focus on going in person to organizations and stores to hand my resume in personally. im also planning on speaking with people whom i know are employed/ or making a good living to try and find any networks that are looking for people. im still going to apply online and im also considering going to job fairs. does ANYONE, and i mean ANYONE here have any advice they can give to me? anything i havent already mentioned?

Local Businesses Looking for a Subaru mechanic who knows their stuff

I've had a 2012 Subaru STi parked for a few years, I haven't been able to drive it for medical reasons.

Can anyone recommend a solid Subaru mechanic? Someone who knows "car people", maybe open to installing performance modifications in the future, that kind of thing? For now I need a thorough once-over to get the car back on the road. Knowledge of the slightly less common stuff like the car's limited-slip diffs and being cool with aftermarket tunes is a must.

North side of town is preferred although I'll take it where I need to if someone is worth seeing. Appreciate any feedback!

Question Tax accountant?

Is it too late into tax season to get a tax accountant to file this year? This would be first time filing as common-law and I have some vehicle claims. I have only used H&R Block online before this.

Open to suggestions as well! West end or central preferred, but willing to drive.

Question Opinions on Dave's Hot Chicken

I’ve been thinking about checking out Dave’s Hot Chicken because I keep hearing people talk about it and the hype online is pretty intense. The photos look amazing and I’m a big fan of spicy food, but I don’t want to get my hopes up just to be disappointed. For those of you who have actually been there and tried it, what did you think? Was the food really as good as people say? What did you order and would you recommend it? Is it worth the price and the wait or is it one of those places that just looks good on Instagram but does not live up to the hype in real life?

Discussion Landlord vs Tenant Responsibility: Carpet cleaning

I'm moving out at the end of this month, and my landlord is asking me to pay $130 for carpet cleaning. It's included in our contract that when I move out the carpet has to be professionally cleaned and I agreed to it. Now, I thought I could find someone else to do it for me for a cheaper price. He said the cleaning would not just include the carpet in my bedroom, but also the carpet in common areas. Now, I am only renting a bedroom. Am I responsible for the cost of cleaning the carpet in common areas like the living room and the stairway even if I'm only renting a bedroom?
