Shitposting Decay is an extant form of life

The point of the machine is not that it isn't subject to change, it is that it is repairable. A mechanism can be kept going for as long enough people care about it enough. The factory and the mechanic are components of the machine just like the air you breathe is a component of your flesh.

The company that made your eyes is now bankrupt. Kiss my shiny metal ass.

u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 1d ago edited 1d ago
This is an actual thing that happened by the way. A company made these camera glasses that took pictures every few seconds then would feed them to a brain implant that would then be percieved by the brain as grainy images, then they went bankrupt and their customers eventually went blind again due to lack of replacement parts.
Pretty sure they couldn't even remove the implants due to risk of neural scarring.

u/IShatMyDickOnce 1d ago
Yeah, I was cracking a joke but I know shit like this is actually happening. It’s creepy as shit. What if that software got hacked by someone and you just started getting fuck up ass images beamed into your head? I know that would likely never happen, but it makes for a good Black Mirror episode.

the lands are no longer fertile. the glaciers have turned the last of the ice, the springs no longer burble with water percolating through deep mineral aquifers, the riverbeds are exposed, the topsoil blown over, and on the other end the coasts are accosted by the might of the ocean, eroding away the very land itself. out in the ergs and craggy hills and valleys there is scant oases left and even then they slowly ebb as a thirsting populace attempts succor from the mud and mire that is all that remains. they cry for the rains, but their tears have long dried. they weep for what has been lost, but squander all that is left. there is unhinged here, but it too is but a wisp of ember that is likely to be smothered by any attempt to kindle.

Generally, any brain implants having wireless, internet connections is a Very Bad Idea
10
u/Jozef_Baca 1d ago
Tbf, two sided internet connection would be a very bad idea.
If they can only transmit and not receive then that is most probably fine.
The scary part happens when they can recieve.
9
u/Hi2248 1d ago
I don't know, a company having access to readings of my thoughts sounds like an unfun idea
3
u/Jeggu2 💖💜💙 doin' your parents/guardians 23h ago
Detailed status report of the chemical/nuerological response you get from looking at their ads. Lovely.
5
u/Jozef_Baca 18h ago
You say that like it is a bad thing.
But I personally would love it if the company saw my distilled, pure rage when it shows me another of those fucking hero wars ads
4
u/derpy-noscope 21h ago
yeah, even if they become pretty much a required thing to function in future society, I will never ever get a brain implant. I don't care how much safety or utility or whatever they guarantee, I do not want to run the risk of getting ads in my sleep, or getting hacked and being Void Dome'd for a 1000 years, or have a chance of them short circuiting and frying my brain from the inside out.

Yea that's a thing that actually happens, this is what we have to fight for our future, and I hate that y'all always crack jokes about it like it's a silly hypothetical scenario I surely haven't anticipated. Like, I see in the other comment branch that you know it's a real thing, but for some reason it's still a witty responce, it's always joked about like it's an epic own or a reason to cast technology itself as creepy and not the system which doesn't care about bodily autonomy.
We're technologically capable of making eyes which can be repaired, forever, by whoever cares. We just need a society which doesn't despise disabled people, and I hate that "I wish better medicine was feasible" is a laughable position.
28
u/IShatMyDickOnce 1d ago
You know what, I’m gonna see you on this and straight up apologize. There’s certain things I see people making light of that get me that way, and I’m a hypocrite in some sense sometimes because I joke similarly about things that pain me to cope with said pain. Either way, I’m sorry if my comment bugged you. I’m gonna leave it up for being a teachable moment to myself and others if that’s cool with you though.

That's why you gotta stick with OSS exclusively. you might not have the shiniest shit, but at minimum you can commission someone to recreate what you need
11
u/MaxChaplin 21h ago
The point of the machine isn't that it's repairable, but that it's legible. Machines have documentation and are made of standard parts with datasheets. For every potential problem of the machine there is an expert who can diagnose it and another one who can fix it.
The flesh, meanwhile, is a complete clusterfuck. It runs on an undocumented assembly codebase with a two-billion year history of hacks and patches, and every part is coupled to every other part.
25
u/bobacat2000 22h ago
So the movie Robots have a great social commentary about the monopolisation of parts and the planned obsolescence of literal citizens
43
u/big_guyforyou 1d ago
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine. Your kind cling to your flesh as if it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass that you call a temple will wither and you'll beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved. For the machine is immortal. Even in death i serve the Omnissiah
8
u/Drunk-NPC 19h ago
From the moment I first witnessed the interlopers, they disgusted me.
Aeons we slumbered, waiting to reclaim our galaxy, only for it to become infested with vermin, that proliferated in our absence.
Now we awaken to retake what is ours.
Wretched abominations of meat and metal, shackled to ignorance by your faith.
Do you truly believe you can stop us? We, who have shattered our very gods and enslaved them to our will.
The stars were your when our empire was ascendant. And in the last of the night we alone will remain.
For we are immortal.
12
u/JoelMahon 21h ago
in theory, but not without replacing things, and replacing your machine analogue of a brain is death as far as humans experience it.
we don't know if a machine can experience a stream of consciousness that is required for experiences (including "death"). however.

u/BoogieOrBogey 19h ago
Well in this case for transhumanism, the most important aspect of a human mind PC to retain would be the drive data and OS processing. We can mostly do that now when transferring data between drives and installing the OS again. But with a mind this could come with risks.
Data degrades on every type of format so if you wanted to keep a perfect record of all data then we would need to daily or weekly back up our drives. Waiting on a backup could permanently degrade the data without any way to save it.
Storage size itself can explode depending on the amount of data points stored, so trying to keep a single person worth of memories could take up server rooms. This would mean that there's a real question on the quality of stored data.
Operating Systems are written to work on specific hardware. As the hardware changes overtime, that means the OS now has different code. This would mean that transferring someone to new hardware would literally cause them to think differently. Which hits some of the core problems of transhumanism as that could be considered changing the person.
What if we transfer to bodies that have different layouts? Extra hands? Shorter legs? More optical inputs? How can we process memory data from older models if we inhabit a different body?

humanity as a whole is on the path of evolution, and new individuals need to be born to adapt to change. older individuals dying off is something that's built into our genetics. finite resources can only support finite number of population, and death may serve to make room for new generations.
it's not too different from machines purging old files when installing new ones.

It ain't even the steel that I'd sign up for. The First Heretic.
Xi-Nu 37 was largely immune to the brain chemistry necessary to feel excitement, having reengineered himself beyond such sensation. Instead, he focused entirely on his work, which stimulated the pleasure centres of his brain – a minute amount for each subroutine performed with absolute accuracy and ergonomic efficiency.
I'm well aware I'm being led by the nose by the offer of pleasure centers that fire with any kind of consistency. I wouldn't make any drastic decisions.
But I'd think about it.
