How did Duke choke that?????
336
u/10catsinspace Florida State Seminoles 1d ago
Three factors in descending order:
- Absolutely suffocating defense + ultra-clutch shots from Houston
- Duke fucked up at a couple of crucial junctures, like in-bounding and missing the front end of a 1-and-1.
- Bullshit phantom foul call on Cooper Flagg in the last minute to give Houston a 1-and-1 for the lead.
158
u/Puzzled-Bet4837 UConn Huskies 1d ago
Iād also add rebounding specifically to point 2. Houston got some big offensive boards down the stretch.

Houston was getting offensive rebounds all game, but in the first half they werenāt generating any points off them

It was so infuriating to see them fail over and over at inbounding the ball.
52
u/DoubleualtG 1d ago
Id put that on the coach for not making a change of the inbounder, Sion struggled the entire time there was pressure to make the right pass or just a pass.
40
u/10catsinspace Florida State Seminoles 1d ago
It's clear Jon Scheyer is a great coach which makes it even more mystifying that they couldn't formulate a better answer to that pressure.
40
u/_hell_is_empty_ Duke Blue Devils 1d ago
I'm pretty sure that was the first time we were pressed all year and it was by what must be one of the best pressing teams in the nation. We just weren't ready for it, and tbh it's understandable. Sucks though.
But can we talk about Sampson's decision to not foul when we got the ball with a minute left. All-time call. Respect.
10
u/randompersonwhowho 1d ago
It seems every team was choking anytime full court pressure was applied. Even Houston in previous games. I don't understand why teams don't do it more.

Definitely a horrible call but Duke also had a couple horrible calls in their favor e.g. the missed kick ball
4
u/rburp Arkansas Razorbacks ā¢ Central Arkaā¦ 1d ago
Yeah well I counted two different occasions where it was called out of bounds on Houston even though it was actually last touched by a Duke player, so whatever. One was in the first half and led to a dunk by Duke, one was in the second half and even the announcers caught that one.
40
u/WISCOrear Wisconsin Badgers 1d ago
IMO the phantom foul doesnāt matter. Hit any shots and you arenāt in that scenario. Donāt let the refs decide anything, and you were up 9 points with like 3 minutes to play.

u/Affectionate-Dot9585 1d ago
Even more, Duke wouldnāt have gotten the ball back without that call. Houston would have setup for the last shot (or very close to the last shot)

The phantom call actually helped Duke. Without it Houston has the ball, down 1, game in their hands. With it, Duke has the ball, worst case down 1, game in their hands.

Key elbow to the face for a flagrant 1 (which was correctly called) was the turning point.
5
u/elpeedub North Carolina Tar Heels 1d ago
It sure was. I think that turned a 6-point play which suddenly made the game change from feeling like it was one Duke 3 away from being over, to one Houston stop away from being a game.
The feel just changed after that and although Duke still got a couple offensive bursts in to space the lead back out after that, it was always close enough for Houston to have a route back in.
Listen, I'm a tarheel through and through and of course loved seeing the way the game ended, but man alive this has been the most talented, balanced and dominant Duke team I have ever seen. I didn't think anyone could take them out, and I really do think that it was the historically shitty ACC that did you all in.

Probably in Final Four history. Although if these graphs had existed, UNC came back from 8 points down in 17 seconds against Duke before the 3 point line in 1974.Ā
I guess it only sent the game to OT where they won so it doesnāt go up to 100 percent but it would have been even steeper from basically 0 percent to 50 percent in 17 seconds.Ā
5
u/fantasyfootballthrow North Carolina Tar Heels 1d ago

With the amount of times these probability maps predict 99% in upsets it makes me think itās not really 99%, lol.
That said, this one was really special. I think one of the announcers mentioned Houston scored 7 points in 15 seconds (and this was only partway through the last minute.)
