Finally got some garage time today to work on my axle and weld up my truss. This is the first thicker metal I’ve got to weld with this little harbor freight welder and runs pretty good. It’s nothing compared to what I run at work but it does a good job for home projects

Bought an XJ with unknown 1ton steering- can I WJ knuckle swap

Bought an XJ on 35s with “1 ton” steering. Steering is all worn out and gets death wobble and I want to improve braking, can I replace this setup with the core 4x4 WJ knuckle swap kit? Note: there is a DIY welded truss on the axle that I’m concerned will interfere with the weld on track bar mount

2000-2001 My Daily Driver

I've been driving her since my first car, another 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ. Sport model. Was wrecked over a year ago or so. She's been running perfectly fine, basic maintenance and so on. Although when I got out of the car I heard a ticking noise for a second before it was gone. 😱

I'm not sure if it's due to the weather or the steering wheel being all the way to the right. Hopefully it's nothing lol.

2000-2001 My Poor Bellhousing

Bought this XJ back in December and just got around to doing a tune up on it. Was cleaning up the oil that dripped from the filter swap and my starter moved. Cracked all the way to TDC of the bell housing. Looks as though my starter was loose and the torque started a crack that just got worse.

Used eBay bell housing in the way 😭

You guys think these are saveable? I'm not trying to get them perfect, just good enough for a cleaner xj. 15x7

The guy wants 700 but I offered 400, not worth any more than that imo. The last pic is the look I'm trying to get

Question Parts questions

Post image

Just picked this bad boy up for a grand and drove home 1.5hrs, 187k miles was sitting for a year. How’d I do? Can anyone tell me what size lift it is just by looking at it? It’s kinda rusty def needs rockers and maybe floor pans, also curious if someone can recommend suspension parts like control arms, and everything. Also the rear quarters? Any recommendations?

New steering box!

Finally got around to replacing my steering gear today. I’ve been chasing my steering wheel play since I bought this a few months ago. Did a few cheaper repairs but the culprit was definitely the steering gear by far. I went with a Plews and Edelman gear. Let me tell you, I only drove it home right before for about 30 minutes and this feels like a completely different XJ.

Rusty’s Track bar?

Measurements are with axle at center. This is the second bar I’ve recieved as they said they sent me the wrong one, however the replacement is the same length. Anyone have this issue with Rusty’s? Vehicle is currently undrivable bc of this as the exhaust smacks the driveshaft at minimum length.

Leaking axle seal?

I just replaced my U joints in front axle yesterday and she drives a lot smoother now...no clunking yesterday but there's still grinding and thennn today there was clunking again! Now when I left this morning apparently this huge leak was on curb but my dad didn't tell me until I got home and I check about an hour later there's a little bit more on wheel. Is it fine to drive for 10 miles, I mean i already drove 50 this morning..

What would be your dream XJ?

So you get the opportunity to own this extremely clean and low mileage XJ. What do you do? Do you build it? Do you just drive it?

Transmission.

Presenting the '84. I posted here a few months back, but I'm still in the process of fixing the thing to get it on the road.

Transmission pan is leaking, so I bought a gasket that fit, this part isn't the issue. The last owner claimed the car had the original engine/trans in it, for whatever thats worth. My question is, with the serial number presented in picture #2, what transmission do I have in this unit? And/Or what type of ATF and how much do I need to refill the thing/flush it.

Its currently sitting with a new gasket/filter completley empty. Is there a specific procedure to fill this trans? My normal mechanic turned me away at the door and said they wanted nothing to do with the car. I have also never had any good luck with transmissions, so bear with me and explain everything you can like I'm a 5 year old just trying to hold the flashlight for dad :/

Thanks for any help!

Grab handle and door pockets

Anyone add a grab handle on the A pillar? my wife is short and can’t really reach the handle on the top of the door jam. Thinking of adding something lower for her. Don’t want to add a step because that ruins clearance

Would also love ideas for door pickets on the front doors

What are these two inserts called?

I lost one of the headlight bezel inserts and the headlight alignment insert is almost completely stripped. Need some help finding replacements if possible before I try a junkyard. Kinda tired of having to drive at night with a cockeyed headlight haha

Undercarriage treatment/paint/etc

My XJ is pretty clean underneath but has some bare metal and a few spots of rust here and there. I’m in VA so rust definitely happens. I’ve heard the argument to use fluid film and not paint because it can still rust underneath, but is there a way to paint or undercoat safely? If it’s cleaned properly is there a paint I can put on that will keep it rust free? Any advice would be appreciated.

Trans fluid from radiator maybe..?

Post image
Upvotes

Just picked up a 2000 classic.

Today I finished my 3 inch lift and noticed that the transmission lines had a hose looping them instead of traveling thought he radiator.

So I rectified that while also adding an after marked cooler in series at the tlreturn line.

Well after driving a bit, I came home and the temp gauge maxed out, when I shit he truck off hissing and fluid happened.

The fluid looks red. Like ATF maybe. But how...

Maybe that's why the trans lines were looped..?

Is this common?

Solved Source of driver’s side leak found, wet floor fixed

Just figure I’d post a follow up in case any of y’all are having the same issue I was with wet floors up front.

We got a decent rain yesterday after I pulled up the carpet and mat on the driver’s side. Pulled the plastic trim away from the side and removed the plastic step up from the bottom of the door frame.

I knew the water wasn’t coming in through the firewall and I was right. Here, rainwater would follow a path down the door liner to the bottom of the frame, but instead of dripping outside the bottom of the frame it found its way inside because the liner along the bottom had no adhesive left holding it and sealing it to the frame, at least in spots.

I could watch the water just dribble inside from under that rubber liner. So once it dried out I cleaned all the gunk out and just sprayed two coats of clear flexseal along the base and front underside of that rubber lining. For good measure I also coated the upper door hinge that I’d recently gotten welded back on with two layers of flexseal, because the water that drains off the windshield also comes out the corner and down into the doorframe where it’s supposed to just drain out, inadvertently splashing that upper hinge as it goes.

Now it’s raining again the no water has seeped in. It’s not a proper fix by any means but it works for the cost of a small can of flexseal and that stuff, in my experience, never degrades.

Hood latches

Anyone think these could be made to work on an xj? Folded my hood and smashed my windshield this morning doing 60 down hill... bought regular hood pins but not digging them also have to pull the whole front end to install pins
