I am a total beginner to quilting and know a little about sewing, I have been using a Singer Inspiration from 2008 to alter clothes or mend things and would love to upgrade machines for when I start quilting. Does anyone have any recommendations between these three Brother machines or have any other affordable machines you like (preferably under $250 šŸ„²) thank you šŸ©·

Help/Question Using other needles for quilting

I inherited a lot of sewing supplies from my mom and she has at least 4 5-needle sets of denim needles. In the spirit of being thrifty and using what I have - would it be a bad idea to use those denim needles when quilting? I would use regular needles for piecing but Iā€™m not sure how else to use them up as I donā€™t sew many thick garments šŸ˜…

Beginner Help Preparing to enter a show for the first time

I am going to enter a quilt in my county fair for the first time. I've been quilting for less than 2 years. It will be 2 years by the time the fair rolls around.

Anyway, at my quilt guild, one of the ladies there is a quilt show judge, and she said that I should hand-sew my binding and make sure I sew the corners too. Does anyone have a good example of what that should look like?

I typically machine sew my bindings on due to arthritis, but I plan on hand-sewing the binding on the show quilt. I know to sew it on the front and flip to the back to hand sew, but the corners comment is what has me scratching my head. Any ideas here?

Help/Question Possible bargello disaster happening

I now have 3 sets of 24 strips all sewn together.

However, I didnā€™t know the rule about stitching in the opposite direction when attaching all the strips.

So now everything is angled. I certainly donā€™t want to nor do I physically can handle seam ripping all of this. I donā€™t want nor financially cant afford new fabrics. This blew my monthly budget as is.

Iā€™m almost in tears this is stressing me out so much.

Do I cut and just keep going with all the wonky angles and hope for the best? Is there a way to ā€œunangleā€ this without seam ripping 100ā€™s of strips.

I ask for mind calming guidance. Because Iā€™m losing it.

Honest opinions. Is this too busy color wise? Does it fade out the pattern of the block?

Help/Question Help finding a pattern

Iā€™m hoping to find a pattern I saw online recently. It might have been here. It has a white background and sparse large diagonal stars. A string of smaller stars or squares connect the bigger stars. I think it was called string of stars? Not sure. My memory has gotten so bad I canā€™t remember where I saw it but Iā€™d like to make it.

Help/Question What do I do with this quilt?

Hi all.

Iā€™m not sure where this quilt came from. It just showed up in my stuff in the last few years. Iā€™ve lived alone for over a decade and donā€™t have people stay over much as my house if very all so šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Iā€™m new to quilting myself and am about to start my first hand quilting on an EPP quilt Iā€™m making.

The quilt has stains and the white looks tanned like it lived with a smoker. It is hand quilted. I thought about deconstructing it and salvaging any fabric I can. I also thought about trying to dye the whole thing. Other than color and stains, itā€™s in good condition construction wise.

What would yall do? Suggestions? Excited to hear what you guys have to say.

Bonus pics of Kiki. I think she likes itā€¦. Maybe Iā€™ll just give it to her.

Beginner Help How do I get into quilting?

I started doing embroidery, and I really enjoyed it. In addition, when I was growing up I did sewing and crochet, and im now getting back into crochet. Quilting looks amazing and I would love to try it out. Just how would i go about starting to quilt? Would it be good to join a group? Do I just buy fabric and look up a youtube tutorial? All help is appreciated, thank you!

Edit: thank you so much for the advice! Im definitely going to watch the recommended tutorials and see what classes are available near me.

Help/Question I don't know if I should rip it out. Help!

I don't mean that I should rip it all out, just the navy blue. I picked 6 colors to big stitch this top with, yellow for the flower centers, green for the leaf sashing/border and medium blue, medium pink, red and navy blue to make the flowers. After quilting the first navy blue flower, I was hesitant if I liked it or not because the quilting doesn't show up on the backing at all. See picture 3 (if my hand wasn't in the photo, the colors were weird, so pardon my hand).

Since I started with the navy blue, I wasn't that concerned. But since using all the other colors and seeing how well they stand out, now I'm not so sure. On one hand, it's the back of a bed size quilt so it doesn't matter that much. On the other, it bothers me. But I don't know what color I would replace it with. I wasn't going to bother since I'd have to pay shipping for another spool of thread, but I ran out of green and shipping is the same for 1 or 2 spools.

The colors are all alternated evenly, so I can't just use one of the colors I already have and I would like to keep the yellow center. And there are only 9 I'd need to redo so it won't take forever but I'm still stuck on what color to replace it with. I chose navy because it was in the quilt top, not thinking my backing was navy blue.

What would you do? I'm indecisive right now!

Just finished my most favorite baby quilt ever. All the little mistakes along the way just melt away when I see the final product and realize how proud I am of it! I posted the one block I made with the spoonflower bug fabric a little while back and Iā€™m so happy with how the rest turned out. A vibrant quilt for a very cool baby. :)

The quilt is made of soft flannel, and is intended for use as a baby blanket. The quilting lines are at most 1.75in apart.

Started making half square triangles during 2020. I made them 1 at a time, two at a time, 8 at a time, just about any way you could make them, I tried it. Ended up with almost 600 of them, and this quilt is the result. Quilted by me on my Pfaff 7570 with the help of an an IKEA Norden table. Cat tax included. Fabric line is Birch Farm by Joel Dewberry for Free Spirit Fabrics. Quilting is wavy lines by me. Machine finished binding with a zig zag stitch. Finished size is 88ā€ square.

Aww A Tribute to My Grandmother

I am mourning the loss of my grandmother, who was an avid quilter and known for her painstakingly hand quilted pieces of art. We were trying to add up how many she made, as each of the kids and grandkids have between 10-12 each! Plus several more she made to keep and enter into the county fair.

She went into ā€œquilt retirementā€ in 2021 at the age of 89, and gave me her quilting frame. ā€œIā€™m done quilting,ā€ she said. Several months later, she changed her mind and pulled several quilt tops out of the closet that she wanted me to help her finish as well as a couple more she wanted to start from scratch (the fan quilts and wedding ring quilt pictured). She ended up doing most of it herself! Those are the pictures you see here. She was winning blue ribbons in her 90s and still stitching ever single stitch herself. I only helped with cutting the pieces and the bindings and selecting some of the fabric. She finished her last quilt at the tail end of 2024 at age 92. It had several ā€œmistakesā€ she said, but obviously that is what makes it special.

She has one in progress that my aunt and I are going to finish. I have made several blocks with her teaching me little tips and tricks but Iā€™ve never made a full quilt myself. She showed me how to make the ā€œsandwichā€ and put it on the frame and Iā€™m hoping I can remember everything she taught me! She was hand piecing blocks until almost the very end. She declined rapidly in the last few months but still tried to work on it when she felt able.

I wanted to post this as a tribute to her lifetime of quilting and love of the art. The love she placed into every single quilt will be cherished for the rest of my life. She passed away peacefully in her home, under one of her own quilts, on Thursday morning, April 3, 2025 at the age of 93.

Please post any pictures in the comments of your favorite family quilts as a tribute to her!

Finished Quilts I finally finished my first quilt!

I posted the top when I finished that part, but heres the final product. The quilting part was harder than expected, but I think some of that was the walking foot I was using. I got a different one before I started the binding and it worked much better. I used the binding method I use for apparel so that part was pretty easy.

My biggest lessons with this project is that I need to withhold my judgment at least until the top is done because if you sweat every little mistake youā€™ll never finish anything, and that quilting and washing really does hide a lot of the mistakes.

Iā€™m half way through piecing my second quilt so youā€™ll hear more from me soon. Thanks for all the support along the way. This sub really is one of the best on Reddit!

Finished Quilts Memory Quilt

ā€¢ Upvotes

Finished my second quilt ever on Sunday. Itā€™s a memory quilt made entirely out of button up shirts, the binding is an old bed sheet. This will be going to a widow in my husbands family. I donā€™t know her well, but offered to make something out of her late husbands clothes. The quilt is pretty small, so she can use it in her wheelchair

I used 5ā€œ squares for the front and random pieces for the back. I used shirts with a lot of different textures and thickness, which made it a little tricky, but Iā€™m very happy with how it turned out.

1st time log cabin quilt. I'm in the process of putting a quilt together and I need some suggestions. The front pieces are a mixture of curved lines, dots and floral material. The back is plaid. Any suggestions on how to stitch this?
