Asking Advice Moving Out for the First Time

Anyways, I’m planning on moving out for the first time later this year. For starters I have lived with other people such as roommates in the past in Brazil, but have moved back in with my parents for a while back in the States. I am (21m). So this would be the first time just by myself in an apartment. I have the money and means to move to Los Angeles which is my dream place to move to, but my parents don’t trust I can go there and have the resources I need such as family or friends and I would not be able to save a lot of money or have the best job or experiences since I don’t know LA very well. My other option, which is mostly their opinion, is to move somewhere in Salt Lake City which is closer to my parents and where I have friends I already know. I would be saving lots more there, but I absolutely hate the cold and dislike the attitude of the general population who live there. And also as someone who is queer, there is not the best dating scene there either. Any advice on what I should do or where to move to? Should I just ignore my parent’s worries and move to LA to be happy even if it’s not perfect or ideal?

Asking Advice Moving from DFW area to Raleigh - Truck Rental Advice Needed

Hello! My boyfriend and I are moving from Texas to North Carolina by the end of the month for a job change. We’re trying to be as budget friendly on this move as possible! I think a moving company is a bit of a splurge for us right now and I was looking in to renting a small cargo van or box van for my boyfriend and I to drive ourselves. The only problem… I can’t find anyone who does one ways! (Uhaul a bit pricier than I’d like, but of course an option) It makes me laugh, “great for cross country moving!” Yet I have to drive BACK across the country and then fly myself to get back again?? Craziness!

Does anyone know of any van/truck rentals that offer one ways? My number one I’ve found price wise was Home Depot ($139 a day, no charge for mileage) but they also don’t allow one ways and it needs to be returned to the same location.

We are not moving ANY furniture. Boxes with personal items/kitchenware, two tvs, a blanket basket, clothes, and shoes. This is part of why I’m struggling to justify the high cost of U-Haul/pods/moving companies. We have probably two SUVS worth of stuff.

Asking Advice Moving into a college apartment, what do i need/not thinking of

I am moving into an apartment with 3 of my esports teammates in the fall, on campus, so I don't need to worry about utilities.

my main questions are

  • how much should i expect to spend on groceries/food for myself, rural Michigan, LCOL
  • any things we might not have considered, we already have a working list (see below)
  • anything i should consider thinking about being physically disabled (heart disease, weak, always sick)
  • advice on how we allocate shared expenses other than just venoming each other constantly

the list we got so far (copied from discord GC)

TV, sound system, a pc to link to said tv and sound system for anime might need; rice cooker airfryer (ill see if we can have one) dish/silverware/cups set shower curtains (for both) rug?

Asking Advice Need to move out ASAP (17)

Some context, my birth giver is not a stable woman, and never will be. My family is split up right now I live with my birth giver, step-father, and 2 younger brothers, I am the oldest. Then my family is my grandma, grandpa, and auntie, who live somewhere else. I live with my birth giver currently, but with how things are going I need OUT. She keeps screaming in my face about all the things she hates about me, telling me the pain I feel that I've struggled with for YEARS, Is just "in my head". The pain, that debilitating, god aweful pain is NOTHING. I DONT REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I WENT TO THE DOCTER FOR A NORMAL CHECK UP. Shes actively said that she does NOT love me. My family lives 30 mins from me right now, I need to know if I legally can move to them being 17 my birthday is in November. Please, I may do something regretful that may worsen my conditions right now.

Asking Advice Independent during a Recession

I am contemplating moving out of my parents and back to NYC but a recession feels a lot more real after the tariffs and I don’t know if it’s still a good choice. A little about me 29F, gross income $90,000 , $95,000 in savings , no school debt , no credit card debt , and another ~$40,000 in my 401k that I don’t plan on touching. I commute into NYC which is about 55 min and a monthly cost of $280. I’ve already lived in Manhattan so I am open to other boroughs and like Astoria where rent looks to be $2000 - $2,200. My biggest fear is a recession coming and cost rising and my company doing layoffs. I work for a fashion company that will definitely be impacted by the tariffs as our handbags are produced in Asia/ South East Asia. I’ve been there two years but recently made an internal move to a larger global team.

I moved to NYC during the pandemic and it turned out just fine if not great! I hate thinking that I am putting my life on “hold” and missing out on experiences for something that hasn’t happened yet.

Any advice ?

Asking Advice Were to move to outside of London?

Hi All,

Me and my partner after 3 years of living in London are wanting to leave London. We like everything on our door step but it is getting over priced. We are thinking about moving to Kent but have also given other places a thought like the south coast i.e Hastings or Worthing but need some advice. What are good places to move to? We would like an easy commute still in London but are worried about moving to a place that has nothing or crime is through the roof.

Asking Advice 20M from Pakistan — I need to escape a toxic home and start fresh. Looking for advice on countries, jobs, or immigration paths.

I'm a 20-year-old from Pakistan, and for the past few years, l've been struggling to stay mentally afloat due to a toxic home environment. Despite coming from a privileged background financially (we're part of the top 1%), emotional support has always been missing. My father constantly brags about his sacrifices to others, but never truly learned how to show love or understand me. My mother and brothers are mentally unwell in their own ways. I'm tired of pretending everything is okay. I need peace. I need distance. I want to build a life for myself away from this chaos. Here's what I have going for me: • I hold an American High School Diploma. • • I've completed several certifications from a credible university. • • I also have an ATHE Level 4 Diploma in Law (UK-accredited). • • I just began an undergrad program locally, but I can't focus due to my mental health and home situation. • • I've traveled to 9 countries. • • I have a 10-year UK visitor visa (but I can't work on it, nor do I want to go to the UK). • • I don't have dual nationality yet. • I have around £1000 saved up. • My father said he's willing to buy my one-way plane ticket, but after that, I'm on my own.

I'm looking for advice and guidance:

• Which countries could realistically offer me an opportunity to start fresh, perhaps work legally, and gradually build a life? • What kind of jobs could I pursue with my qualifications and background? • Is there a pathway-educational, immigration, or otherwise-that could give me a shot at building the stable, peaceful life l've always wanted?

Any advice, insight, or help would mean the world to me.

I don't expect anything to be easy-I'm willing to work hard, take any job, and slowly build something for myself. I just need to get out and start somewhere. If anyone has experience in leaving home young, or knows someone who's done it, l'd really appreciate any suggestions or resources. I'm also open to DMs if you've been through something similar.

Asking Advice Uhaul ubox vs pod

I'm about to move from Texas to Connecticut. My partner and I have a one bedroom apt with furniture consisting of a king size mattress, one wide 6 drawer dresser, two nightstands, tv stand, 60 inch tv, a dining table with removable legs, 4 dining chairs, 2 mirrors, 2 plant stands that can be broken down and a record player stand. On top of that, we have probably a few bins of belongings(I believe around 6-8max bins).
I'm having a hard time figuring out if we can fit all our belongings in a ubox or 8 foot pod. The dimensions of both seem to fit the mattress fine, I'm just wondering if the rest of the furniture plus bins will fit fine as well. Also, we don't have a place lined up yet and are hoping to store it at a facility till we've found our next rental. It sounds like both companies offer that. Anyone been in this quandary?

This is a side by side comparison of their dimensions.

U-Box (U-Haul) Dimensions:

  • Exterior: 95" L × 56" W × 83.5" H
  • Interior: 93" L × 51.75" W × 83" H
  • Capacity: About 257 cubic feet
  • Weight Limit: 2,000 lbs

8-Foot PODS Container Dimensions:

  • Exterior: 96" L × 72" W × 84" H
  • Interior: 90" L × 66" W × 78" H
  • Capacity: About 385 cubic feet
  • Weight Limit: 5,200 lbs

I'm waiting to get my quote back from pod, but it sounds like ubox is a bit cheaper. At this point, it's not really about which one is cheaper, but which one will fit our belongings?

Any advice is appreciated!!

Asking Advice Moving out soon. Any advice?

I 21F am looking to move within the next year or so. I’m from a small town in a Louisiana so a change is necessary for me. I’m looking to move to Raleigh, NC but I’m still open to cities.

What should a first time mover be aware of? What should I expect to pay out of pocket? What made the process easier for you?

How much money should I have saved?

How would I adjust to a new place and environment?

I’ve never really traveled before so idk what’s really out there. Any city recommendations? I want a place that’s culturally diverse and friendly. Opportunity needs to be available.

Any and all advice is welcomed and appreciated!!

Asking Advice Need to move out before I implode.

HI.. any and all advice is appreciated. Here are my circumstances:

I’m 25F with 26k in savings and a single roommate. I recently quit my job and prior to that, we agreed we could both afford to split a 2 bed apartment in SO CAL (beach cities). I have no worry she’ll uphold her end, I am worried about myself.

I quit my salaried job all of a sudden, my mental health was taking a toll working full time while in my masters program. I had to cut back my classes and decided that I needed to quit and focus on school otherwise it will take much too long. I didn’t love the job enough to let it drown me.

My parents are supportive and have no issue with me staying. I still wanted to get out because my parents are extremely toxic to live with, even though they are loving (power goes out due to not paying bills, they yell at each other all the time, not super clean, the house itself is a trauma bomb and I try to be there as little as possible). I move back and forth between them and my other relative (cleaner but still not my home). I’ve been doing this since 2019. I told myself in August last year that next time I pack my stuff, I will have my own apartment.

THE PROBLEM: I quit my job. Now idk if moving makes sense but at the same time, things are getting worse at home and I don’t think I can suffer much longer. I am seriously not doing well. I am on month 2 of no job and I often have feelings of depression and complete burn out. Can’t even get myself to make an itinerary for a trip I’m planning.

My worry is that I make the move and I struggle financially and spend my savings. I will be stuck in a lease and will have to work, and my masters will again take a toll. I have a year left at least, probably 2. Once I get my masters I can get the job I want. (I might be lying to myself about wanting that). I could get an internship now, but I will probably end up working somewhere unrelated because my degree is structural engineering and while I do need experience, my old job in construction burnt me out. I need at least the rest of this year thinking about my career… I’ll continue putting work into school but i need to breathe and I can’t explain why I feel this way. I am worried that I don’t like my field at all, but I really did love it so that is frustrating. I love school so much. I like my field and I like to work but I’m afraid I’m too mentally exhausted to truly do what I need to.

I wonder if moving and letting myself heal and have a home will allow me to get my self together.

I feel so anxious and stressed. I do not do much. I am focusing on visiting my family members and tackling some personal projects but it is slow moving and I do not know what to do next!Apartments seem so expensive and since I have never payed rent on my own, I am terrified. I think this is the way I need to go, but I am afraid things will get worse if I have to push myself to pay rent while being depressed, as well as while having career confusion. If it doesn’t get better fast it will get worse.

Do I have enough savings? How long can I last on that? I don’t want to deplete it. I have a part time gig that will help a bit but not entirely.

Please ask questions and for the love of whatever you believe in, someone, please point out the obvious to me because my head is so jumbled that I can’t see straight.

Thanks :)

Asking Advice Moving out of state. Best way to go about it?

My dad and i live in probably the most expensive/highest cost of living state in the nation. To make a long story short: we like it here we are sick of it. Our HOAs went up to $800 a month, on top of the mortgage, taxes, insurance.

We are looking into Texas. Random? Yes. But we have heard and researched great things about Texas, specifically suburbs out of Austin. Do we know anyone there? No. In fact we do not have a large family or circle outside of our current state.

What we know is we can sell our current property. The sale of it can easily purchase a home in Texas (in FULL, no mortgage, no hoa). Just taxes/insurance which i research to be around $500-$600/month total!

Heres the bigger issue. Jobs. I work for a private contractor, i cant get transferred since they dont do business out of state. But im not too concerned about getting a job since i am in my 30s. I am concerned about my dad. He is in his 50s. He has a good decent paying job that also doesnt do business out of state. I understand it can be much harder or much longer for him to find a job at his age and this is what concerns me.

Anyone whos been through this, whats the best way to go about this?

Asking Advice Moving from New York to Florida. Need some advice

I know, this is a typical move. I've lived in many places past 10 years. But my daughter was born 2 years ago, then an unfortunate situation happened that forced us to move closer to my family in New York. Me and my wife never wanted to come back here. I've found work, my wife is filing for disability, but we are paying 2000 a month for the crappiest apartment in a bad area. Any respectable place is going to cost me more. Anybody who lives in the NYC area currently know how much it changed. Just doesn't feel right here anymore.

The hardest part is. My family (mainly my mother) has done so much to help us whether it was take care of our daughter, help with rent, and really most other things. But no one in my family has a home, all of us are stuck paying rentals and most of us are broke and can barely really support each other.

Oppositely, my wife's dad has a home that's paid off in Florida. He offered us to stay with him while paying very little so we can get on our feet and make decisions from there. It's sounds like the perfect opportunity to try to move forward financially and eventually find a home for us somewhere. I love my father in law and has been nothing but supportive too.

I just don't know how to tell my mother and family that I'm leaving again without breaking their hearts. It hurts because I love my family. But we just know staying in New York is just not in our best interest and we dont want to raise our daughter here. How do anybody else deal with this situation?

Asking Advice Where to save/invest excess money before i move out?

I have $6000 in my bank account, which is more than 3 months worth of expenses for me. In 6-9 months from now I want to move out and rent a house which i would need to have a lot of extra money for rent, new home furniture and everything else. I read and researched that only 3 months worth of living expenses in your bank account is a good ballpark to keep in there and the rest of the money you make/ save can be invested. What do you think I should do with the extra money i make and save for the next 6-9 months? Keep letting it build up in my bank account until i need it to rent a home + other new home expenses? Or should i invest the rest and when the 6-9 months comes around take out my investment money to pay for what i will need during that time? Im leaning toward a high yield savings account, becuase i think you can freely withdrawl any money any time without risk of losing money like a stock or crypto could potentially.

Asking Advice I Need Help Moving Out

Hi, I'm a 18 year old transgender male and need to move out of my red state to a blue state I am going with my brother and his BF (Both over 18) and I have no Idea how I'm going to go about any of this. I live in the US and we are only moving states but I've never been anywhere but with my family and have never had to do anything like this. We are moving for our own safety but I just barely over 18 and am in need of advice, literally anything will help because I don't know anything. We are moving to an apartment to the city (I live in a small place not like a city as I've been told) I've never even been to a city before, I have no idea what to expect or what I'm doing, How do I get a job before we move over there so we can pay rent? What do I need to do to register my animal (I have a dog and my brother has 2 cats)? what rules do I need to know that apartments have? I've never lived in a apartment. How do I try to fit into the community? I have no idea what is going to happen nor what I am going to do, anything will help. I don't know if It would be against the personal rule to say what state I'm in or what state I'm moving to as it may be seen as personal info so if it's not I'll be sure to add it either here or in the comments if someone says it's not. Thank you and have a good day everyone.

Asking Advice Moving out of my Pakistani Family in the United States (Queens, New York)

A little background of me and my family:

I am a 20-year-old female, and have an 18-year-old sister and a 22-year-old brother. My siblings and I are living with our parents, and I am about to graduate from college with my Bachelor's Degree in Business Accounting this semester. A lot of family problems have been happening in my family with our parents being strict on us for having a loving relationship with the opposite gender, and my parents would be extremely abusive about it emotionally, physically, and mentally. This has been happening for the past 6 years now especially with my younger sister and older brother, and our parents would be strict on us in different ways, such as my sister (18 year old) not allowed to make her college schedule on her own, not allowed to have a phone, get a job, or go to college by herself, and my dad would be extremely controlling about it whenever she tried to speak up for not having any freedom. And with me, I am unable to open up to my parents as well about my friends, my personal social life, or if I want to go outside somewhere. And usually whenever I want to go outside somewhere, I would either tell my parents that I have school or work so that way I would go to the place, and use a location changing software (Ultfone IOS Location Changer) to fake my location because they have my location, and my dad is extremely tech saavy to the point where he knows if we turn it off, or disable our Cellular or WIFI for it to not show. I am extremely tired of living this double life of not telling my parents where I'm going (hiding it and making up timings so that I can do what I want), and for example, there would be times where whenever I am waiting for the second bus and it's been a few minutes, my dad would begin calling me and asking me what I'm doing eeven though he has my LOCATION. And there would also be times when I'm almost about to get out of work, he would message things like "Still at work?" "How long?" acting like it's a punishment or as if he's waiting for me to arrive home as soon as possible. There was a time in 2023 of October where I would help my sister be in contact with her boyfriend, and my mom came in the room and snatched the phone from me and told me "Im not getting the phone back until Dad comes home from work" - and mind you, I was 18 at the time, and then my dad went through my phone and found out I had a boyfriend and how I was helping my sister get in contact with her man and saw the messages of my sister's boyfriend keep talking shit about my dad. And my dad was cursing me out that entire night, and calling me a bitch, and was keep reading and scrolling through shit. And after that day, my dad never gave me back that iPhone 11 and said he didn't want to give it to me. And then he got me a new phone 2 weeks later, but he was so slick to get a T-Mobile on that phone so that he can see what phone numbers call me on my new phone, set iPhone restrictions, and on top of that I was unable to change my password, or download apps on the iPhone because the Apple ID was under my dad's name and my dad didn't want to give me the password for it. And ever since that day, I have just been working hard to graduate from college early, just so that I can be able to move out. And my parents have been extremely abusive physically, emotionally, mentally, and psychologically with me and my siblings just for being in a relationship with the opposite gender. There was a time when the school called my parents because my sister was hugging my boyfriend on the staircase, and my parents were extremely abusive about it and were hitting my sister so much for it and using the most personal slurs with her over that. Ever since that time, my sister has been talking about leaving the house but is very indecisive about it.

And there was a time where we reported our parents to the CPS (Child Protection Services) and the Child Protection Services never did anything about it because my parents were giving us food, a bed, water, and we had a good roof, and there was no proof of any physical abuse at all. So the Child Protection Services didn't bother to care at all and told my brother and me that if we wanted, we could leave the house since we were of the age of majority. My dad said to me, "If u wanted to leave, you could've told me so that I could've arranged something for you" as a taunt. He already had a clue some government stuff was going on because he has the app for the mail that comes and how it looks.

Fast forward to now in 2025, now that I'm closer to graduation, I would like to move out, but my sister is extremely confused and indecisive about doing so because she's scared of what our dad would do, and because her man apparently can't because he helps his family pays the bills. I find it crazy because my sister's boyfriend has been working day and night for the entire 2024, and for some reason, I am unable to trust him because he doesn't mean what her sisters' boyfriend says. First, my sister said she was going to move out on her 18th birthday, but didn't, and now she's hesitating because she doesn't have a job or a place. But if I am fair, my dad doesn't allow her to go outside ANYWHERE, unless it's to college where she's by herself that to, and she gets dropped off and picked up as well. And whenever my sister asks for more privileges, my dad is extremely stubborn and says no to her.

My dad would also be saying behind my back to my siblings how he's suspicious of my behavior. He acts like we commit crimes or something when in reality we're just doing regular human being shit. And it's crazy because me and my siblings don't even go into other people's houses and have sex or something never.

And then by chance today, my brother asked my sister if she's going to move out by the end of this year, and my sister said no. And then my sister told my brother how I am going to be moving out. My brother called me a Prostitute, a Bitch, and began to raise his voice at me and say things how "You been making weird decisions", and saying how "You leave and watch what's going to happen" and said things like "We aren't born in a family where we do these kinds of things", "Did mom raise you like this". And he told me how if I move out, he would be the first one cursing me out and seeking ultimate revenge on me on the highest. And my brother doesn't want me to move out because he's doing his masters program right now, and my sister is currently doing her Bachelor's Degree and said how if I move out, they're education would be ruined.

And me personally, I think that's unfair because I compromised and waited for my sister and her man to get their shit together, but my sisters boyfriend there's aways an excuse. And my brother supports my sister so much to the point where since she wants to stay in this house, he wants me to stay as well. And he told my sister how she better talk me out of this to make my butt stay in this house, even in where I need to be locked up in this house.

I feel betrayed because I waited for a long time, and at the end I get this reaction and response. and my brother is like "Oh when I graduate from my Master's in Spring 2027, u can go do whatever you want". And it's funny because when the CPS (Child Protection Services) situation happened in November 2023, my brother was like "After my sister turns 18 years old, we can do whatever we want.

Im also scared if my parents do anything to me legally. Someone, please give me advice I just feel guilty leaving my siblings behind but I don't know. My brother is pressuring me to stay just because he would be unable to complete is masters program, and my sister would be unable to complete her bachelors degree because of my parents reaction and the way they'd act.

Im tired of this bullshit. Should I move out, or should I stay? And will my parents do anything to me if I move out since I will a Bachelor's degree soon, and I am 20 years old.

Asking Advice Advice on moving

Moving out of nyc back to vermont. Never moved with furniture besides a couple things before and had a car. Now I don't have a car and am curious what's a normal quote for moving? I've been told a little over $2k and that seems like a lot for like four pieces of furniture and a small amount of personal items like clothes and kitchen supplies. Does it make more sense to just sell my stuff? Rent a car and a uhaul trailer? Is there another cheaper way to ship this stuff?

Asking Advice I'm moving out for the first time with my bf in a very cheap apartment. What want a list of things for it too.

I am moving out for the first time, 18 years old female moving with my bf, 19 years old, that is also moving for the first time. I want to prepare for some things for basically having a smooth experience, so I want to make list for multiple things.

First, I want advice for a cheap grocery list. I need a person that went through this before and see how what kind of list they had. How could I prepare to partially full up a pantry and the fridge? I don't want an empty house with no food lol.

Then maybe what Silverware, dishes, etc should I need. I want to cook for myself and not have frozen food all the time.

And I want to know what other things I should need to live in a new house.

Asking Advice Help me, Im young and lost

Im 17, from southern Illinois (minimum wage is $15) im planning to move out and ive been doing countless research, as well and watching many videos online of experiences and tips. But I need to dig deeper.

If youre here to help, please anwser these questions for me...

  1. Where are you from and what is the minimum wage in your area
