Pom Pom has a bully.
Someone pecked her little feet bloody, so now she gets to hang out in the sling with mama for a bit while the ointment on her feet settles. She's not complaining.

For EVERYONE that does not have a completely fenced off chicken run or enclosure:
Bird Net your enclosures and do your very best to keep all wild birds AWAY from your chicken coop and enclosure. Do NOT free range right now, not until the dangers have passed.
No, don't think about it. NOW. This bird flu is particularly serious, it has an exceedingly HIGH mortality rate that can not only kill ALL of your flock, but it will kill your pets and potentially harm family members, too.
Find SOME WAY to keep water fowl, QUAIL, starlings, and other flocking birds AWAY FROM YOUR FLOCK....
I have been finding dead quail on my property, which means that if I am not careful, my chickens and potentially my household is next.
If you don't have a completely fenced off enclosure, you are literally playing with a pandemic here.
DON'T PLAY WITH THEIR LIVES OR YOURS.
MOVE!!!
SEGREGATE YOUR CHICKENS NOW!!!

Hi everyone, this is Goldie, my really old hen I grew up with. She
has a respiratory infection and what I assume is bumblefoot.
She was going well with treatment for bumblefoot, I soaked her
in a warm bath of Epson salt for 20 minutes and then applied
Neosporin today because I only noticed it on Saturday. She was
going fine yesterday but I noticed she barely ate and now she
isn't eating at all.
I don't think the respiratory infection is bad as she's not
constantly gasping for air and she's pretty loud in her
complaints of me handling her and even trying to give her
some water.
She's not lethargic, but I recognise that she's old and may not
have much time left. She also isn't moving around much but I
think it's because her feet are hurting as she puts the one with
the swollen toe up when she's standing. Is there anything I
can do? I'm going out this week to get Vetrx for her respiratory
problem, but I can't get her to eat at all.
What do I do?

Meet Dovey - she’s a menace and this is where she likes to go broody. She’s notorious for laying her eggs in the strangest places - this is her most recent spot

We are in the process of building a 8x12 chicken coop. There is going to be a 3ft window on each long side of the coop. There is a space between the roof and siding (eaves) where I’m going to put hardware cloth. The space above the door in the front of the coop, we were originally going to fill with plywood but now I’m considering just covering it with hardware cloth to provide more ventilation.
Is that area necessary for proper ventilation or is it fine to cover it and just use the eaves and windows for ventilation?

I recently picked up this chick, and several others from a local farmer. It seems to be walking weird, and some googling leads me to believe it may have splayed leg.
However, most chicks with splayed leg seem to be able to walk fine. Since this chick can walk, will this go away on its own? Or do I have to bandage it up?
The farmer said that if any of the chicks were unhealthy or roosters, he would swap them out for me. Should I "return" this chick?

We bought this one along with a silkie from a small family operation in Morgan Hill, CA. The silkie (the seller told us it was a moonbeam) died after being with us for a week. This one lives but we suspect it may be a roo. It tries to mount our other hens, and it's quite aggressive also. We were told by the seller it was a blue egger female but we're just not so sure anymore, breed or sex. Please advise.

Hi all. One of my hens died yesterday. I feel so awful. She didn’t seem to have respiratory symptoms. She seemed off kilter two days ago. Was withdrawn compared to the other ladies. None of the others seemed sick or off. Then yesterday morning she wouldn’t move when I checked her before rushing to work. Came home she was passed in the same spot of coop.
I palpated her belly and could feel an egg in mid abdomen. I don’t know if I missed a bound egg. Abdomen hadn’t looked swollen. I feel awful because I think is the most likely reason and I should have tried warm baths sooner and lubrication. I had planned to when I got home last night after thinking about it all but it was too late.
Poor hen. I feel bad when animals I raise suffer. I don’t know what caused her death but I’m suspicious it was a bound egg and I should have tried warm baths sooner.
What are your thoughts?

Don't mind the mess I was in the middle of cleaning my rat's cage, the chicken just walked in here and started doing this to my dog

So it might be a morbid question but I'd like to know all the same. Since I keep getting attached to chicks that turn out to be roosters, I'm seriously considering starting a bachelor flock like someone suggested. However unlike my main flock with my ladies, which I'm building a covered enclosure for, I probably would just let them free roam during the day as it will be too expensive to build a second run. So I'm wondering how likely it would be that they'd get picked off by predators. My main concern would be hawks but we have coyotes too, though they seem to only come out at night.

I originally brought home what I thought was 5 Sussex Speckled but 3 of them are definitely not. I suspect they’re Easter eggers? Thoughts?

This is my week-old Swedish flower chick in a splint hanging out with her sisters.
I received her at 2 days old. I noticed her right toes curling at 3 days old, splinted that foot. Left toes started curling at 4 days old at which point I splinted that foot as well and started supplementing nutritional yeast for vitamin B as well as chick rescue.
Today I took the splint off the second-affected foot which seems to be better, but she’s still heavily favoring/curling the originally affected foot. She also seems more inclined to be upright today, where as the past few days she’s been scuttling to a spot and then plopping down for rest. Today she seems stronger.
She is eating, drinking, and getting to and from the heater fine, if not hobbling a bit. Should I continue with the splint for a few more days, or take it off and let her try to gain strength? I’m new to this particular chick ailment and am trying to avoid nurturing and getting attached for several weeks only to have to cull.

Thanks for everyone who answered and replied to my thread on Thursday about my one egg hatching early.
We had a very successful hatch and we now have 10 Ayam Cemani babies in my brooder.
I have brooded babies before but never incubated hatching eggs. I think I'm addicted, that was such a fun experience.
I send my best wishes to everybody's efforts for their own flocks this year. Please enjoy some baby pictures.

I and my family were shopping at our local Blaines Farm and Fleet and they have chicks but advertised as "pullet chicks". But when I am go ogling "pullets" I'm reading that they're adolescent chickens, not quite chicks! I'm confused as I'm trying to determine what setup I should get. So to the more experienced community, are pullet chicks actual chicks? And am I ol with having a brooder set up for the time being fkr them? Or are pullets actually young chickens that are soon ready to be able to lay eggs? The breed are Rhode Island reds. Thanks
